Having Trouble Hearing? Dr. Kelly Hansen at Trinity Hearing & Balance Wants To Hear From You! Last month, the cover of Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles featured Board Certified Audiologist, Dr. Kelly Hansen of Trinity Hearing & Balance Center. Dr. Hansen was very happy with the article written by Katie Thomas, but after printing, we realized that we inadvertently forgot to add the contact phone number for Trinity Hearing & Balance. Dr. We want to make sure readers know how to contact Dr. Hansen, who has been helping patients in our area for more than 20 years with hearing and balance problems. She has had great success in helping her patients to have a better quality of life whether they are in need of state-of-the-art hearing aids or are suffering from vertigo or tinnitus. In fact, Trinity Hearing & Balance is an Audigy Certified practice, and as such is able to utilize the Epley Omniax System for the detec-

tion and treatment of vertigo and dizziness associated with inner ear disorders. Tinnitus, commonly known as ringing in the ears, can drive a person crazy, but Trinity Hearing & Balance offers hope. Dr. Hansen believes with the revolutionary technology of SoundCure®, patients can find lasting relief from tinnitus. SoundCure® utilizes a simple, flexible sound therapy system called Serenade® that is developed specifically for one’s individual tinnitus. If you notice that your loved one is missing conversation or listening to the TV too loudly, it may be a sign that they are suffering hearing loss, which is quite common. It is so important to hear what is going on around us, not only for safety, but for pure enjoyment! Plus, when a person doesn’t hear well, it can affect their relationships.

Don’t suffer when help is nearby. Dr. Hansen at Trinity Hearing & Balance wants to hear from you because help is available. She says that 95 percent of people with hearing loss can benefit from today’s advanced hearing aid technologies. Trinity Hearing & Balance Center is located at 8605 Easthaven Ct., Suite 101, at the River Crossing Professional Center in Trinity. Office hours are Mon. – Thurs., 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., and by appointment only on Friday. Seeking Vendors with Unique Items The Cheval Women’s Club, a social club raising money for local charities, is looking for vendors with unique gift items or crafts to sell at their Holiday Bazaar on Tuesday, Dec. 10th from 6-9 p.m. at the Cheval Golf & Country Club. The congregation now makes its home in Tarpon Springs on US Highway 19 at #39330 in Bradley Plaza (where Optical Outlets and a variety of other businesses are located), after meeting at various local hotels. This family-oriented Temple began as a Chavurah back in 2010, led by Rabbi David Levin. A Chavurah, is a slightly less formal group of Jews and interfaith families who gather to pray together on the Sabbath (Friday night at sundown). After providing High Holy Day serv-

ices in 2012, free with donations accepted, at Ruth Eckerd Hall, a great deal of correspondence was received. The voluminous amount of mail beseeched Rabbi Levin to establish a location for his Temple. Rabbi Levin, who has dreamt of having a congregation of his own for many years, draws others in with his many talents – his ability to involve children in the services with readings and songs, his inspirational religious intellect, his melodious cantillations that are contagious to the listener, and his true sense of humanity toward all. He is passionate about the children and the Jewish Religion. These aspects all contribute to a welcoming and spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Rabbi Levin’s hope is to share the joy of Jewish living and learning across the generations, so that Judaism becomes a positive intellectual and emotional life-long presence that each individual attains by freely walking his or her own personal path to G-d. This is accomplished without the “politics”

that one typically associates with a religious organization. There’s no better way to begin that process than with the youngest members during Religious School, which meets every Sunday. The children look forward to our special music programs included in the school curriculum. Rabbi Levin also hopes that many of the currently unaffiliated Jewish and interfaith families in the area will attend a service and give Temple Beth Chai David the opportunity to help them rekindle a connection to their heritage, culture and the traditions of Judaism. His vision is to facilitate forming a community of members who support one another in times of difficulty, visit the sick, perform kiruv outreach, participate in charitable acts, share life's blessings in times of joy and work together to bring about tikkun olam, the betterment of the world around us. He delivers moving, meaningful sermons with which each congregant is able to identify and can relate to on a personal level. Written words simply cannot do justice to the quality of what is being offered each week by Rabbi Levin and Temple Beth Chai David. Temple Beth Chai David will be holding an Open House in the very

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Month In 1906, German neurologist, Dr. Alois Alzheimer performed an autopsy of a 56-year-old woman who was exhibiting problems with memory and disorientation. He specifically uncovered two signs in her brain - neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques. Over 100 years have passed and these identifying markers are the only definitive means of diagnosis. Its origin and cure still remains very elusive. There are a number of drugs prescribed for the patient but they do not offer a long-term treatment or cure. Despite tremendous research advances, this disease continues to affect the lives of over 5 million Americans and their families, with over 500,000 patients in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, the Alzheimer’s Family Organization’s service area of Central Florida has more than 100,000

patients at this time. As the Baby Boomer generation grows older, it is estimated that the National figure will rise to 16 million by 2030. Currently, one in ten individuals over 65 is reported to have the disease, and this number increases to one of two at age 85. The mission of the Alzheimer’s Family Organization is to provide educational programs, support services and assistance to caregivers, families, and individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. We have a number of programs and services to help families and they include over 40 support groups, respite care, wanderer’s identification, and other services to ease the burden. publicly reported data, allowing for the comparison of hospital safety performance. “This continued high ranking is yet another objective, third party recognition of the high quality of care provided here at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point,” said Shayne George, CEO of Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. “We are very proud of our staff’s effort to ensure our patients receive the safest hospital experience possible, in a patient centered environment each and every day.” A blue ribbon panel of the nation’s top patient safety experts provides guidance to The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, to develop the Hospital Safety Score. The Hospital Safety Score is calculated using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. “A” scores were awarded to for-profit hospitals, not-for-profits and public hospitals throughout the nation. Not all hospitals earned an “A. The Hospital Safety Score exclusively measures safety – meaning errors, accidents, and infections. To see the full report go to www.HospitalSafetyScore.org.

