Tri County Kiwanis of WNY New Name, Same Vision
In 2017, members of the Chaffee-Sardinia Kiwanis Club contemplated changing its chartered name to broaden its area and to appeal to potential members in the surrounding townships. “A lot of people thought that members could be only from the Chaffee-Sardinia area,” said President Wally Schiener. Schiener is the third generation to be voted president of the Club. His grandfather, Walter Schiener, Sr., was a charter member when it was established more than 50 years ago, and his father Walter (Jake) was president in 1958. In its history, this Kiwanis Club has established two community parks and the volunteer fire department in Chaffee, and built the swimming pool at the Sardinia Town Park. Throughout the year, the Club services the Tri-County area by hosting an Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween Party for the children, as well as a senior citizens’ dinner in December. They have also partnered with the Arcade Area Community Theatre to lend support with their annual holiday production in November. Proceeds from the show help families in need as well as a local foster care program.
In 2015, K.E.A.P. (Kiwanis Emergency Assistance Project) was established to support families that are victims of domestic violence. The most recent endeavor is the partnership of the local school’s “Snackpak for Kids” program; an initiative that provides area children with food and nourishment over the weekends when school breakfast and lunch programs are not available On July 28, 2018, the Kiwanis will be hosting a “My Generation Music Festival” at the former location of Earl’s Restaurant on Route 16 in Chaffee. Four bands will be performing including tribute artists representing Elvis, The Beatles, and the Blues Brothers. A food truck and craft vendors will be on site as well as a classic car and cycle cruise-in. Admission is only $5 per vehicle. Proceeds from the event help finance all of these needed projects throughout the year. As you can see, this “little” Club gets a lot accomplished! New members are always welcome and needed! Nestled in the southwest corner of Wyoming County, the Town was established in 1807 as the Town of China. The name changed to Arcade in 1866. According to the Census Bureau, the town encompasses 47.2 square miles, with Cattaraugus Creek flowing southward through it. At last count, there were 4,184 people, 1,672 households, and 1,131 families residing there. Of those families, 33% had children under the age of 18. The average family size was 3.06, with a median income of $43,077. Arcade also includes the Village of Arcade, and the hamlets of Arcade Center, East Arcade and Punkshire Corners.

Inside the southwest part of the Town, the Village of Arcade includes an area of 2.5 square miles. It is home to over a dozen manufacturers and large businesses who employ thousands of people from all around the area, along with an active community of retail and service businesses. The Village has its own police force, and its own electric department that serves an area stretching from Chaffee to Sandusky. Its 2,000+ residents also enjoy trash pickup, and the services of a sewer, streets & parks and water department.

Arcade Lions Club When it comes to community service and volunteerism, Arcade Lions Club members are always ready and willing to help and, like the Lions Club International, members of the more local Club strive to be “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness,” as Helen Keller described them in 1925. To that end, Lions Clubs throughout the United States and overseas work tirelessly to aid the blind and visually impaired. Arcade Lions Club members include President Mike Miles; First Vice President Jeff Bowen; Treasurer Bob Kutzuba; Secretary Hillary Bowen; Members – Harvey Roll, Pat Gasbill, Wally Loveth, Mark Sandberg, Tim Roll, Gordon Comstock, and Bill Beyer. For the last 15 years, the Arcade Lions Club has participated in the SightFirst Program, providing vision screenings, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease. The Club helps children in need with eyeglasses, and presently the members have set aside $125 for
each child who needs glasses, and partners with Best Vision in Chaffee to do that. The members have provided vision testing to children at Pioneer’s Delevan and Arcade Elementary Schools, Head Start, Early Bird, and to Franklinville Elementary and High School students. The Lions Club also collects used eyeglasses and works in collaboration with Lions SEE Inc. at the Ira Ross Eye Institute in Buffalo. The Club provides insurance coverage for area events including Arcade’s Winterfest, the Tri-County Trout Derby, and the annual Old Timers’ Game. Its members participate in clean-up/pick-ups once, sometimes twice a year. The Arcade Lions Club is always accepting new members. Interested? Please call Jack Wright at 716-982-7580. Arcade Village Café

The restaurant has been in the family for several years, and has stayed true to the small-town family diner feel while still offering a variety of menu items as well as
many non-menu specials. The Pleaces continue to make updates to the building, including new carpet and barstools, among other improvements. Their goal is to provide a family-fun atmosphere and excellent homecooked food for a reasonable price.

