We’re very excited to be involved in such a worthwhile cause.” Dr. Shirmo says, “These are not the big-money players who have millions of dollars in the bank, but the players who played more minor roles, but who took on greater injuries.” Since their practice has opened, they have helped countless patients, and in doing so they have become a part of many of the families in Trinity, including my own. I have been a patient since 2008 and I can honestly say that I love these doctors, and I know that I can call on them in a time of need. It may sound a tad corny to say that love is at the center of Trinity Family Physicians and their entire practice, but then again, why would we want it any other way? If there were more heart in the medical field would it change the way it worked? Perhaps that’s why their personal approach is so popular. One of their patients said, “Dr. Eldridge is one of the most knowledgeable physicians in this area. She cares about the patient and is also involved with the community and promotes positive caring to all. She is

After medical school, they completed their Family Practice Residencies at Florida Hospital, a Christian and “faith-based” hospital in Orlando, Florida in 2006. Today, both doctors are committed to continuing their education, training medical students and working in the community. In addition to his practice at Trinity Family Physicians, Dr. Shirmo serves as Medical Director for Madison Pointe Rehabilitation and Health Center in New Port Richey. Additionally, he is a Medical Director of a home health company called Suncrest Omni, which allows him to teach and provide medical consultations for patients at many facilities in the Bay Area. Drs. Eldridge and Shirmo have also been selected as exclusive medical providers for Mike Ditka’s NFL Gridiron Greats Charity, helping exNFL players who were injured while playing ball. Dr. Eldridge says, “There are only seven locations in the whole country, and we are the primary care doctors for the program in this area.

This husband and wife physician-team has one simple goal, and that is to have their family take care of yours. Stephanie Eldridge, M.D., MPH, and Amir Shirmohammad, M.D., MPH, (a.k.a. “Dr. Shirmo”) are Board Certified family physicians who offer personalized medical care in a variety of ways to each of their patients. Their office is located at the Trinity Professional Place complex (at the corner of Trinity and Duck Slough Boulevards) at 1817 Cypress Brook Drive, Suite 101. Their practice is both high-tech and old-school, offering patients all of the latest technology for record keeping, prescription access and communication, combined with good old-fashioned, hands-on care.

Community News Briefs

By Diane Galemmo Bachelor, Basket and Services Auction a Big Hit The Community Service Council (CSC) of West Pasco hosted its 11th Annual Bachelor, Basket and Services Auction presented by Scott McPherson, PA, late in July and the event was a great success. The CSC’s major fundraiser is glamorous and fun, albeit a bit risqué and, not unexpectedly, overflowing with women. The few men guests who attended the event were busy watching the women watching the men, especially during the Chippendale-style routine when two young men climbed onto a makeshift stage in the center of the ballroom and performed to the thrill of the women who shouted and cheered their appreciation. The highlight of the evening was the bachelor auction which gave guests the opportunity to bid not only on a dream date with one of Tampa Bay’s most eligible bachelors; but also

4

on eight various service packages. Twelve bachelors between the ages of 22 and 60 climbed up on center stage and preened before the ladies in their own inimitable way while the emcee Tim McClain and DJ Josh Brown expounded their many virtues. Along with each bachelor came a date package. Some of the packages offered were adventurous, like zip-lining, kayaking, or driving a Ferrari or Lamborghini racecar. Other dates included boat cruises, concerts, dinner theaters, sporting events, and, of course, elegant, romantic dinners. The date and service packages were donated by generous businesses and local groups. The winning bidder had the option to go on the date with their bachelor or bring their own guest. The eight service packages auctioned off included a lawn package, a garden package, limo services, a home-sparkle package and a bathroom makeover package. All service packages were valued from $700 to $4,000. The $4,000 package called “Your Honey Don’t Have To List”

