From The Editor Matt Selby

For me, the beginning of the New Year signifies a time for hope, inspiring you to make changes or do things differently. It can be an exciting time, filled with enthusiasm and anticipation, as we think about our potential for the upcoming year. It is a time of reflection – honoring what has happened, what is currently happening, and what is yet to come. Celebrating milestones in our life such as the New Year allows us to contemplate our lives in a way we often don’t do. Constantly moving through life on autopilot, it is easy to get caught in the daily grind, dragging along week by week with our routines and

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

schedules. The New Year is a break in this pattern. It is both an ending and a beginning. It is an opportunity to stop, reflect, and start again. As we move into this next chapter of life, it is important to think about what we accomplished in 2016. A lot can happen in the span of a year, and I'm sure for most of us 2016 was filled with many wonderful experiences, and challenging ones as well. Take a moment to look back upon the beautiful memories you created this past year. I'm sure if you think about it, there were many. Too often, memories are forgotten and as we get caught up in our routines we lose sight of what is

truly important to us and forget about just how lucky we are. Also – just as important – take some time to reflect on what didn't go so well, as it is only by acknowledging these hardships that we are able to let go of the past and move forward into the future. The challenges we have faced give us strength and courage, and in some way or another have helped shape us into who we are today. What is your favorite memory from 2016? I would love to hear about it! Please submit all entries, along with a picture of you and your family, by mail to the Tampa Bay News office, 220 S Safford Ave., Tarpon Springs, Fl 34689, email at matt@nnlflorida.com or by fax at (727) 942-2432. We will randomly select a few entries to be featured in our next month’s publication. As we look towards the future, embrace it with an open heart. Honor your past, cherish the beautiful memories, and be willing to let the challenging times go. In the words of Brad Paisley, “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one!”

You Had Me at Cannoli! Come on out to LIADO’s 13th Annual San Gennaro Festa on February 18th & 19th! By Julie Kanehl Let’s be honest here, it’s all about the food. I’m not talking about just any food; I’m talking about Italian food. LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is jam packed with all of the wonderful Italian delights that you know, love and long for. Want to enjoy all of those favorites in one place? Then it’s safe to say that you should probably mark your calendar for LIADO’s 13th Annual San Gennaro Festa. Your first stop will want to be at LIADO’s La Cucina, where you’ll enjoy olives, cheese, bread, antipasti, tortellini salad, bruschetta, cannoli, pizzelles and wine. There will also be meatballs, sausage and peppers, zeppoles, pizzelles, and other mouthwatering Italian creations! This delicious event, centered on Italian heritage, is part street fair, part culinary treat, and part dance party! Of course, they’ll let you in, even if you can’t dance the Tarantella! Guests can

6

expect to enjoy live music and entertainment by amazing bands including The Black Honkeys, which has quite a local following, and Joey Dee and the Starliters of “ Peppermint Twist” fame. Dance, Sing & Eat Italian-Style! It’s Festa Time! Held on Saturday and Sunday, the 18th and 19th of February at the

Safety Harbor Marina, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is a hearty nod to the Feast of San Gennaro, which brings over a million people to New York’s Little Italy each year. The entire Festa centers around San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, Italy who was martyred for his faith. Italians who

first came to this country, gathered together to celebrate, pray, and party in his name. And that celebration continues every year in many corners of the world. Luckily for us, we can simply join the Italians and Italianenthusiasts from all over the world who head on down to Safety Harbor,

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

which is celebrating its 100th year, to take part in the festivities and support a few great causes at the same time. More than just food that is delicioso, if that’s even possible, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is a charitable event, with 100% of net proceeds benefiting local charities such as The Alzheimer’s Association of Florida (Gulf Coast Chapter), Children’s Cancer Center, Children’s Cancer Research Group at USF, Autism Speaks, The Safety Harbor Public Library, and many others. Additionally, through their scholarship program, LIADO has awarded more than $140,000 to deserving students who are dedicated to furthering their education. In addition to the delectable food and the upbeat entertainment, the San Gennaro Festa will offer a museum that features highlights from Italian heritage, information about

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

supporting and joining LIADO, and the opportunity to meet some of the amazing ladies who have worked so hard to put this exciting event together. So, who is this amazing organization that organizes a street fair that would make a saint proud? LIADO, The Italian-American Women of Today (Le Italo-Americane di Oggi), is a local nonprofit 501(c) 3 group of women who have a simple but powerful goal to preserve the Italian heritage and to pass it down to the younger generations, while giving charitably to the community and to the world around them. Of course, they have a whole lot of fun in the meantime. When they aren’t planning a Festa and cooking for thousands, they share recipes, camaraderie, friendship, and a love of the cultural and family history that binds them all together.

