y now, most members of the community are aware of the Sterigenics issue in the Village of Willowbrook. For additional information please visit the Village of Willowbrook web site at willowbrookil.org. You may also contact Brad Frost of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency at 217-782-7027 with any question you may have. Since this issue was brought to the attention of Willowbrook on Aug. 22, they have been working diligently with federal, state and local officials to get answers to so many questions. They continue to be in contact with representatives from the following agencies: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Illinois EPA (IEPA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). We have also been working closely with Willowbrook and other agencies. We are seeking to have Sterigenics shut down until the US EPA and Illinois EPA can finish their environmental impact study showing the impact of their operations. During the month of September, the city received its Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year that ended April 30. Each year, as required by the state, the city undergoes an audit of its financial statements and records by an independent audit firm. The purpose of the audit is to obtain an opinion that the city’s financial statements are prepared in conformity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The city treasurer and staff are responsible for the coordination and preparation of the city’s CAFR through its audit firm, as well as preparing all documentation and records necessary to support the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The CAFR can be found on the city’s web site. The receipt of this report means that the start of the city’s budget process is soon approaching. The preparation begins in December and the city council budget meetings will begin in February of 2019. Darien’s Tree Lighting celebration and visit from Santa
Sun., Nov. 4, 1–3pm is “Open
House” at Old Lace Schoolhouse & Museum with eye-catching exhibits. 7422 Cass Ave., Darien. Then, on Sun., Dec. 2, the Darien Historical Society welcomes in the 2018 holiday season with its annual Tree Lighting celebration. Activities start at 4pm and include hot chocolate, cookies and a visit from Santa. The Eisenhower Junior High School chorus will be there spreading holiday cheer with carols. The Tree Lighting festivities take place on the corner of 75th and Cass Avenue, by the Old Lace School home to the Historical Society. Holly Days offers a full season of events, Westmont
The Holly Days festival in Westmont runs from the Saturday after Thanksgiving to Dec. 31 with a variety of events including: The Rotary Club’s Ugly Sweater 5K Run/ Walk, Frosty and Friends Parade and a lighted Tree Walk. A light parade in Lisle
The annual Lisle Santa Light Parade, featuring the official arrival of Santa, starts at 4:30pm on Sat., Dec. 1. The parade starts from Ogden Ave. and Main St. and works its way south through downtown Lisle, turning east on Burlington Ave. and ending at the Lisle Village Hall. Santa’s final destination is the Museums at Lisle Station Park where there will be a photo opportunity as Santa will take requests from good little boys and girls.

Trees come alive with lights at The Morton Arboretum’s Illumination, Lisle
The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, promises another spectacular walking tour and light show at their annual “Illumination” presentation of lights starting Nov. 16 and running through Jan. 1. You’ll be surrounded by color as you walk a one-mile paved path amid interactive lighting effects that highlight the beauty of trees in winter. Holiday art and craft market Mayslake Peabody Estate, Oakbrook Terrace
The Holiday Art and Craft Market takes place Sat., Dec. 8, 11am–6pm and Sun., Dec. 9, 10am–4pm at Mayslake Peabody Estate. Shop for quality artisan holiday gifts for family and friends. In 1919 Francis Stuyvesant Peabody commissioned renowned Chicago architect Benjamin Marshall to design the Tudor Revival-style mansion known today as Mayslake Hall. The style reaches back to England’s Tudor period as a revival of the timber-frame buildings popular at that time. Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is working to restore Mayslake Hall, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It’s that time of year again when our committee begins its search for a very special man or woman who has given of themselves to make Darien a “Nice Place to Live!” The Citizen of the Year Committee is accepting nominations for the 2019 Citizen of the Year. If you know of a person who goes “above and beyond the call of duty”…is always there when someone needs a hand…and who has contributed to make Darien a special place, please write a letter to our committee or fill out one of our official nomination forms that can be found any time during the year at City Hall or at the Indian Prairie Library. Holiday Lights decorating contest sponsored by city The City of Darien will again be sponsoring the Holiday Lights Decorating Contest. Each year, residents that put extra effort into decorating their homes for the season are nominated by their friends and neighbors for recognition and prizes. The first place home receives $200, second place $100, third place $50, and fourth and fifth place receive $25. Holiday Lights Tour
The popular Holiday Lights Tour will be on Wed., Dec. 19 this year, The tour will be on school buses,
and will run through the city, passing by each of the holiday lights winners. Participants will check-in at the police department lobby. This event is free and open to