They employ six hard-working individuals who have become family to them. Over the past five years, they have become very close with their customers and have created friendships that will never be forgotten. Some of the items that they love there is the slow-roasted Beef on Weck. If you love burgers, stop in for a delicious ½ pound burger, and if you stop in on a Tuesday, you can receive $2 off any of the burgers at MSG. They also do carry local products such as Main Street
Winery’s Blackberry Blast, NY Chips from Marquart Brothers, and their fresh cut fries are made from Phelps potatoes. Whether you are looking for a wing night (Mondays) or Prime Rib (Saturdays at 4 p.m.), you won’t be disappointed. They also have a full-service bar, including a 12-tap draft beer selection and Pint Night and Trivia (Thursdays, 7 p.m.). Enjoy a Fish Fry on Fridays, from broiled to beer-battered. “Love the wine you’re with” is Main Street Winery’s favorite saying. Main Street Winery was established in October of 2014, and they were the first winery to open in Wyoming County. Ken Kibler, owner and operator of the winery, carries a large line of fruity wines, and also carries a good line of semidry to dry wines as well. All wines are made right on the premises, and they have a tasting bar for customers to sample. Their hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday. The winery will also open by appointment. On Saturdays and Sundays the Kiblers are at the East Aurora Auction & Expo Center Flea Market/ Farmers Market doing wine tastings, and selling their wine, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Stop in and see what the winery has going on.

The company went to full-time operations in 1972 with its first employee hired in 1978. The business has since evolved into a short-line dealer for liquid manure handling equipment, and employs eight individuals. Within the last year, the company has purchased the former Nu-Way building; the process of its renovation will continue in 2018.

With a passion for art in all forms and supporting local artists, a gallery gift shop was added. SW Designs opened at the Main Street location on Dec. 3, 2016, and moved to 24 Liberty St. in Arcade June 1. With over 20 years of experience in the graphics field, SW Designs can do all your graphics needs from T-shirt designs to print media or just digital photo touch ups. “My background as a graphic designer is 23 plus years in the making, working on small logo designs to complete catalog layouts, auto wraps and much more,” Wojciechowski said. Also known as Squirrel, Wojciechowski has close to 10 years experience in tattoos as well as a passion to expand on the type of canvas on which she can express her artistic abilities. With her more than 10 years in the tattoo industry, Wo-
jciechowski’s passion drove her to open her own studio and make any tattoo dream a reality. She has passion and detail to make your lasting tattoo a memory that you can carry forever. Body piercer Mike has 18 years in the medical field as an EMT and paramedic. His knowledge not only of piercing procedures but also of metals makes for a safe and comforting experience. SW Designs promotes the arts in all forms and will continue to work with the community to help the area grow. The biggest recent changes for SW Designs were adding new artists to the studio. New artists include photographers, painters and sculptures. Another change is the addition of a piercer to the studio and apprentice to accommodate more clients. However, the biggest change is relocating to 24 Liberty St., and Wojciechowski owning her very own building that will allow SW Designs to continue to expand the studio, artisan outreach and community projects.