Pasco Sheriff’s Office Focuses on Helping Homeless Students and Children This Holiday Season Letter from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office: For many years, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office and Pasco citizens have raised donations and gathered food items to help those less fortunate in our community during the holiday season in December. While we are continuing this great tradition of helping out our fellow citizens, we are changing our focus to assist a particular group of citizens who need our support: homeless students and children. According to the District School Board of Pasco County, there are more than 1,700 homeless children in Pasco County

8

alone. This includes those that are “doubled up,” or living in another’s household; living in shelters; or unsheltered. The biggest change with our new focus on helping homeless children is that we will no longer be seeking and providing applicants with a food basket. All of our donations and food will be given directly to local organizations whose mission is to provide support for homeless children and students. Our collection process to support this worthwhile endeavor will remain the same. Monetary donations are accepted and we are also looking for non-perishable boxed or canned food

items, such as instant potatoes and canned vegetables. Please do not donate any food in glass containers, which break easily. We are also accepting hygiene items for children, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, and hair combs. There will be donation boxes placed in the lobbies of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office buildings beginning November 4. All Donations Must be Received by Wednesday, December 11 We have met with great success every year with our holiday food drive thanks to the generosity of agency members, community

groups, area businesses, and Pasco citizens. An example of this support includes the thousands of cans of food collected and donated by Pasco school students and employees. If you can assist us during our holiday food drive, it would be greatly appreciated. By making a small cash donation or buying an extra item or two each time you visit a grocery store, your generosity will help to make the life of a homeless child a little easier this holiday season. If you can help in any way, it will make a difference. Please contact the Pasco Sheriff ’s Community Office at 813-994-3845.

New Charter School Opening in 2014 – Classical Preparatory School By Kim Thomas Classical Preparatory School, set to open in Land O’ Lakes in the fall of 2014, will be the first public school in Florida to offer students a classical education. The classical style of education dates back to the time of Socrates and Plato and is designed to teach analytical and critical thinking, while also encouraging students to focus on building their characters to become self-reliant, responsible and trustworthy citizens. Classical Preparatory School will encourage in its students the character traits of humility, perseverance, responsibility, respect, selfcontrol, citizenship and trustworthiness. Though the acquisition of the site isn’t completely finalized, the school’s board members are confident that the school will open as planned in time for the 2014 school year at a site in north Land O’ Lakes. The board members include Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, Christina Johnston, and Anne Corcoran, a mother of six, an attorney in Pasco and wife to State Representative Richard Corcoran. When Lutzbased Berean Academy closed in 2011, Corcoran spearheaded the move to find a way to provide a tuition-free, classical education in a public school setting so that all children centrally located to the school could have the opportunity to thrive in this type of learning environment. “I find schools such as Brooklyn Latin, Washington Latin, Great Hearts Academies, and Ridgeview Classical inspiring,” explains Corcoran. “Each started as a charter school in their community not too long ago with the vision of providing an excellent liberal arts education. In just a few years, they have achieved a great degree of

14

success. Their academic results are a mirror of a deeper achievement –– instilling in students the ability to think critically and analytically about all areas of their lives. And this view of education can make learning really electric, wake up students to realize the world is a fascinating place with endless possibilities and complexities and questions which should be considered. And once a student figures this out, they become more engaged in the learning process, and, hopefully, stay that way throughout their lives.” Charter schools are public schools and as such, comply with the class size amendment so there will be no more than 18 students per class in grades k3 and no more than 22 students per class in 4th grade and up. Academic expectations will be high for students. Middle school students will be required to take two logic courses and high school students will take four years of math, science, English and history, along with classes in fine arts and humanities. Latin also will be required of Classical Preparatory students, beginning in the 3rd grade and continuing through 8th grade.

event that more students apply than there is room for, a lottery will be conducted by a third party and applicants will have an equal chance of being admitted through the random selection process. Siblings of lottery-selected students will be automatically selected to ensure that the needs of the families in attendance at Classical Preparatory School are met. Dates for the Open Enrollment Period, Enrollment Policies and Procedures, and the date for the lottery will be decided upon at this month’s board meeting. After that, dates will be set for Parent Information Meetings that will be open to all interested parents. In the meantime, if you are interested in finding out more about Classical Preparatory School, please visit online at www.classicalprep.org where you will find much information, including the benefits of a classical education. If you have a child or children in grades k-8, and think you are interested in applying, visit the webpage, click on “How to Enroll” and then “Letter of Interest.” You can fill out the Letter of Interest and submit it

from the website. This Letter of Interest does not obligate a student to attend the school nor does it guarantee admission. It serves only to demonstrate a possible interest in your child attending the school in the future. The school will use information collected from the letters of interest to keep parents informed of application deadlines and other information. For more information and to fill out a Letter of Interest form, please visit www.classicalprep.org. Email questions to board@classicalprep.org.

Room for 342 Students (K-8) in 2014 With a four-year contract approved by the Pasco County School Board (it was approved for five years but the opening was delayed for a year for planning), Classical Preparatory has availability for up to 342 students in grades kindergarten through eighth. The school plans to add a grade level each year over the next four years, going up to twelfth grade. In its fourth year, the school is approved for up to 518 students. In the

East Lake’s Two Most Prestigious Golf Clubs Offer New Golf and Social Memberships Once private Wentworth Golf Club and Crescent Oaks Country Club are now joined together by local owner Ace Golf. Both clubs now feature golf and social membership pricing at reduced rates never before seen in the region. Golfer’s and social members alike can now enjoy the benefits of two upscale golf and social clubs at a price less than half of what it cost five years ago, and far below other clubs in the area. Ace Golf’s revolutionary, new golf membership rates are deeply discounted during the slower, six-month “off-season” from May to October when most people play less golf, and greens fees drop. This is a radical change from other clubs that charge the same, higher rate year-round. With competitors offering membership at only one club for $300500/month, Ace Golf’s membership offers incredible value at $79-$154/ month single to $114-194/month. Family Rates are an average of a dis-

counted, off-season rate and an in-season rate. Potential applicants are encouraged to apply immediately, as only 125 of these memberships will be offered at each club, and only limited public tee times will be available to nonmembers. For those who enjoy golf and the camaraderie of others who like to play competitively or socially, an Ace Golf membership at Wentworth and Crescent Oaks offers added benefits like unlimited free greens fees, preferential advanced tee times, walking privileges not offered at other courses, complimentary range balls, men’s/ladies’ and couples’ leagues, golf privileges at sister club Pebble Creek Golf Club, and two free guest passes every month to share the clubs with friends and business associates. Whether you join as a member or play Wentworth or Crescent Oaks as a walk-in guest, you will find two enjoyable, contrasting, top-condition Steve

Smyers design golf courses, pleasant service, and well-maintained facilities. Both golf courses are recently renovated with new greens, manicured fairways, and tees to suit all levels of play. The clubs also boast updated clubhouses, fitness and tennis facilities (Crescent Oaks), new restaurants, and active social programs including activities for kids, couples, and singles. With these courses, you will see and make new friends and experience the game at your pace and pleasure.