featured a home makeover while its owners were offered a 3-day getaway vacation. A Chinese Auction featuring many elaborate baskets from community donors continued all evening. The 50/50 raffle earned $1,750 and the live and silent auctions brought in $12,935. Amazingly, the last bachelor on the list, Jonathon Emminger, 29, received the highest bid at $2,500! The date package he chose for his lady begins with brunch, then zip-lining, three one-hour personal training sessions, color and hair styling, a great place for dining after “flying” on high, a next-day massage, a one-month free membership to Family Fitness Center and more. All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit local West Pasco non-profits, and offer scholarships to students. The funds also help support special

project grants and community outreach projects. In 2012, the CSC supplied 2,500 dinners to needy people. The Community Service Council of West Pasco was formed in 1979 by a group of professionals working for several service agencies in the area. The CSC’s purpose is to provide networking opportunities while supporting projects and organizations for the betterment of the community. CSC president Shawn Foster, who previously served as Congressman Gus Bilirakis’s District Director, said, “If you are not a member (of the CSC) I would invite you to join us and encourage you to attend our next monthly meeting on Sept. 12. You will join a group of community leaders who want to make a difference in our community.” Event sponsors and those people and organizations who donated gift baskets were gratefully acknowledged and appreciated by co-chairs Amanda Murphy and Marsha Arnold. According to event chair, Amanda Murphy, the fundraiser netted over $20,911 for the CSC. For more information about the CSC, telephone 808-4131 or log on to www.communityservicecouncil.org. If You Love Homemade Italian Food, Dine at Anthony’s Italian Restaurant By Julie Kanehl Anthony’s Italian Restaurant is probably best known for its mouth-watering, 24-inch, New York-style, feedeverybody-with-one-pie, pizza. Which at my house isn’t complete without Anthony’s homemade, melt-in-yourmouth, get-your-own-dozen, garlic knots. That said; Anthony’s Italian Restaurant is exactly that, a charming restaurant that serves Italian favorites and specialties that transport you to Little Italy. With real New York flare, Anthony’s is ideal for any night of the week, from date night to family night, with quiet booths set aside for couples, and large tables ready for busy families. It’s an “everybody’s welcome, rub your tummy with a smile on your face, but still make room for a cannoli” dinner destination. Offering carryout and delivery options as well, it is no surprise that Anthony’s is a family favorite in Trinity. Located in the Mitchell Crossing plaza at 8809 Mitchell Boulevard,

Anthony’s Italian Restaurant is a convenient place to meet friends, family, or that someone special for a great meal. Rich Baker and Karla Barkdoll have owned Anthony’s Italian Restaurant since 2007, and just recently, remodeled their dining room and added premium wines to their already popular wine menu. Already focused on providing classics, they are always adding new items to the menu as well, like their “7” whole wheat pizza with unlimited toppings. Soon, they will be offering some new seafood options to the menu including Parmesan Crusted Tilapia and a Salmon Fillet. A former U.S. Marine who served on the Presidential Helicopter Squadron from 91-95, Rich is no stranger to the restaurant world. In fact, he’s been working in restaurants since he was a teenager, and that’s where he met Karlawhen they were just 16. Need New Flooring? For The Floor Has It Covered! By Julie Kanehl It’s almost fall, and the kids are back at school, and while that might only mean a change in a degree or two around here, it’s the perfect time to be thinking about getting your house ready for the holidays! This year, do more than walk on your floor, truly enjoy it. I love having people to the house, but when the carpet looks old or aged, I feel much less confident about having that big party, or the neighbors over, which is why For the Floor is the perfect destination for anyone like me, who needs an affordable floor makeover. Whether you’re in the market for a good quality carpet that is both soft to the touch and stain resistant, or you’re wondering what the price difference is between laminate and hardwood, the professionals at For the Floor have you covered. Offering everything from vinyl and tile to beautiful hardwoods, For The Floor offers flooring solutions for everyone, from residential homes to commercial businesses, and I think it’s important to mention that it is a top

