from thepublishers Adam kissed his first girl the other day. At least, we think it was a kiss. It could have been that show of love he expresses towards the old Linksys router that’s made its way to the floor of the den. Grabbing the router by the antennae like handle bars on a bike, Adam bends forward and applies a thick film of baby sugar on the top of the device. He’ll then take his fingers and scratch the grill. Pick and scratch and pick. It’s almost as good as sucking pickles. A rug is fine on a wood floor but rolled up so that the mesh-like backer is exposed is even better. When Adam’s through with the router, he’ll crawl over to the rug and scratch it. That rolled up rug is near an air vent register. That too, is worth scratching. Once he’s through with that, he will usually come around the corner in time for one of us to grab the colander. It’s got plenty of little holes in it to pick and scratch. We haven’t tried the sifter yet, but we just don’t want to spoil the kid, you know? I took Adam to a real toy store the other day and what did he go home with? The plastic football with the holes in it. There’s a messy craft I remember doing in school where you drape

pieces of glue-dipped yarn around a balloon. Once the strands dry and you pop the balloon, you are left with a hideous nest of stiff yarn that, if you are lucky, resembles a sphere. Adam would love to handle one of those things. That project may be in our near future. We’ll do almost anything to keep his cute little fingers from getting stuck in the mother of all attractions: the shower drain. If Adam were to get his finger stuck in that metal screen, I’m not sure what we’d do. What pretty little girl would kiss him then? Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

Virginia Wine, Part II The following are just a few of the admirable- wines being made locally. Rotunda Red, Lovingstson Winery – I have to admit when Stephanie Puckett first popped into Basic Necessities swishing blonde hair and placing a bottle of Rotunda Red on the counter, I was nervous. But no other winery has surprised me more. South African wine maker, Riaan Rossouw has been around wine since the age of two and his touch is like magic. The Rotunda Red’s motto is “We bleed orange and blue, but we drink red,” a nod to the family’s two generations of UVA alums. As a Virginia alumna myself (even if back then we always lost), I too have raised many a glass while chanting, “Wahoo-Wa.” A blend of Cabernet France, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the taste might remind you of a St-Emilion. Riaan uses all gravity flow methods and primarily makes red wines. My favorite, the beautiful Pinotage with none of the “foxy” notes often characteristic of Pinotage. Wintergreen Winery, Black Rock Chardonnay, 2007 – Virginia wine at its best with this classic, delicious example of pure, well-priced Chardon-

nay. Aging nine months in oak allows for nice butterscotch tones without being over oaky. Bright apple fruit. Pair with cheeses and poultry. Flying Fox, Viognier – A lovely example of Viognier with the hallmark aroma of apricot, peach and pear. Creamy, full mouthfeel; smooth and complex. Pair with Asian cuisine or blue cheese. Quattro 2008, Cardinal Point – Maria Morgan and I instantly took to this unlikely blend of Riesling, Gewürtztraminer, Viognier and Traminette. I say unlikely because it is slightly sweet, the kind of wine I see the wine snobs turning their noses up at and the tourists buying up by the case. But chilled well and served at a picnic with blue cheese on crusty bread, the Quattro is hard to beat. Our area is blessed with two new outstanding vineyards, Pollack and Mountfair. Pollack Rosé – The quality of the Pollack rosé caught me by surprise. Immensely drinkable, look for notes of strawberry and orange. Equally excellent is the Merlot, a perfect balance of fruit and earth, as well as the full-bodied Meritage and a near perfect

Chardonnay. Mountfair, Wooloomooloo – What? That’s Wooloomooloo, a mythical spirit that roams the Blue Ridge Mountains and, depending on how much Wooloomooloo you’ve tippled, also inhabits your brain. A blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet France and Merlot. Nice and full in the mouth with earth tones and soft fruit. I loved the Inaugural, boysenberry and raspberry flavors and undertones of black pepper. Virginia is also making first-rate sparkling wines. A lover of Blanc de Blancs, in particular Salon before it became unaffordable, my favorite Virginia sparkler is hands down Claude Thibaut’s Thibaut Janisson. Originally from Champagne, Claude comes from a fourth generation champagne-making family and has spent over half of his winemaking career in areas other than Champagne making sparkling wine. Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) in style, it’s delicate while still offering complexity. Flavors of melon, citrus and minerals. Good bubbles, refreshing and elegant. Rodes Farm has a history, there’s no negotiating that. But about a year ago, the well-loved, Wintergreen Resort-owned farm’s future was very

up in the air.

