Old time fun at Hazel M. Kellington Ian Porteous shares musical, multicultural experience with students
By Casper Wehrhahn Neepawa Banner & Press Students at Neepawa’s Hazel M. Kellington (HMK) school walked into, but danced out of, their gymnasium to the tunes of traditional music last week. From Jan. 22 to Jan. 25, HMK was host to presenter and performer Ian Porteous for a series of collaborations with the students and teachers. Porteous is 53 years old, with over 20 years of experience touring Canadian schools, but is new to Manitoba, having moved to Kelwood about a year and a half ago. Here, he formed his own musical school and summer camp known as the Boom Chuck Club, where he teaches old time music with instruments such as fiddle and guitar. Porteous gained his education at the first French immersion school program in Lethbridge, Alberta. All of the teachers at this school were hired from Quebec, and it was his experiences there that influenced his work. “That’s where a lot of the seeds were sown for what you see today,” said Porteous. “Many of the songs and dances today came from my experience in education there.” PHOTO BY CASPER WEHRHAHN Continued on Ian Porteous, of Kelwood, pictured in the gymnasium of Neepawa’s Hazel M. Kellington School. Porteous shared a variety of Page 7 songs and dances with the students and teachers; many of which he learned at French immersion school in Lethbridge, Alberta.
