Elite Athletes Ones to watch - Men Stuart Hayes At the 2012 London

Olympics, Stuart proved an invaluable member of the team. He led the group on the bike stage as Team GB pushed a blistering pace and ensured any attacks were covered, and that the Brownlee brothers could keep their rivals in check. . He helped the Brownlee brothers on their way to a . gold and bronze medal, finishing himself in 37th. Stuart attended Orleans Park School, Twickenham, and hails from a swimming background at Hounslow Swimming Club. He converted to triathlon at age 15, around the same time that Hounslow teammate Tim Don (2006 World Champion) did exactly the same. Stuart has been a regular performer on the ITU circuit, having finished on the podium at events around the world. His highlight came in 2010 when he won the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series Kitzbuhel. He made an attack on the bike which opened up a big lead that was not caught on the run, even by 2010 World Champion Javier Gomez. Stuart is known for being an exceptional swimmer . and attacking cyclist. He also does very well in nondrafting races. Stuart is coached by Michelle Dillon who is also his wife.

Will Clarke Will finished the 2011 season ranked 9th in the world. His highlight was finishing second in the Dextro Energy Triathlon - ITU World Championship Series Hamburg. He spent the winter of 2010/2011 training on the Gold Coast, working with coach Michelle Dillon and training with Stuart Hayes and Jodie Stimpson. This is the first time that he has spent the winter aboard, having previously always trained in Loughborough. In 2010 Will was 6th at the highly competitive Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup in Des Moines, Iowa. This was arguably the best result of his season as he suffered a bike crash in August and was forced to miss the World Championship Grand Final in September. In October 2010 Will married his long-term girlfriend, Clare, in their home town, Cambridge. He lives in Loughborough and has a dog, Lola.

Adam Bowden Adam has been competing at national standard in athletics and swimming since he was very young. He represented Great Britain and England at cross country and on the track. Adam also swam for his county. Adam specialised in the 3k steeplechase and was the British National Champion and Olympic trials winner in 2008. He was 9th in the 3k steeplechase in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Knowing that the steeplechase is globally dominated by the Kenyans, Adam was seeking a new challenge to become successful on the world stage when he decided to move to the triathlon in 2008. He was accepted as a member of the Tri Gold programme, British Triathlon’s talent identification programme entirely funded by Barrie Well, which aims to fast track athletes into becoming world class triathletes. After a successful year of working with coach Rick Valeti at British Triathlon’s National Performance Centre at Loughborough University, Adam was invited to join the World Class Performance Programme and trains full time in Loughborough with coach Mark Pearce. He had a breakthrough race in September 2011 with 7th in the World Championship Series Yokohama.

Ones to watch - Women Vanessa Raw Vanessa came to triathlon having come to Loughborough University to study Fine Art. It wasn’t until the January of her first year that she thought she would give triathlon a go. Having . swum as a teenager, that was initially what caught the eye of the coaches, . but she adapted well to the varied training. In 2006, her second year in the sport, Vanessa made a big impression both nationally and internationally: second at the Windsor Triathlon after running shoulder to shoulder with Helen Jenkins; 4th at the U23 World Triathlon Championships on a demanding Lausanne course; 10th at the Beijing World Cup, test event for the Beijing Olympics. Unfortunately, injury ruined both 2007 and 2008 . but important lessons were learnt. Vanessa’s perseverance was rewarded in 2009 with podium performances in her last two races. Two second . places at races in Poland and Czech Republic . showed she was returning to form.

Celebrity & Elite Athletes continued from page 16 In 2010 she gained an upper second class degree in Fine Art from Loughborough University and is now focussing on triathlon in the lead up to 2012. She is now based full time in Kingston-Upon-Thames, coached by Jon Roberts and Chris Ball.

