ACCOUNTANCY MATTERS

August/September

Your next car could be more expensive than you think By Alistair Wallace at BKB Accountants You would not believe how many times we are asked, “What are tax implications of buying this car or that?” Large family diesel estates now boast emissions of under 110g/km and fuel consumption of over 50 mpg. Hybrids half the emissions and over 100 mpg.

changes. If you drove a £30,000 electric company car, last year you would have only paid tax on £1,500. By 2019, this rises to £5,700 – a whopping 280% increase. What conclusion do we draw from this?

Owned in a business and a car with emissions of under 75g/km achieves full tax write off in year 1. Compare that for a normal petrol/diesel, which attracts only an 18% write off.

As an employee, it might push you into buying your own car and charging for business mileage and therefore have no regard for environmental factors. All types of cars seem hard hit by future tax changes and one wonders if company cars have had their day.

The position becomes even worse for employees. Let’s compare a £30,000 hybrid car with 49g/km and a similar diesel car with 109g/km. What you would pay tax on each year is:

As a sole trade business owner and for a company, there are still benefits for the time being for buying electric and hybrid, but petrol and diesels less so.

Confidence...

02 YOUR NEXT CAR...

Do you have confidence in yourself, your products and your staff? If we look up the word ‘confidence’ in the dictionary it is stated, “the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something.” In my view, with the UK decision to stand alone, outside of the European Union, this is more important than ever. We need to have strong, confident companies led by individuals who know their products, have faith in their products and can build teams of staff that also trust their leaders, as well as understand and have confidence in what they do. This is done by education and training. Getting help from others, working together and using those companies that display this confidence will also lead to more and more companies doing well and thriving. This month in New Business Matters “Waste Wise” will train your staff for you. “BKB Accountants” can show you how to make the most of your well earned finances. Clifford from PCs Made Simple can improve the speed of your internet. “Remous” will take care of all of your print needs. “Copyrite” is partnering with World Software and can totally secure your documents on the Cloud. The Cumberland Hotel can provide you with a good night out… after all rewards are important too! There are many successful companies inside who will confidently help your business grow. Here’s to a great summer!

Advertising: A luxury or a must?

By Debbie Corney, Director at Dorset Publications In the introduction to New Business Matters I talk about the importance of having confidence in your product and services. I believe this is vital.

In advertising it is key to display this confidence, show how you can help your clients. Why are you the best in your field? Why should anyone use your services as opposed to a competitor? How do you genuinely show this so that the readers make that all important call to you? Stand back and look at what you do. What service or product are you really confident in delivering? Have you had fantastic feedback that you can talk about? What are you passionate about in your business?

The look of the advert is also important. Does it stand out? You have only a second or two to capture the audience’s attention, so the colours and design can make all the difference. Will people notice you?

COMPUTER REPAIR MATTERS

8 tips to boost your wireless network

By Clifford Johnson from PCs Made Simple No one enjoys slow internet, so here are 3 simple networking tips to help boost your speed, put together by your friends at PCs Made Simple. 1) INVESTIGATE YOUR ROUTER Most routers have a (somewhat secret) settings page that with a little clever know-how you can access to fiddle with settings like lights, parental controls, website blocking/filtering, access scheduling and some more advanced things like your DNS and DHCP settings. 2) INVEST IN A NEW ROUTER It’s an upsetting thought, but most routers in use are the ones supplied by your ISP (BT, TalkTalk, Sky, etc.) and unfortunately their first priority will usually be to manufacture as many as they can as cheaply as possible, often meaning you end up with a sub-par piece of kit. However, this can be easily resolved by purchasing a new router. These range from £30 all the way up to hundreds for ones boasting the latest technology. We can help you find a replacement for your router should you decide you want one and often have several in stock. The best thing to do if you’re not sure is to look up your routers model number online to see what others think of it. If many are complaining and your internet isn’t quite as good as it should be then it’s quite likely an upgrade is needed.

3) CHECK YOUR BAND Most Wi-Fi operates in the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz bands, however within these are a number of channels that you can choose from. This is essentially just a way to spread devices across slightly different frequencies so they don’t interfere. For an example, in the 2.4Ghz band, channel 1 might cover 2412Mhz and channel 2 may be 2417Mhz. Ideally you want your router to be on a channel that’s not near the channel of your neighbours router or your traffic will experience interference that will slow you down. Most routers will automatically scan for neighboring routers when they are power cycled, most people however do not do this often enough and the results of the scan can’t always be trusted. The best thing to do is download an app on your phone (just search ‘WiFi channel scan’ or similar) and then walk around your house to see which channels are not currently in use. You can then enter your routers settings like in the first point and change it manually. For more details on the above and for 5 more tips, find the full article on our website: simple-pcs.co.uk/8-tips-boost-wireless-network And as always, if you need any assistance with the above or would like some friendly, zero-obligation advice, call us on 01202 830121.