City offers free Christmas tree pickup The City of Darien has partnered with Advanced Disposal to provide free Christmas tree pick-up again this year. On the weeks of Jan. 7 and Jan. 14, Advanced Disposal 12
will collect Christmas trees left in the parkway on your normal garbage day. For the trees to be picked up, they must be free of all ornamentation, including garland,
lights, and tinsel. If the tree is bagged, it will need a sticker to be picked up. If you have any questions regarding this program, call city hall at 630-852-5000.

It’ll be here before you know it…SNOW Keep your sidewalks clean
Residents are encouraged to clear their sidewalk after any measurable snowfall this winter. Leaving snow and ice on sidewalks presents a safety hazard to children and residents who walk to school, the bus stop or work. When sidewalks are not shoveled, pedestrians tend to walk on streets, which increases their risk of being struck by a vehicle.
When are the streets plowed?
The Public Works and Police Departments check streets and monitor a weather channel so snow removal crews can be dispatched out on the streets prior to snow or icy conditions occurring. Trucks stay out until all streets and cul-de-sacs are cleared.
When is salt used on the streets?
Salt is spread on streets when rain changes to sleet and ice or when snow accumulation is less than one inch. If there is more than one inch, snow is cleared and salt is put down. The City plows and salts all intersections, streets and cul-de-sacs.
What are the parking restrictions during a snowstorm?
A “snow emergency” is declared when snowfall exceeds one inch during a 24-hour period. No parking
is allowed on any city street when this occurs until the snowfall has ceased and plowing operations are completed. The city cautions residents not to park their cars in the street while shoveling their driveways, since this impedes snowplows trying to clear your streets. Please shovel driveways from side to side in order to avoid placing snow in the streets and ensure that garbage cans are not put in the street during a snowstorm.
Will the city be able to plow my street if there is a medical emergency?
Anyone who has a medical emergency should phone 911. The dispatcher will contact Public Works to ensure that your street is cleared to enable a quick response for any emergency.
Why doesn’t the city plow certain streets?
Plainfield Rd., Cass Ave., Lemont Rd. and 75th St. are county roads and are plowed by the DuPage County Highway Department. Frontage roads are under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Other roads that are considered “private,” establish plowing service contracts via their management company.
Are any sidewalks plowed?
In order for residents, children and patrons to utilize city sidewalks to schools, shopping and exercise parks, the City of Darien maintains a policy of plowing primary route sidewalks throughout the city. The city utilizes two pieces of equipment to plow approximate 21 miles of sidewalks. The sidewalk operations commence after one inch of snow has fallen, and continue until all the snow is removed from these routes: • Clarendon Hills Rd. from 67th to 75th St. (both sides) • 67th St.—East of Cass to Wilmette (both sides) • Cass Ave.—67th to Frontage (both sides) • Plainfield Rd.—Rt. 83 to Manning Rd. (both sides) • 75th St.—Rt. 83 to Lemont Rd. (both sides) • Manning Rd.—Plainfield to 75th St. (both sides) • Fairview—Manning to 75th St. (both sides) • Bailey Rd.—Plainfield to Frontage (both sides) • Frontage Rd.—Bailey to Oldfield Rd. Recycle your holiday lights Don’t know what to do with the old strands of Christmas lights that are tangled and broken? Don’t throw them in the garbage—recycle them! The City of Darien has again partnered with Elgin Recycling to offer our residents free recycling of holiday lights! Last year Darien residents recycled 1900 pounds of holiday lights. All light colors and strand lengths
will be accepted. Items include mini-lights (Italian lights), C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights, and extension cords. (Please—no CFLs). From Nov. 12 through Feb. 11, 2019 you may bring your lights to the Darien Police Department at 1710 Plainfield Rd. The bin is located outside, so there are no restricted hours. Please leave lights only, and take your boxes

