Community News Briefs Tampa Conservative Synagogue Mekor Shalom Celebrates Move To New Space Nearly 100 people of all ages filled Mekor Shalom for an event to celebrate new space for Mekor Shalom in Carrollwood. The “Hanukkat Habayit,” Hebrew for dedication of sacred space, was attended by members of the

Tampa Conservative synagogue as well as members of the local community. “It is incredible to think that only about eight months ago we began our congregational path toward a shul premised on two things: connection with one another; and welcoming and

valuing each person for who he or she is, rather than how much they pay in dues,” synagogue Board of Trustees president Chris Shulman said. “These values are felt at every Shabbat service or Holiday Observance, through the warm words and inclusive practices of our Founding Spiritual Leader, Hazzan Jodi Sered-Lever, through the onegs and Kiddush luncheons thoughtfully prepared and provided by congregants, through the warmth of friends gathered together to worship, and through the kind laughter we hear when the kids attend religious school. “These values are also expressed in our adoption of a Voluntary Financial Commitment – the first shul to do so in Tampa Bay – where each person or family gives as they believe they are able to afford.” At the event, Shulman introduced Hillsborough County District 2 Commissioner Victor Crist, who offered inspirational remarks and embraced Tampa’s newest Conservative Jewish congregation as part of the vibrant, growing area. Sered-Lever led a brief but meaningful service characteristic of the warm and inviting environment that has already drawn over 70 households to the shul in under a year. Board Vice President Susan Mar-

low offered the blessing and fulfilled the mitzvah of affixing the mezuzah to the entrance of the sanctuary. Afterward, congregants and guests enjoyed a delicious meal in the atrium while socializing. “This type of environment is exactly why we joined. This is a place where people give what they can. People are here because they want to be; the sense of community is palpable,” said Mekor Shalom member Dr. Amanda Smith, who attended with her husband and two daughters. Shulman added, “This congregation has answered the call. Through financial contributions and in-kind donations of religious items, office equipment and supplies, beautiful works of art, and, most of all, congregants’ time and services, Mekor Shalom is thriving.” For more information about Tampa’s Conservative synagogue Mekor Shalom, please visit www.mekorshalom.org or call 813963-1818.

Magic Is Alive and Well at The Magic Emporium – Carrollwood’s “Best Kept Secret” By Deborah Bostock-Kelley As you open the glass and brown metal door, all the cynicism of adulthood is wiped away; you have just returned to the wonderment of childhood. For this generation of children, it’s like Harry Potter discovering Diagon Alley in the middle of a quaint Muggle neighborhood. In the far right corner of an unassuming shopping complex is a secret world filled with vintage card tricks and modern-day illusions. The shelves are lined with guides, memorabilia and novelty items. This is no ordinary shop, but a special meeting place where amateurs and professionals, young and young at heart, can purchase tricks and props and meet monthly to socialize and discuss magic. Since opening its brick and mortar location at 4429 Gunn Highway, The Magic Emporium has become a Mecca for magicians locally, throughout the United States and around the world.

8

JUNE 2014

“I’ve been in the business about 10 years,” says founder Gary Barker. “We opened the shop in November 2009. Before that we were exclusively online and at magic conventions.” At the age of 8, Barker had his first introduction to magic when magician and ventriloquist Mark Wade performed at his elementary school. “I bugged my parents to take me to the library to get a book on magic and have never looked back,” he explains. Barker performs at corporate events, private parties and churches, and does a lot of charity work. He opened The Magic Emporium to give the public much more than a retail shop, but the full magic experience from a bygone era. “I have a passion for magic, but I have a passion for the experience that you get from a brick and mortar that you cannot get online,” says Gary. “I love the Internet and technology, but there is something intrinsically beautiful about doing magic and learning face-to-face. You can only get that ex-

perience in a real shop.” From beginners in preschool, elementary and high school to unconventional tattooed twentysomething’s to senior citizens honing a lifetime craft, in his shop Gary has seen the style evolution of magic, from illusionist David Copperfield to street shock magicians like Criss Angel and David Blaine. Gary says, “I personally believe what’s good for magic is good for all of us. From the different styles of performing, huge illusions to shock magic, there is a place for all of that. Magic – for most of us in the arts – is kind of a culmination of all art forms – theatre, drama and pantomime, music. It a culmination of all performing arts melting together as one.” Gary believes that even today’s youth, with technology at their fingertips, still appreciate a good magic performance. And longtime magicians Rudy Hernandez and Dick Johnson “The Old Pro”, who were meeting at the Magic Emporium for the monthly

