Thanks to the NCTC Softball Team for working the Holiday Classic
The North Central Texas College Lady Lions softball team is actively involved in the Cooke County community. During this school year, the Lady Lions have read at local elementary schools, decorated a local rehabilitation center for Halloween, and volunteered at the balloon festival.

History of the Classic Twenty-five years ago, a pair of men had the idea to have a high school basketball tournament at a neutral site that would bring together not only teams from Cooke County, but all around North Texas. Now 25 years later, that tournament is still going strong, and both men are still involved.
The Holiday Classic salutes Sacred Heart High School for being the only school to participate in the tournament all 25 years
Sacred Heart head girls basketball coach Jon LeBrasseur approached Tom Carson, who was then the general manager of KGAF Radio, about the idea of a Cooke County tournament. The two agreed that it was a good idea and quickly Carson went about getting others on board, including Dr. Bud Joyner, who was the president of what was then called Cooke County College. The first tournament was held the last week of December in 1988 at Cooke County College. The name of the college has since changed to North Central Texas College, but the mission of the tournament remains the same – to highlight some exceptional high school student-athletes. Now 25 years later, LeBrasseur will once again be on the sideline when his Tigerettes open play at the tournament and Carson will be broadcasting games for Nortex Communications. Back in 1988, the Gainesville girls and Muenster boys won championship trophies at the inaugural tournament. This year both schools will once again send teams to try and take home the prestigious Commissioners Cup trophy that goes to the tournament champions. Over the years, the tournament has featured some talented players and teams. On the girls side, Gainesville High School and Lindsay High School have both won the tournament four times. Gainesville won the first two tournaments in 1988 and 1989, then took home the first-place trophy again in 1995 and 2011.

For the boys, Callisburg has taken home the top prize more than anyone. The Wildcats have captured the first-place trophy a total of seven times (1993, 1994, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2009). But it’s not just the games that make the tournament special. The 2002 Tigerettes won the championship of the Holiday Classic. In fact, Sacred Heart won the girls title three-straight times from 2001-2003
Back in 1990, a tradition of recognizing the outstanding student-athletes in the tournament was started. The Academic All-Star team includes senior boys and girls who have maintained a three-year high school average of 90 or higher. Each scholar-athlete receives a plaque recognizing him or her for their achievement. Over the past 25 years, schools that have participated in the tournament include Gainesville, Collinsville, Era, Lindsay, Muenster, Sacred Heart, Valley View, Callisburg, Chico, Marietta, Krum, Forestburg, Alvord, Saint Jo, Pilot Point, Nocona, Thackerville, Slidell, Howe, Blue Ridge, Denton, Sam Rayburn, Liberty Christian, Coram Deo Academy, Melissa, and Fort Worth Trinity Valley.
