Learners to new schools Department’s decision results in community losing faith
} Boipelo Mere THE Joe Morolong Road Forum has reportedly been saddened by the de-registration of gr. 11 and gr. 12 learners in 2014. The decision by the Department of Education to de-register the learners resulted in some of the community members and learners losing faith in the forum and looking for placement in other schools that had not been affected by the protests. Some of the learners who were looking for placement said they had decided to start matric afresh, because they had not been taught enough last year.

Worried that they would have to return to their original schools, the learners were frustrated that they did not get placement and were unsure if it was because of the protests or not. “Our time was wasted as the community ended up not even receiving what they wanted. “I am worried. I cannot see myself going for the supplementary examination, because I am not confident enough. “There are some who will be writing the supplementary exams, but I want to repeat gr. 12,” said the learner. Lucky Kaibas, a member of the Road Forum who continued to blame govern-
ment for failing to deliver to its people, gave the assurance that schooling would return to normal this year. He said the forum had taken the mandate from the community that the children had to go back to school. He added that there was a possibility of further protests against the 10 km road. “We are not to blame here. We take our mandate from the community. Government should have responded the minute it realised that the children were not attending school, because education is a top priority to the ruling party. But it did not, instead it showed arrogance. “It is hurtful to us to see what a laugh-
ing stock we have become to the politicians. Even Pres. Jacob Zuma was seen on television laughing when he mentioned our demands and the prevention of schooling. “Today we are also accused by the media controlled by corrupt politicians for refusing the learners to go to camps, which is not true at all.” ) At the time of going to print Sydney Stander of the Northern Cape Department of Education was still looking into the matter of learners moving to other schools and promised to respond. New board plans to raise standards } Boipelo Mere THE new board of the Galeshewe Association for the Care of the Aged and Disabled (Gaasca) promises to work with dedication and to realise the potential that is needed to take the centre to greater heights. It plans to raise Gaasca’s standards to where it belongs. During a welcome-back ceremony hosted for the elderly at Gaasca, the board, elected in September 2014, announced its readiness to get its hands dirty. Hard work will be needed to make space for the 300 targeted members as is required by the Northern Cape Department of Social Development. On the day, the elderly were treated to a healthy meal followed by dessert. According to the chairperson of the board, Jeffrey Zitha, Gaasca was supposed to have accommodated the required number of members a long time ago given its existence of 20 years. He emphasised how much time had been wasted to change the centre around over the years while different leaders came and went. Zitha also elaborated on the positive changes that were supposed to have been implemented already. According to Irene Ndlovu, the co-ordinator at Gaasca, limited transport facilities was the reason the centre could not get more members. She revealed that using the 23-seater bus as the only mode of transport to fetching and dropping off the elderly for their daily programmes is a challenge to them.
“Even if we wish to, we cannot transport all the elders to the centre on a daily basis. Thus we put some of the elderly on the meals and wheels programme, revealed Irene. Zitha said they were dedicated to fixing the house. “It is expected to be of a high standard.” Sharing the interview with the secretary of the board, Jeffrey Kale, the members agreed in unison that challenges of security and transport should be the first to be addressed in order to guarantee the safety of the elderly. “We should improve the channels of communication with members of the community in order to clarify the criteria of membership in the centre,” added Kale. The board made a resolution to raise more funds to address the transport challenges of Gaasca. Apart from the many challenges that the centre faces, Ndlovu expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the different communities for supporting the centre throughout the year. “We had many visitors who offered the centre a helping hand in different ways,” she said. “Some bought our hand-made items after we had showcased them. We were also spoiled by different organisations, companies and government departments. We feel blessed.” The centre is further expected to launch an elderly choir this year to showcase their talent.