14

choice for many Bay Area contractors over the years. Family owned and operated, For the Floor is the sister store to The Carpet Store, which has a location in St. Pete and another in Tampa. Together, each employee brings years of experience, professionalism and knowledge with them to each free consultation and installation. The For the Floor location in New Port Richey is located just south of S.R. 54 on U.S. Hwy 19 N., and their giant warehouse is stocked with more flooring products and expertise than you’re going to find at a “big box” store. Ethan New, owner and manager of For the Floor, has always worked in the flooring business. In fact, as a young man growing up north of here in the Carolinas, he would spend his summers at his grandfather’s store down here in Ethan’s grandfather, J.D. Manning, started the family business in 1980 and opened the original Bob’s Carpet Mart before selling it and opening a new flooring company that he named The Carpet Store in 1988. Today, Ethan and his cousin, Brian Manning (CEO of The Carpet

Store locations), have created a group of stores that work together to put their customers first. Like their website says, it’s the best of both worlds – you get the personal attention and experience of an independent retailer, but the prices and variety of a large chain! The For the Floor store was opened six years ago and Ethan says, “I want people to know that we are family owned and operated and that our installers have worked here for a minimum of 15 years. Everybody that works with us has been in the flooring business a long time. Our experience makes a huge difference, and we are price conscious.”

With brands like Anderson Hardwood Flooring, Beaulieu of America, Bruce Hardwood Flooring, Mohawk Carpet and Flooring, Shaw Floors, Stainmaster Carpet, BR 111 Exotic Hardwood Floor, and Wear-Dated Carpet Fiber, the possibilities are endless. Carpet – Durable & Cozy If you are looking for quality carpeting at affordable prices, For The Floor is the place for you. With major brand names like Mohawk, Dixie Home and Dream Weaver at the ready, their selection is hard to beat. Ethan says, “Carpet has changed

Carpeting, hardwood, laminate, vinyl, rugs and more - For the Floor has every type of flooring to choose from so every homeowner can find exactly what they want to meet their individual needs, their desires and their budget! a lot in the last few years. 90% of it is stain free because of the way that the fibers are made so most have a lifetime stain warranty. Plus, most carpeting is made of recycled materials now, which saves money and has made carpeting more affordable.” When asked what his most popular carpet was, he said, “Our WearDated carpet in Embrace.” Wear-Dated® carpet is an amazing option for busy families because WearDated® carpeting is made of a premium-branded nylon carpet that is comfortable, durable and beautiful as well. He adds, “We offer it for $2.69 per square foot.”

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

Laminate You’ll Love Laminate flooring is hugely popular with homeowners because it is beautiful, easy to clean and more durable than even hardwood. Laminate flooring comes in a wide variety of textures, finishes and styles at For The Floor, and one of their experienced sales consultants will take the time to help you choose exactly the right laminate for your family. Estimates are always free, and financing is available. Ethan says, “Our popular Shaw Mainstreet laminate has a 12mm attached pad and we offer it for just $2.49 per square foot.”

Of course, they also offer brands like Mohawk and Tarkett, so whether you’re looking for a traditional hardwood look, but want the durability and price of a laminate, or you’re wanting to spice things up with an exotic wood look, laminate is becoming the go-to choice in flooring design. Hardwood Flooring Done Right For many of us, there’s nothing like a hardwood floor. It’s both warm and cool on our feet, easy to clean, and it takes any room and makes it brilliant. You may have heard the term, “Floating” wood floors, “click” or even “locking” hardwood floors. They all mean the same thing – it’s a wood floor that is not glued down, that’s because wood doesn’t behave the same way in the hot Florida weather as it does up north where the temperatures are less extreme. Ethan explains, “We suggest and only carry locking hardwood floors because in Florida concrete and wood glue don’t go together very well. Our Seneca Creek (locking) hardwood is just $3.69 per square foot.” If you’re looking for a more exotic look, like bamboo, For The Floor offers three different options in bamboo alone. They offer something called strand bamboo that is at least two times as hard as regular bamboo