Become a Part of the Excitement, the Tradition and the Community by Joining LIADO! LIADO, which began in 1993 with just a few members, is the only 100-percent Italian women’s organization of its kind in Florida. Offering two meeting places to accommodate its members, one in Safety Harbor and the other in New Port Richey, LIADO balances fun and friendship with a clear focus on education and cultural preservation. Meeting monthly to discuss a variety of topics that range from cooking demonstrations, to genealogy research, and the viewing of historical documentaries, when you join LIADO, you’ll be welcomed like family. If you’re an Italian-American who would love to know more about your culture, and make a few dozen friends at the same time, join LIADO, for the women there do far more than create a Festa, they share their hearts

of gold with the community. In the meantime, make your plans now to come to LIADO’S San Gennaro Festa on February 18th and 19th in Safety Harbor! Admission is only $6 per person, and children 12 and under are free! So, bring some cash for the cannoli, because it’s time to party Italian-style! The 13th Annual San Gennaro Festa will be held on Saturday, February 18th from 12-10 p.m., and Sunday February 19th from 11:30 a.m.–7 p.m. at the Safety Harbor Marina, at 110 Veteran’s Memorial Lane. Children 12 and under are free, and tickets for adults are just $6. All for a great cause, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa will be held rain or shine! Trinity Family Physicians Recognizes Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award Winner Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached By Julie Kanehl Local physicians, Stephanie Eldridge, MD and Amir Shirmohammad, MD are a husband and wife team who started Trinity Family Physicians many years ago with the sole purpose of making a difference in the lives of the families they treated. Trinity Family Physicians is now a thriving and busy practice that hundreds of families turn to when they need medical care. Growing up here and now raising their own family here, the doctors at Trinity Family Physicians are heavily involved in the community, and they wanted to create a way to recognize local individuals who make a positive impact on the Tampa Bay Area, so they developed the Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award. Trinity Family Physicians proudly announces that the next Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award winner is Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached, a charity in every sense of the word. No Strings Attached is a completely

12

JANUARY 2017

non-profit organization that gives to those in need on Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings without receiving a single thing in return, hence the name, No Strings Attached. And The Winner Is: Andre Kirwan of No Strings Attached Andre Kirwan, MBA, and Vice President of The Bank of Tampa is considered a Superman by many, but he’d probably describe himself more as a Clark Kent, or even more likely, as just “Pastor Kirwan.” A Youth Pastor at MorningStar Church, Kirwan is humble, giving, inspiring and sincere. In his spare time, he coaches football at Berkeley Prep, is President of the Warrick Dunn Foundation, and of course, he is 100 percent devoted to No Strings Attached, which collects and donates thousands of items to homeless people on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day. Every year, No Strings Attached donates things that people in our community truly need: Socks, coats, clothes, shoes, underpants, and prayer – a lot of prayer.

Andre Kirwan helps to distribute clothing to those in need through No Strings Attached charity Kirwan says, “Family is first for me. My brother, sister, mom and dad paved the way for me,” He adds, “God has wired me to realize that it’s

not about me. Instead, I want to leave a legacy of the heart, and I try to leave everything I touch a little bit better.” When interviewing Kirwan for

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

this article, he deflected any praise toward God and to his parents, who worked hard and set an example for him. His father worked in the train and airline food service industry to put himself through medical school, and his mother worked as a nurse. Together they worked hard to provide for their family, and they were able to put Kirwan into private school at Academy of Holy Names in Tampa, then Jesuit High School, and eventually Stanford University. Originally intending to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a doctor, Kirwan found himself heavily recruited to play football, which he did professionally in the Canadian Football League for eight years. After he retired from football, he went into banking as a way of helping people. He recently earned his MBA from USF, and is deserving of this award for his true dedication and commitment to others. No Strings Attached Truly Makes a Difference in Tampa Bay No Strings Attached was born nearly a decade ago, when Kirwan woke up overcome by the realization that he had blessings in spades that many others didn’t have. That No-

