teamed up for the event, which will have two sanctioned swims and a fun swim. The event will raise money for an art sculpture that will be placed in front of the town hall. Frisco Aquatics coach Chris Rowe said he hopes the swim eventually grows to become a part of Autumn Fest, but this year organizers are just focused on spreading the word. Read about the event on Page 6. Also spreading the word of a recent accomplishment is Frisco,

which was named a Preserve America Community. The honor recognizes communities across the nation for preserving and promoting their heritage. Frisco met most of the requirements through work done by the Frisco Heritage Association and the Frisco Heritage Museum. Read more about Preserve America and how the city earned the award on Page 3. PRESERVE AMERICA

Frisco is nationally recognized for honoring its past By DANIELLE ABRIL dabril@neighborsgo.com

Guests at the Heritage Museum learn about Frisco’s history, including the importance of cotton and the weaving loom.

“[This recognition] will make Frisco easier to find,” said Bruce Milhans, spokesman for Preserve America Communities. “It is being recognized as an excellent destination that is interested in

[its] history, and [it’s] using [its] resources rather elegantly to educate people.” In order to receive the distinction, the city had to meet three requirements. They included: sup-

downtown reuse plan in 2005 to protect historic buildings. For the final category, which was promoting historic assets, the Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau embarked on the North Texas Shawnee Trail Partnership. Frisco has partnered with eight cities, including Plano, Richardson and Waco, to make the public aware of the historical cattle trail that runs through the area. “Frisco is about learning from the past, honoring those that brought us here and making sure future generations are able to learn [its history],” Maso said. “It’s really important to who we are as a city.” Maso said the city is currently working on applying for a grant through the organization. Frisco recently received national recognition for preserving the city’s heritage, which has allowed it to apply for grant money that can range from $15,000 to $250,000. “[Our heritage] is an important part of who we are as a city,” Mayor Maher Maso said. “We know how we came to be and we’re working hard to protect and preserve [that].” Frisco was among 29 cities in the nation, including two in Texas, that was named a Preserve America Community this year. It received a certificate of recognition and a letter from the White House signed by first lady Michelle Obama, is listed on the organization’s Web directory and will receive a Preserve America road sign.

port a project with public and private partners within the last three years that promotes or preserves its heritage; recently adopt a resolution that showed its support for heritage preservation; and meet five criteria in three categories. Frisco’s Heritage Museum helped meet the requirements for first category, discovering heritage through historic places. The museum had documented more than 4,000 volunteer hours and 84 volunteers in its first year. “[Preserve America] is really a great opportunity for the city and the museum to share in the story of the region,” said Trey Colvin, museum coordinator. “It opens the door to a lot of great heritage tourism possibilities we can explore.” To protect historic resources, which was the second category, the City Council implemented a

SWIM WITH A PURPOSE

Little Elm to host first open water event Saturday By DANIELLE ABRIL dabril@neighborsgo.com

n idea between two Little Elm residents who lived across the lake from each other has turned into the Caw Coo Parrot Head Club’s first open water swim event, which will raise money for an art sculpture at the city’s town hall on Saturday. “This actually started as a bit of a dare,” said Trish Reyes, president of the Caw Coo Parrot Head Club about the swim she made to another board member’s house. “[But] we raised a fairly significant amount of money really quickly.” Last year, Swim with a Purpose was only open to the Caw Coo Parrot Head Club, a Jimmy Buffet fan club that also serves the community. Seven members swam to raise $1,700, which was donated to the sculpture fund. Ivan Langford, town manager, said the art piece was something the town had been hoping to add for years but couldn’t fund.

IF YOU GO The 3K swim will start at 7:30 a.m. and the 1K will follow at 9 a.m. Sanctioned swims will cost $50 for athletes who register in advance and $60 at the event. The Caw Coo Phun K will take place at 10 a.m. and will require a minimum donation of $50. The Sweater Puppies, a local band, will play live music at 11 a.m. and the awards will follow at noon. Little Elm Park is located at 704 W. Eldorado Parkway. For more information, visit littleelmtx.us.

Frisco Aquatics coach Chris Rowe sits on the diving board as he explains the instructions for practice on Sept. 3. Frisco Aquatics swimmers are preparing for the open water swim in Little Elm on Saturday.