Not to worry, the farm, now officially called the Rodes Farm Equestrian Center, LLC., has been heroically saved from the chopping block by a few very dedicated horse-lovers and community members and is now bigger, better and stronger than ever. “It’s exciting,” said Lindsey Osborne, the center’s manger who has been hanging out at Rodes Farm for about 18 years now. “You’ve got a lot of great changes happening.” Lindsey said the main things going on at the farm right now are improvements to the facility. Scott Bendle of Roseland has been working on bringing the barns back to life at the farm. There is a brand new tack room and the old tack room has been transformed into a wash stall. There’s new fencing, a lounge area and a new office in the second floor of the main barn, the white one on the official Rodes Farm property. But all of that isn’t even the best part. “We replaced the hayloft floor,” said Lindsey, excited. “It was fairly scary to walk on ever since I was 10 years old when I first came here – you kinda take life in your hands.” But now, like much of the rest of the barn, it’s brand new. “He’s bringing the barn back to life,” said Lindsey of Scott. “He’s resuscitating it and patching it up and making it safe and useful again.” In addition to fixing up the barn on the Rodes Farm property, the center now has use of what is be-

ing called The Big Red Barn which is on the adjoining property of the Rodes Farm Inn. Kay and David Kaufman, who have owned the Inn for the last five years, have signed a long-term lease with the owners of the property, Wintergreen Resort. “I’ve got a really terrific relationship with WPI,” said Kay. “They have been so incredible in this whole process and very supportive.” In addition to the support of the property’s owner, Kay and David, who do not live in Nelson full-time, have a great support staff running the day to day operations of the farm. Lindsey, who ran the stable during much of the transition period, was a natural fit for the position of manger. Jennifer Stegeman, who recently joined the Rodes Farm community by boarding her horse at the barn, has been named the community outreach manager and Hayley Osborne just finished up a highly successful summer camp in her first few months of being the riding school manager. “Hayley is just a kid magnet, perfect for the camp,” said Kay, who never has to worry about what goes on at the barn when she’s home in Virginia Beach. “They are all really in tune to each other’s skill sets and playing off each other,” she said. “It’s really been a lot of fun assembling a team and putting the plans together.” By taking the farm under her wing, Kay was able to put the Big Red Barn, a historical Nelson County

party venue, to use as a summer camp venue. The white barn will be used primarily for private boarders and the red barn is the official riding school headquarters. “It’s great to have young riders in here… so excited,” said Hayley. “It’s just nice to see young riders excited to be part of something that we’ve been part of for so long.” Hayley and Lindsey have been riding at Rodes Farm for most of their lives, but the farm is really meaningful to almost anyone who’s ever ridden there – no matter how far away they go. Nicola Steffanina, who is currently training in South Carolina with professional horseback riders, trekked back up to the Commonwealth to help Hayley instruct the youngsters. “She came up specifically to teach camp this year,” said Hayley. “For her, it’s really important to spend the time teaching kids to become young riders.” The equestrian center still has ties with Wintergreen and Resort members, as well as people from the Nelson community, are invited to use the facilities. And after a couple years of turmoil, the barn, just as well-loved as ever, but now sparkling and full of life, it looks like Rodes Farm is going to make a full recovery. “It’s going to be a great thing,” said Jennifer. “You’re going to be able to enjoy what we’ve been able to enjoy for so many years here.” NCL

Qualifying for a USDA Rural Housing Loan

Nelson County has so much to offer, and just in case you needed yet another reason to call our area home, here it is. Nelson County is a qualifying rural area within the USDA government insured loan program which helps rural communities by making real estate more affordable. Even though the “everybody buys” approach to lending is a thing of the past and lending practices and standards have become more stringent, there is hope for many cash-poor home purchasers. With a USDA loan, qualifying buyers can buy a home with no money down. Even in this day and time, it is 100% possible to get 100% financing! What does this mean to our area home buyers and sellers? If you are trying to sell your home, there may be someone out there that can now afford it. And as a prospective home purchaser, this may be your “window of opportunity” to get your “foot in the door”! Here are the specifics of the loan program and qualifications:

Advantage; No down payment required, competitive 30 year fixed rates, can finance closing costs, no mortgage insurance, no cash contribution required from borrower, unrestricted gifts with no need to document the source, no maximum loan amount, etc… Requirements; Applicant cannot own another dwelling, must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident or qualified alien, must be of legal capacity, and must use purchase as primary residence. Credit History; Credit history must reflect a willingness to pay debt obligations upon due date. More streamlined process when applicant score is above 620. No minimum credit scores. Income Limits; Applicant must not exceed the moderate income limit established for the area. In Nelson County within a 1-4 person household the annual income cap is $83,750. Qualifying Ratios; Borrower must fall into the allowable debt to income ratio of 29/41. (No more than 29%

of income should go toward housing debt and 41% toward total recurring debt obligation.) Expanded repayment ratios may be permitted with sufficient compensating factors. Loan-To-Value (LTV) and Loan Limit; 100% LTV plus the amount of the guarantee is allowable with acceptable appraisal. There is no loan limit. Property Requirements; A property within a qualifying rural area can be modular or stick-built, as well as resale or new construction, and in all cases must meet USDA standards to include local and state codes. Condos, townhomes, and some new manufactured homes may qualify. Not allowable: in-ground swimming pools, previously occupied manufactured homes, construction draws, furniture and personal property, income producing property, non-essential buildings and land. Closing Costs; There is a guarantee fee of 2% of the final loan amount. Fee can be financed along with other closing costs. There is no cap on seller

concessions. (A purchaser could come to the table with as little as $157 with an appropriately structured purchase contract which includes seller paid closing costs.) Seller Considerations; In order to attract a qualified buyer, you could potentially have a few more hassles or barriers to overcome. However, where you previously had no eligible buyers, you now have the opportunity to get the home sold! Buried in the woods around Schuyler, the acreage adjacent to the house teems with aviaries of birds, cages of raccoons and at least one outhouse-sized room where a handful of orphaned baby skunks were recently finding their scent. Inside the house things calm down a bit - dogs, cats, the usual - until a climb into the loft reveals a room of baby birds clamoring for the dropper with the food in it. The whole thing looks exhausting. But with some part-time and intern help it has evolved beyond being a one-woman band. So for now its manageable. For now. Having reached capacity, there’s going to be - Attinger is hoping by spring - an expansion onto the Miller School campus in western Albemarle County. “It’s getting too big for our house,” Attinger said of the non-profit Rockfish Sanctuary that started hatching 15 years ago when she took on her first orphaned crow. “We can’t go on one more year here ... it’s just too much.” For years the Sanctuary was rarely publicized outside of the word-of-mouth of the game warden and wildliferehab crowd. But in the last five years the center has grown by the hundreds annually, with 2009 likely to become a banner year as Attinger and her crew care for, and release, upwards of 600 animals. Animals from all over Virginia, many of which arrive

on Attinger’s doorstep through a network of volunteer couriers. Unless an animal requires medical attention and needs a trip to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro. Susan Hastings is a retired nurse living in Afton who’s volunteered for the sanctuary over the last three years. “Any help that we can give [the animals] is going to be an overall good thing for the environment,” Hastings said. “Humans are encroaching more and more [on wildlife habitats] ... [there’s] bound to be more accidents, injuries, problems ... fortunately a lot of people find it worth their time to see what can be done to help.” Marina Childs is an Afton native and a rising junior studying wildlife sciences at Virginia Tech. She came to work for Rockfish Sanctuary for the

summer after someone in Blacksburg mentioned it. “I had no idea, I’d never heard of it,” said Childs, one of three interns at Rockfish Sanctuary this summer managing everything from phone calls to hand-feeding baby opossums. “I’ve learned a ton here,” she said. By spring Attinger hopes “here,” in terms of Rockfish Sanctuary, includes a renovated barn at the Miller School. That project is intended to expand in the coming years to include clinical and educational facilities. The sanctuary in Schuyler isn’t set up to accommodate tours, or programs. “[The Miller School] wants) to be identified more and more as a ‘green school,’ and so this is just a perfect marriage between the two of us,” Attinger said. He’ll soon be able to skate closer to home thanks to Skate Nelson, a grassroots organization bringing a skate ramp to the Rockfish Valley Community Center.

