The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

Giving Bark Thursday: Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs. Throughout the day, anyone who makes a donation on their website (up to $30,000) will have their donation matched. Additionally, if you would like to create your own fundraiser, in hopes to raise funds on this special day, you can do so by clicking “Become a Giving Bark Fundraiser” at VetDogs.org/GivingBark.

America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk: You can also help America’s VetDogs make a di erence in the lives of veterans and first responders by participating in the 9th America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk, held on July 29 at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. This 5K is an In-Person and Virtual Event and dogs are welcome to join you on your run/walk too! At Penataquit Creek Meditation Garden

When Frank Salvaggio and daughter Giovanna learned of the supply struggles at the food pantry at St. Peter’s-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, they didn’t hesitate to jump in to help.

The owners of Frank & Maria’s Italian Market in Bay Shore started their own food collection drive to send to the church food pantry. They collect from customers, vendors, neighbors, and nearby businesses.

No stranger to community outreach, the company was, in fact, one of the first supporters of The St. Peter’s Organic Victory Garden (also referred to as The Farm at St. Peter’s). The garden, which opened in 2018, is on two acres-plus grounds at St. Peter’s By-The-Sea Episcopal Church.

“It’s important to support the community,” said Salvaggio.

Each Saturday, clients choose two bags from the five themed ones: readyto-eat; chef/baker; kid-

friendly; pasta, and rice. Each bag contains items associated with that theme; for example, the chef/baker bag is geared toward those who like to cook or bake. Kid-friendly bags include food items known to appeal to kids.

In addition, The Pantry at St. Peter’s clients are offered produce from the St. Peter’s Organic Victory Garden. This includes radishes, carrots, lettuce, and whatever is fully grown and ripe at the time.

The Pantry at St. Peter’s is a member of Long Island Cares–The Harry Chapin Food Bank. It also receives financial assistance from The Episcopal Ministries of Long Island.

Demand Outweighs Supply

The figures are grim. Over 35 million Americans – and it’s only expected to get worse – are food insecure, as people struggle to pay their bills, with inflation and food costs.

On Long Island alone, over 230,000 people were food insecure with

over 35% of them being children.

The most vulnerable populations are the unemployed and underemployed; veterans, seniors, the homeless, and other socio-ethnic groups.

“The face of food insecurity could be your next-door neighbor,” says Reverend Doyle Dietz Allen, priest-in-charge, of St. Peter’s By-The-Sea.

Food Pantries: An Important Safety Net While we can’t control inflation, businesses can help without ever leaving their offices. Encourage co-workers and staff to conduct their own food collections: at gyms, community events, and from friends, family, and neighbors.

Donations can be dropped off at the Pantry at St. Peters on Saturdays from 10:30 to 1:00.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a lifeaffirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm.

The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree

it’s about time they had a holiday to remember… and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.

The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.

Congratulations Graduates! Consider These Diploma Display Ideas

Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students’ academic careers. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on assignments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. High school diplomas represent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives.

Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work.

Framing

One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material and the matting can be chosen. Some grads

may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors.

Create a shadow box

Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photographs or papers. Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box.

Create a photo wall

Display the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every time the wall is viewed. Some families may want to display their diplomas together, especially if

multiple family members attended the same school.

Make a work of art

Various online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another.

Place it under glass

Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. When entertaining guests, the diploma can make for a unique conversation piece.

Medicaid Auto Enrollment Ended

Mutli-Agency Effort Underway to Re-certify Vulnerable Long Islanders

Automatic enrollment for Medicaid recipients has ended. Auto enroll was put in place during the pandemic to ensure continuous health coverage, but now Medicaid, Child Health Plus, and Essential Plan members must recertify or they will lose coverage. Members of special populations like Aged, Blind, Disabled

must also re-certify to keep coverage. Keep LI Covered, a grassroots effort led by the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council (NSHC), in partnership with Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling and the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, wants all eligible Long Islanders to be aware of their coverage deadlines and what agencies provide

New York State began mailing re-certification notices to enrollees and will continue to do so until June 30, 2024, as each enrollee’s re-certification deadline nears. Enrollees should call the Keep LI Covered phone number – 631-435-3000 – to re-

“We have about 900,000 eligible enrollees on Long Island. It’s a huge undertaking, but we don’t want anyone who is still eligible for coverage to lose their health insurance simply because they failed to re-certify. The re-certification rules were relaxed during COVID, but we are now

back to the annual recertification process,” said Stacy Villagran, Chief Operating Officer, Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council. She is overseeing the island-wide recertification effort that is funded by a grant from the Community Service Society of New York, and its multiple funders who care deeply about this issue. #keepLIcovered.

Defensive Driving Course

There is a $30.00 fee made payable by cash, check or money order (made out to Empire Safety Council) due at the time of registration. Please bring your New York State Driver’s License. Registration and payment must be made in person.

July 20th – Thursday at 6:00 P.M. Sue Avery has years of

horticultural experience and her business, Nature’s Edge, designs gardens that are ecologically sensitive. Sue will talk about gardening for pollinators and our native bees.

July 21st – Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.

Senior Assistance – This program is offered by the Suffolk County Office for the Aging. Get answers to questions you may have on Medicare entitlement programs and services for seniors, as well as explanations of Federal, State and local programs that are available. This is a one-onone meeting and is offered on a first come, first serve basis. The meeting is approximately 20 minutes per person.

King Kullen Helps Fund Summer Camp Programs For Disadvantaged Long Island Children

Kullen’s gift will help fund scholarships for children whose families lack the resources for summer camp. Additionally, customers who want to make a difference can participate in our annual ‘Send A Kid to Camp’ campaign this summer by scanning $5, $2, or $1 coupons at the register at all King Kullen and Wild by Nature stores.”

Family and Children’s Association President and CEO Jeffrey Reynolds stated, “The gifts we receive from individuals and corporations like King Kullen make it possible for us to provide these wonderful experiences for Long Island’s young people. We thank King

Kullen for all their support over the years.”

Family Service League Division Director Robyn Berger-Gaston added, “We are very grateful to again receive this generous donation from King Kullen. These camps are often the highlight of the year for the children we help.”

Supporting Small Businesses

Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at

a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local

businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.