364 Main Street, Arcade • 585-492-1460 Hamilton Ward Jr. and Robert Kutzuba have worked together for more than 30 years. Their law firm, Ward & Kutzuba on Main Street in Arcade, has been built upon their combined experience and genuine fondness for their profession and their community. It was in 1983 when Ray Stapell invited Hamilton Ward to join him in his practice in Arcade and, for a brief time, the names “Stapell & Ward” appeared on the sign out front. Ward still had two years to go to secure his pension from his job with the Court of Claims, and didn’t come out to Arcade immediately. Because Ward was unable to begin private practice right away and Stapell wanted to take advantage of another job opportunity, there was a need to have someone in the Arcade office. “Ham called me and asked if I’d be interested,” said Kutzuba, who had just left the Attorney General’s office and was working from his home. He was definitely interested and they were soon on their way to forming a new and lasting partnership. A new office was opened in the Village of Warsaw,
which is located at 250 N. Main Street, next to Rivellino Realty. This year in 2018, Ham will be retiring at the age of 87. Robert D. The Western New York Town of Sardinia is located in the southeast corner of Erie County. As of the 2010 census, the population of Sardinia was 2,775. Sardinia is approximately 50 square miles, and has three small population centers within its borders – the hamlet of Sardinia, the hamlet of Protection and the hamlet of Chaffee. The modern collision facility has grown to be recognized as one of the premier shops in the Northeast. What started as a small three-car garage, has grown into a 12,000-square-foot facility with a capacity of working on many vehicles, in different departments. Three years ago, an integrated insurance claim center was added to accommodate the many direct repair programs they participate in. The shop has been chosen exclusively to represent most major insurance companies in the area. Insurance claims can be reported and handled in the claim center, eliminating the need for an insurance appraiser. If someone is involved in an accident, they can make one phone call to Sisson’s, and they will process everything, including having Enterprise rental cars on site. Sisson’s have made consistent investments over the years to make sure the technicians are trained and equipped to repair today’s complex vehicles. Recent investments in certification
and equipment have made the facility one of the few shops in WNY capable of properly repairing aluminum vehicles. The shop is also aggressively confronting the many complexities of autonomous features available on today’s vehicles. On the southern border of Wyoming County, the Town of Eagle was established in 1817, and encompasses a total area of 36.5 square miles. The Town of Freedom, in the northeast corner of Cattaraugus County, was founded in 1820 and includes a total area of 40.6 square miles. According to the US Census, a total of 2,493 people live there, with a median household income of $34,654. Freedom includes the hamlets of Fairview, Elton, and Sandusky, along with Crystal Lake, Elton Station, and Camp Scouthaven. Perhaps its most notable resident was Daniel F. Bakeman, the last surviving veteran of the American Revolutionary War, and party to the longest marriage on record. He and his wife, the former Susan Brewer, were married 91 years and 12 days. Both died at over 100 years of age.

Considered one of the “southtowns,” Holland is located in the southeastern part of Erie County. Its name is derived from the Holland Land Company, original title-holder to most of WNY. First settled in 1807, it was originally known as Humphrey Valley. With a total area of 35.8 square miles, it includes Route 16, a major north-south highway in NYS. As of the last Census, there were 3,603 people, 1,332 households and 981 families in town. Median household income was $46,708. Holland also includes the hamlets of Dutchtown and Protection, and is the home of the annual Holland Tulip Festival.

Situated in the northeast quadrant of Cattaraugus County, the Town of Machias was first settled around 1813. The Town straddles the border of the Mississippi River Drainage Basin, with waters flowing out of Lime Lake north to Lake Erie, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and eventually the Atlantic Ocean. The waters of Ischua Creek, less than one mile south of Lime Lake, flow south toward the Allegheny River and eventually to the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. The median age in Machias is 40 years old and the town’s population is 2,482 people. Several hamlets are included, like Bakerstand, Bird, Lime Lake, and Machias Junction.

Boasting such notables as Seth M. Gates, former US Congressman from NYS and Jimmy Konstanty, former MLB pitcher and National League MVP, the Town of Sheldon was founded in 1808 and includes 47.4 square miles. Several smaller communities are included in its borders: the hamlets of Dutch Hollow, Frinks Corners, North Sheldon, Persons Corners, Plants Corner, Sheldon, Sheldon Center, Strykersville, Tozier’s Corner and Varysburg. According to the last Census, there are over 900 households in Sheldon, with a median household income of $43,232. The median age is 36.

Although it was initially formed for appliance service, a sales department was added after the first year. In 1966, ground was broken for the new showroom at 3909 Main St. in Strykersville. In 1988, the Logel family purchased a three-story historic building in Yorkshire to use as a second lo-

Owners Steve and Melanie Hammond first began as a Biblical Counseling Center 14 years ago in Chaffee. The ministry then expanded to include the services of C.H.O.I.C.E.S. six years ago. In 2015, the ministry moved to their new location in Yorkshire, which increased community services and outreach, where a volunteer staff help the Hammonds in their mission. C.H.O.I.C.E.S. is a non-profit ministry with all of their services offered free of charge. The ministry offers: free pregnancy testing, unplanned pregnancy mentoring, parenting mentoring, adoption support, abortion recovery mentoring, individual and marital biblical counseling, and guidance and answers for life’s tough questions. One of their highlighted services to the community is their Blessing Closet, which provides free diapers, baby clothes, and supplies to those in need. Also, the ministry operates a “Hope House,” which provides a place to live for single women who find themselves in an unplanned pregnancy or related need. A true community service, the ministry also offers “The Refuge,” a teen center with a positive cafe atmosphere where teens can hang out after school. They can play games, participate in mentoring groups, get free tutoring, and enjoy special events.