Founder Gary Barker Tampa Magic Club, Warren Hamilton International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.) Ring 175, agree with Gary. “I’ve been a magician all of my life,” says Johnson, who regularly performs at holiday shows, especially during Halloween. “I think if the kids sit

Live entertainment is still a good thing. I enjoy what I call apparatus magic – with the birds and a rabbit; I used to have a girl doing illusions with me.” Hernandez, who has been performing for 40 years, explains, “The kids today are learning magic on YouTube and away from other magicians. When I was learning, the only way you could learn was from other magicians and going to a group like this and actually having social contact. Magic is secondary to the entertainment. Magic is a tool and entertainment is the show. It’s good to have the social interaction.”

“The Masters of Magic” Beginning 7 p.m. on June 1 and repeating each Sunday through August 31, the Magic Emporium will present “The Masters of Magic.” For just $10, families can enjoy an evening of magic and other varieties of entertainment. “We will have quality, professional magicians coming in, with different magicians each week to perform for this family-friendly event; hopefully it will spark some interest in the art of magic,” says Gary.

Kid’s Club

hosts a Kids Club called the Society of Young Magicians the second Saturday of each month, with its youngest regular magician with the stage-name “The Amazing John John (Humphries) having started at just 4 years old. Gary says, “At first I was bit skeptical about how engaged someone that young could become, but surprisingly over the last year he has grown, honed his skills and done a really fabulous job at learning both the tricks and how to present them well. It’s exciting to see kids especially that young really get something out of this experience.”

The Magic Emporium also

AbraCAMPdabra Summer Camp In addition to a monthly club, young budding magicians, ages 7 to seventeen, can practice their skills in The Magic Emporium’s summer camp, AbraCAMPdabra on June 2327, July 21-25 and August 11-15. “It’s a focused, concentrated camp centered on magic,” says Gary. “We teach them a wide range of magic, performance techniques and showmanship and we also have a special day that we teach them balloon sculpting. The camp culminates with an evening show where the children perform the magic they learned for

family and friends.” For $150 per week, campers receive a camp tee shirt, certificate of completion and a magic/balloon kit. In his five years at his Gunn Highway location, Gary has also discovered the magic is being utilized by non-magicians in unique and innovative ways. He says, “We get a lot of educators who come in and ask for magic they can use to engage their students and use as teaching tools. We have several math and science teachers who come in frequently to get magic tricks like optical illusions that they can use to reinforce what they are teaching in their classrooms.” Several magic and balloon groups, like I.B.M., Gulfcoast chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians, and the Balloon Jam, comprised of full-time and part-time entertainers, hobbyists, and new people simply interested in learning more about the craft, call the Magic Emporium home for their monthly meetings and lectures. “We live in a crazy world and the stresses of life are sometimes heavy,” concludes Gary. “Magic can take you back to that moment of wonder and belief that you had when you were a child when you had hopes and dreams and really believed they could come true. I love that about magic. If I could communicate one thing to Carrollwood it would be that we are the best-kept secret in Tampa Bay! We love magic and our community and we’d love to share that moment of wonder.” The Magic Emporium is located at 4429 Gunn Highway in Tampa. They are open Mon. – Sat. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on magic classes, lectures, shows, meetings, and camps, please call (813) 265 -9263, visit www.TheMagicEmporium.net or Facebook.com/MagicEmporium.

Natural Digestive Health at Westchase Colonics “The Truth About Colon Hydrotherapy” By Katie Thomas Westchase Colonics, recently moving to its new location at 12513 Bassbrook Ln in Tampa, works towards informing the Tampa Bay Area about the importance in cleansing, detoxifying and working towards achieving natural digestive health. Owner Missy Belmonte, licensed colon therapist (CT), has a passion for helping people along their journey in reaching a healthier, more natural state of health through a system that rids the colon of toxic buildup. Westchase Colonics offers the guidance, knowledge and take-charge action necessary in reaching transformative and lifechanging health benefits. Missy’s passion for leading a healthy lifestyle and her full belief in the benefits from cleansing through colon hydrotherapy, stems from her own personal life experiences. When Missy was in her midtwenties she began feeling tired, achy, worn-down and foggy. After missing out on work from debilitating symptoms, Missy pursued a mission to find

