Twenty years ago when Irfan Ahmad, a Pakistani expat in the UAE, had to settle for a McDonald’s fish burger in Paris because he couldn’t find a restaurant serving halal meat, an idea was born. It laid the foundation for Irhal, an Arabic/ English Islamic travel guide. Irhal won the Best Islamic Economy Venture award at last year's Dubai Silicon Oasis Entrepreneur Day.
» Can you explain the concept behind Irhal.com and Irhal app? I visited many cities with my family and
always wanted a travel guide that could cater to my needs as a tourist and practising Muslim. With Irhal.com, a Muslim visitor Irfan Ahmad,CEO of Irhal to Paris or Beijing or Sydney can easily explore, while knowing where to go for a halal meal. The Irhal app is an Arabic/
English travel application with city guides to more than 90 destinations. A GPS-enabled map shows users the nearest halal restaurant or mosque, while a compass points in the direction of Makkah. With 25,000 people currently using the app, Irhal can be downloaded on both iOS and Android for free.

We get about 200,000 visitors to Irhal.com every month, 65 per cent of whom are from the GCC, mainly Saudi Arabia and the UAE; 70 per cent go to the Arabic section of the site. » What do Muslim travellers primarily look for when they plan vacations? There is a misconception that Muslim tourists prefer to travel to Islamic countries only. While Malaysia and Indonesia were the hotspots for Muslims, they now compete with other destinations. If it was just the halal food and an Islamic environment that determined the choice of a destination, then these countries would have always remained the top choices for Muslim travellers. » What is the potential for growth in the Muslim travel segment? According to a recent study conducted by Thomson Reuters, the Muslim travel segment is worth $140 billion annually and is the fastest-growing sector in the tourism industry. » How important is mobile technology in the tourism sector? 70 per cent of visitors to our website use smartphones to access it, so the penetration of mobile technology is significantly high in the region. I’ve lost count of the number of people who have told me Nepal is their favourite country. I’m firmly among those counting the intoxicating nation in my top 10, but then I’m a mountainphile and the Himalayas run down Nepal like a great spine. Just 200km west of the thronging capital Kathmandu — where most people arrive — Pokhara is Nepal’s second-largest city, clinging to the sides of Phewa Lake, glassy clear and fed by glaciers. The first thing you

notice is the fresh, pure air stinging your lungs. Pokhara has become the starting point for Himalayan adventures. Six of the world’s highest mountains stand in majestic sentry, enticing travellers upwards. Mountaineers, trekkers, rafters, paragliders, bikers, kayakers, cavers and climbers all pass through its gates every year in search of highaltitude thrills. I am one of them, in Pokhara to take on the modest four-day trek to Poon Hill. You can go it alone — just
follow the hoards of tourists — but I opted to support the local economy a bit and trekked with Dream Nepal Treks & Expedition, a tiny outfit run by experienced local Sherpa, Tilak Gurung. He dreamed of joining the British Sherpa military forces but competition is fierce and when it didn’t happen, he turned, like many, to the mountains for a living. Poon Hill is an entry trek, but the journey doesn’t lack breathtaking vistas. It winds uphill along a paved

It’s elegant white lines and longrange views make it a must-see.

Yet, you don’t have to climb mountains to enjoy Nepal. your terrace, if you choose. But mostly, tourists rush out of the place snagging the equipment and guides they need for their treks and high-tail it to the hills. I decide to pause here a while first, certain that this staging post must have a lot to offer in its own right. The bus ride from Kathmandu, gruelling, bone-jolting but picturesque, drops me in the city mid-afternoon. I take a walk down to the lakeside, the traveller mothership, to get acclimatised to my new temporary home. Stopping for a delicious ginger and honey
tea, into which I squeeze tiny green lemons the size of gooseberries as instructed by the beaming restaurateur (when it comes to smiles, Thailand isn’t a patch on Nepal), I examine my surroundings. Buffaloes stand in the middle of the street with cars threading around them, like rocks in a stream. Eagles soar overhead in the sharp-focus sky, lifted by invisible updrafts. Kites quiver above the skyline anchored by grinning kids, dressed in woollen hats and improbably few clothes by my less-than-hardy

Western standards. Ah, this is the life, I think. In the morning, I resolve to take a trip to Sarangkot in a taxi, the best place for appreciating sunrise over the mountains without lacing up a boot. Vicarious mountaineers can stop at the International Mountain Museum as they roll back down the hill, and marvel at the exploits of pioneering explorers. In the afternoon, I cruise slowly around the lakeside shops and markets. There is a large Tibetan population in Nepal, refugees from the 1959 uprising