When the club offered to help, the town im“We’ve been hoping someone would mediately agreed. come along and help us with that,” he said. “It’s a great project.” This year, the event at Little Elm Park is open to the public and will have a sanctioned 3K and 1K swim for racers, followed by the Caw Coo Phun K swim, which will be open to families of all swimming levels. Along with Keep Frisco Beautiful, Frisco Aquatics has partnered with the Caw Coo Club for the event, and teams have been training for the change in course. “There’s an eager anticipation,” said Frisco Aquatics coach Chris Rowe. “We are just doing a little practicing on how to make sure you’re on the right course since there are no lines.”

Reyes said the draw to the event is that swimmers experience a new type of environment they can’t get in an indoor pool. They have to deal with the wind, water turbulence and any other unforeseen natural factors. “There are conditions in play that affect your ability to swim, and it builds your strengths in different ways,” she said. Rowe said 25-30 swimmers from Frisco Aquatics will be competing in the sanctioned events. The participants are mostly high school students and middle age swimmers. Reyes said she expects about 50 swimmers this year, but 100-plus participants once word of mouth travels. “This is the kind of thing that will only build momentum,” she said. “If [swimmers] don’t participate this year, once they see it, they’ll do it next year.” Danielle Abril is the Frisco/Little Elm editor for neighborsgo.

the following tips: • Wash your hands often. • Routinely disinfect surfaces with soap and water, including toys. • Turn your head and cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue or the inside of your elbow. Coughing or sneezing onto your hands will spread germs to everything you touch. • Use a reusable water bottle. • Avoid close contact with people when you are ill. Everyone knows that Labor Day marks the end of summer. But a quick look around our portion of North Texas reveals a lessrecognized fact: The holiday weekend was but a harbinger of a fall season of lively festivals and events. The festival season generally runs mid-September to mid-October and includes Oktoberfest in McKinney and Addison (actually held in September), the Plano Balloon Festival, Taste of Collin County, Cottonwood Arts Festival in Richardson, Garland’s Wild West Cowboy RoundUp, Autumn at the Arboretum in the Lake Highlands area, the State Fair of Texas, of course, and others big enough to make our highlights list. “It typically cools off by September, so it kicks off the fall festival season,” said Jo Via, executive director of next weekend’s Plano Balloon Festival, shedding light on the flurry of festivals. “There’s always a good number of options for people to go to.” “It’s the weather,” said Denise Stokes, spokeswoman for the Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It’s so much more pleasant just to be outside. The weather cooperates really nicely with all the fun that you could have.” Following are details by dates and communities:

‘FLIPPED’ PG for language and some thematic material; 90 minutes

‘Flipped’ just flops $$$$$ $$$$$ $$$$$ $$$$$ $$$$$

MATT MUNGLE Contributor neighborsgo.com/blog/movies

ob Reiner wrote and directed the new comedy-drama-romance, Flipped, about two junior-high students who begin a complicated relationship. For her, it was love at first sight. For him, it was the pest that would never go away. Based on the Wendelin Van Draanen novel of the same name, this film simply misses the mark. Juli Baker (Madeline Carroll) is a young girl with tomboy ways and a family struggling to get by. When Bryce Loski (Callan McAuliffe) and his family move in across the street, she is immediately smitten, but he wants nothing to do with her. And so begins the journey of their adolescence and the pain of first love. Set in the 1950s, this film has an innocence that would never work in today’s fast-paced, ADD world. Not that it works here, either. The film may have worked better if it hadn’t been told in repeats. We see a section of the story from Bryce’s perspective and then it is retold completely from Juli’s point of view. This is clever and bearable the first few times, but after a while it gets tedious. I was also disappointed in the acting. The film stars two very strong TV actors (John Mahoney and Anthony Edwards) who normally hit it out of the park, but here they both seem uncomfortable and ill-prepared. Flipped is basically safe for the whole family even though it leans further toward drama than comedy. There are a couple outbursts of strong language that seem out of place for the film and the time period. It’s another reason that this one just doesn’t ever seem to cook, even in its own juices. Reiner is still a master filmmaker, but this just flopped.