For short-term residents, Ace Golf offers seasonal memberships. At the new lower rates, many Canadian and northern members are joining year-round at the same cost that they previously paid for six-month memberships. Those that don’t play golf are taking advantage of another membership “first”: free social membership. While most clubs offer social memberships at $100-150/month, Ace Golf offers single memberships at $39/month,

family $59/month. When you spend that amount monthly at Wentworth or Crescent Oaks restaurants, the membership is free. With social membership, you meet a great new group of friends and always have special meals, events, and holiday celebrations to look forward to – no more sitting at home and wondering what to do! Enjoy benefits like: private dining with special theme nights (Italian, Greek, Tapas, Seafood/fish fry); Sunday brunches and Easter and Mother’s Day Brunch Celebrations and holiday meals over Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and other holidays; special events and activities like dances, card games, “Newlywed Game” night, car shows, Tai Chi and even celebrity visits. Privileges are offered at Wentworth’s Member Dining Room and Mulligans Irish Pub as well as Crescent Oaks Grand Oaks Restaurant and Ballroom, so you get a variety of dining experiences and social programs. Master Jeweler Tom MacKinnon has been expertly perfecting his craft since his first job at a jewelry store. The owner of a jewelry store that Tom worked at as a high school student in Panama City, Florida recognized that he had exceptional talent and encouraged him to hone his skills and learn the art of jewelry creation. After high school, Tom moved to Sarasota and apprenticed for five years with a wellrespected designer named Terry Coffrin. In 1985 Tom began to work at his bench performing “trade work,” which allowed him to do repairs and to create jewelry for stores in his area. He worked as a jewelry manufacturer for four years, and managed a trade shop for five years before he became a jeweler for Littman’s Jewelers at Countryside Mall, where he stayed for 11 years. In 2004, Tom opened MacKinnon Jewelers. Tom MacKinnon has earned his Diamond Degree and his Pearl Degree from the Gemological Institute of America. Tom MacKinnon truly appreciates his experienced staff, which includes Debbie Rocchio, Gale Arnold, Bunny Calligan and Patrick Lainhart. “Everybody in the store has some form of formal jewelry training,” said Tom, “They have their Accredited Jewelry Professional Degree from the Gemological Institute of America, or something more. In fact, one of our sales personnel, Gale Arnold, is our resident Graduate Gemologist.” Everybody in the store loves jewelry and can help you find that something that will feel special to you. Working with a customer who said she rarely wears her jewelry because she doesn’t work anymore, Debbie said, “Every day is a special day! Every day

is a reason to celebrate and wear your jewelry. Even if you are just going to the grocery store, a beautiful, simple diamond necklace is perfect to wear!” MacKinnon Jewelers has an amazing array of fine jewelry in every style, from classic to modern, and from smart to sassy. Pandora Jewelry fans know that MacKinnon Jewelers has the best selection in the area and if you are a collector, the Black Friday bead will be available in limited quantity, so hurry in! There is a full line of Seiko watches available, but not only that, if you are interested in purchasing any type of timepiece, including Rolex, Breitling, Tag Heuer, or even a preloved Rolex, Tom and his associates can help you find exactly what you desire. MacKinnon Jewelers is the kind of store that people tell their friends and family about. Ellen from Heritage Springs brought her sister Linda, who lives in Tampa, to shop at MacKinnon Jewelers. Ellen says, “Since I’ve lived here, Tom is the only jeweler I will go to and it’s because of the personal service. Debbie and Gail are always wonderful!” Pam Ora, who has known Patrick for years, brought her ring in to be cleaned and said, “It’s just so important to have confidence in a jeweler when you are handing over your nice diamond, and you have that here. They are great!” MacKinnon Jewelers also repairs jewelry, re-strings pearls, buys gold, and replaces watch batteries. MacKinnon Jewelers is located at 3132 Little Road in the Mitchell Ranch Plaza. GetMoreOffers.Com is the New Face of Real Estate By Julie Kanehl Are you moving? Would you like to put your house on the market, but aren’t sure where to start or who you can trust? Have you thought about selling the house yourself, but aren’t sure how to get started? Do you wish you didn’t have to give so much commission to Realtors®, when you’re happy to do a majority of the work yourself, like designing and creating an MLS listing and showing your house? GetMoreOffers.Com is the affordable way to list your home, giving sellers the ultimate control over the sale, and on a site that attracts more than 100,000 buyers per month! All of this while being backed by a licensed experienced Real Estate Company and a Broker who sticks to his guns. This is the new face of real estate. Long ago, when the real estate world was a different place, a Realtor® would be the only one who could find you a listing, but with today’s technology, usually it’s the

30

buyer that ends up finding the home they want to live in by finding the listing themselves online and through websites that show MLS listings. Clearly, the market and the face of real estate have changed, so doesn’t it makes sense that the way we would go about selling our houses would change as well? Today, homeowners are more hands-on than they were in bygone years, and every penny counts. Selling your home by yourself can be an overwhelming experience, but handing all of the control over to a Realtor® who takes a chunk of the percentage home at the end of the day can make sellers feel like they’re losing on the deal. GetMoreOffers.Com is a safe middle ground for sellers, which gives them control of the process while saving them money. No-Nonsense, Discount Real Estate for Everyone ADDvantage Real Estate, as the authorized Florida brokerage of GetMoreOffers.Com, offers discount

listing services all over Florida, from Jacksonville and the Panhandle, all the way down to the Keys. Co-created by Broker Keith Gordon, who has nearly 30 years of experience in Florida, GetMoreOffers.Com offers discount real estate that can be tailor-made to suit each homeowner. Together with Erin Knorr, CEO of GetMoreOffers.com, who brought the amazing software to life, they’ve helped thousands of people sell their homes safely and affordably. Typically, in a full-service listing, buyers have to sign an agreement that states that they will work with one particular Realtor® for a period of time, usually six months, which eliminates the possibility of selling the home themselves in that time, even if a buyer shows up on their doorstep. Also, a 6% commission is generally shared between the listing agent and the selling agent, which means more

