135. Leon Richet (French, 1847-1907), “River Path”, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 21 1/4 in. x 31 1/4 in., in a later giltwood frame. $7000/9000 Note: Richet was a longtime resident of Fontainebleau, and was inspired and influenced by the Barbizon School painters active in that area. He was a favorite student of Narcisse Diaz de la Pena (1807-1876) who admired the young man’s deft handling of the play between light and shadow; it was Diaz who initially encouraged Richet to concentrate on plein air painting. Richet employed a rich, vibrant color palette to create a sense of the airy atmosphere of the French countryside, particularly concentrating on the sky as is evidenced in the present lot. His colors were somewhat lighter than those of the older Barbizon painters, and often hint at the Impressionistic. Richet debuted at the Salon of 1869, receiving honorable mention at that exhibition in 1885, and medals in 1888 and 1901. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français. Reference: Benezit.
