Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing. They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate? The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up. As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. Little Shelter’s 15th annual PET-A-PALOOZA will be held on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th, at 33 Warner Road in Huntington, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Featuring hundreds of adoptable animals looking for a home, plenty of activies for the kids, a HUGE Chinese Auction, Live Entertainment, Terrific BBQ, Rescue Groups and more. Forgotten Friends Summer Fair Garden Of Eve Organic Farm will be held on Saturday, August 18th, at 4558 Sound Avenue in Riverhead, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Rain Date: Sunday, August 19th). Featuring lots of fun activities for everyone, including vendors, artists and crafters, artisanal food producers, on-the-spot portraits, Henna art, Belly dancing, colored hair extensions, dogs and cats for adoption, handmade jewelry, raffles/auctions with awesome prizes and much more.