According to www.GetMoreOffers.Com, with an ADDvantage flat fee MLS listing, if you are successful in finding a buyer for your property without the assistance of a real estate agent, then you would pay NO commission; just the ADDvantage flat fee. It’s that simple.” GetMoreOffers.com gives sellers “real time” control of the selling of their home, by offering sellers the opportunity to purchase an MLS listing at an affordable flat fee, as well as creating an interactive portal where sellers can manage their listing, personalize it, add pictures and make adjustments to price, and even determine the buyer’s agent’s fee. Gordon says, “Everything happens in real time, seamlessly, and electronically.” Yuri Zygala said, “We just closed on the sale of our home and could not be happier with the results. We chose to use GetMoreOffers.com and ADDvantage Real Estate after a sale fell through using our listing agent. Making this choice was the best thing we did. I highly recommend using GetMoreOffers.com for your next home sale.” The GetMoreOffers.Com Advantage Having control doesn’t mean you won’t get the support you need during the sale of your home. GetMoreOffers.com offers amazing customer service to both the seller, and the interested parties, whether buyers or Realtors®. For a flat fee of just $299, your house can be “on the market” and on MLS within 24 hours. Your listing will benefit from premium internet marketing that offers up to 25 photos, a guarantee that it will show on your local boards, will be Showcased on Realtor.com as well as on partnered sites, including Zillow, Homes.com, Craigslist, Yahoo Real Estate, Trulia and more. The best part is that you, the seller, will control everything from the price of your house to when you’re available

to show your house to interested parties. Now, if you love the idea of taking that hands-on approach, but want the support and backing of a Real Estate agent for making sure that your buyers are pre-qualified, or to know when to negotiate, or when not to, then you might prefer GetMoreOffers.Com’s Professional ADDvantage Program, which includes everything from negotiating to the organizing and preparing all of the legal documentation that goes along with selling a home. This hybrid program is the best of both worlds, and is a huge value to sellers. This program is only $499 upfront, and just 3/4 of 1% due at closing (with a minimum of $1500). Gordon says, “Sellers who go with this program also get me, and I’m a no-nonsense discount broker. I use non-traditional negotiating techniques that save sellers money.” He adds, “I do this because I believe that buyers don’t go away after they’ve made an offer. If they’ve made an offer, they’ve already committed to buying your house, so I don’t always believe in countering.” While Keith Gordon also offers full service real estate services through his full service brokerage, Principal 1 Realty, he says many sellers and even full service agents utilize the discount services of GetMoreOffers.com and ADDvantage Real Es-

tate due to the value and extensive coverage of MLS systems throughout the state. (Many agents get listings outside of their board coverage area and look to GetMoreOffers.com to list their out-of-area listings rather than be subjected to the expensive fees to join the MLS themselves.) Since GetMoreOffers.com is affiliated with Frontier National Title and Patriot Lending, all of a seller’s real estate needs can be handled inhouse, from selling a house, or being approved, to buying a new one. Jurgen Schmidt said, “As a Realtor/Broker at a full-service firm, when it came time to list my out-ofstate property I never thought I would consider using a discount Brokerage agency, but… I’m so glad I did! Keith and his team at ADDvantage were awesome, the service and support were exceptional and they got results in no time! The entire experience far exceeded my expectations and I wouldn’t hesitate for an instant to use ADDvantage again or recommend them to everyone.” If you are looking to sell your house and save money while you’re at it, try GetMoreOffers.com and experience the new face of real estate. GetMoreOffers.com is open and online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To speak to an agent or to get more information, please call 1-877-232-9695.

Florida Hospital North Pinellas Aims to be Your First Choice! By Julie Kanehl Florida Hospital North Pinellas is focused on becoming your hospital of choice in your time of need. Whether you need an ER, are seeking cancer treatment, or you are looking for a way to live healthier, the Florida Hospital North Pinellas is a whole new hospital in terms of funding, research, technology, staff, physicians and outreach, while retaining the heart of the hospital that has stood in its place for more than 85 years. The history of this hospital is rather unique and goes back all the way to 1927 when Tarpon Springs Municipal Hospital was the second hospital in Pinellas County. With only two floors and twelve beds, the Tarpon Springs Municipal Hospital later became Tarpon Springs General Hospital, Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, and then Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital & UCH. However, Florida Hospital North Pinellas is far more than a new logo on an old product. Florida Hospital of North Pinellas takes an entirely new approach, especially to pa-

tient care, and when combined with the influx of funding, resources and the commitment from knowledgeable and experienced doctors, nurses and staff members, it’s no surprise that the hospital’s Grand Opening in 2012 was themed as a “New Day in Health Care.” Located in Tarpon Springs at 1395 South Pinellas Avenue, Florida Hospital North Pinellas is convenient to many surrounding areas, and it aims to become the hospital of choice for many residents, locally, regionally and beyond. Under the umbrella of Adventist Health System (AHS), Florida Hospital North Pinellas is now part of the largest, not-for-profit, Protestant health care provider in the nation. Now, Adventist Health System supports 44 hospitals in 10 states and employs nearly 55,000 individuals. AHS, locally known as Florida Hospital, has five locations around the

