Note: The New York City firm of Deming and Bulkley, established by cousins Brazilia Deming and Erastus Bulkley, manufactured high-style Empire furniture that was sought after by the wealthiest of New Yorkers. The firm later expanded to Charleston, South Carolina by opening a retail shop on the affluent King Street, which sold its lavish New York-made furniture alongside interior luxury imports. In 1852, Bulkley went on to partner with Gustav Herter, of the famed Herter Brothers firm.

Featuring extravagant gilt stenciling, a shaped lower plinth, and lobed feet, and the same overall proportions, the pier table offered here relates closely to a Deming and Bulkley example documented by Cynthia Moyer in the article “Finish Conservation on a Deming and Bulkley, circa 1825 New York Classical pier table: An evolution.” Ref.: Cynthia Moyer. “Finish Conservation on a Deming and Bulkley, circa 1825 New York Classical pier table: An evolution.” American Institute for Conservation. www.wag-aic. org/2003/moyer_03.pdf. Note: The elegantly proportioned sécrétaire à abattant shown here is closely related to a distinctive group of Philadelphia desk forms, each surmounted by a small rectangular box and a sloped top. These desks, often attributed to the workshop of Anthony G. Quervelle, also commonly feature columnar stiles and paw feet, as seen on a similar example held in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

For a discussion on this group of secretaries, see Robert C. Smith, “The Furniture of Anthony G. Quervelle,” The Magazine Antiques, January 1974 and Allison Boor, et. al., Philadelphia Empire Furniture, 2006 (present lot illustrated on p. 447).