City of Darien Use caution during deer breeding season The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County urges drivers to slow down and stay alert to avoid deer-vehicle collisions this fall, when the animals’ breeding season increases the risk of accidents. “Deer are crossing roads and highways more frequently in search of mates between October and December, so deer and auto collisions increase dramatically. According to State Farm Insurance, Illinois ranks 32nd in the nation for deer-vehicle accidents. A driver in the state has a 1-in-192 chance of having a collision, but there are ways to help lower the risk. • Reduce your speed and watch for deer on the edge of the road, especially at dawn and dusk. They’re common along woods, fields, fencerows and waterways, but you can encounter them almost anywhere. • If you see a deer cross safely in front of your car, slow down and expect more to follow.
• Make a note of where you’ve seen deer before. • Be careful when going around curves or when approaching favored deer crossings. • Don’t assume that a deer in the road will run off as you approach. • Don’t use your horn unless it looks like you are going to collide with a deer. Distant noise may confuse the deer. Close noise may produce an extra burst of speed from the animal, but there is no way to predict how a deer will respond. • Heed deer-warning signs. They are placed in areas where deer-auto
collisions are likely to occur. • Do not swerve to avoid deer. Slow to a stop and wait. Flash your headlights to encourage the animals to move. If an accident does occur, drivers and passengers should not attempt to remove dead or injured deer from busy roads. Instead, they should contact local law enforcement for help. Illinois law requires drivers to report to police any deer-related accident that has more than $1,500 in damage.
City of Darien 2018/2019 Parkway Tree Trimming Program
Prevent water lines from freezing
The City of Darien will be conducting their annual Parkway Tree Trimming Program beginning in December. This year’s tree trimming program consists of trimming approximately 1,750 parkway trees, approximately 65 tree removals and stump grinding. Below are the subdivisions to be trimmed: Hinsbrook Plainfield Highlands This year’s program also includes contract pricing for the Private Property Tree Trimming Program to all residents. The price for the private property program is $250.00 per tree in the front yard, and $375.00 per tree in the back yard. Residents may contact Ryan P. All residents should take precautions to keep water supply lines in your homes from freezing during extreme cold. You should let the water trickle in plumbing lines or fixtures that face north or west exterior walls. This helps to prevent water from freezing within the wall. Additionally, the City would like to remind residents that if you are going to be leaving town for an extended amount of time during the winter season, that you should set the hot water tank to pilot and maintain the heating system at a 60 degree range. We also encourage shutting off your water at the meter and relieving the pressure from the pipes by turning on a couple of faucets at the lowest point.

Protect storm drains—only rain in storm drains Have you ever wondered where exactly the stuff that runs into a storm drain goes? The mysterious pipes hidden beneath those metal grates on your street corner usually connect to a nearby river or creek. In some places, storm drains send water underground, and these aquifers are even harder to clean up than streams. That’s why storm drains are only for the rain and snowmelt! You can help ensure that our rivers and drinking water sources are clean by keeping pollution out of neighborhood storm drains. Pledge to keep your storm drain clear of leaves and debris and never dump anything into a storm drain!
1. Keep storm drains clear
City and county crews work to keep storm drains clear, but with thousands of drains across the state, they need your help. You can reduce street flooding by keeping storm drain grates clear of leaves and debris. Here’s how: Take a look at the storm drain grates in front of your home or business before and right after a rain
or snow storm. Check to make sure they are free of leaves and debris. Use a rake or pitch fork to clear leaves and debris from the storm drain. Please use caution! Do not put your feet or hands into the storm drain because dangerous debris could collect there. Do not try to remove the grate, only the debris on top of the grate. Dispose of leaves in your yard waste container or compost bin. When leaves fall into the street, rake them one foot away from the curb so they won’t block the path of rain water. If you can’t clean a clogged storm drain yourself, notify your city or county public works department that help is needed.
2. Never dump in a storm drain
Dumping into a storm drain isn’t just wrong, it’s against the law. Automotive fluid, paint, household materials, pesticides: none of these things should be poured into a storm drain where they end up polluting our rivers and groundwater. Draining your pool or hot tub to the storm drain? Not ok. Better to send it into the sewer via a toilet, sink or tub drain. Washing cars on grass in your yard, or at a car wash will keep the phosphates from entering streams and rivers. Dumping out coffee or soda from your car? Instead of pouring it into the street, pour it onto a lawn or planted area where the soil can soak it up and break it down. Better yet, bring it inside and pour it down the sink. If you change your oil at home, do it over the grass where toxins can sink into the ground slowly, rather than running off the driveway and into the storm drains. If your car does leak oil onto your driveway, remove it from the surface before it rains. NEVER pour oil down the stormdrain! Disposing of hazardous chemicals? Get involved with your school district This school year is going very fast. We began the year very smoothly and it looks like the holiday season is just around the corner. Hopefully your school year has been going the same way. At this point, I would like to offer an opportunity for you to “get involved in the school district” with your participation in the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee. This is a group of individuals who are willing to give up one hour a month to learn about, bring questions about, listen to information on, and share information about Darien District #61. This is going to be another exciting year in our district and we want you to be part of the excitement. The meeting dates are listed below and will last for one hour. I know that no one time works for everyone and each year I struggle to set up a schedule to meet the multiple schedules that need to be juggled for your participation. At these meetings I have a topic or two to share with the group and open the meeting up for input and comments from the group. The first meeting will be held at Mark DeLay School on Tues., Nov. 13 at 5:45pm. The meeting will be held right before the Board of Education meeting that evening. It will be a chance for you to come and learn about the district and stay for the board meeting, if you wish. Congratulations to the board of education We were informed that our Board of Education was one of 24 Boards of Education in the state to receive the 2018 School Board Governance Recognition designation from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). The award acknowledges school boards “that have participated in various activities and behaviors that lead to excellence in local school governance in support
of public education.” The board was formally recognized at the IASB Fall Division Dinner on Oct. 2. These individuals serve on the board as a voluntary position and are elected by the residents of Darien District #61. This is the second time that the Darien District #61 has received this recognition for the work they all do on behalf of our students.

