REPORTERS’ NOTEBOOK Tamale championship draws top competitors

A free eCycling drop-off event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the First Baptist Church of Lewisville, 1251 Valley Ridge Blvd. Crews will remove acceptable electronic products from vehicles. Items that can be accepted include computer CPUs, monitors and peripherals, printers, fax machines, keyboards, photocopiers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, home and office phones, cell phones and consumer electronics. Items that cannot be accepted include microwaves, smoke alarms and detectors, thermometers, dehumidifiers, large appliances and non-decontaminated medical equipment.

The Sixth World Tamale Eating Championship in Lewisville has drawn commitments from three of the top competitive eaters in the world. The event, part of the Western Days Celebration in Old Town Lewisville on Sept. 2425, is sanctioned by Major League Eating, the governing body for stomach-centric competition. Sonya “the Black Widow” Thomas and Erik “the Red” Denmark have been added to a field that already includes two-time champion and world record-holder Tim “Eater X” Janus. Thomas is ranked No. 4 by MLE, Janus is ranked No. 5 and Denmark, who placed third in 2008, is No. 7. Last year, Juliet Lee of Germantown, Md., became the first female champion by downing 48 tamales in 12 minutes. The contest is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Sept. 25 at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Nominees sought for veterans commendation Congressman Michael C. Burgess is seeking nominations for the Congressional Veteran Commendation. Veterans from the 26th Congressional District chosen to receive the honor will be recognized at a “Salute Our Veterans” luncheon sponsored by the Highland Village Business Association on Nov. 9. City manager earns management designation Troy C. Powell, city manager of The Colony, recently received the credentialed manager designation from the International City/County Management Association. Powell is one of 1,200 local government management professionals credentialed through the program. To receive the credential, a member must have significant experience as a senior management executive in local government, have earned a degree, preferably in public administration or a related field, and demonstrated a commitment to high standards of integrity and to lifelong learning and professional development.