‘Social network is ruining my life’ } Boipelo Mere LEBO NTSHEKISANG was hospitalised for depression after the realisation that her picture had been splashed all over social networks as the person who had spreads Aids in and around Kuruman. Ntshekisang, who is a married mother, said that the post that had been splashed on Facebook and WhatsApp had been the talk of the town since around December last year. She is known to be openly living with HIV and is a member of the Gasegonyana Local Aids Council representing the People Living with HIV (PLHIV) sector. She is also reported to have volunteered her services at the Kuruman Clinic ARV site, including the Kamden Clinic, as an HCT counsellor. The number to be called on the Facebook post leads everyone to a Zimbabwean man, who claims to be a gardener in Cape Town. The man who calls himself Phillip Nyakurita, swore that he was not the one responsible for the post that implicated Ntshekisang of being an Aids-spreading machine. The concerned Nyakurita said he had arrived in the country two weeks ago and got endless calls to enquire whether the Facebook post was true. “I told myself that it was none of my business, because I have nothing to hide. People are continuing to call me and it is affecting my work, because my boss sees that I am always on the

I am just a garden boy in Cape Town renting a backroom in Khayelitsha,” explained Nyakurita, who also voluntarily gave Express Northern Cape his home address for confirmation. To clear his name, he was confident enough to refer callers to MTN for retrieval of his details and calls. In that manner he said it would also prove that he had

never met any South African women and had never been to any other town before. “I keep on hearing that town’s name (Kuruman), but I do not have any idea where it is.” The Civil Society Forum is planning a march on Friday against the abuse of people living with HIV and Aids. They raised concerns about the many unresolved cases related to stigmatisation and discrimination
which were not addressed in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District (JTG). They quoted a recent incident where another civil society forum member representing the PLHIV in Joe Morolong was verbally attacked by a community member during her health education session in December. “We are raising these issues because two weeks ago another counsellor was verbally assaulted
by a community member during an educational programme. That is discouraging and discriminating,” said Mpho Lekgetho, the chairperson of the Civil Society Forum. “The story seems to be written by an angry uninformed member of society. “These two people have decided to go out publicly with their status for many years and this has helped us to be able to get the current number of support groups in the district. “It is with regret today that they are experiencing such discrimination in this district,” added Lekgetho. She continued to add that people like the two victims were those the forum relied on, who were bold enough to stand up on podiums and share their personal journey at relevant events for free in an effort to help society to be able to accept their status and get tested. “The story written about her (Ntshekisang) is discouraging people to get tested and those who were ready to disclose their status are scared. “As the forum we would like to have a peaceful Black Day Mouth Zipped March and we need support as an injury to one is an injury to many. “The march aims to be an educational session, flyers will be distributed and posters will have messages ending stigmatisation.” More details of the planned march will be communicated through the media.

De Wit het tot Oktober by die departement van maatskaplike dienste in Bloemfontein gewerk. Hanlie was ’n gr. 9-leerling aan die Hoërskool Jim Fouché. Die ongeluk was Vrydag omstreeks 16:00 op die R31 tussen Kimberley en Barkly-Wes. Die groot impak van die vragmotor wat hulle van voor getref het, het hul motor dadelik opgefrommel. Lettie Hattingh van Bloemfontein, Susan se ma, sê volgens die polisie het die motor verskeie kere gerol nadat die band gebars het. Volgens Lt. Olebogeng Tawana, polisiewoordvoerder, het De Wit vermoedelik beheer oor die voertuig verloor nadat die band gebars het. Die motor het omgeswaai en in die ander baan beland, reg voor die aankomende vragmotor wat op pad na Kimberley was. Die ongeluk was digby ’n kruis wat vir die slagoffers van ’n vorige ongeluk opgerig is. Hattingh sê haar dogter het twee weke gelede haar eie klein motor vir haar (Hattingh) gegee, en met Hattingh se motor gery. Sy (De Wit) het beplan om dié ou motor in ’n latere stadium vir ’n nuwe een in te ruil. “As hulle in dié klein karretjie was (wat sy vir my gegee het), sou ons nie eens iets gehad het om te begrawe nie,” het Hattingh hartseer gesê. De Wit het in Oktober by die departement van maatskaplike dienste in Bloemfontein bedank nadat sy lank daar gewerk het.

