PRIMARY RESEARCH
My area of interest is everyday or casual conversation as I find some of the most spontaneous, exciting and interesting things come from here; when the conversationalists are most relaxed, most themselves and are portraying their character through what they say and how they say it and the devices used to communicate that message and the semantics of this. Verbal dialogue is often listened to or read, but is seldom visually expressed so that it can be watched; I wish to shed light on the everyday as I have been documenting my everyday life since the age of 7 and wish to communicate an aspect of the everyday life through a more expressive medium than writing. This is of much interest to me as I deal with visual communication and there is no visual answer to the question of casual conversation; artists who deal with conversation tend towards narrative based animations. The level at which we overlook everyday conversation is so extreme that when we do stumble upon a recording of it, it feels as though we are eavesdropping on something very private or personal and the trivial aspects become intriguing as we begin to develop extraordinarily accurate ideas of the conversationalists.
PROBLEM Everyday conversation is a part of everyday life, which like it, is often overlooked despite it’s richness and vital functions in creating and maintaining our subjective realities. In everyday conversation, we act out ourselves and negotiate social identity and interpersonal relations motivated by interpersonal needs, who we are, how we relate to others and what we think of how the world is. It is the site of important dimensions of our social identity such as gender, generational location, sexuality, social class membership, ethnicity and subcultural and group affiliations. SOLUTION My intention is to visually represent everyday dialogue through animating the ideas and topics communicated in the conversations I have recorded. This is so that the viewer can appreciate visually the dialogue being spoken by illustrating the words and topics through animation and watch the detours of casual conversation; a spontaneous visual piece of poetry for the potential in dialogue and language we overlook.

STYLE TESTS
I started by recording everyday conversations in everyday situations. At the beginning, I did experience the Hawthorne Effect, where one alters their behaviour for awareness of being monitored, but eventually managed to forget the recording equipment was there.
Initially, I looked at I Met The Walrus by Josh Raskin as I though it was similar to what I wanted to create in creating an animation based on a conversation and came to a conclusion that I wished to opt for a hand drawn heavily illustrative style. To inform more specifically what illustrative style I would aim for, I looked at Kavel Rafferty who places an emphasis on traditional mark making and Zoe More O’Ferrall who does the same thing but with a specific focus on the everyday.

I was also interested in abstract animation and looked mainly at Len Lye. Len Lye’s work and style is dictated by the instances of musical notes and the instrument which it is played on for example, a guitar bend may be graphically represented in the same way. His work is very colourful and allows the viewer to “watch” the audio. Much of his work is achieved by painting on 16mm film directly and other forms of mark making. This approach to animation allowed me to communicate a mood or notion without having to represent figuratively the people involved. Another illustrative animation I looked at was Bob Sabiston’s Snack and Drink where I was inspired by the rotoscoping element which I would later try to do. I was also inspired by the bold colours and pencil lines in Latin American graphic design and would implement these aspects in my work.
I wished to use methods exercised by some of my researched key practitioners of experimental animation and instead of film, used layers of acetate, a light box and paint with washing up liquid to create my own experimental animation with various forms of mark making such as a comb and using different materials such as paper and glitter.

I had created illustrations informed by the styles of my researched illustration practitioners to go with the chosen recording and recorded footage to rotoscope. I liked the footage I had recorded and did not wish to commit myself to hundreds of rotoscoped images if I was not sure it would be included in the final animation. I decided to try and create an experimental film of all that I had collected as I had not yet established a visual style, in hope this would give me ideas which it did, such as the idea of movement through different layers representing the journey or detour of everyday conversation.

I believe I have successfully identified an interesting topic and been able to provide an insightful intriguing answer backed up with well researched information and thorough understanding and study of the subject.

I have been able to experiment with a variety of media which I have not up until this point been able to apply in one situation. I have been able to combine traditional print based methods and mark making with new media to create something old and something new much like my topic; looking at something a lot of us are all familiar with and presenting it in a new way in which we can appreciate it. I have been able to critically evaluate a new subject of my own choice informed by my own motivations and develop the ability of applying New Media to new and obscure subjects to create an innovative answer. I have been given the opportunity of creating a process based piece of work combining traditional elements with New Media to a high standard. I believe I have remained true to my research as it was necessary to be heavily reliant on it to produce a successful subject.

I believe this project will provide the audience a greater appreciation for things we take for granted and encourage cherishing of small things like conversation with loved ones and people may start to notice and give a more critical look at the everyday rather than unquestioning acceptance. I also believe my project is relevant at a time where a lot of the population are embroiled in new technologies and are more withdrawn from social situations. I will continue to document my encounters with the everyday as I have fuelled my appreciation for it with this project and have been able to develop my graphical skills in new forms and exercise and create new learning strategies to create insightful, informative work.

HARPER CHALICE I produced a Christmas promotional animation which I sent out by email. This short follows Santa’s Christmas run at workplaces with conventional security whilst promoting the effectiveness and benefits of using this company’s security system.

I produced a set of children’s educational books focusing on African musical instruments. It includes 21 full colour illustrations of instruments from around the African continent with information on each; an introduction to the role of music in Africa and African culture‚; different musical regions;‚ the spread of African music‚; instrument classification and a glossary. There is a full colour version, a colouring book and e-book formats of this 32 page book.
RATION
NATALIE COOPER BOOKS African Patterns Colouring Book Using African motifs as inspiration, I designed this 46 page colouring book for children and using these designs, created a range of handmade greeting cards and homemade screen printed T-shirts.

I created a range of marketing material to promote the books as well as stationery. I designed, printed, cut, (creased and folded) the business cards, greeting cards, postcards, compliment slips, bag labels.
