Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jacob Zalenski, Kenyon nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2018-19 academic year. The NCAC earned another NCAA Division III swimming & diving championship last year as Denison claimed the men’s title for the fifth time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 73 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2018-19 academic year, 216 All-America or Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON UNANIMOUS FAVORITE IN NCAC MEN’S TENNIS PRESEASON POLL CLEVELAND, OH – Kenyon was the unanimous favorite in the 2020 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Men’s Tennis Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released Tuesday, Feb. 4. The Lords received all nine first-place votes for 81 total points after balloting by the conference coaches. Denison landed in second, totaling 69 points, Oberlin was slotted third with 61 points, three points ahead of DePauw (58) in fourth, while Wooster rounded out the top five with 46 points. Wittenberg (33), Ohio Wesleyan (26), Allegheny (20) and Wabash (11) completed the nine-team field. Kenyon returns the NCAC Player of the Year in senior Jacob Zalenski (Canton, OH/Jackson). Zalenski recorded a 20-4 record last season and was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Assocation (ITA) All-American. The Lords also return All-NCAC singles first-teamer, Austin Diehl (O’Fallen, MO/Homeschool) who produced an 18-3 record in his junior season. Sophomore Pascal Lee (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and junior Bryan Yoshino (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) also return after taking All-NCAC singles honorable mention accolades in 2018-19. Kenyon leads the NCAC with 22 championships in 35 years (1989, 1991-93, ‘95, 2002-05, 2007-19), including winning 17 of the last 18 conference titles. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count with 12 championships (1985-89, ‘94, 1997-01, ‘06); Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, ‘96) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, DePauw University, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.

KENYON TOPS NCAC WOMEN’S TENNIS PRESEASON POLL CLEVELAND, OH – Kenyon was picked first in the 2020 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Women’s Tennis Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released Tuesday, Feb. 4. The Ladies topped the poll after receiving seven of the eight first-place votes cast by the league coaches for 63 total points. Denison was second in the voting, nabbing one first-place vote and 57 points overall. DePauw checked in at third with 47 points, while Oberlin (40) and Wooster (33) took fourth and fifth. Rounding out the poll were Wittenberg (21) in sixth, Allegheny (15) in seventh and Ohio Wesleyan (13) in eighth. Kenyon, under the guidance of Scott Thielke, has won three consecutive NCAC tournament championships. The ladies enter the 2020 spring season ranked No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) NCAA Division III rankings after a 19-4 record a season ago. Returners include 2019 NCAC Player of the Year, Erika Oku (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central), All-NCAC singles first-teamer Daria Beshentseva (Moscow, Russia/Lyceum 1535) and singles second-team selection Ilana Blackwood (Saint James, Barbados/Queens). In 35 years of North Coast women’s tennis competition, four schools have claimed league championships: Allegheny took the first title in 1985, while Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison’s first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies’ streak in 2002, reeling off 10-straight titles from 2002-11. DePauw earned fourstraight titles from 2012-15, before Denison earned the top spot in 2016 and Kenyon reclaimed the title the last three seasons. Kenyon leads the way with 18 North Coast titles, followed by Denison (12), DePauw (4) and Allegheny (1).