because it is shredded and then glued back down, giving the wood a totally unique presentation. Volunteering, A Labor of Love By Diane Galemmo Ann Poole, 72, and her husband retired to Heritage Springs in Trinity from Long Island in 2000. They followed their two daughters who had already relocated to Florida. However, the word “retired” was not in Poole’s vocabulary. Almost immediately, she joined The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), which is a national program created by Congress in 1971 to encourage individuals 55 years of age and older to put their skills and life experience to work for their communities by volunteering. Poole’s first foray was at Trinity Elementary, where she dedicated herself to helping teachers and students. Two of those teachers, Karen Griner and Kim Campbell, were transferred to Trinity Oaks Elementary and asked the dependable Poole to follow. She joined them at Trinity Oaks helping with kindergarten, first grade and third grade classes. “The third graders are so great,” says Poole. “Every Friday we have a group hug.” The students signed a large pink sign, which reads, “Thank you Mrs. Poole.” She now has it hanging in her home and plans to keep it there for a long time. Poole has now volunteered at the school for ten years and she was re-

26

cently honored with a plaque from Trinity Oaks Elementary for her dedication. It reads, “Outstanding Retired and Senior Volunteer of the Year.” Many of her students, now grown up, still come to visit her. Poole’s husband passed away in 2005 and she added to her volunteer hours. Once she learned about the Special Olympics of Pasco County, she said, “I saw it was a good charity and all the money was dispersed directly to the athletes.” So she and Tom Leopold, also a Heritage Springs resident, started fundraising in 2001. U.S. Homes supported their first endeavor. Poole came up with the idea of “A Night at the Races,” which is now in its 13th year at Heritage Springs and is held annually by the Heritage Springs Association and the Heritage Springs Country Club. Poole and Leopold were co-chairs during all that time, and this year, Poole, along with her committee, ran it solo. During its first year Night at the Races raised $1,200. This year it raised $19,465. During those 13 years of Night at the Races it has raised a total of $170,000! Poole received a plaque from the Special Olympics of Pasco, which reads, “2013 Volunteer of the Year…Let Me Win but if I Cannot, Let Me Be Brave in the At-

tempt.” Heritage Springs is the largest contributor to the Pasco County Special Olympics behind the school district of Pasco County. With apparently limitless energy, Poole initiated a monthly Trivia game at Heritage Springs, making up the questions by using 15 old Trivia sets. The game is so popular that people stood in line outside the clubhouse until it opened so they could buy tickets. To accommodate everyone, Trivia is now being held twice monthly with Poole serving as Mistress of Ceremonies. And there’s more. Poole teaches the game of Mah-jongg to Trinity residents and serves as a notary public. Interestingly, being a notary public entitles one to perform weddings in Florida and to sign the marriage certificate. Poole has performed 10 weddings and says she enjoys it. There are only three states in the United States where a notary can perform a marriage ceremony – Florida, South Carolina and Maine. In her “spare” time, Poole enjoys dancing and spending time with her three granddaughters. She is part of the Pat Griebel dancers, The Silver Follies, a cast of 28 women over the age of 55 who bring their special two-hour performance to Heritage Springs, Timber

Anne Poole with the Silver Follies Dancers Greens and Meadow Oaks once each year. At other times, they perform at clubs, libraries and civic associations, nursing facilities, charitable organizations and private parties in Pasco, Pinellas and parts of Hernando. “At this age (each costume change) takes us a while,” chuckles Poole. She purchased her very first pair of tap shoes 11 years ago. Since then, Poole has been going strong; continuing the gig even after her own granddaughters outgrew the stint on stage a few years ago. “I’m having a ball,” she says.