Ten-year-old Jeffrey Morris has been skateboarding for almost half his life. He learned the sport from his dad, also named Jeffrey Morris, and quickly became passionate about it. “It was just in my blood,” the rising 5th grader said. “I loved it.” When he started skating, there was nowhere to practice but at his own house. For a special treat, his parents would take him to the skate parks in neighboring counties. Jeffrey did tricks on the porch and the front steps but eventually his parents got fed up with that and came up with a creative solution. “They didn’t like me grinding up and down the deck and stuff,” said Jeffrey. “So they just gave me a ramp.” Jeffrey found a Thrasher video that instructed its viewers how to build ramps and rails out of plywood and they got to work. “Well, I was just pumped up for him,” said the elder Jeffrey. “We would go in the house, look at the video, come back out and put it together.” When her son first started skating like his dad, Jackie Morris was worried for his safety, but she’s finally getting used to the idea as Jeffrey gets better and better. On a recent visit to Staunton’s Gypsy Hill Action Skate Park with his dad, Jeffrey found out there was going to be a contest. The youngster barely qualified for Operation “B” Sting, a teen skateboarding competition, but took home the top prize in his division. “Jeffrey was up there just doing his thing,” said the proud papa of his dedicated son. “He does it every day, he practices every day,” said Jeffrey senior. “We’re proud of him and I just wish we had somewhere to skate close.” And that dream is close to becoming a reality. Tim Gorman of Skate Nelson is working on the first part of a three-stage project that will give Nelson its very own skate park at the Rockfish Valley Community Center. The first stage, which cost nearly $9,000 and dozens of hours of donated time, was to build a large half pipe ramp.

“We raised all the cash and purchased all the wood,” said Tim of his group. “I cut over 220 boards. It’s like building an arc.” The next two stages will be even more expensive and take a few years but will add a plaza for streetstyle skating and finally a concrete bowl. It’ll be a skate-at-your-own-risk park, but there will be rules. Namely, helmets are required, bikes are not allowed and graffiti is strictly prohibited. Tim, who is the vineyard manager and winemaker at Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery, said that in addition to the interest of the teens in the community, there are several adult skaters who have donated time as well as cold cash including the brewmasters at both Devils Backbone and Blue Mountain breweries. “The beverage industry is well represented,” joked Tim.

He doesn’t skate much any more, but he doesn’t think he’ll be able to steer clear of the brand new ramp. “You won’t see me doing anything crazy,” he explained, “but if I’m going to build it, I’m going to ride it at least a little bit.” With a place like the one dreamed up and designed by Skate Nelson, it’s not hard to imagine what kids like Jeffrey Morris, who wants to eventually get sponsored and skate professionally, would be able to accomplish. But first things first. “The idea behind getting the ramp up is to take care of these kids who need somewhere to go.” said Tim. “And 100 percent of this money came from Nelson,” he added. “This is as grassroots as it comes.” NCL

Richard Boyd does not drink coffee. “No actually, I’m allergic to coffee,” he said. “I can’t drink it.” This wouldn’t be anything to think twice about, except Richard and his wife, Nancy Kern, own a coffee shop. “But I love coffee,” she said. “Addicted.” When they put together her love of coffee and his love of whipping up new recipes in the kitchen, they came up with the perfect idea: they decided to open a coffee shop. The longtime dream started as

a farfetched half joke years ago was finally realized about two months ago. Java Depot opened July 3 just outside Nellysford next to the Devils Backbone Brewery. They had the location before the name and since the café is located inside the old Arrington train station, they knew the perfect name would hint at the building’s history. “Actually, it my dentist, Stephen Clark, and his assistant that came up with the name,” said Nancy. “It had to be something with the train station but something with coffee, too.” Richard, an architect, said that

even though he doesn’t drink the stuff, he knows that putting together the perfect cup of Joe can almost be compared to putting together a house. “You have to have the right coffee bean, which I guess you would call the foundation,” he started. Then you have to grind the beans properly using the right, generally expensive, equipment. “And then you have to find a good barista to build it,” he finished. But the coffee worries are left mainly for Nancy, a former lawyer who still holds seminars for attorneys.