the reason behind her illness. She found that she had developed Systemic Yeast Overgrowth called Candida, due to excess amounts of sugar and yeast and/or overuse of antibiotics, and according to www.candidaclinic.org, “Systemic Candida overgrowth has become a virtual epidemic, affecting millions of people.” Once Missy realized that she needed to take charge of her body, she did just that; a change from her normal diet to a healthier, more wholesome regimen reduced Missy’s Systemic Candida symptoms by 80% within 8 weeks. Missy says, “Growing up in California, I was always aware of natural health and lifestyles, but it wasn’t until I became very sick and healed many of my personal ailments that I decided to go back to school. When I was able to heal myself I knew that I really wanted to teach others.” At 27, Missy signed up to attend Nutrition School in Napa Valley and soon after, moved to Florida where while working at Whole Foods in the Nutrition Department, Missy met her

role model, Brenda Watson, the proprietor of cleansing products called ReNew Life. “I found that many people were in search of colon cleanses to rid themselves of toxins and heavy metal buildup,” says Missy. “From GMOs to the overWestchase Colonics is professional and serene use of antibiotics, to very little nutrients in our soil, we are pursue becoming a colon hydrotherabeing assaulted daily with chemicals in pist to help people feel better in the everything. sauna session and the experience was wonderful. My body was relaxed and my mind found peace; you will love the sauna treatment, which allows you to have complete “me” time. What makes the infrared thermal system unique? Infrared radiant energy releases out of panels within the steamfree sauna and penetrate the body’s tissues up to two inches deep; you are literally heated up from the inside. The energy output from the sauna is tuned to correspond with our body’s natural radiant energy and induces 2-3 times more sweat output than a traditional sauna. Missy compares her infrared system to a “medical sweat,” clearing toxins out of the body through the release of a heavy sweat session. The sauna will completely relax you and is a great purification tool before your colonic session. After my sauna treatment, my skin glowed for days; the sauna is an excellent purifier and increases blood circulation – what a wonderful gift! During your sauna treatment you will be in a clean towel, receive water with electrolytes and once you have completely relaxed and sweat out toxins, you will wrap yourself in a new clean, fresh towel and head to the colonic room for further cleansing treatment. Missy says, “We all need to cleanse and be aware of importance of elimination. Here at Westchase Colonics it feels like coming to an Internal Body Cleansing Spa versus a clinic. I want my guests to feel great when they leave here…refreshed, energetic, yet relaxed and definitely lighter!” The colon hydrotherapy session lasts about 45 minutes and the final 10 to 15 minutes is spent in the bathroom to eliminate any excess water as you replenish your system with a delicious dairy-free, electrolyte and probiotic infused beverage. “Seeing someone transform from feeling ill, lethargic and depressed to complete vigor, lightness and vitality is very rewarding,” says Missy. “I understand what it feels like before and after a healthy detox – helping people reach this healthier, lighter feeling is the reason I love, love, love what I do!” The machine used for your closed system colonic treatment is a class two medical device that utilizes gentle pressurized water to clear out the colon from toxins and buildup. The pressurized water works to exercise the colon muscles, which also may unravel any twisting

