H

e may be one of the quieter professionals on Tour, but it certainly doesn’t detract from Francesco Molinari’s growing status as one of the major forces in world golf. As the younger member of golf ’s famous Italian brothers, Francesco doesn’t live in the shadows of his elder brother Edoardo. Twice a winner on the European Tour and a member of the European team in the 2010 Ryder Cup, Francesco has over the past two years, in particular, made a meteoric rise through the ranks. Born in Turin, he established his credentials with a solid amateur career. He won the Italian Amateur Stroke Play Championship twice, and was also the winner of the Italian Match Play Championship in 2004. Later that year he turned professional. He earned his playing privileges at the 2004 European Tour Qualifying School, and retained his card that season with a finish of 86th on the Order of Merit. It was a year built around his finishes of tied 14th in the Barclays Scottish Open and tied 6th in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. He set the tone for a memorable 2006 season when he finished 8th in the South African Open, and then broke through with his maiden European Tour victory in the Italian Open in May. With that triumph he became the first Italian winner of the event since Massimo Mannelli in 1980. A share of second in the Omega European Masters that year lifted him to 38th on the Order of Merit at the end of the season. He continued to build on a solid start to his professional career, and in 2008 he showed the level of consistency that has become his trademark as he improved to a finish of 24th on the Race to Dubai rankings that year. In 2009, Francesco broke into the top 50

on the world rankings for the first time. In November that year he teamed up with Edoardo to win the World Cup of Golf in China – the first such title for Italy. The two brothers have proved themselves quite successful as a team, as they also won a crucial half point for Europe in the fourballs of the 2010 Ryder Cup, which Europe won 14½ to 13½. In November 2010, Francesco achieved the biggest victory of his career to date when he beat world number one Lee Westwood by a single stroke to win the WGC-HSBC Championship in Shanghai. He closed with a final round of 67 at the Sheshan Club to finish at 19-under par and claim a wire-to-wire victory. He went on to finish tied sixth in the Dubai World Championship, and ended the season ranked a career high fifth on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai. His 2010 season was also highlighted by a remarkable level of consistency in which he achieved 11 top 10s. He also had to watch as brother Edoardo won both the Scottish Open and Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, while Francesco finished fourth and third respectively. The two brothers do, however, remain fiercely supportive of each other’s careers. This year, Francesco has enjoyed six top 10s on the European Tour, including fifth in the Volvo World Match Play Championship and third in the WGCCadillac Championship. He still appears to be adjusting to Major Championship golf. His best results in the Majors is tied 13th in the 2009 Open Championship, and tied 10th in the PGA Championship that same year. With Edoardo having made his debut in the 2010 Nedbank Golf Challenge, there is no doubt that Francesco will want to keep the family flag flying proudly when he does the same at the Gary Player Country Club this week.

INSTRUCTION

1

This is a good set-up with perfect balance. Notice how Martin’s chin is away from the chest but not so high that his eyes cannot look directly at the ball. Many amateurs overdo the advice of having the ‘chin up at address’. I like the fact that his arms hang outwards from his shoulders and not straight down. This gives him room through impact.

2

He has swept the club away with the large muscles of the shoulders, arms and core of his body – no quick break of the wrists here, which is a common mistake. The club points along the line of his feet indicating that it is moving on the correct path.

1

2

3

The club is nicely on plane here. If the butt of the club pointed towards his toes, it would be too steep, if it pointed to the other side of the ball, it would be too flat. Here it is roughly parallel to where it was at address and that’s always a good indicator.

4

We can see Martin’s chest, which shows that he has turned his shoulders, and we can see his belt buckle, which shows that he has some turn in his hips. In other words, he is allowing the swinging of his arms to be helped by the coiling of his body.

3

4

5

The thing to note here is how perfectly square the club face is. If you were to draw a line along the club face, it would be parallel to the line of his left forearm. That is an excellent reference for assessing if the club face is square and Martin has it spot on here.

6

With a driver, Martin swings the club slightly past parallel at the top. The momentum of the longer club takes him past parallel but that’s not a problem because his right elbow still points towards the ground. Most amateurs have a high right elbow when they swing the club past parallel and that leads to a steep down swing.

