I love what I do. I love waking up every morning knowing that our magazines support the local economy and also help spread the word about remarkable nonprofit organizations and local charities that work really hard to make a positive impact in the community as a whole, as well as a huge difference in so many individuals’ lives. You don’t have to be rich to make a difference. Millions of ordinary Americans, people who you pass on the street every day, also give to charities or volunteer, for the sake of making the world a better place. Here at Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles we love giving back to our community. That is why we are happy to showcase and feature any local charity in the Tampa Bay area completely FREE of charge. So if you want to give back to your community you can do so through us! Here’s how: If you or anyone you know would like to feature a local charity, and help them spread their message and reach thousands of homes, please get in touch with me directly by emailing me at matt@ nnlflorida.com. Let me know the name of the charity, their website and possible contact number so we can make sure to feature them in upcoming editions of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. And on the subject of giving back, remember that in my last editorial I mentioned the Rays Giveaway Contest? Well we had an incredible outcome, with hundreds of participants from Instagram and Facebook. Here are the name of our 5 lucky winners: Ona Lela Podell, Vilmaris Conigliaro, Cristina Dunway, Meghin Ruggiero and Cristina Paz. Congratulations again! We are mailing your Rays tickets as we speak. We hope you enjoy the press level tickets, and have a wonderful time with your loved ones. Speaking of our loved ones... June 18th, is Father’s day. I personally want to wish my Father, Tim Selby, a very happy father’s day. My Dad taught me how to play baseball and we really enjoy going to the Rays games. The last game we went to was on April 20th. We watched the Rays crush the Tigers! It was a great day at the ball-field with my family. My Mom, Grandma, my Fiancé Carla and her Father Julio also joined us. Sadly, the very next day, Carla’s father Julio passed away very unexpectedly, from a massive heart attack. It’s left a hole in all our hearts and honestly, we still can’t believe it. Julio was a a Tigers fan because his favorite player, Miguel Cabrera, one of the best players to ever play the game, is from his home country of Venezuela. We made some wonderful memories that day and I’m very happy

to know that Julio had the opportunity to see his favorite player. None of us knew at the time that Julio would be gone by the next day. This is just another example of how important it is to spend time with the people you love. So do me a favor and tell the people you love that you love them every chance you get. Spend as much time with them as you can and build as many beautiful memories as you can. A fun day at Tropicana field with your Dad is a good place for that. Because of Father’s Day and the spirit of giving back, we decided to spice up last month’s Rays contest and dedicate it to baseball loving dads! So you too, can share a fun day at the stadium with your father, like we did. To participate for your chance to win FREE press level seats for a Rays game, with a free parking pass included, please email me your best “Dad and I photos” to matt@nnlflorida.com ***Bonus points to photos with Rays Gear and at the Tropicana Field*** 3 lucky dads will be selected at the end of the month, and each will receive 6 press level tickets to a rays game and two parking passes.

Happy Father’s Day! Good Luck and Go Rays!

From Left To Right: Matt Selby, Charles Selby (R.I.P Grandpa, we love you and miss you dearly, we hope you and Julio are watching the baseball games from Heaven) and Tim Selby.

Warning: Curry Leaves is Highly Addictive By Carla Dubis

the food 10 stars if I could!

I have lived in South Tampa for 14 years, and I have never had better Indian food anywhere else. Like many of you probably have, I drove by this hidden gem a few times, until my fiance Matt and I decided to stop in before going to the movies at the AMC 14 inside of the Westshore Mall. Now, Curry Leaves has become a regular stop for us during the weekends and random week days when I cannot control my cravings. Curry Leaves is our special place for a date night before a movie, so if you’re looking for an amazing, exotic and mouth watering dinner before catching a flick, look no further. Curry Leaves will satisfy the pickiest of eaters, I know so, because I am one of them.