of the colon that may be present and ultimately help to retrain the bowel. All fecal matter within the bowel is toxic. Other problems occur when the excess matter seeps through the colon wall and into other areas of the body. Colon hydrotherapy clears out that excess toxic waste and gives overall improvement to bowel muscles. Three sessions within a 10-day time frame are usually needed to clear the bowel completely. Some may require more sessions, due to many years of medication use and overall poor health that contributes to years of constipation. Missy covers every detail of the program. She even helps you plan a colon-clogging-free diet. Missy says, I am going to be 45 this summer and I feel much healthier and energetic than in my 20s, since I’ve been aware of the importance of healthy cleansing over the last 15 years.” Missy detoxes about twice a year using the same colonic hydrotherapy treatment and protocol her patients receive. If you are looking to improve your overall wellbeing, health and energy, you will be greatly satisfied with the upscale purifying program at Westchase Colonics. Janet from the Westchase area says, “I was nervous at the thought of having a colonic but Missy was so helpful and reassuring. I’m so thankful I can go to a place where I really feel right at home.” Missy’s dedication to helping people take charge of their health is inspirational. She holds seminars at her office consistently in order to teach people how to better their lives through natural digestive health and detox, and she lectures throughout the Tampa Bay Area from health stores to chiropractic offices to networking events. Clients are constantly learning while visiting Westchase Colonics through literature and discussion, which offers unbeatable prices for the treatment and learning experience you receive. The professionalism, the beautiful Far Infrared Cedar Full Body Sauna treatment and colonic therapy will have you feeling youthful, clean, light on your feet and holistically happy. Deciphering The Code: How To Read Nutrition Labels Let’s be honest, we have all stared at nutrition labels blankly trying to understand what in the world is really going on. It can be confusing and frustrating, but there are some easy ways to develop a better understanding. The following tips will help you crack the code of nutrition labels so that you can make educated, health driven choices while grocery shopping! 1. Ignore the front of the package. Products use phrases like “Heart healthy!” “Fat free!” and “Low sodium!” on the front of the label entice you to purchase them, but often these claims prove to be less than accurate when you look at the nutritional information. If you take nothing else away from this article, remember this number one tip! 2. Start with the serving size. All packaged food labels are required to show the serving size of an item. It may be in grams, ounces, cups, etc, but it has to be there, and the servings sizes of the package will also vary. If you look on a box of whole grain cereal versus one of its more sugary

14

JUNE 2014

counterparts, you will often find they use different servings sizes. 3. Understanding “calories from fat.” For many of us we gloss over the “calories from fat” section of the label, but it’s hugely important. For instance, a jar of coconut oil shows it has about 120 calories per tablespoon. It also states there are 120 calories from fat per serving. What does that mean? It means oil is 100% fat. On the other hand, a piece of bread that has 80 calories per slice and 5 calories from fat makes it 16% fat. Understanding this difference will go a long way in your journey of choosing healthy foods! 4. Look at the “total fat.” Additionally, making sure your foods are low in saturated fat (no more than 7% of your intake) and trans-fat free is important. According to the USDA, average men and women should get no more than 20-30% of their calories from fat, so keep this number in check to encourage overall, lasting health. Hidden Fat Alert! Be sure to review “fat free” items too. Companies can label a product “fat free” if it con-

tains less than .5g fat per serving. So in some products, such as cooking sprays, you will see that the serving size is so small that it can carry the “fat free” label, when it is really 100% fat, just like liquid oils. 5. Check the sodium. The USDA recommends that the public take in less than 2,400mg of sodium per day, and in some cases even less than 1,500mg. Currently the average American is taking in over 4,000mg, which is associated with high blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues. By choosing foods with a 1 calorie to 1 milligram sodium ratio or less, you can be sure to stay below these recommended numbers. 6. Read the ingredients. As a general rule you probably shouldn’t eat something with ingredients you can’t pronounce. Keeping foods in their whole, unprocessed form is a great way to make sure you’re sticking with a healthy plan. Be sure to take these tips with you the next time you’re grocery shopping to check your favorite “health” foods and see: Do they re-

Pet Health When we think of health for ourselves we list eating right, exercise, weight control, mental stimulation and regular early detection or well care visits with our physician. It really isn’t different creating a plan to keep your pet healthy. For your pet it is important to feed the correct type and amount of food and avoid inappropriate or excessive treats. Appropriate preventative care, vaccinations and medications should be tailored to your pet’s needs. Pets should have an exercise plan that works for their age and breed and your time constraints. Planning regular visits with your veterinarian can help you make the best health plan to extend the life of your pet. Choosing a pet food can be more difficult than you think. There are thousands of commercial pet foods available. Visit our website, plantationpetvet.com, to read about choosing an appropriate pet food. It is important to read ingredient labels, consult with your veterinarian and stick with one food. Animals do best with consistency. The vast majority of pets I see with diarrhea have experienced a recent diet change. Even a planned