I arrived on a busy Saturday night and within two minutes of arriving I was taken back to the friendly staff and I saw the doctor shortly thereafter. I was on my way after some lab work within one hour and 25 minutes. Staff was great and Dr. White was very friendly, kind, and knowledgeable. I’ve been back two other times and each time was excellent. Following a procedure I received two follow up phone calls from the friendly nursing staff and a card thanking me for choosing Florida Hospital. I would choose no other place for my care. and to set their sights on those strategically planned goalposts that dot the road to a nice future. “I like to say, any road will get you there if you don’t know where you’re going,” says Scott. “It’s important to take an honest view of where you are in life and then step forward to get a solid financial plan. Ask yourself, ‘How much do I need to retire?’ And there really is no standard answer. It depends on how you want to live and where you want to be, which is different for all of us. I want to motivate people to pick up the phone and follow through with a meeting. We’re all about helping people plan for the future and helping them figure a plan of attack by saving and investing. By analyzing where they are and where they want to be, I can come up with a plan.” Scott, who has been in the financial industry since 1988, was raised outside of Cleveland, Ohio. He received his degree from Penn State in

He and his wife, Michelle, had a little Florida native of their own when their son AJ was born here 11 years ago, and they are fully part of the local community. “Most of my clients come from referrals,” says Scott. “People hear about me from other clients. I’ve had people walk up to introduce themselves at the soccer field to get to know me after someone has told them what I do.” When working with a financial planner, it is important to get to know one another and create a relationship because creating a financial portfolio is a very personal and personalized process. Scott’s status as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and a Certified Estate Planner™ gives him a greater depth of knowledge about the financial planning process and tools, and how to apply that knowledge to his clients in their individual financial

planning. Prior to joining Cornerstone Financial Planners, Scott was a Vice President and Regional Director at a large national investment company, but there are many benefits for clients who work with independent broker dealers, like Cornerstone Financial Planners, and that is what Scott wanted to be able to provide. Scott says, “The benefit of working with an independent Broker/Dealer is that we have access to different types of products that we can use. We have a very diversified platform of investment services. There isn’t anyone above us asking us to push our clients into anything in particular. We can completely customize your investment strategies.” “My clients are also my friends,” says Scott. “I just happen to do their financial investments as well. To me, the person is more important than the firm.” Scott Papes is easy to talk to and he wants to help you with your financial game plan. Passionate about his

career and educating clients, Scott encourages young people to realize the importance of saving. “The average American doesn’t start thinking of saving for retirement until their 50s. If they started thinking about it in their 20s, they’d have 30 years of saving already.” That isn’t to say it’s a lost cause if you didn’t save in your 30s, 40s, 50s or beyond. Scott advises that it is never too late, or too early, to be proactive in providing for your own future. Whether you are looking to create a modest or lavish future for yourself, you’ll have to have a plan in place and Scott has the experience, integrity and knowledge to help you build a strong financial portfolio. Brain Balance Achievement Centers By Alexis Selby As parents, we all want the very best for our children; for them to have the necessary skills and the ability to lead a successful and independent life; to make the right decisions and chart their own path for the future. So what do you do when you realize that there is something amiss – that your child isn’t progressing at the same rate, in some area or another, as other children their age, and is having difficulty with things that come so naturally to others? It can be quite devastating, for both the parent and the child, and many feel helpless, thinking they have no where to turn. But, just know, that there is hope; and, Brain Balance in Oldsmar, located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6, is seeking to help families dealing with this struggle to regain control of their lives and get their children back on track to success.

Personal Success Stories Cynthia Lucas – A right hemisphere weakness Mother Nancy Lucas first noticed something was unique with her

daughter Cynthia when Cynthia was over a year old. Nancy says, “She was already talking non stop and by the age of two she was speaking full sentences and paragraphs. Cynthia and I both were born very gifted with language.” But it wasn’t until Cynthia turned three that Nancy recognized that something might be wrong. Nancy says, “By the age of three, we knew something wasn’t right. She had a hard time with self – regulation and calming down; going to bed and taking naps was also a challenge for her. She was hard to manage and it was exasperating. Food was also an issue for her, especially the texture. It had to be a certain consistency or she wouldn’t eat it. She was also hyper sensitive and was greatly affected by noise and lacked the ability to withdraw if she got upset.” After years of dealing with the behavior and endless hours spent searching for a solution, Nancy was at her breaking point. She says, “We tried everything – diets, food allergy testing, counseling for both her and me, attachment disorder training, and had spent over three years and endless dol-

was going through. Nancy says, “He is the first person that really understood what I was going through and what Cynthia was going through. He gave us hope, and when we went to Brain Balance and Cynthia got the assessment – dysfunctional hemispheric imbalance (weak on the right side of the brain) – there was no question in my mind that this approach wouldn’t work. My husband and I were convinced.” Cynthia started at the center in March 2012, which consisted of three one-hour visits each week. With exercises uniquely tailored for her individual needs, Cynthia worked on everything from physical activities and multitasking, to creative writing and logical thinking. The change happened almost instantly. Within the first month Cynthia was willing to eat more foods and her sense on smell improved. Most importantly, she was able to sit down and eat because now she had enough ability to self- regulate to be calm enough to eat. Her outbursts became less frequent and less violent and her overall behavior dramatically improved. “Within three weeks of her starting the program I could see a difference,” says Nancy. “Brain Balance was a complete miracle. “I love Laura Crumley, Center Director and Larry and the rest of the staff at Brain Balance, and I am so grateful for what they have done in our lives. Cynthia is free, she is healed, and she is able to move forward in her life. She is now the delightful little girl that I always dreamed of raising!” Luke Henderson – A left hemisphere weakness Mother Nadine Henderson first became concerned about her son Luke when at 18 months old he was still not speaking words and as he got older, would make up his own lan-

guage which sounded much like Chinese. The older he got, the more she began to notice that he had a really short attention span and had several sensory issues. She says, “We could never take him to a grocery store or restaurant because of all the distractions; he would misbehave from sensory overload.” Transitioning was also a big challenge, but more on a long span as opposed to immediate. For example, if he stayed with his grandparents for the weekend, it would take 2-3 days for him to adjust to his schedule; the same thing would apply if he had time off of school, etc. Due to lack of comprehension, Luke’s exhibited ‘bad behavior’, which resulted in lots of frustration for the whole family, and especially Luke. When Nadine had Luke tested at the age of 3, they were told he had severe delays in language, speech, comprehension and fine motor skills and was showing signs of autism. But, despite all this, Luke was never given a specific diagnosis. Nadine says, “Since age 3 he was in the FDLRS program, and continued with IEP’s in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. He had Occupational therapy, speech therapy, and language therapy.” The breaking point came in the third grade, when Luke was placed with a new teacher that Nadine felt was not suited for him. “He had a new language therapist who he would complain about, which never happened before,” says Nadine. “He always loved the therapists. He could not focus with her because he was highly distracted by her breath and foot smell – a sensory issue.” After his teacher was out half the year due to her daughter’s illness, Luke had substitute teachers most of the time, and with his transition challenges, it caused him to come home, having broken all sorts of rules. He couldn’t keep focused, which in turn ended with no