Every time I go there the food is incredibly fresh and delicious. Had it not been for the owner, Saji Mathew, I would have never had the opportunity to order some things on the menu that used to scared me a little, and now I order on a regular basis. I always gravitated towards the same dishes, but I followed suggestions and kept an open mind and I am so happy I did. Saji once suggested the signature calamari, which is now my favorite calamari in Tampa Bay, and I refuse to order it anywhere else. This dish consists of crispy calamari, stir fried to perfection, smothered in a tomatoe sauce, with onions, bell peppers, garlic and...curry leaves! YUMMY!!! Try it... you will not regret it. And if you’re anything like me and...Oprah, and you just LOVE BREAD!!! Then order the Cheese Naan, you owe it to yourself and your taste buds. Imagine the best cheesy quesadilla you ever had in your life, now imagine it with warm Naan... I call this the “Indian Quesadilla”

Hi my name is Carla, and I am highly addicted to Curry Leaves. Conveniently located on 4842 W. Kenny Blvd. right across Westshore Mall on Kennedy, this authentic and delicious Indian Restaurant, has become my biggest addiction! I often wake up craving their samosas, their juicy chicken tikka and the best cheesy naan I have ever had in my entire life.

I have never had a disappointing experience at Curry Leaves, which speaks highly on their consistency. And did you know? The chef of Curry leaves was a former chef in luxurious 5 star hotels and restaurants in India. That did not shock me at all, I would rate

It consists of fresh, warm naan stuffed with a variety of cheeses, that once you bite into, the melted cheesy goodness comes out and makes you fall in love. Yes, you can fall in love with food. It happened to me. As if all of that was not enough to go visit, check out their ad right next to this story! They are currently offering ONE FREE APPETIZER (I suggest the samosas!) until July 15th, 20017. What I also ABSOLUTELY LOVE about this place is that they offer FREE DELIVERY. Matthew and I have had a few awful experiences with food delivery services (cough, cough UberEats) but Curry Leaves actually offers you delivery... for FREE. Come on, try it out. You will also get addicted, I guarantee it.

Longoria Looking to Finish what Boggs Started

By Jake Berry

If you look out over the left center field fence at Tropicana Field you will see a familiar sight. Just over section 147 and beside Ducky’s Sports Bar in the 162 Landing is the iconic number 42 plastered on the wall. Jackie Robinson’s retired number is a fixture in all 30 major league ballparks and while the Rays have just a 20-year history, Robinson’s number isn’t the only one enshrined in the Trop. Just below it is the number 12 and it belongs to a man that helped put the expansion franchise on the map during its 1998 inaugural season. That number 12 belongs to Hall of Famer, Wade Boggs.

Boggs is an AL East icon. He dons the Boston Red Sox cap in his Cooperstown plaque and his lone World Series ring comes from his time with the New York Yankees. While the list of accomplishments in the Chicken Man’s career goes on and on, there is one more feat, one more accomplishment that adds to the 12 time all-star’s legacy. The Tampa native signed a two year deal with his hometown Tampa Bay Devil Rays before the franchise’s inaugural season. Entering his age 40 seasons, Boggs had nothing left to prove. He was almost guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame, he had his World Series ring, he had won five batting titles, and he played for two of the most historic franchises in the game. Still, Boggs took the opportunity in front of him, an opportunity many players dream of, and he took on the challenge of helping establish a new major league ball club in his own backyard. As a member of the then Devil Rays, Boggs eclipsed many milestones, including his 3000th hit. However, nothing was more important than the impact he had on the fan base and the community as major league baseball was finally brought to Tampa/St. Pete. Boggs laid the foundation for 18 years of ballplayers to come after him, and while the Chicken Man held down third base for 152 games during his Devil Rays career, there is a player manning the hot corner now that is looking to finish what Boggs started. Evan Longoria is the face of the Tampa Bay Rays franchise. When debating which players go on the Mount Rushmore of Tampa Bay baseball, Longoria is a unanimous choice amongst the fan base. The Rays made Longoria the third overall pick in the 2006 draft and he made his debut with the team just a year and a half later in April of 2008. After posting a .272 average with 27 home runs, the 22 year old won the American League Rookie of the Year award and also made his first of