FSB MATTERS

August/September

The Federation of Small Businesses The FSB is Britain's leading business organisation with over 200,000 members. It exists to protect and promote the interests of the self-employed, and all those who run small businesses. The FSB in Dorset has 4,000 small businesses as members.

Small firms support streamlining of technical education

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has welcomed the new Post-16 Skills Plan which seeks to address a longstanding need to streamline and reorganise technical and vocational education. FSB hopes the plan will encourage more young people to seek a technical education and ultimately help to close the challenging UK skills gap. The new system will create a common framework of 15 routes across all technical education, down from more than 20,000, which will begin with high-quality, two-year, college-based programmes, aligned to apprenticeships. The plan has been heavily informed by the Sainsbury review of technical education, also published today, accepting all of its proposals. However the Government has also been clear to add the caveat that the plan is subject to future budgetary constraints. Commenting on the changes outlined in the plan, Mike Cherry, National Chairman at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), said: “Small businesses will welcome the move to streamline and standardise

the immensely messy landscape of technical education. In the past many employers have struggled to understand the mindboggling number of different qualifications on offer, making it hard to tell which have value and which do not. We support the idea of a clear and equal pathway for young people into more vocational occupations. For too long the academic pathway has been held up as the most desirable route to learning, leaving the UK under-skilled in technical knowledge and practical skills valued by industry.

“Business will support the focus on giving all students transferable skills, particularly new focus on digital skills training which has become an ever more important to all parts of the economy. We now want to see the Government press ahead with this plan, fully committing to delivering the changes by 2019, ensuring the new skills system meets the needs of small businesses. While we understand the need to keep to budget, the long-term health of the UK economy is dependent on giving our young people the skills needed to get on and contribute."

INSOLVENCY MATTERS

Business is a challenge... but it doesn't have to be!

By Mark Liddle from the Mark Liddle Partnership 35 years ago, I stood on Lambeth Bridge and threw my briefcase in the Thames saying “never again will I work conventionally”. At the time I was MD of 3 companies, part of a large group, but I couldn't stand the politics. That was on a Thursday, the following day I went to my 3 offices and said goodbye to all my staff and put my car keys in the post box of the group head office and caught the train home. The following day I went to Italy for 2 weeks and on the first day back, I saw a Midland Bank Manager, told him what I'd done and he said "despite the fact you're young, you've had a lot of experience in running companies, I think you can help some of my customers". That’s how I got into helping businesses make money and sorting out problems. So for 35 years, I've been helping companies and it took me years to work out the 1 reason why a business makes money is the same reason why a business loses money: FOCUS. Focus just on your

skill, you'll never make money. Focus on profit and you'll make money. What you focus on is what you get. I just wish that companies who give credit to other Limited companies would do a search before giving credit. We have offered this service free of charge to numerous businesses but very few take up the offer. Want to know why? Because they are focusing on their skill not on profit. I also wish that directors / business owners take a debenture when they lend their companies money. Again the majority don’t. Lastly, if your business is a 50/50 share holding, make sure there is “A Shareholder Agreement” in place, as I have never seen a 50/50 shareholding work! Contact me on 01202 551193 or email me at office@markliddle.com for help and advice if your business is more of a challenge than you'd like.

INSURANCE MATTERS

August/September

Should you have business car insurance? By John Palmer of Coversure Insurance

We’re all used to normal car insurance policies that cover you for social, domestic, and pleasure use as well as to and from your usual place of work. However, if you have more than one place of work, you travel to see clients, or use your car for your job, then a normal policy will not always cover you, and you might need business car insurance. Local insurance broker, John Palmer from Coversure Insurance in Poole, answers some common questions about business car insurance: I plan to use my car as a pool car, can my staff drive it? Yes you can take out a business car policy that includes any driver and in some cases any age. Can I use a business car for personal use? Yes a business car policy includes social, domestic & pleasure as well as business use. If I buy another car, can I insure it on the same policy? No; however, if you have three or more vehicles, you can add them to a mini fleet insurance policy.