change in diet should occur very gradually over a course of 7days to avoid gastrointestinal upset. Taking your pet to the veterinarian for an “annual” visit can be a daunting task. Owners worry about transporting their pet, what will be recommended and what it will cost. Veterinary sevices should be based on your pets breed, age and lifestyle. Vaccinations especially should be based on your pet’s daily life. Your pets “personal” information should also be used to determine the type of heartworm and flea prevention that is dispensed. Many pets in this area of Florida will need a product that includes tick prevention. Vaccines, especially a complete series for your kitten and puppy, and monthly heartworm, flea and tick prevention medication are the cornerstone of a healthy pet. Most owners do not realize that their dog and cat’s monthly heartworm prevention also protects them from intestinal parasites. Intestinal parasites like roundworms, hookworms and whipworms can cause diarrhea, weight loss and other less obvious signs of illness. Some of these intestinal parasites are “zoonotic” or contagious to humans, especially to very old, very young and immunosup-

pressed individuals. After a comprehensive physical exam, early detection blood work, urinalysis and possibly a dental cleaning will be suggested. We have found these tests and procedures can help us prevent or slow the progression of issues like heart, kidney and liver disease. When detected and treated early, these conditions respond the most favorably to treatment. A healthy pet needs exercise, just like in humans. The most difficult part of exercise, for most people, is making the time to incorporate it into our pet’s daily routine. It helps our dogs and cats with obesity prevention, joint health and mental health. You will find that most dogs love exercise and behave better when they can get out of the house and interact with others. Cats can be given food or treat puzzles, trained to chase a toy or laser pointer and given cat trees or other areas to climb and enhance their environment with vertical challenges.

Your furry companion’s long term health starts with a once or twice yearly physical and discussion with your veterinarian. Vaccines alone are not the basis of health. You and your pet require the same type of personalized care. Find a veterinarian who will examine your furry family member and discuss issues like diet, exercise, and preventative laboratory screenings and needed dental or surgical procedures. Your pet ages much quicker than you do and recommendations may change frequently. You are the key to keeping your pet healthy because you feed, walk, play, clean up after and most likely sleep with your pets on a daily basis.

Most of the products are made in the U.S.A. and many of the houses and feeders are made from recycled materials. “Some bird foods from other places include fillers that the birds won’t really eat,” says Greg. “Every ingredient in our bird food at Wild Birds Unlimited is a seed or grain that birds love to eat. We make sure that our food is suited for this area and that it will attract the birds you want to see. Our food is always fresh and it comes from farms that do not use insecticides.” Greg says that many people come into the store curious about what is inside and later become very passionate about attracting birds to their yard.

He says, “Many of our customers have been with us since we opened 17 years ago. We have many people who came in when their children were babies and now those teenagers are still interested in identifying birds and have become our customers as well. Bird watching is a great way to get children interested in nature.” In addition to a wide variety of beautiful bird feeders, houses, nesting boxes, and artistic birdbaths, Wild Birds Unlimited carries field guides to help you identify the birds you will see and binoculars so you can see them from far away. From the first bite you will see just why in the past year at this location EVOS has quickly become one of Carrollwood’s favorite restaurants. “We are so thrilled for this opportunity to be a part of the Carrollwood market and look forward to meeting all the fantastic people in this community,” says Carrollwood Franchise owner Anita Rubino. Whether it be through their school lunch program, their summer lunch program or the numerous fundraisers and charities they have taken part in, EVOS has definitely done their fair share of giving back to the community. “The feel great ideas go way beyond the food. Art from the Heart! Michelle and Sharon were artists long before they decided to open their first location, but intrigued by the company’s unique approach, they went to a meet-and-greet in Louisiana where the Painting with a Twist franchise was born, and found “their people”; which for an artist is kind of like coming home to family after a long journey abroad! The Painting with a Twist concept is one that promotes joy, fun and a great time – maybe that’s why Painting with a Twist was voted the #1

Paint & Sip Franchise by Entrepreneur Magazine. It’s the ideal place to join a friend (or twenty) for an unforgettable time, and of course everyone gets to take their paintings home! What’s more, you can BYOB (beer, wine, cake!), and in the span of a couple of hours learn that you are a fabulous “artiste”, all while laughing, playing and making memories! Sharon says, “Anybody can do this, and what makes us unique is that we are about the fun factor. You don’t need to be an artist! It’s about fun art, not fine art!”

Upon graduation, Dr. DeWeese returned to the Carrollwood area, working at a local office until opening her own practice in 2007. Dr. DeWeese is accompanied by her caring team of professionals, including dental hygienists Lucy, Heather, and Lauren, dental assistant Melissa, office manager Amanda and front desk managers Jessica and Diana.