Ideal Protein Weight Loss and Rodan + Fields Skin Care The Ideal Weight Loss Protein Clinic allows M.D. Complete Fitness to help their clients who want to lose weight safely. In order to be eligible to run an Ideal Weight Loss Clinic, Michelle had to pass her Nutritional Consultant and Neuromuscular Physiology degrees. The program has high quality foods that make it easy to feel full and satisfied. Many clients find that the Ideal Protein Weight Loss program is a fantastic complement to Pilates. Stacey Gonzalez started Pilates with Michelle five months ago and was hooked. Stacey says, “I’ve worked out my whole life, and it got to the point I felt like I was wasting my time because nothing was working anymore. When I tried Pilates my body felt challenged again. The results you get for the amount of time you put in are amazing. I started using the Ideal Weight Loss program a month ago to lose the stubborn five pounds that I’ve always fought with and I lost it within two weeks. The food tastes amazing, and eating healthier has helped my Crohn’s disease.” Stacey’s daughter Ashley Levine

makes the drive from UCF as often as possible to work out with Michelle, too. Stacey explained that Michelle’s motivation allows you to reach goals that you never thought you could achieve. As a mom she loves that her daughter carries the positive self-image that she gains from M.D. Complete Fitness with her when she goes back to college. Rodan + Fields is high-quality skincare line now being offered for purchase at M.D. Complete Fitness. Michelle wanted to carry a product that could help women feel better about their skin, like they’re doing by creating healthy bodies through Ideal Protein and Pilates. “Umbrellas for Peace Created a Colorful Display of Togetherness in Tampa

The kickoff to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay’s new awareness and recruitment campaign was a great success. Nearly 200 volunteer mentors, parents, and children attended “Umbrellas for Peace” on Sunday, July 14, at the Glazer Children’s Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. Bigs (volunteer mentors) and Littles (children) spent time discussing their thoughts about peace and helping the community, while painting umbrellas with messages of hope at the museum. Guided by stilt walkers from Busch Gardens, they then showcased their masterpieces during a colorful parade around Curtis Hixon Park. The parade culmi-

Umbrellas for Peace started out as art therapy for people affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has since blossomed into a global peace initiative. More than 2-million people from 29 countries have participated in artist Matt Lamb’s “Umbrellas for Peace” concept. Sunday was be the first time the event was held in Tampa. When initially presented with the idea, Stephen Koch, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Inc., felt it was a perfect tie-in with our new recruitment ini-

tiative. “Just like umbrellas shield us from the rain and storms, good mentors can shield kids from some of life’s harsher elements,” Koch said. In coming months, Big Brothers Big Sisters will host and partner in events intended to spur discussion about the need for mentors, especially men. Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters matched more than 1,700 kids with mentors in Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties. Yet, more than 600 children remain on the waiting list. Statistics have shown the positive effects of the professionally supported mentoring that Big Brothers Big Sisters provides. In 2012, 99 percent of Littles had no involvement

with the Department of Juvenile Justice, while 96 percent were promoted to the next grade. The local “Umbrellas for Peace” event was sponsored by: the Broadrick Family Foundation, Earth Tech and the Glazer Children’s Museum. The Glazer Children’s Museum, along with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, is a Children’s Board of Hillsborough County.

“News Briefs” Continued from page 4 Leadership Pasco Contributes to NAMI Pasco Every year the new Leadership Pasco class chooses one charitable organization to receive the proceeds of the class project. This year’s “Third Annual Taste of Pasco” raised over $17,500 for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Pasco County. A check was presented July 16 at the NAMI office in Land O’Lakes. The United Way of Pasco also presented a check to NAMI Pasco for $5,000. Repeat the Chic Consignment Shopping Repeat the Chic is a new concept in consignment shopping. It is a series of semi-annual 2–4 day shopping events that feature a large selection of gently used, trendy women’s designer and name-brand clothing, shoes, and accessories. It provides a venue within local communities for women who want to sell and purchase quality designer and brand name apparel at affordable prices. While acting as a liaison between consignors and buyers, Repeat the Chic will orchestrate all the details and logistics of a successful shopping experience.