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

vember morning, he received a calling to give to others what many took for granted, so he emptied his closets, called his friends and asked them to do the same. His vision didn’t involve money; it involved actually getting out there into the community and giving – pure and simple. “I realized that we were forgetting traditional values. We live among so much surplus,” says Kirwan. “So, I decided to put my time where my mouth is, and spend time with these people in their circumstances, roll up my sleeves and look these people in the eye, sit down and listen to them, then give them what I can.” Together with his network of friends and family through the many organizations that he worked with, No Strings Attached began to make a difference in the community. Kirwan talks of hugs he received from people who were down on their luck, people who hadn’t had a clean shirt, or even a clean pair of underwear for so long. These are the things that we take for granted; yet, there are people in our community who view these things as blessings and privileges. Kirwan says, “Last year we surpassed 40,000 items donated between Thanksgiving and Christmas and had over 70 volunteers that helped us serve a record 500 plus recipients on Christmas morning alone! We have come a long way from year one, 2007, when 1,448 items were distributed. Together, we have reached new heights, and every

single item donated matters and will go to good use. No donation amount is too large or too small.” In 2012, Kirwan lost his good friend and right-hand-man in this ministry, Dr. Neal Sayers. Sayers collected donations all-year-round at his office, and his motto was “Go big or go home, baby.” When he brought his motto to No Strings Attached, more and more people benefited. His legacy now lives on through his children, who come out each year to support the homeless. For Kirwan, his loss cuts deep, but through his life and even his passing, more and more people have come out to answer the call of the needy and joined forces with No Strings Attached. Partnering with other ministries in the area, such as Dressed for Success (which helps men and women find clothing suitable for job interviews), Trinity Café, Hyde Park United Methodist, Open Arms, True Holiness Church, Martha Shepley, and The Prince of Peace Ministry, no suitable donation goes to waste. Anything that is left over is donated or kept for the next giveaway. If you would like to support this great organization through your donation of items, resources or simply your time, visit www.nosacares.org and become part of the difference in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge would like to take this opportunity to thank Andre for his hard work and dedication. Trinity Family Physicians

hopes that this story inspires others in our community to pursue their passion and answer their own calling to help make our community better by Making a Difference in Tampa Bay! Trinity Family Physicians has become a dedicated site to drop off clothing and other items for Andre Kirwan and No Strings Attached. Dr. Shirmo says, “We will collect items for the entire month of November and December until we close for the Christmas Holidays. We will continue to do this annually and help Andre and his charity Make a Difference in Tampa Bay!”

Nominate Someone for the Next “Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award” Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award will continue to honor individuals who make a difference. If you know someone who makes a difference in the lives of others in Tampa Bay, Trinity Family Physicians and Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles want to hear from you! trust Tampa Bay Plumbers? One of my best friends in the world, Ryan Penna, plays a paramount role within the company as their production manager. I trust Ryan wholeheartedly, and after hearing him talk so highly about the company he works for, I knew I wouldn’t regret hiring them. As a matter of fact, they will be working on a model home I’m personally building, right here in Tampa. As Mr. Pelky says himself, there’s no job too big or too small. Tampa Bay Plumbers takes care of all the “fun stuff”, like leaky toilets and clogged drains (because your little ones decided to take their toys swimming in things they shouldn’t). Have you ever wondered; “Could I just throw this in the garbage disposal