Does business car insurance include breakdown cover? Breakdown cover is available as an option on most policies. Do business car insurance policies come with legal cover? Yes, but legal cover is often available as an optional extra. If I have to make a claim and my car is off road, can I have a courtesy car? Several business car insurance policies include this as standard; however, if your car is written off due to an accident, fire or theft, you will not always be entitled to a hire / courtesy car. It’s always best to check with a local insurance broker if you need particular levels of cover. If you have any further questions regarding your insurance, whether you have the right cover or could get a better deal, give John a call on 0800 223 0060 or email poole@coversure.co.uk.

PRINTING MATTERS

August/September

Digital-Litho-Inkjet What do I need?

By Alan Bunter, MD of Remous Limited As technology moves on in our ever-changing world the print industry is having to adapt rapidly! This is the second in a series of three articles, a Free Guide, that will give you a better knowledge and enable you to make informed decisions for your business. Litho is the now traditional form of printing (which superseded letterpress) and is the process that you may be aware of with ink, rollers, chemistry and printing plates. Considered a bit of a black art for many years but when executed properly delivers stunning results and economies of scale. Litho works but using an anodised aluminium plate, with ink rollers and water rollers resting on it as the plate cylinder rotates, the image is burned onto the plate then washed before it gets to press, where the anodisation remains – the ink sticks, where the anodised coating is washed away the water sticks and in simple terms oil and water don mix – that is the lithographic process. In essence this still the case some 50 years after it became mainstream but modern presses have become extremely complex, automated and computerised to deliver faster setup times, faster running speeds and outstanding quality. We are one of the first print companies in the UK to invest in the new Hybrid UV print process where we no longer need to wait for ink to dry, so there is no marking, now drying time, shorter lead times and much more environmentally sound. For a quick and easy guide, in summary here are the pro’s and con’s of litho print in real terms for the client.

3. No variable data etc 4. Short run can be expensive compared to digital. What is Litho Print suited to? So interesting as that may be, how does that apply to you? It depends on the project is the short answer! We often get asked: ‘when is litho more competitive than digital?’ which is very difficult to answer as it depends on the product being printed. 1000 books would most likely be more suited to litho but 1000 leaflets would be digital. When we are given a brief to quote we will also discuss what you are looking to achieve, how many you would prefer and the intended use. A village fete programme will be more about cost and timing than a corporate brochure which will need to exhibit premium quality, brand consistency and eye catching print. In general promotional literature certainly that require brand consistency will be printed using our litho press, any items that need pantone colours or metallic colours would also be a litho print job. The important thing to ask yourself is what is the primary function of my print – what is most important about the final product and start with that end in mind. If you are unsure or would like more advice on a specific print project – just call or email us and we will help. If you would like a free audit of your print or business stationery please give us a call on 01963 250920 and we can arrange a consultation, no pressure just a free audit, with some ideas thrown in for free!

What are the Benefits of Litho Print? 1. Premium Quality 2. Reduced unit prices 3. More paper options (and at Remous plastics too) 4. Spot Pantone and metallic colours 5. Perfect registration 6. Larger sheet sizes. (7. At Remous, our Lightcure technology delivers instantly dry print the same as digital print) What are the Challenges of Litho Print? 1. Higher setup costs 2. Longer process (Needs plates to be made)

Why You Should Be Using Instagram In Your Business By Mike Sharp from Mike's Online Academy

If the coast is clear and your kids have in a rare moment left their smartphone unattended take a quick look and you are very likely to find the Instagram logo on the screen What is Instagram you may ask? Unlike your kids I won't laugh in your face before giving you the answer! Instagram appeared in 2010 and is a mobile based social networking application that allows you to share your photos and videos with friends and the world. A variety of filters and edits can be applied to your photos before they are published. Now all that sounds great and very cool but you may ask why is it being talked about in a business magazine? Consider these stats: • Instagram has as of July 2016 500 Million users who share over 95 million posts daily. • Back in 2012 Facebook purchased Instagram for a cool £1 billion dollars. (They saw its commercial potential back then) • While the growth of Facebook has slowed down, the growth of Instagram has been rapid.

• 48% of all brands are on Instagram. • Instagram gets 58% more engagement than Facebook and 120% more engagement than Twitter. • Businesses can advertise on Instagram just like Facebook and Twitter. • Lastly, I would say that Instagram is very popular but not too overcrowded making now the ideal time to get involved. If you need any help with Instagram or social media in your business do give me a call on 01202 912385 or email me at mike@mikesonlineacademy.com and we can discuss it over a coffee!

• Over 60% of Instagram users log in daily making it the second most engaged social network after Facebook. • 30% of all internet users are now on Instagram • 90% of Instagram users are younger than 35! If your business or brand want to target this demographic Instagram is ideal. Page 14
