INTENTION

My initial intention was to create a photostyle that was mysterious, gloomy and dark. After a few weeks of exploration, I found a fitting photostyle which was dominated by warm oranges and browns. Subtle hinds of clothing and wealth are indicated while alcohol, cigars, money and smoky backgrounds dominate the rest of the composition.

INTENTION

The graphic style adapted for my film festival is heavily reliant on macro shots of money, smoke and cigar ash with angular orange accent that added a sense of asymmetry to the composition. The dotted lines and textures seen on money adds to the textural quality of the photo style. In the beginning, my project took on a very violent and bloody approach and it slowly started resembling the work of Tarantino which wasn’t the right way to approach Scorsese.

Scorsese is not afraid to be provocative, brutal, and utterly violent. BUT,

INTENTION

My type choice are fairly simple. I have restricted them to two condensed sans serif and two slab serifs. The reason behind this decision is that I was going for bold typefaces that had a strong presence.

INTENTION

My initial format was “damaged files from crime scenes”. I slowly realized that the idea was weak, a little too obvious and cliche. Once I established my photostyle and graphic style, I learned that my format needed to be warmer, richer and something that hinted at “mafia”. I narrowed down my material to warm tan tones of leather, wood and brown fabric to give contrast to my deliverable. I took on the dimensions of a cigar box for my dvd packaging, a simple leather wallet for my tickets

INTENTION

I was heavily reliant on my language bucket as it really helped bring to life mafia lingo and terms that are used often in the movies of Scorsese. My advertising, DVD packaging and tickets heavily showcase this bucket. I have based many of my statements and titles on trust, betrayal, family and deception. I used a couple of website for references and re-watched several of his movies to make sure I was using the words appropriately.

INTENTION

By week 4, I had come to a decision that “Never Enough” was the most apt film festival title that linked back to my thread. I wanted something grungy yet bold. I took on a photographic method of logo production. I typeset the title, photographed it and then reworked the image on illustrator. It was a little troublesome as the logo when enlarged looked like a low resolution image. Week 13 was spent reworking and repeating the logo production. The

FINAL POSTER

My poster began taking shape in week 7 after experimenting with several photostyles. Week 7 had all the elements I used for my final poster but it seemed like the background wasn’t appropriate. In week 8 I made big changes and fell into a sepia toned trap. However, this trial and error helped me develop my graphic bucket. By week 12, I finally developed

My catalog took longer to take shape than my other deliverables as my initial format was damaged evidence. It was only until I figured out my photostyle that I was able to make a bold decision on the dimensions of the catalogue. The dimension drastically change from the initial case file size to a little pocket book had could be kept within a jacket.

PROCESS

I leveraged my language bucket for the development of my advertisements. I opted to mock them up in nocturnal settings as criminal activities are associated with the night time. Once I knew what exactly had to appear in my advertisements, establishing layouts wasn’t too difficult as I already had all the ingredients in my buckets to work with.

PROCESS

The business system, especially the envelope and letterhead had to be functional in nature and hence I had to make a coupe of sacrifices. The visiting card provided both the look and feel of my photostyle as well as graphic application of the colors as seen in the catalog.

One of my biggest struggles was controlling the range of color tones in my system. In week 9 my tones were

way too dark and the colors weren’t very cohesive. Once I managed to control them, everything seemed to fall into place.

Week 12 and 13 were the most productive weeks for me. I decided to take on the format of a wooden cigar box for my special edition DVD collection. The Images were the mocks presented on week 14. The box contained 4 DVD booklets for each movie. 4 stained brown envelopes that contained the 4 movies showcased in the film festival.

Getting my colors to print right on the DVD labels was a little bit of a challenge. Figuring out the imagery for the discs were challenging as well as they needed to convey some aspect of the movie while golding true to the photostyle already developed.

I used wix for my first go at the website. Although simple to use, I wasn’t very comfortable using it. I later switched to wordpress which seemed like a better option for the style I had adapted for my design system. I leveraged my format and language buckets for the development of my tickets. My tickets are double sided, one side displays the photostyle while the other took on a more black and white approach. I tried making the tickets emulate money and hence I thought a wallet would be the most appropriate case for my tickets. Rub on transfers will now to be added

I wanted to create a schedule that was not only a schedule but served a functional purpose. Since the film festival is in a bar, I figure why not take advantage of the bar and create a special drinks menu for the event. It came to me that it could work as a coaster too. The first cut of the flying logo was extremely raw. I realized that I focused primarily on smoking and that the logo didn’t tie back completely to my thread. I did however find music that fit the mood of my festival. I also got a better sense of what I really wanted my flying logo to look like. For my final version I would need to make sure that the screen starts and

Experimenting with new software was a little challenge. Once the basics were figured out I was able to figure

The environmental graphics needed to take on a look that was an extension of the design system and held true to the thread. It had to simultaneously enhance the look of the bar in order to actively engage the audience and transport them into a world of crime, desire, money, addiction and vices. Finding a good balance between the textures and colors was one of the

The container was purchased from a vintage leather vendor on Etsy. It seemed perfect for the the whole “Italian mafia” theme, a little classy and Scorsese enough to work. a the tones fit my color scheme perfectly. . One of the biggest challenges I faced throughout the creation of this project was controlling the color and tone of the imagery. Even though I tried experimenting with papers and tried to produce consistent printed material, it seemed a challenge. All in all it was a wonderful learning experience. I managed to push myself and achieve something that I hadn’t