self confidence in school. Nadine says, “I fought hard for Luke, and no one was listening. I wanted to scream. I kept driving by this place called Brain Balance and looked it up. I was on their website for a couple of hours and watched Dr. Robert Melillo’s speech. I really felt this could help Luke. After school, when I saw Luke’s face of yet another disappointing day, I pulled into Brain Balance and met Maria Mogollon, Assistant Director, who greeted me ever so kindly It was at this time that Nadine met Laura Crumley and set up an appointment to have Luke assessed. It was a two day assessment. At Brain Balance, they don’t diagnose; instead they pin point the problem - Luke had issues with weakness on the left side of the brain. “A lot of their non invasive tests showed us why he was having issues; for instance – his eyes,” says Nadine. “His vision was fine, but it’s the way his eyes communicated with his brain that was the problem. They had a solution which included a series of different exercises to strengthen his eyes. We learned the importance of core strength and brain function – and they had exercises for that as well. We also learned all about the importance of food sensitivity and how that can affect your child’s behavior and learning.” It was then that Nadine decided to sign Luke up for Brain Balance, which consisted of one hour sessions three times a week, in addition to home exercises, and nutrition changes. Nadine says, “We started seeing a remarkable difference in his overall attitude within the first week. He stopped complaining so much and he was happy all the time. Towards the end of the program I was able to have a full blown conversation with my son, with

Luke Henderson him being able to understand and comprehend what I was saying. His relationships with his father, brother, aunt, and friends all got so much better. Instead of everybody being frustrated all the time, we were all happy and having fun. As far as his learning challenges go, he is in a normal range now. For the first time ever he has just made honor roll. Thanks to Brain Balance he now has confidence and feels smart. He actually says that his brain is working right now. I just wish we would have found Brain Balance sooner; but better late than never!” Brain Balance Oldsmar, located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6 in Oldsmar, is open Mon., Wed. and Fri., 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.; and Tues. and Thurs,. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free parent information event: Saturday, 12/21 at 10 a.m. For more information please call (813) 475-6977 or visit www.BrainBalanceCenters.com.

Fish Company – Inspired by Faith and the Desire to Help Orphans Globally By Lenay Ruhl Some people write out proposals, researching and developing complex plans before starting a business. For the ladies of Fish Company it was simple; their faith was the foundation that inspired their business. Fish Co. is based on the story in the Bible of Jesus feeding the 5,000. As the story goes, Jesus was preaching to the masses. They had been listening to him speak all day and they were hungry. The disciples searched for food to feed them, but all it took was the offering of a small boy who had only five tiny loaves of bread and two fish for Jesus to create a miracle. As the disciples divided the food into baskets to distribute to the people, they were surprised when this small boy’s offerings provided enough food to feed the multitudes with plenty to spare. Fish Co. uses the model of this miracle as their guiding principle, believing that God will take what fish they have to offer, multiply them and use those fish to change the lives of or-

50

phans in need. They’ve exchanged loaves for handmade dolls and fish for purses, and their “crowds” are the more than 153,000,000 orphans around the world. Fish Co. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing homes for orphans throughout the world through the creation, sales and exchange of products using donated goods and materials. Fish Co.’s mission is both global and local. They are a local ministry, whose mission translates to a global change. Globally they are building orphanages and sending their dolls to comfort orphan children. Locally they are empowering and encouraging people of all ages to offer their gifts and skills to make a difference. All the items that Fish Co. has to offer are individually made and hand sewn using 100 percent donated materials. Those items are then sold and 100 percent of the proceeds are used to change the lives of orphans. Currently Fish Co. is partnered with ICM, International Cooperating Ministries,

The durable and roomy Samaki bags come in a variety of fabrics, which you can view online at fishcompany.org Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti and Uganda.” Fish Co. originated from the hearts of women who felt a need to make a difference in this world. In 2011 Julie Miller, Fish Co. Co-President traveled to Tanzania, where she experienced firsthand the plight of the more than 2,000,000 orphans in that small country. That trip served as the spark to ignite the passion each of these ladies felt to both use their creative talents and change the lives of children in need.

“It’s been amazing to see God at work,” said Julie, “after only a few months of ministry we are well on our way to meeting our first goal of raising funds to build an orphanage in Uganda.” Part of what makes Fish Co. special is that it is run entirely by volunteers. They do everything from cutting and sewing fabric to sweeping floors and sending ‘Thank You’ cards. Volunteer Kirsten Murawski said, “We’re always looking for donations, and more help.” Another thing that

makes Fish Co. special is that it is a family venture. Cindy and Julie are sisters and Dottie is their mom. Their husbands and children even get involved. “It really is a special thing, we have our family working together and friends frequently dropping by to lend a hand and bring donations,” added Julie. For them, this all goes back to the bible story of Jesus with the loaves of bread and fish; everyone gives what they can. As Kirsten put it, none of their wishes have gone unanswered, and they are continually finding people who are donating the things they need, including everything from thread to the flooring under their feet. Creating their bags and babies in their workshop, they have an open door policy for those who would like to come by and be a part of their ministry. They are currently selling their bags on facebook and their website www.fishcompany.org. They also frequently make appearances at craft shows and other events. The ladies of Fish Co. have a beautiful story to tell and want to share that story with the world. “What we believe God can do

with this is what drives us,” said Mary. The ladies laugh together, dreaming of Fish Co. expanding to other cities. They have shameless idealism and can imagine a world where every child has a home; where people from all over bring their own “fish” to the table, joining efforts in raising money to better the lives of orphans. To get involved with Fish Co. by volunteering, purchasing items, or making a donation, visit their facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/FishCoTampa and their website at www.fishcompany.org.