Hy het haar elke naweek kom haal om by hom te kuier. “Hy het ook elke dag die huis aangedoen om haar sommer net te sien. “Haar ma en pa was alles in haar lewe,” het Hattingh getuig. “Sy en haar ma was baie na aan mekaar.” Hoewel sy deur haar dogter en kleinkind se dood platgeslaan is, het Hattingh die polisie in Kimberley groot lof oor hul hantering van die ongeluk toegeswaai. “Hulle was Vrydag dadelik op die toneel. Toe ons (Saterdag) daar was, was hul diens ook wonderlik,” het sy gesê. Susan de Wit het in Kathu grootgeword, waar sy aan die Hoërskool Kathu gematrikuleer het.

A force to be reckoned with } Boipelo Mere “LADIES and gentlemen, seven distinctions for this young man.” These were the words of Franz Gaetsewe, the proud uncle of Moremogolo Gaetsewe, as he made his way to the stage to accept his trophy during the awards ceremony. Moremogolo of the Baitiredi Technical School in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District had just been announced as one of the 20 top achievers in the province. With his results in the 2014 matric exams, his dream to study actuarial science at the University of Cape Town (UCT) had finally been realised. It was no surprise when a late announcement was made at the end of the ceremony that the Assmang Kumane Iron Mine had decided to fund Moremogolo and his co-matriculant Clementine Molelekwa of the Batlharotlhaping High School with a full bursary. Thanks to his hard work, dedication and commitment, Moremogolo scored an incredible 98% in Mathematics and 97% in Accounting. He has been preparing for his aimed career path since he was in gr.10. “While my peers were busy with all kinds of social activities, I preferred to play around with numbers,” he added shyly.

According to his uncle, Franz, the family is extremely excited and proud of Moremogolo for his exceptional performace in the 2014 matric exams. His family believes that this will be an inspiration to other kids who are venturing into the class of 2015. Moremogolo and his younger sister were raised single-handedly by their mother. Hardships were plentiful after their father had died.
Franz said the boy never disappointed his family. “It was quite a feat. He is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with,” he said. “By the way, as many may be aware, Actuarial Science is an extremely challenging course that calls for students who are above average and totally committed. “At UCT, if you don’t have an A in Mathematics, you will not be accepted in this discipline. “Many are called, but few are
chosen,” Franz boasted. Regarding the bursaries that Moremogolo was awarded, his uncle said it was very well deserved. “How his mother would cope without such assistance is too ghastly to contemplate.” Moremogolo’s deputy principal, Thuso Masilo, accompanied him to the awards ceremony. “He did not only make his parents proud, but his school and the JTG District as a whole.”
Police looking for murder suspect AN identikit was released by the Kagisho police after a man hunt had been launched in connection with the murder of Jeremia Itumeleng Basson (34). Basson was stabbed to death with a sharp object by an unknown man in the ABC
Cemetery in Galeshewe on 6 January at approximately 21:00. “We are appealing to community members to assist the police in tracking down the whereabouts of the suspect appearing in the identikit,” stated the police. The suspect is an African male,

Die noordelike kampus (rondom die Oppenheimer-tuine) en die sentrale kampus sal later met lanings en studentepaaie met die suidelike kampus, wat rondom Hoffepark beplan word, verbind word. Die afstand tussen die boonste punt van die noordelike kampus en die onderste punt van die suidelike kampus is sowat 3 km. Ballim sê hy wil hê dat die Sol Plaatje-munisipaliteit meer fietspaaie moet bou. “Ons moet die Noord-Kaapse skoon lug en ongelooflike nagruim teen uitlaatgasse beskerm. Ons geboue word daarom met groen tegnologie ingerig.” ’n Tekort aan behuising vir studente is een van die probleme wat die universiteit ervaar. Dié probleme behoort egter iets van die verlede te wees wanneer nuwe koshuise teen volgende jaar voltooi is. Vier hyskrane troon al maande oor die terrein van die RC Elliotkoshuis wat voorheen deur die kollege vir voortgesette onderwys en opleiding (VOO) gebruik is. Dié terrein word die sentrale kampus van die universiteit. Winkels, ’n biblioteek, ’n restaurant en lesingsale word hier opgerig. Teen 2018 sal die kampus bestaan uit agt geboue tot by die suidelike kampus van die universiteit, rondom Hoffepark. ’n Groep van vyf argitekte het die geboue ontwerp. Omgewingsvriendelike materiaal word in die bouwerk gebruik. Die totale koste van die bouprojek is R860 miljoen. Bouwerk is binne begroting en spertyd. Die gebou van die ou Diamond Lodge-hotel in Dutoitspanweg en die White Ways-woonstelgebou is deur die universiteit gekoop en dien reeds as koshuise. Dit kan egter net 180 studente huisves. Ballim sê die kampus is só ontwerp dat die publiek toegang tot groot dele sal hê. Dele van die kampus sal openbare terreine wees waartoe almal toegang sal hê. Die publiek sal byvoorbeeld ook by die winkels op die sentrale kampus kan koop. Ander dele sal semi-privaat wees. Só sal lesinglokale bedags net vir studente-gebruik wees, maar sal saans deur die publiek vir ander doeleindes gebruik kan word. Daar sal ook private gebiede wees wat net deur die universiteit gebruik sal word.

