A Sentimental Journey Join us on a fascinating tour across 18th-century Europe, visiting its most important cultural centres and musical towns. From London to Vienna, travelling through Italy and Germany: this programme is inspired and guided by composer and diarist Charles Burney (1726-1814), - a real man-of-his-times - especially by the memories he wrote in his well-known “Journal” during his long European Grand Tour: The Present State of Music, London 1773. Featuring music by Telemann, Hasse, CPE Bach and others we will recall stages of his journey, highlighting the stylistic changes and newest compositional techniques of the late 18th century. www.facebook.com/IlQuadroAnimato www.ilquadroanimato.com

The NCEM is one of eight major partner organisations from across the European Union involved in the eeemerging project that aims to promote new talent in young professional early music ensembles. This dynamic programme is led by the Centre culturel de rencontre d’Ambronay, France and brings together Ars Ramovš, Ljubljana, Slovenia; Centre de musique ancienne de l’Université de musique

de Bucarest, Romania; Centre de musique ancienne de Riga, Latvia; Ghislieri Musica, Pavia, Italy; Internationale Händel-Festspiele Göttingen, Germany; Ozango Productions, Strasbourg, France and the National Centre for Early Music, York.

Media vita Join us in the Nave of Beverley Minster to hear the University of York’s acclaimed vocal ensemble The 24. They celebrate the rich German choral traditions of Schütz, Schein and Mendelssohn: formal, daring and beautifully crafted – presented here alongside the rarely heard English Tudor masterpiece John Sheppard’s ‘Media vita’ – a glorious sound-scape which could have been purposefully designed to celebrate this magnificent building.

Echoes of the Danube: The Flow of Habsburg Power Power and influence flowed from 17th-century Vienna and across the Holy Roman Empire. The Imperial capital was a hub of Italianate music and culture, with many musicians recruited directly from Venice and Rome. It is no surprise that archives across former Habsburg lands include works by Italians such as Rigatti, Rovetta, Sances, PandolfiMealli and Bertali. Emperor Leopold I was himself an excellent composer (a second son, he was never expected to rule so was trained in all the liberal arts). His Regina coeli is an expressive testament to the far-reaching

influence of Italian music. Composers from north of the Alps could nevertheless flourish in this environment, as evidenced by the success of contrasting composers like Muffat, Biber, Johann Schenck and the Franconian kapellmeister Johann Staden. “Rising star of the countertenor world Alex Potter sings sublimely” International Record Review “In Echo, representing the cream of Europe’s young period instrumental ensembles” Classical Music Magazine www.inecho.co.uk

SATURDAY 26 MAY Event 6 3.30pm – c.4.30pm Venue St John of Beverley RC Church, 5 North Bar Without Tickets £10.00

A Tale of Three Cities An illustrated talk by John Bryan In the days before mass communication, musicians and their patrons could only discover new musical styles by travelling, or by collecting music from the great European centres of musical production. John Bryan, Professor of Music at the University of Huddersfield, highlights musical activities in 16th- and 17th-century Venice, Vienna and London and investigates how these cities acted as hubs, attracting musicians from foreign parts, cross-fertilising with native musical styles, and sending innovative musical ideas radiating out across the continent. This tale of musical life in three great renaissance and baroque cities will provide the context in which much of the music in the festival’s concert programmes was created.

Event 7 7.30pm – c.9.30pm Venue St Mary’s Church, North Bar Within Tickets £26.00 (concessions £23.00, under 35s* £5.00)

EXAUDI James Weeks director

‘Quel augellin che canta...’ the EXAUDI Italian Madrigal Book In recent years the vocal ensemble EXAUDI has received international acclaim for its brilliant and imaginative performances of 16th-century Italian madrigal repertoire, often paired with new madrigals by living composers. Here in Beverley they offer a (nearly) all-Renaissance programme, contrasting the sparkling virtuosity of the pastoral madrigal with the darker colours of the later expressionist style. At the heart of this programme is an encounter between two of the madrigal’s greatest masters, Marenzio and Monteverdi, whose works in both lighter and more serious veins seem to shadow and echo each other, from twin settings of Quel augellin che canta to a pair of masterpieces: Marenzio’s Solo e pensoso, and Monteverdi’s Rimanti in pace. Finally we hear two contemporary responses to the madrigal tradition, Salvatore Sciarrino’s breathtaking settings of Matsuo Bashō and Michael Finnissy’s dialogue with the tortured chromatics of Gesualdo. “EXAUDI, the extraordinary ensemble of vocal virtuosi” Sunday Times www.exaudi.org.uk

Ashley Solomon

flute

Father, Son and Godfather Ashley Solomon explores repertoire for unaccompanied flute by three giants of the baroque era. Six Fantasias by Telemann are performed either side of works by Johann Sebastian Bach and his most famous son Carl Phillip Emmanuel who was inspired to write for the flute by his employer King Frederick the Great of Prussia. All three composers were very closely linked, with Telemann being CPE Bach’s Godfather. All twelve Fantasias have recently been recorded by Ashley Solomon for Channel Classics on a number of flutes, including two unique instruments both built in 1760. One is an ivory flute by the English maker Cahusac, the other belongs to the Royal Collection Trust and is believed to have been owned and played by King George III. “The solo flute, exquisitely played by Ashley Solomon” The Sunday Times