and get away with it?” to then find out, you definitely shouldn’t have done that? Don’t panic! Tampa Bay Plumbers got you covered! They also repair superficial leaks and bursts all the way through Septic repair and maintenance and trenchless repairs. Ryan Penna and I, sat down to discuss what sets Tampa Bay Plumbers apart from others in the industry. He said, “First off all, we have over 25 years of experience operating locally in Tampa, dating back to before we were Tampa Bay Plumbers. Much of our crew has been a constant over the past decade and our guys have the knowledge and skills that a lot of our competitors simply don’t have. Many plumbing companies operate without the proper licensing, but at Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay Plumbers have the man power and the technology to get any job done! “We have the most technologically advanced plumbing tools and equipment available. We treat every plumbing project like an emergency and never sacrifice quality,” Ryan says. Plumbing emergencies happen when you least expect it, luckily Tampa Bay Plumbers are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to serve all your plumbing needs! “Our 24/7 availability is a huge selling point for us and we never charge an overage rate for Saturday or Sunday work, like many others in our industry under normal circumstances do. We are true ‘workholics’, from our owners all the way down to our entry level positions,” Ryan added.

Backing up what they sell Tampa Bay Plumbers offer a minimum 1-year warranty on all work and they even have a 10-year warranty for some jobs! They also offer a FREE consultation and water quality test to check for hard water, odor or other potentially dangerous toxins. So regardless of your plumbing or septic needs at the moment, make sure you take them up on that! “Our prices match, or in most cases, are lower than any other reputable company in the area and we serve the entire Tampa Bay Area. We don’t lose a customer over price very often and if we do, it’s because the customer goes with an unlicensed contractor,” says Ryan. If Tampa Bay Plumbers can help you, please give them a call at 813-Plumber. Make sure you tell them Matt from Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles sent you and receive $50 off your project, repair or maintenance. Customers such as myself love these guys for a reason! So rest assured you will be in great hands with Tampa Bay Plumbers!

Additionally, Tampa Rejuvenation has a very supportive staff that includes patient coordinators, dietitians, fitness trainers, and wellness coaches who work together to help create individualized programs for each client. Results are gained here because Tampa Rejuvenation has a plan for each patient that starts with a full medical evaluation that includes their health history, family history, lifestyle factors, and all symptoms combined with the results from their blood work to customize a management treatment plan. Tampa Rejuvenation even offers DNA testing to help determine the specific needs of patients at a cellular level. If you have the will, Tampa Rejuvenation will show you the way!

Your Health, Our Passion “Our goal is to help the body stay young and there are different philosophies of what that is, but it is

truly about how you feel,” says Markowitz. “We are looking to prevent metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cancer.” Getting one’s weight under control is not easy, but Tampa Rejuvenation provides the science and support to make it possible. “We provide our patients with DNA testing to identify best diet for their body, the most effective exercises, and to discover the genetically based nutrition their body needs. The DNA test identifies the nutrients that your body isn’t absorbing properly, and also helps to identify eating inhibitions, traits and habits that are genetic.” There are a number of ways in which patients are helped to reach their weight loss goals including HCG injections and appetite suppressants, but the integrative approach really focuses on gut health too, offering patients organic, non-GMO products including probiotics, digestive enzymes, fiber support and supplements, as well as a specific gut health test to determine if Leaky Gut Syndrome is preventing weight loss. One of the biggest culprits in the aging process is the decline of our hormones and this effects much more than your weight, energy level and sex drive – though improvements in those three areas are significant for Tampa Rejuvenation’s patients who benefit from bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. “One of the first things people notice is that their quality of sleep improves immediately,” says Markowitz. “We can’t completely defy aging — but we can minimize the unwanted effects of the aging process,” says Board Certified Physician, Dr. Johanna deVryer. Tampa Rejuvenation gives its patients the answers that their family

physicians might not be providing. “We help men and women struggling with fatigue, weight gain, decreased libido, hot flashes, sleep issues and thyroid issues.” Markowitz adds that 70-80 percent of their patients on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy use pellet therapy. “The pellets are 100% bio-identical (natural), it’s a virtually painless process in which pellets are inserted beneath the skin, to be absorbed naturally over time. Patients are able to go four to six months between treatments. The results are fascinating! I love to see patients within a few weeks come back and tell me they can’t believe they forgot what good felt like,” says Dr. deVryer. Tampa Rejuvenation’s team is comprised of over 50 employees with various medical backgrounds. They treat every patient as an individual with unique needs and concerns. Through the implementation of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, aesthetics, nutrition, and weight loss, Tampa Rejuvenation is showing patients the path to optimal health and wellness.
