Note: Known for his sensitively portrayed genre scenes, Victor Gilbert achieved high acclaim in his lifetime for his body of work, eventually receiving the distinctive Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur title by the French government in 1897. While he remained a realist throughout his career, he was inevitably influenced by Impressionism which is evident in the bright color palette he utilized to capture his views of domestic simplicity.

In this painting, Gilbert depicts a grandmother, seated and reading aloud to a child who is standing in the middle of a shop. The contrast of the youthful versus older figure imbues the work with a sense of nostalgia and provides an added poignancy. The details of the surroundings are faithfully depicted from the overfilled baskets of fruit, the hares hanging from the ceiling, and the fowl lined atop the cage down to the needles of hay on the floor, kicked to the ground no doubt by the rabbit peeking through the bars of its enclosure.