Darien District 61 Educational Foundation awards grants The Darien District 61 Educational Foundation is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. During this time, almost $75,000 has been awarded to teachers to enhance the quality of education for the students in Darien District 61. Annual grants are awarded at the beginning of the school year. Mini grants are awarded three times during the school year. Recently, the annual grants were presented. Sally Burke,
STEM teacher, at Lace School was awarded $3799 for the purchase of Lego WeDo 2.0 software and materials. These kits will allow students to work collaboratively to learn and apply new concepts in science and technology within the STEM classroom. They will be solving real world problems, such as preventing weather related hazards, constructing earthquake resistant buildings, and designing a rover vehicle to explore Mars. Julie Kowalski-Schmidt, Reading Specialist, at Eisenhower Junior High School was awarded $2500 for her grant “Building a Love for

And more good news: District #61 began the school year as it has in the past by recognizing the individuals who had achieved milestones within the district. The teacher and staff returned to the new year with excitement and energy participating in two days of training before the students arrived. In addition to the training the district honored five individuals for fifteen years of service to the students and community of Darien. Those individuals were presented with a crystal apple. Darien Chamber of Commerce Paint the Town Pink event promotes cancer awareness On Tues., Oct. 2, the Darien Women in Business in conjunction with the Darien Chamber of Commerce once again celebrated the 5th Annual, “Paint the Town Pink” at the Darien Clock Tower near Plainfield and Cass Ave. The event helps raise awareness and financial support to cancer research and is usually held the last Friday of September in preparation for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The Giving Tree and Food for Fines return to the Indian Prairie Library Give back through the Indian Prairie Library this winter. Financial News The economy—third quarter recap
Tariff and trade tensions were a constant challenge by Angelo Imbrogno The market faced many challenges during the third quarter but was resilient and provided positive performance. The tariff and trade tensions were a constant challenge and international pressure coming from the emerging markets were also present. The fiscal situation in Turkey was one of the primary risks that negatively influenced the emerging markets, pushing them in bear territory. The Federal Reserve Bank raised interest rates again and expressed intent for an additional interest rate hike in December of this year. Given all the above pressures and historically being the worst quarter for stock market performance, the bull market continued to extend its lead in the third quarter. The main driver behind the positive performance and overcoming the challenges was the strong state of
the US economy. GDP grew at a strong rate of 4.2%. The Institute for Supply Management’s Purchasing Manager’s Index continues to increase and actually reached a 14-year high mark in August. Job growth continued its steady improvement and wage growth also increased. Small business confidence reached a high level that we have not seen since the early 1970’s (according to the National Federation of Independent Business). Another vital factor was the strong performance that was reported by US corporations in their earning’s reports. Supported by the tax reform the earning reports were the strongest growth we have seen in many years and should continue to boost the presence of this bull market.