Helle Frederiksen Helle Frederiksen was a well known swimmer and from the age of 12 to 18 she was a member of the National Danish Swimming Squad. She had won several Danish championships when in 1999 she decided to retire from the sport. Helle has been a professional triathlete since graduating from University of Copenhagen in 2008. Helle obtained the highest grade possible while studying her Master of Science Degree in Physical Education & Human Nutrition. Upon graduating from University Helle decided to pursue a career in triathlon. Helles triathlon career now sees her compete at the highest level the sport has to offer, racing throughout famous cities all over the world. Like most Olympics distance triathletes, Helles main goal is to compete in the London 2012 Olympics.

Jodie Stimpson 2010 British Triathlon Super Series and last year’s Virgin Active London Triathlon winner is coached by . British Olympian, Michelle Dillon. In the six years from 2005 to 2010 Stimpson took part in 17 ITU competitions and achieved six top ten positions. She had a breakthrough season in 2009, winning the British Triathlon Super Series and aggressively leading out the run at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series London. She has since won the Super Series another two times. Jodie is based in Birmingham for most of the year, and is part of British Triathlon’s World Class Affiliates Programme.

Lois Rosindale Lois is a member of the High Performance Triathlon Squad based at the satellite centre in her hometown of Leeds and is coached by Jack Maitland. Lois comes from

a gymnastics background, and began competing in duatlons at the age of 15, hoping to become a triathlete. She had not previously done much swimming, but progressed significantly on her bike and on foot. Significant time has been spent on her swimming and Lois has had an excellent 2011, including wining the National Elite title. She has also represented Great Britain at championship events during 2011 including European and World Championships. Lois represented Great Britain in the Under 23 Event at the GE 2010 Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships in September and won silver. She led for a significant proportion of the race, but lost a drink bottle during the technical bike leg and became dehydrated during the final run, allowing team-mate, Sophie Coleman, to run past and take the gold medal. Lois is a member of the UK Sport Lottery Funded British Triathlon Olympic Academy Squad.

Gillian Curr Gill grew up in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and competed at the World Triathlon Championships for the first time when she was 13 years old. She came 5th in the 13-15 Age Group at that event in 1995. She continued on to represent South Africa as a Junior Elite at World Championship level. Following high school and a move to the prestigious Stellenbosch University to pursue a 5 year law degree, Gillian put her triathlon dreams on ice, whilst continuing to run track . at 1500m. In 2010, whilst working full time in the city of London as a lawyer, Gill re-embarked on her triathlon career. Working and racing on the ITU circuit threw up huge challenges, and although exhausting, Gillian knew this . is what she wanted. At the end of 2010, following a tough year, Gillian put her legal career on hold to go full time as a professional triathlete, the first time she had the opportunity to . focus purely on her sport. The experience of 2010 coupled with her first solid off season of base training made for an exciting 2011. The experience proved better than imagined. The highlight was an opportunity to race on the Olympic course against the strongest women’s elite field of the year in WCS London leg. A credible 23rd in a field of the top 65 athletes after such a short time as a professional proved to Gill and her supporters she was on the right path towards 2012. Gillian proudly represented South Africa at the 2012 Games in London finishing 19th overall with the time . of 2:02:28.

B&Q UK Youth

UK Youth President Nigel Mansell with local young people and staff from the B&Q store in Blackpool

Youth Can Do It When They B&Q It Last year UK Youth had a committed but select group of competitors taking part in the London Triathlon - there were just three of them! This year the charity will have a rather more significant presence. Over 200 people will be raising money to fund their work, making it one of the best represented charities at the event. This incredible turnaround is due to the support and commitment of staff at B&Q, who are in the second year of a three-year partnership with UK Youth.