Experience the Reason for the Season; Experience Bethlehem By Dara Tucker Each holiday season, for the past eleven years, the Trinity area is given a gift from Hope United Methodist Church and more than 300 volunteers. It’s not in a package wrapped with a bow, but an outdoor area on the church property that is recreated to remind us of what Christmas was like over 2,000 years ago. For four consecutive nights the first weekend of December (Friday, December 6, Monday, December 9, 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.), visitors from all around come to experience Bethlehem for themselves. When you first visit you’ll notice the lines are well organized, and volunteers are in character as you wait your turn to enter the city walls. Before entering the city of Bethlehem you pass through enacted scenes of Mary and Joseph. When you enter the city you are encouraged to bring a canned good as your “tax” to be paid to the Romans who control the city. Visitors then have the opportunity to walk through the city of Bethlehem as

54

they encounter shopkeepers, dancers, soldiers, and those living in and visiting the city during a census taken by Caesar. Children are encouraged to play music as they come through, practice kneading dough, and play with clay in the different shops in the city. The simplicity, yet excitement of the city lightens up both children’s and adults’ faces. After journeying through the city, visitors will encounter shepherds and angels that are spotlighted as they sing of the new King’s birth. As you pass the three kings you notice they are adorned with ornate clothing and riches, as they search to find Jesus to bring gifts to. When you visit the innkeeper, you’ll find there’s no room in the inn. Live animals greet you before finally you see the star and manger where Christ was born. Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus are there awaiting you after your long journey. Many children leave small gifts they’ve received throughout the city,

such as beads and coins for the baby. Some leave notes and cards they’ve made from home. The beauty and calmness of the scene makes a handful of visitors cry each year. After you have finished your travels, you are welcomed to stop and write a prayer request or take a moment to reflect in prayer. The night ends with cookies and hot chocolate in the sanctuary, where you find families sitting and sharing their favorite parts of the night. Because Experience Bethlehem takes place early in December, it allows visitors to carry the feeling of the night with them throughout the month.

NOVEMBER 2013

In the past five years, Experience Bethlehem at Hope United Methodist Church has averaged over 5,000 guests yearly, and has collected over two tons of food each year as the “tax” that the Romans collect from the guests upon entry to the city. The food is distributed to local food pantries, helping to serve local families in need during the holiday season. If you would like to help with this event by either donating your time or a monetary donation, please email or call the church office. Sisters Baylee and Rylee Bolden have volunteered their time for Experience Bethlehem for the last two

years, and have found it to be a rewarding experience. Baylee says, “ . . . I love seeing it! Seeing it all set up and knowing that you’re a part of it is one of the greatest things ever. Being a part of Bethlehem is both fun and rewarding.” Rylee adds, “You really get into your role and feel like you’re actually experiencing Bethlehem. Seeing the children’s bright, amazing faces from the minute they enter to the minute they leave is one of the best things I’ve ever seen!” Dates for this year’s Experience

Bethlehem are December 6, 7, 8 and 9 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. nightly. Hope United Methodist Church is located at 2200 Little Road, Trinity, across from Mitchell High School. Sunday’s Traditional Service starts at 8:15 a.m., and Contemporary Services are at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Childcare is provided during all Sunday worship services. “TPCoSS” Continued from page 1 to church a wonderful and rewarding experience for you and for your entire family. Always welcoming new people to their congregation, the Pastor and people of TPCoSS extend their hands to the entire community. Hollins says, “We really do have people of all ages at our church and we do everything we can to serve them all.” Get Closer to God! Families are a large part of the TPCoSS congregation, and there are a lot of exciting programs for children. For example, their Children’s Ministry focuses on sharing the word of God in a loving and nurturing manner so that every child can come to know the love of Jesus Christ. Children are always welcome in the worship services and they make every effort to help families feel comfortable, from providing a cryroom where parents can listen to the service even if their little ones are fussy, to providing a staffed nursery for babies as young as six weeks old. Sunday School isn’t just for the kids at TPCoSS! At 10 a.m. every Sun-

58

day, which is right between each service, TPCoSS offers Christian Education Classes for people of all ages; in fact, every Sunday is “SONday at TPCoSS! Starting with children as young as three, Sunday school is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to participate in fun and relevant, scripture-based activities. Barbara Ticich, who leads the Children’s Ministries program at TPCoSS said, “We take a very hands-on, Montessori-style approach with the children, which they just love.” The older children, teens and adults in the congregation also have the opportunity at this time to participate in a number of Christian Education Classes that teach the values and lessons of the Bible. Starting in January of 2014, the entire church will be embarking on a 31-week journey called The Story. Written like a novel, The Story is an approach to understanding God’s story and how our individual stories belong within His. A powerful experience for Christians all over the world, it’s a great opportunity for everyone to become closer to God. Get Involved! One of the most exciting things about Trinity Presbyterian Church of

Starting at 4 p.m., there’s a wonderful program for elementary-school-aged children called Kids-Famiy-Christ, or KFC as it’s better known. KFC offers kids the chance the play, learn, and connect while they worship and even serve the community. Also at 4 p.m. the Middle School youth group meets, followed by the high school youth group, from 5:30–8 p.m. From lockins and parties to worship on the beach, summer camps and more, there is always something going on for kids

“St. Francis Pet” Continued from page 1 a job for my team. They see it as their mission, often coming in early, staying late to care for and restore our patients to wholeness. Our follow-up care is second to none.” Meet the Friendly Veterinarians Michael Amsberry, DVM and Laurie Greene, DVM combine their unique services to offer a well-rounded and holistic approach to veterinary care at St. Francis Pet Care Center. Dr. Amsberry bought St. Francis in 2010 and Dr. Greene joined him this year in May. Dr. Amsberry was born the 7th of 8 boys and raised on farms in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon. From the age of 12 until he graduated from veterinary school, he

Dr. Michael Amsberry and Dr. Laurie Greene

worked as a residential housepainter. He attended Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio earning a BA in Biology/Chemistry in 1986, and then attended Oregon State College of Veterinary Medicine, where he graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1990. Dr. Amsberry founded a small veterinarian practice in his hometown in 1995, which he ran successfully until he and his wife Jenny sold it in 2008 so they and their two teenage children could move to Florida to be close to Jenny’s family. The Amsberrys love it here and especially enjoy the East Lake area. Currently, their family pet members include a mother and son set of Yorkies, Truffles and Fudge, and two local rescued cats named Suri and Belle. Dr. Amsberry takes a cutting-edge approach in his practice and has developed special interests in preventative care, internal medicine, dermatology, geriatrics, dentistry, orthopedics, laser surgery and most recently, alternative care such as laser-therapy, nutrition, and acupuncture. He hopes to limit the use of drugs in his patients. Dr. Laurie Greene hails from New York City, and is delighted to have escaped cold winters for good. She is a graduate of Ohio State University, and is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist.