5

6

7

This frame shows the change in direction. What amateurs can learn from this is that his lower body has begun to unwind and his arms have dropped down on the same path that they took on the backswing. Note how his left arm is still across his chest and his right elbow is at the side of his body. The biggest fault that I see with amateurs at this stage of the swing is where the shoulders take over, causing the left arm to swing away from the chest with the right elbow moving out in front of the body, resulting in a weak and steep swing path.

8

7

8

Here we can see that the club is approaching on the correct ‘inside-to-square’ path. The hips have started to open up but the shoulders are square and this helps to keep the right elbow close to the right hip. Whenever daylight can be seen between the arms at this stage, with the left arm higher than the right, it shows that the arms are swinging the club on plane. Feet indicate that it is moving on the correct path.

9

Martin’s right shoulder is under his chin and his left hip has cleared ‘up and left’. That ensures that he keeps his angles, and the club can travel down the line towards the target.

10 9

As the right side fires through the shot, his right heel is being pulled off the ground.

10

7

11

The right thigh, shoulder and hip have moved through the ball and the belt buckle faces the target. When a player does this, it allows the body to support the swinging of the arms and that adds power and keeps the arms swinging the club on the correct arc.

12

A perfectly balanced position. Look at how we can see the spikes under Martin’s left foot, proving that the weight has flowed all the way through to the left side. The right foot has pushed the weight onto the left side and now, having finished its work, it rests on the toe. The hands have swung over the left shoulder and his whole body faces the target. This is the mark of a swing that is powerful, on plane and balanced.

11

12

INSTRUCTION

1 2

This is a beautifully balanced set-up with no sign of any tension in the arms or body.

One gets a sense of the club being swept away by the shoulders and arms here with only the faintest hint of wrist action.

1

2

3

The shoulders continue to turn and the hips are starting to assist that turn now. The wrists are also becoming more active, which gets the club head moving on the correct arc. The club head must travel further than anything else, so it needs to move faster than everything else in order to get to the top of the swing at the same time that the arms stop swinging and the body stops turning. The wrists play the role of blending it all together.

4

The left arm has kept the swing radius, while the right arm plays the role of adding power and leverage by folding the elbow downwards and setting the right wrist back on itself.

3

4

5

Martin’s wrists are almost fully cocked and his shoulders have turned behind the ball. One can also see that his hips have aided the turn, which is why his belt buckle points to his right.

6 5

6

Here is a fully coiled, powerful backswing with the weight mostly on the inside of the right foot.

7

As the downswing starts, Martin’s belt buckle no longer points to the right because he has started the downswing with his lower body unwinding towards the target. As he does this, he drops his right elbow down to his side and that keeps the arms on the correct path.

8

Approaching impact we can see that the weight is already on his left side and the left hip has cleared out of the way. Amateurs should take careful note of the ‘lag’ or angle that still remains between the left arm and club shaft. This shows that he still has stored power in his wrists. That power is only unleashed at the ball – very similar to cracking a whip.

7

8

9

The club has been fully released and the forearms have crossed over. That motion of the forearms crossing over is very powerful because it slings the club head at tremendous speed through the ball.

10

Martin doesn’t lift his head, instead he swivels it, with his right eye underneath his left, to watch the ball fly towards the target. This is important as it ensures that he can keep his body angles and stay ‘down’ through the shot.

9

10

11 12

Here it is clear that there has been a full and committed body action with a free and powerful swinging of the arms and club head.

Martin’s right shoulder and right hip are facing towards the target. Look at how his right arm is fully slung around his neck. Just by looking at this picture, one can sense that he has pounded this drive down the middle. This is a swing that combines hand action, body motion and leg movement in a perfect blend of balance and harmony – the swing of a champion.

the best M

uch has been made in recent times of the need for golf courses to evolve (or expand) to cope with the advantages afforded to professional golfers through advances in club and ball technologies. While one hole – the 17th – at the Gary Player Country Club has been completely transformed from its original design, the balance of the course has, but for the addition of a bunker or two and some new back tees, stayed true to its ‘ahead-of-its-time’ design. After three decades of tournament play, this icon of South African golf-course design still demands precision, consistency

and a healthy dose of respect from those who seek to tame it. Knowing when and where to attack and when to be content with the security of par has become the hallmark of recent winners. The par-fives offer great scoring opportunities – especially around the turn – while the balance of the back nine has a number of holes that can literally make or break a title challenge. What’s more, even in the most severe African sun, this golf course is a spectator’s delight, so enjoy its varied terrain, superb condition and the timeless test it presents to these elite players.