T

he partnership started in 2011 after staff at the home improvement chain were asked what kind of cause they wanted to get behind. The resounding answer was a charity that focused on young people in the UK so naturally the name UK Youth came up. The fact that the head offices of both organisations are just a few miles from each other in Hampshire sealed the partnership. UK Youth was founded in 1911 to support young women who were being denied any kind of education. It has since evolved to become a national organisation that enables all 10-24 year-olds to gain access to learning opportunities beyond mainstream school. Through a network of youth associations all over the country it reaches 750,000 young people each year, helping them to grow and develop and make a happy transition into adulthood. continued on page 24

B&Q UK Youth Martyn Phillips, CEO of B&Q says “We are extremely proud of the work we have done with UK Youth and the young people in this country. Learning practical skills and realising you have the ability to complete a hands-on project for yourself is a great confidence boost and is transferable to all aspects of life. There is a huge skills gap in this country with the younger generation lacking the skills their grandparents have when it comes to basic DIY skills. We recognise this and the work we are now doing . in communities across the UK is focused on young people, with whom we can share our expertise to make a positive difference. Taking part in the London Triathlon is just one of the many ways that we are honoured to help such . a wonderful charity.” Charlotte Hill, CEO UK Youth says “Naturally starting a relationship with a major national business like B&Q was very exciting for us. Even so you never quite know how the partnership will work out. We needn’t have worried, as their staff have been amazing, supporting our work in so many ways. This incredible turnout at the London Triathlon is the latest example of what B&Q are doing collectively and as individuals to help us support young people in the UK.”

Since the partnership launched B&Q has offered the charity great support both nationally and locally. One particularly successful initiative has ‘twinned’ stores with local youth clubs. The clubs are given the opportunity to undertake bucket collections in-store four times a year, to take advantage of product donations through the company’s waste donation scheme to help decorate and improve their facilities alongside expert advice and DIY training from B&Q staff. Among those to benefit is the Blair Drummond Youth Club in Stirling, Scotland. “Our young people really enjoyed being a part of this project and learning new skills. It’s a fantastic transformation and has given the young people a great sense of pride in completing this activity.” Catherine Killen, Chair, Blair Drummond . Youth Club. . We are extremely proud of the work we have done with UK Youth and the young people in this country. Learning practical skills and realising you have the ability to complete a hands-on project for yourself is a great confidence boost and is transferable to all aspects of life. B&Q UK Youth

UK Youth’s mission to support young people beyond mainstream education has spurred many of B&Q’s 30,000 staff into action. Already they have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds through golf days, cake sales and bike rides.

UK Youth’s mission to support young people beyond mainstream education has spurred many of B&Q’s 30,000 staff into action. Already they have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds through golf days, cake sales and bike rides. In December last year UK Youth ambassador, endurance cyclist and cancer survivor James Golding gave a passionate presentation at B&Q’s . head office and asked staff to consider taking . on the challenge of the London Triathlon in Olympic year. Martyn Philips B&Q’s CEO was first to sign up and as you’ll see here at the Excel Arena, several hundred B&Q staff are also rising to the challenge. Preparing for the triathlon, as a team or an individual, has meant that some members of the B&Q team are doing things they’ve never done before. Duncan Jones, from B&Q’s store operations team, recently took part in his first ever open-water swim. “To get ready I signed-up for my first one mile outdoor swim in Salford Quays. I started training four weeks beforehand after 15 years of just beach and pool swimming for fun. The training was tough and on race day there were plenty of nerves as well as seaweed, excitement and the Manchester rain. Nevertheless I managed to complete the swim in a very respectable 40 minutes. It was hard work but amazingly satisfying and I still feel rather proud of the achievement. I now can’t wait for the London Triathlon!”

The current economic climate means it’s an especially tough time for young people right now. Record levels of youth unemployment are just one indication of the challenges many of them are facing. While UK Youth has the expertise to support them the charity couldn’t do this work without the backing of authentically committed businesses like B&Q. Their staff have stepped up in so many ways, especially those who are putting their bodies on the line here at the London Triathlon. .

Race Information ‘Swim’ The Swim Wetsuit *A wetsuit is compulsory* A wetsuit is compulsory and it is you responsibility to ensure that you have one on race day.

*Do not use Petroleum based lubricants (e.g. vaseline) as these damage the suit* Swim Start

The Royal Victoria Dock

Having collected and attached your timing chip and racked your bike you should arrive at Swim Assembly a minimum of 20 minutes before your wave start time. (It will take approximately G R OSwim UP 5 minutes to walk from TransitionA NtoI M Gthe Assembly).