The next semi-annual event will be at the Verizon Event Center, 8718 Trouble Creek Road in New Port Richey on Wed., Sept. 18, Fri., Sept. 20, and Sat. Sept. 21 (discount day.) In order to get good representation of high-end items, Repeat the Chic will consider a sliding scale proceed split for items with an asking price of over $100. consin to the Trinity area. She says, “I became aware of how many clothes, shoes, and accessories I have in my closet. I had to make some decisions on what to keep and what to get rid of. What do I currently wear, fit into, and like? And what do I do with all of the rest of the items? A friend of mine introduced me to a local company that did consignment events. I particularly loved this idea because all of these clothes that I could not take with me

must have been of some value. After all, I still had clothes with tags attached to them. We do pride ourselves on having a variety of items at a variety of prices so keep the everyday, affordable fashions coming as well.” Different from a consignment shop, Repeat the Chic is a unique shopping experience that is an event among friends and neighbors. It’s a way to stay engaged in fashion without getting yourself into debt. Furthermore, you can participate as a consignor. Consignor registration is now open until September 7th. Visit www.repeatthechic.com to register. Becoming a consignor can put cash in your pocketbook and give you space in your closet. Merchandise of all sizes from women of all ages is welcome. “This is a perfect venue to sell your items of value and earn 60% of the sale. Because this percentage is higher than the split with most traditional consignment boutiques, you are expected to do a little work. You prepare your own merchandise, price it, and tag it. Please note that preparing your items requires some time. Leaving the preparation until the last minute may prevent you from getting a good return on your sales. A $5 registration fee is required and will be deducted from your individual proceeds at the end of the sale.

“Physicians” Continued from page 1 thorough and doesn’t believe in giving medications unless she is sure the patient needs them. She is a wonderful, caring human being.” Another said this about Dr. Shirmo, “Here is a doctor who truly cares about his patients. He has a passion for them and their health. He not only cares about the physical body, but also the person inside. I cannot say enough about this man. I am so incredibly lucky to have found him.” Compassionate Care For All Trinity Family Physicians is committed to caring for patients first and foremost, which is why they accept so many insurances, offer care for those without insurance, and have two major programs of care within their practice. They have a Traditional Practice, which accounts for the majority of their patients who range in age from 7-107, and they have a Concierge Practice, which is designed for patients who want even more one-on-one attention. The Concierge Practice is a totally unique approach to medicine and with all of the changes within

the medical field these days, it’s a welcome approach for patients who are working on a health care goal, who have an illness that requires frequent visits, or patients who want to have additional access to their physician. Patients who enroll in the Concierge Program are often Traditional Program patients first but that is not a requirement. Dr. Shirmo says, “We have both programs at our practice, but our Concierge Practice is gaining in popularity. For less than the price of a frappuccino per day, patients can receive a lot of benefits—one of which is the Presidential Physical, which is the physical that the President of the United States receives.” Adding, “All new patients in the program receive this annually as well as an EKG, a Pulmonary Function test and a full panel of blood work. The Presidential Physical offers a head-to-toe check up that the insurance companies don’t always cover, and these tests can be priceless and even save lives.” Dr. Shirmo adds, “The Concierge Practice is exclusive, meaning we have a limited availability of spots available, and we are looking for people who are truly committed to their health.” For most patients, their tradi-

tional practice is more than sufficient. I have been a part of their traditional practice for years, and I am always able to see one of the doctors when I need to, and most of the time I am able to get in right away, which is a huge benefit when you’re unwell. Their Nurse Practitioner, Kyle Walker, is also a Amir Shirmohammad, MD, MPH & Stephanie Eldridge, great asset to the MD, MPH are the husband and wife team at Trinity practice and she is inFamily Physicians who are committed to provide care credibly professional that makes their patients feel special and helpful.