8 JUNE 2017

three all-star teams. While the individual accolades were great, Longoria’s rookie year legacy really comes from him leading the squad to not only their winning season in franchise history, but also their first pennant and ultimately their only World Series appearance. Also a third baseman, Longoria plays a much different game at the plate than Boggs. While Boggs was known for his uncanny ability to slap the ball around the ballpark and find holes in the defense, Rays fans know Longoria for hitting the ball out of the ballpark. He is the only player in Rays history with more than 200 homers and will more than likely end his career over the 300 mark. That isn’t the only category Longoria leads. He is also the team’s all-time leader in doubles, runs batted in, at bats, games played, and there are several other records that he will likely break before his career is over. There are two iconic time periods in Rays history, the first couple of years when major league baseball was new to the area in the late 90’s and a decade later when the team went from worst to first and made their World Series run in 2008. Both of those periods were headed by two of the most iconic players in Rays history. Boggs was a Hall of Fame bound third baseman that was dangerous at the plate with a solid legacy in place. Longoria fits all of those characteristics, except his story remains unfinished. Wade Boggs helped to put the Tampa Bay Rays on the baseball map and Evan Longoria is looking to finish what he started by bringing a World Series title to Boggs’ hometown.

Don’t let Spot Get too Hot!

How to keep your four legged friend cool this summer.

By Billy Alice Florida is known for many things, not least of which is the HEAT! While most of the country assumes it’s always Summer here, us Floridians know the hot honest truth. Summer can get brutal and for our fur wearing friends it can be even more unbearable. So if you have a canine companion here are a few tips to keep them cool and how to spot if they’ve gotten too hot! First things first, always make sure to have a lot of fresh water available for your dog (year round) but especially in the summer months. This will keep them hydrated and help cool them from the inside out. One of the best ways to avoid overheating, is to plan outdoor activity in the early mornings and later evenings when the temperature is lower. When going on walks keep your pup on grass or light concrete as much as possible. On a 95° day the concrete can reach a temperature of 120° at peak sun hours and the grass can still reach 105°. If the ground is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pup! In the hot months try going on shorter walks more frequently instead of long walks that can lead to exhaustion or overheating. It’s also never a good idea to let your pup sit in a parked car even if the windows are cracked or open. Cars can quickly exceed the ambient temperature of the air even in shade, so if they can’t come inside where you are going, leave them at home in the air conditioning.

To help expel some of your dog’s energy but still stay cool, consider playing in the hose or sprinkler with your pet. It is a great way to keep you both refreshed and have some fun! If you have access to a pool or body of water taking your dog for a swim will help them get in activity but stay cool in the process. When using water to cool your pup you should avoid using any water that is ice cold however, as that can constrict blood vessels and make it harder for your dog to release excess heat. Wetting their ears with water or rubbing alcohol will actively help them cool off if you notice any signs of heat exhaustion. Be sure to keep a close eye on them and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat exhaustion in dogs, especially when doing outdoor activities. Signs include, excessive panting, rapid heartbeat, disorientation, collapse, brick red gums or tongue, vomiting and respiratory distress. If you notice any of these contact your vet immediately and start actively cooling them down. A normal temperature for a dog is between 98° and 102°, a dog’s temperature should never go above 103°. The best way to keep your dog safe and happy is just to be aware of them and their surroundings. Summer doesn’t have to mean indoors only for your best friend if you keep these tricks in mind.

Different frozen treats are a fantastic way to help your pup beat the heat, my St. Bernard loves plain ice and now comes running at the sound of our ice machine. Also freezing different stuffable toys with vet approved fillers can work wonders for a hot dog. Both my dogs love frozen watermelon or apples, and blended banana and peanut butter is always a crowd pleaser! Just be sure to check with your vet before changing your dog’s diet. By Carla Dubis Meet Katelynn Chase. A beautiful and talented stay-at-home mom to three energetic and happy children–Ashlynn, Zeke and Veva–wife of Dr. Austin Chase, and founder of “Katelynn’s Colors.” The main goal of “Katelynn’s Colors” is to take the proceeds from the sale of art pieces, prints and music lessons and use those funds to subsidize the cost of art and music lessons for low income families. Katelynn said “So many children are not born with the privilege and opportunities I was. I want to help open doors for those children to pursue art and music if it is their passion.” Katelynn’s husband, Dr. Austin Chase, is a Doctor of Chiropractic. He is actually a proud Floridian, born and raised here in Tampa Bay. He attended Plant High School and loves this city as much as Katelynn does. You may have seen his ad for Chase Family Chiropractic in this publication, it is currently located on the bottom of page 5. Katelynn, Dr. Chase and their three lovely children are the ones featured in the ad’s photo. While Dr. Chase works, the kids and Katelynn’s days are “filled with a lot of work, laughter, play, homeschooling, exercise, discipline, and learning about our Heavenly Father’s plan for us, made possible through our Savior, Jesus Christ,” said Katelynn. Katelynn shared with me that she began learning piano when she was about five years old. “I have always loved music and the arts. I was involved in many activities as a youth but music was what I was most passionate about. Eventually, I earned a Bachelors in Musical Arts from Brigham