Dr. Greene enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, from wellness care to surgery, and has a strong interest in nutrition and alternative medical modalities. While in New York, Dr. Greene was affiliated with the prestigious Heart of Chelsea Animal Hospital, and had her own House Call Veterinary Practice. Dr. Greene has two sassy cats of her own; the frisky felines “allow” her to stay in their house and take care of all their needs. Dr. Greene is excited to be part of the team at St. Francis Pet Care Center and is delighted to help take care of the health needs of the lovable pets in our area. She is particularly eager to be part of St. Francis’ service expansion into alternative medical modalities such as acupuncture and laser therapy, and to include house calls and Hospice care among the many services offered at St. Francis Pet Care Center.

state-of-the-art and completely paperless, which allows the staff to view, send and display your pet’s medical records easily. All radiographs can easily be sent for a second opinion by a boarded radiologist and the results arrive within the hour. St. Francis has an in-house lab for quick test results. Dr. Amsberry says: “It has become very apparent over the last 20 years that periodontal disease, while not only very uncomfortable, directly contributes to multiple diseases in the body. We are convinced that excellent dental care will provide your pet with a much higher quality of life and increase his/her longevity. At least 60% of all dental disease in pets can only be detected with X-rays. We include full mouth X-rays with every dental so as not to miss anything that could be hurting your pet. Our X-rays are digital, and we review them with the Pet Parents at our discharge ap-

Exceptional Services “We understand how important the presence of pets are in our lives,” says Dr. Amsberry. “I truly believe that pets are angels sent to help us through the tough times and join us in celebrating the good times. We strive to manifest our goals of complete wellnesscare throughout our hospital, grooming, and resort.” The pet hospital at St. Francis is

pointment.” One of the unique services that St. Francis offers is low-level laser therapy; with five FDA approvals for people, Dr Greene says the newest technology of laser healing is beneficial for everything from arthritis to helping wounds heal quicker. Dr. Greene specializes in pet acupuncture and can help you decide if acupuncture and laser treatment are right for your pet’s health. St. Francis is a cat-friendly practice. A separate entrance and exam room have been designated to accommodate their feline friends. Dr. Greene also provides house-calls for kitties that are just too scared to make the trip in. With traditional and alternative veterinary services, a grooming Salon, lodging at The Resort, hospice care and even house calls – St. Francis Pet Care Center truly offers it all. St. Francis Pet Care Center offers clients Preventicare Plans to help pet owners obtain excellent preventive care. This wellness assurance starts at $23.95 a month and can save you as much as 40%. Puppy and kitten plans are offered in addition to adult pets. “We started the program a year ago because we saw that a main concern of clients was related to being able to afford excellent health care for their pets,” says Dr. Amsberry. “Preventicare

is a discounted program we designed and manage, which allows for clients to make regular monthly payments that spread out the financial burden. It secures very high quality preventative care for our patients.” As a bonus, there is no charge for the exams throughout the year and added discounts for The Resort and Salon. Grooming –– Salon at The Resort The groomers at St. Francis take pride in their art and are trained to keep a watchful eye on skin conditions or other discomforts in your pet. St. Francis offers three different “Spaw” Packages and even offers grooming for cats. The walk-in tub makes it so much easier for large breed dogs and those

with mobility issues. There is nothing quite like having a freshly cleaned friend to play with and snuggle! St. Francis is dedicated to bringing you the best grooming techniques and products available, always looking out for the safety and comfort of your best friend. The Resort at St. Francis Pet Care Center focuses on your pet’s comfort and care. The team at St. Francis is the heart and soul of service. Guests get to stretch their legs in one of five play areas, at least 4 times a day with optional pool time and pupsicles. Coming soon in the eight private suites will be cameras so that you may see how your pet(s) are doing from anywhere in the world 24/7. Your baby will get plenty of exercise and massive amounts of love at The Resort. The team loves to pamper all the guests visiting The Resort and cater to all their needs, making for a happy stay that isn’t overwhelming in any way. Giving Back The St. Francis Pet Care Center staff has a passion for helping pets. Dr. Amsberry believes in giving back to the community. He founded a non-profit program over a decade ago called “Vets For Pets”, dedicated to educating the community on pet wellness, safety and even helps place abused or mistreated animals in loving homes. Check out St. Francis’ facebook for photos and videos of their Extreme Pet Makeover series where St. Francis adopts a homeless pet in need of care, restores them to good health and then places them into a forever home. Dr. Greene says, “The stories are

emotional and phenomenal! This program gives us a chance to connect with the community on a compassionate level, while showing the miracles that can occur with love and veterinary care” Both the doctors and staff members visit schools frequently to teach kids about dog safety and how to approach or deal with animals. Dr. Amsberry became involved in dog bite prevention 20 years ago and developed the program called “Nip the Bite,” because many children are bitten each year, suffer both physical and emotional injuries, often developing a lifelong fear of dogs. Teaching children the proper way to approach and behave around dogs prevents bites. St. Francis Pet Care Center will be visiting public libraries and local pet stores to present their “Pet Edge” series that discuss topics from Chinese herbs to heat-stroke prevention. Make sure you stay updated with St. Francis Pet Care Center’s website and facebook page for information regarding upcoming events, Extreme Pet Makeover stories and Pet Edge dates. For those wanting to “Wag more and Bark Less” look for the up and coming “Tails and Ales” parties that St. Francis will be hosting at local tap houses around the community! St. Francis Pet Care Center is located at 3591 Keystone Road in Tarpon Springs. It is open Mon–Fri 8-5 and Sat 8 -Noon.