Exposed mine raises concern

CONTINUOUS theft of the fence around the Kamfersdam situated between Lerato Park, Homelite and Homevale has raised concern among the residents in the area. Almost half of the fence surrounding the manhole has been stolen bit by bit. The latest incident happened last week on Thursday when security guards on the site were chased by thieves in the middle of the night. According to one of the three guards, Samkelo Magoma, who was on duty, they saw a group of more than five men cutting the fence during their foot patrol. “When they saw us, they started chasing us with pangas and knives. We fled and called the police as soon as we were safe.” According to Magoma, the criminals made it a point to finish what they were doing before they left. “The fence was still standing there when we saw them, but they managed to remove it before the police arrived. When we
returned to inspect, the fence was removed with the poles, except for a few lines of the razor fence that were lying on the scene.” The security guard said they were also left with the responsibility of keeping the children away from the mine dumb. The residents, especially those in Lerato Park, said that they feared for the lives of their children now that the mine dump had been exposed. “The real reason for this place being closed is for the safety of the children after a child was killed here a few years ago,” said a tuckshop owner who lives opposite the now open mine. He added that he has made it his responsibility to keep children away from the hole. “You know a child being a child, I keep on chasing away the same children on a daily basis because they are now curious to see why I refuse them the right to go near the dam.” A case of robbery is being investigated by the Roodepan police following the incident. “Security guards were threatened with

Six out on bail for possession of firearms SIX men from Victoria-West were each granted bail of R500 following their court appearance on 7 January on charges of the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The suspects, Wilfred May (31), Ricardo Olyn (29), Fabian Louw (30), Pieter Jooste (39), Ruwhalin Tieties (19) and Martin Antonie (45) were granted bail and the case has been remanded for 9 February. The suspects were reportedly nabbed after the Victoria-West police followed up on a tip-off by the community. A person was seen travelling from Victoria-West en-route to Beaufort-West with firearms and ammunition. These were stolen at a house in Victoria-West. The Victoria-West station commander, Lt Col Boetie de Bruin, responded swiftly and set up a vehicle check-point approximately
40 km out on the N12 south. A white Toyota Hilux bakkie was stopped and searched, in which one 4,5 mm pistol with 14 rounds, one 6,35 mm pistol with 6 rounds and 3 compatible firearm magazines were found hidden under the back seat of the vehicle. The bakkie, allegedly utilised in the commission of a crime, was confiscated by the police. The De Aar Cluster commander, Brig. Nomahlubi Sofika, lauded her members for the professional and vigilant response to the information received and forwarded her gratitude to the community for their help in this regard. “It is an honour to start off the year with crime buster partners such as the ones we currently have. Together we can fight crime.”

Taxi drivers compete

IN an effort to improve the image of the Taxi Industry and saving lives in the Northern Cape province, the provincial Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, in conjunction with the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), hosted a Taxi Driver Competition over the weekend. The competition simultaneously took place in five districts, namely De Aar, Kimberley, Mothibistad, Springbok and Upington. The competition will also be a way of
celebrating excellence in the taxi industry while sharpening the skills of queue marshals and drivers’ assistants. They will receive customer care training to improve the services they render to the public. According to Santaco, taxis transport approximately 15 million commuters daily with 60% to 70% being commuting public and workforce. The Taxi Industry nominated 20 participants from each district to compete in the competitions where finalists will qualify for the provincial competition in February.