To all that have never seen the Pacific Northwest I offer this one word – go! During the summer of my sophomore year at Virginia Tech I did an internship at a primarily conifer nursery in Boring, Oregon called Iseli Nursery. During that summer, I was introduced to some of the most intense members of the Picea (or spruce) family including what I consider to be one of my personal favorites that I have planted just outside my kitchen door – the Montgomery Spruce. This plant has the signature color of intense Carolina/Duke blue to its foliage but in a short and squatty, almost pin-cushion form. The ultimate size would be estimated just around 3-4 feet high and around 6-7 feet wide. When planting, consider the size to be around 3-4 feet wide since it does grow quite slow and would leave a tremendous hole in your garden if you plan on the ultimate size. When prepping the soil for this specimen, keep in mind that it wants good drainage so low lying areas are definitely out of the question. When amending the soil, locate some high grade topsoil and work this into the existing soil before you add your most valued soil amendments including compost, peat moss, gypsum and an organic fertilizer. Mixing all of these thoroughly will ensure you that both drainage and loose rich soil occupy the new strata where you spruce will be located. It should be noted that full sun (or 6 hours of sunlight) is the only area for this plant since any less sunlight results in an undesirable washed out blue-green hue to the plant. My personal favorite is to locate this plant in a garden that is primarily planted with perennials along with some sort of backbone to tie the entire garden

together – that is, one plant that can be found from start to finish in the bed. Boxwood, Liriope, cherry laurel and even heather can adequately fill this necessity. Perennials that I have found to be quite beautiful mixed close to this specimen are coneflower (mostly pink), garden phlox (lean towards the more purple hues), daylilies (green yellows like Green Flutter are really nice), Perovskia, helianthus (bright yellow), butterfly weed (Asclepias) and even creeping phlox or native phlox (lean towards colors that either contrast nicely, like pink, or have the same hues as the blue in the spruce). Shrubs that make a nice statement along side this specimen are pink knockout roses or even another shrub rose that I have recently grown to value in my personal garden called Pink Iceberg (which is a nice combination of rosy pink and white). I even have my favorite hydrangea, Limelight, close by which really adds to the drama since it has both white (which picks up the Pink Iceberg) and a tint of green (which picks up the colors in the Green Flutter daylily). Pruning should not be performed at any time. If you find this guy starting to take over the area, move the perennials to allow for it to continue to grow and thrive. When planting your shrubs close by to this specimen, keep in mind that these are not nearly as easily moved as the perennials so space accordingly. I have had very little issues with this plant regarding disease and insects so don’t count on this being an ‘azalea class’ of shrubs that require attention to just about every insect known to man and garden. Dementia is not a specific disease, but is a collection of symptoms. Memory loss is a symptom of dementia, but forgetting where you put the car keys does not mean that you have dementia. Dementia is diagnosed only when two or more areas of brain functions are affected. Memory loss is the most common symptom of dementia. A person may be able to tell you details of their youth, but unable to remember things that happened only minutes earlier. They may have difficulty performing familiar tasks such as cooking meals, have problems with language or get lost and disoriented. Sometimes they exhibit poor judgment, or have difficulty balancing their checkbook. They may misplace things and not be able to find them. Personality or mood changes may be present. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia, but there are other causes. Some conditions

can cause reversible dementia. These include medication interactions, depression, certain vitamin deficiencies or thyroid disease. Other conditions cause progressive dementia, which mean the symptoms worsen over time. Medications are available for some forms of dementia. They do not halt the disease or reverse existing brain damage, but can improve symptoms and slow the progression of the dementia. Their use may improve quality of life, ease the burden on a caregiver or delay nursing home admission. Dementia is a very sad condition and can cause a tremendous stress on families and caregivers. Pay attention to symptoms such as memory loss and other functional or personality changes. Early diagnosis can allow for early treatment and possibly identification of reversible conditions. Developing Your Healthcare Plan There is much in the media about the possible changes in our health care system. It is hard to determine what the final outcome will be and difficult to know whether it will improve our system or not. Change is always hard even it is a beneficial change. It is the uncertainty of something new and different. The sense I am getting from watching the public’s response is the feeling that the policy making is out of their control. Sure, letters are written and phone calls are made to the President and Congressperson with expressed wishes but the outcome will still be uncertain until the policy is finalized. That is an uncomfortable place to be where we feel we do not have control over our destination – especially when it affects our health. I believe we can do our own part to develop an individual healthcare plan. This is possible because we have the ability to make choices. And it is very scary to rely on only a health insurance policy to take care of us. For those of us who are blessed