From Left To Right: Dr. Chase, Ashlynn, Veva, Katelynn and Zeke Young University-Idaho, with an emphasis in piano performance,” said Katellynn. She met Dr. Chase while going to school in Idaho and it’s been quite an adventure since then, they moved a couple of times and had three wonderful kids. “I met my husband, Austin, in Idaho while working on my Bachelors degree. He was singing in the Men’s Choir and I was the accompanist for the choir. We got married a year and a half after meeting, and had our first child while at Brigham Young University-Idaho. After graduating we moved to Georgia for Austin to earn his doctorate degree in Chiropractic. We welcomed our other two children while in grad school. After grad school, we moved to Florida for work. It was here that the idea for the non-profit was born,” said Katelynn. “I came to a point where I didn’t know if I should seriously pursue teaching piano and selling my art, or let it rest while I raised my three young children. I put a lot of thought and a lot of prayer into it for many months. Finally, I felt that I should pursue it. While being a mother and wife are my priority and I consider them to be the highest and best calling I could ever have, I also realized that I needed something to give me an outlet. I feel like God told me I would be a happier and better wife and mother if I could also pursue my own interests and dreams. So, from this, “Katelynn’s Colors” was born. I immediately knew I wanted my organization to be a non-profit,” she added. A deep love for music and the arts, and a passion for helping others is what drives this non-for-profit. “I love the arts in any medium and I love the beauty that is added to the world through great art,” Katelynn said. “I have never been happy working if I was only working to bring in income for myself. But I knew if my work could make a positive

difference in the lives of others it would give me the motivation to get up and work hard every day to make it successful,” she added.

Katelynn Chase, Dr. Austin Chase from Chase Family Chiropractic and family at Curtis Hixon Park in Downtown Tampa Katelynn’s love for this particular style of art is thanks to her mother in law, Roxana. The style was mainly inspired by the work of famous painter and artist, Romero Britto. When I had the pleasure of meeting Katelynn at Doctor Chase’s office in South Tampa, I saw some of Katelynn’s custom art pieces, and I immediately recognized the style and influence of Romero Britto in her work. I studied Fine Arts in college, and I love to paint as well. Romero Britto is one of

my favorite painters of all time, so I was very impressed with Katelynn’s work. Katelynn’s mother in law Roxana, was very intrigued by Britto’s work and came up with a method of creating a similar style out of black foam board, scrapbook paper, and hodge podge. “When she taught me how to create it, I quickly fell in love with it. At first the designs were mostly copy work of others’ ideas, then I began to create my own designs. I have so many ideas and plans in my mind and I’m so excited for where this artwork is headed!” Katelynn said enthusiastically.

for your loved ones that reflect something they are interested in.. If you are a business owner, consider ordering a customized painting of your logo and hang it proudly on your wall. It would make a truly artistic statement and help your business stand out! If you would like to request a specific design, but do not want to purchase the original (would rather purchase the lower cost, poster print) Katelynn is more than happy to assist you with that as well. Katelynn’s proceeds will help fund a beautiful cause. “My main goal be able to use all proceeds to help subsidize the cost of art and music lessons for low income families. I will partner with teachers in all different art and music fields who will allow me to bring them students who can’t afford lessons. The families will pay what they can, and my company will subsidize the remainder of the cost.” Katelynn said. Obviously it will take some time for Katelynn’s Colors to grow and develop into this beautiful dream completely. “The future plans are to keep pushing forward. I expect that it will take a few years for me to get my business to the point where I am regularly and consistently selling artwork. I also plan to put together some online music courses within the next couple years so that people have a few options of classes to take (theory, history, cultural) that they are free to take on their own time and pace,” said Katelynn. Time is definitely on her side and Katelynn is happily willing to work hard until it comes to fruition.