Gentle giant laid to rest } Boipelo Mere THE circuit steward of the Centenary Methodist Church, David Mecong Kgware, well known as Oom Davie, was laid to rest over the weekend. During the service in the fully-packed Centenary Methodist Church in Galeshewe, speaker after speaker described him as a spiritually mature person, a role model and a peacekeeper who was sensitive to other people’s feelings. According to his fellow churchgoers, he was a great preacher, but through his humbleness was willing to be led by others. The Methodist Church described Kgware’s passing as a great tree that had fallen. According to his fellow preacher Gilla Molatlhwe, Kgware never had any problem with his assignments and always motivated fellow preachers by attending their services. “He was one of the few who practised what he preached when he spoke about love, peace and forgiveness,” he added. A memorial service was also held by the ANC where he was lauded for his role as a political activist and his role of serving in local branches and being elected as the chief whip of the first Northern Cape Legislature in 1994. He was later deployed to the National Council of Provinces and elected to serve as a chairperson of the select committee on sport, arts and education. He later retired and returned to Kimberley.

Four arrested for stolen sheep
FOUR suspects between the ages of 34 and 53 were arrested and will be charged with the possession of stolen livestock. This comes after they were caught on Monday with sheep believed to be stolen. The police of the Kimberley 10111 Unit arrested the suspects after following up on a tip-off from the community. A witness informed the police that four men were seen slaughtering sheep in Kesebaketse Street, Galeshewe. When officers arrived on the scene,
the suspects were still engaged in the bloody deed. Three sheep were already slaughtered and two were still alive. It is not yet known where the sheep were stolen and the owner is yet to be established. The date for the suspects’ appearance before the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court still needs to be confirmed. Maj.Gen. Risimati Shivuri, the deputy provincial commissioner in the Northern Cape, praised the members of Kimberley 10111 for their swift reaction and the effective arrest of the suspects.
He also thanked the community members for their involvement and for providing the tip that led to the arrest. Shivuri made a commitment that, in 2015, the police would strive to prioritise the safety of the residents and the safekeeping of their property. Anyone with information concerning the stolen sheep is urged to contact the Galeshewe police on 053-807-6012 or contact Crime Stop on 086-001-0111. The public is also welcome to send SMSs to 32211 for the duration of the investigation.

BAFANA BAFANA made a disappointing start to their 2015 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) campaign as they lost 1-3 against Algeria on Monday. Shakes Mashaba’s troops dominated the game from the start and should have taken the lead in the 23rd minute, but Dean Furman’s rasping shot from the edge of the box rattled the woodwork. Bafana should have wrapped up the game in the first half, but their strikers were wasteful in front of goal. Tokelo Rantie was set free just before the half-hour mark, but his effort went just wide and South Africa were to rue their missed chances. However, they took the lead early in the second half through Thuso Phala after a good move involving Rantie and Andile Jali. They could have doubled their lead a few minutes later when they were awarded a penalty after Jali was brought down in the box, but Rantie blasted the spot kick against the crossbar. After that missed penalty, Thulani Hlatshwayo headed the ball into his own net in an attempt to clear the danger. Bafana never recovered from that setback.

Soon they were a goal down as Faouzi Ghoulam beat Darren Keet from close range, before Islam Silman sealed a come-from-behind victory for Algeria, as he slotted under Keet. The Bafana shot-stopper should have done a lot better to save the ball. The South Africans must win their next two Group C matches against Senegal on Friday (21:00) and Ghana on Tuesday (21:00) if they entertain any thoughts of making it through to the knockout stages of the tournament. Coach Mashaba said there were aspects that needed to be fixed ahead of their next fixtures. “We need to motivate the guys, talk to them, bring them back to their feet,” Mashaba said. “You look at the moments in which we lost the game, at crucial times, and the kind of goals we conceded. “The first goal was an own goal – the goalkeeper and his defence lacked communication. The second goal as well – we allowed them to stretch us and then they came through in the middle and they scored. “I think these are the things we will be able to repair in the next game. It is just that it has made our work more difficult, because the next two games are must wins.”