The water is tested against EU bathing standards; however we would still advise you to be in good health and to try and avoid swallowing the water, as swimmers may be more susceptible to infection through immune suppression.

At Swim Assembly you will be given a swim cap which identifies your wave start and given some important tips and advice.

Swim Safety

You may be in the water for up to 5 minutes

before your start. Use this time to assess the WWW.THELONDONTRIATHLON.CO.UK conditions, practise your swim technique and prepare mentally for the race.

The route will be marked by buoys and canoe lifeguards will be on hand to guide the wave. You should also identify tall landmarks that can keep you on course, so as to avoid weaving and swimming further than you need to!

Swim Exit

The water safety team, provided by Swim Safety Ltd, will consist of fully qualified lifeguards in kayaks and rescue boats as well as bank based lifeguards on pontoons. All lifeguards are members of either the BCU Lifeguards or Surf Lifesaving GB. If this is your first triathlon, or swimming is not your strongest discipline, we recommend that you position yourself towards the back or the side of the wave. It may add a few seconds to your time, but it will enable you to get into your rhythm and enjoy the swim more.

The swim exit pontoon dips into the water so you can swim onto it before standing up. Lifeguards will be on hand to help you out. Once you have exited the water you will need to remove your wetsuit, place it in a bag provided, and cover a short distance on foot to Transition.

*If you do get into difficulty, lie on your back and raise your arm; a canoe lifeguard will come to you and if necessary arrange a safety boat to take you to the water’s edge.*

There is a water station and a Gatorade Hydration Station on the way to Transition.

Swim Strokes

careful going up the steps to Be Transition as they can get wet.

Most people use front crawl or breast stroke. Back stroke is not permitted because it can be confused with someone indicating they are in difficulty.

*Goggles are compulsory*

The SFT Pool of Fame Just who are SFT helping?

How are we helping ?

Swim Coaches everywhere. SFT have produced the first British Swimming Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module covering Openwater Swimming. This module has been written by head coach DAN BULLOCK and will help Coaches prepare swimmers for Openwater racing and is a great endorsement and recognition of 10years of excellence in coaching.

• New drills and teaching methods • Regular features in much of the triathlon and open water swimming press • Online drills demos, relevant sessions and tips • 121 lessons • Openwater training • Fitness sessions • Weekend workshops • Training camps • Swimfest

Triathletes of all abilities 4 Kona Qualifiers for 2012 already, two 70.3 Worlds Qualifiers and numerous World and Europe AG medals through faster swimming. But It is not all about the fast guys though. “SFT helped me to go from being someone who dreamed of doing a triathlon but had a phobia of open water swimming, to coming out of the water at the Blenheim triathlon having swum a personal best. I felt ready, prepared and confident... in fact I couldn’t wait to get in the water” VICTORIA ROBERTSON

Triathlon Coaches We are swim Specialists on the STEVE TREW, JOE BEER and most recently Tridynamic Tri Camps. We are also pleased to have been appointed Openwater Coaches at the Triathlon centre of Excellence Club La Santa organising their first OW swim camps.

Speedo Back in 2010 we were appointed Advisory Coaches, conducting lessons and workshops on their behalf. Providing feedback, testing and research into products and wetsuits.

Drafting

..................... 22

No drafting is allowed, i.e. taking shelter behind or beside another competitor during the cycling leg of the race.

*Please make sure your kit is labelled so it can be identified!*

You will be able to remove your bike from Transition immediately after racing and you must remove your bike and equipment from Transition within 1.5 hours of finishing and prior to the venue closing times. The organisers reserve the right to remove any equipment left in transition beyond the above times. The Support Team will check the bike number against the wristband number before it is released.

*One of our biggest issues post-event is caused by people taking the wrong wetsuit from Transition, please take a few seconds to check that you have your own wetsuit, most are black and look very similar.* AN IMG GROUP