and able bodied, we can choose: 1) To eat healthier- reducing intake of sugars, sodas and eating real food instead of prepared packaged foods. My Aunt raised 13 children and she told me she never skimped on food because she knew if the kids ate healthier, they would be healthier and that would save money on doctor visits. Packing a lunch is another way to save money and eat wiser. 2) To make an attempt to exercise. If you have trouble walking, start with exercises in your chair. Seek out professional consultation so a safe program can be developed for you. Just as each sweet treat packs on the weight over the years, each bit of exercise can help reduce your risk for medical ailments. 3) To set an example of your wise choices for the children. Thirty minutes of physical activity a day is recommended. Play with them and make it fun! 4) To get annual physicals and be honest with your physician about how you are doing so your doctor can help you. Manage the symptoms before

Soon after Sandy Etchison’s sister, Peanuts, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time, she signed up for “a little walk thing” in Washington, D.C. Turns out, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure walk is a 60-mile, three-day event with thousands of participants. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation raises money year round for research of and education about breast cancer. “You have to train to walk 60 miles,” Sandy exclaimed from a treadmill as she prepared for the walk. Sandy, who waits tables at Vito’s, and another sister, Karin will walk an average of 20 miles per day for three consecutive days beginning October 9. Sandy, Karin and the thousands of other participants in the Breast Cancer 3-Day are taking donations for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Sandy’s got some creative ways of fundraising. For instance, she spent an entire Saturday on a treadmill in front of Stoney Creek Pharmacy in Nellysford hoping to raise both funds and awareness. One of the reasons she chose that specific locations was in support of Cheryl

Tompkins, the Stoney Creek Pharmacist who was recently diagnosed. Sandy said everyone in the shopping center has been extremely supportive of her efforts. “It’s yours,” she was told. “Whatever you need to do, we’re here for you and we’ll do whatever we have to.” “This community’s fabulous,” said Sandy. One community member in particular is especially supportive. Miriam Etris of Wintergreen is a nineyear survivor of breast cancer and participates each year in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, a 5K race held each June. “I really was totally unaware of any of the outreach programs or the support programs, but once I was diagnosed, it’s almost as if one enters a sisterhood … of people who have been touched by cancer,” said Miriam. “We have an instant support network here.” Peanuts lives more than 4,000 miles away in Alaska, but by participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day and reaching her fundraising goal of $3,000, Peanuts’ sisterhood will be touched by the efforts of her sister across the continent. Wine is great for cooking. A sweet red wine will get rid of a fruit fly problem. Back in the day, wine was used as a healing agent. And everyone knows how great a big glass can be at the end of a long day. But wine soap? You bet. Melissa Staten, who works at Cardinal Point Winery, will tell you that wine – and beer – makes a perfect soap. After the wine is made at Cardinal Point, there is always a bunch of leftover pumice, the seeds and skins of the grapes. “I get giant zip lock baggies full and my whole downstairs fridge is full of pumice,” explained Melissa. “I slowly dehydrate it. It takes several weeks. I do it in my oven on low.” But first she has to fight for it. The bees were there first.

“I go out with my bags and a big plastic shovel and I kind of say a prayer,” she said. “I just say, ‘Look, I just want some of this, please don’t sting me. I’m going to leave more than enough for everyone here.’” After weeks and weeks of drying it, Melissa turns the tried pumice into a really fine powder – about the same texture as espresso. Then she adds wine, local herbs and a 100 percent pure vegetable glycerin soap that she literally grates with a cheese grater. But the most important thing, said Melissa, is that everything is local or fair trade. “In addition to the soap portion, there’s shea nut butter and cocoa butter and coconut oil from a women’s collective in the Congo,” she said. “I use them exclusively.” NCL