GOOD EATS If you’ve been up in the Annapurna for days, you’ll have worked up a great appetite. Head to Neptalia for delicious pizzas or Moondance draped in fairy lights for an international menu. To sample Nepali fare, Almond Café is popular with the locals. Don’t leave Nepal without trying buffalo momos (dumplings) and dal bhat, lentils and rice often served with vegetables. Butter tea? That's more of an acquired taste…

that exiled the Dalai Lama; cultural trips run out to their settlement villages. They’re skilled artisans, so I buy some jewellery, a large moonstone pendant and an intricately designed ring. Finally, I retire to a café. Life floats gently by as if separated from the normal space-time continuum. I enjoy the simple pleasure of reading a book, glancing up only to admire the peaks. Come evening, I watch little rowboats venture out on the lake for ringside seats to a blazing sunset reflected on the mirror-smooth water. Many come to Nepal for the high road, but the low road, my friends, is every bit as lovely.

Almost a decade later, phase one of the five-phase project is close to realisation — an extraordinary accomplishment, located 17km from Abu Dhabi. Visit and you'll be able to see experimental, cutting-edge architecture and experience one of the world's first driverless car systems. The subterranean personal rapid transit (PRT) system wouldn’t look out
of place in a sci-fi movie. Electrically driven and operated by GPS, the rationale behind building the network underground was to free up the streets as an exclusively pedestrian environment. It also means that streets can be narrower, shaded from the intense heat by buildings and naturally cooled by wind towers. "Every visitor I’ve had always says, 'Isn't this a great place to be.'," says the city’s British design manager, Chris Chi Lon Wan. "Most people say they feel cooler and more comfortable walking through Masdar than on the same day in other parts of downtown Abu Dhabi."

As with other environmental buzz words, such as eco-friendly, green and energy efficient, the exact definition of the term sustainable is open to debate. This point isn't lost on Wan, who explains that following the initial remit to create the world’s most sustainable city, Masdar's interpretation of what constitutes sustainability has evolved into a multi-faceted idea. "We are in a position at Masdar to define our own path," he says. The current consensus at Masdar is that a sustainable city can be broken into three quantifiable areas: community, commercial viability and innovation. The community aspect
relates to creating an environment that meets all of the needs of its citizens, ranging from health care and education to retail and housing. By creating an autonomous community where most places can be reached either by using public transport or on foot, the need for cars is eradicated and the city is therefore environmentally more sustainable. The second necessity for sustainability is related to the economic feasibility of developments. A common belief is that Masdar is an expensive project funded by an incredibly wealthy government. It transpires that this is not
entirely the case. "At the beginning, we had some amazing support from our major shareholder, the [governmentowned] Mubadala Company," says Wan. "But as soon as we were established, every project that we do now has strict investment bars that we have to achieve, and if we don’t, the project does not go ahead. At the end of the day, we are very clear that if a project is not economically sustainable then it is not sustainable." The final consideration is innovation. At the heart of the city is the Masdar Institute. A postgraduate university and research facility, the institute was

built with the intention of attracting the finest scientific talent to the region as well as developing the skills of the UAE workforce. Ask Wan what aspect of the project he is most proud of and he cites the building that houses the Middle East headquarters of Siemens that opened in 2014. For Wan, the satisfaction

comes from the fact that the building is a culmination of the lessons learnt since the project began in 2006. "It's actually very easy to make a building that reduces energy and water consumption because all of the technology is there," he says. "But to be able to do that and make your building commercially viable and also profitable — therein lies the challenge." With the Siemens building, Wan and his team achieved their goals. "It has a number of good environmental credentials. If you compare it to a
typical office building in Abu Dhabi, the Siemens building uses around 60-65 per cent less energy for the same floor room area." Describing the building as his first truly successful creation, Wan says, "The tenants inside were extremely happy at the level of comfort, we are very happy with the building’s energy performance and our shareholders are also very happy because the profit that’s been generated on the project has exceeded our initial expectations." The Masdar dream has not been without its challenges. The

2008 economic downturn had a detrimental effect on the speed of the development, while the value of the land that had been earmarked for construction increased unexpectedly at the same time. This forced Masdar to diversify into projects such as the solar energy plant in the Liwa Desert to fund the expansion. The figures behind the Masdar vision are indeed ambitious. The team hopes to eventually attract 50,000 workers and 40,000 residents to the city. This is a goal that Wan believes can be achieved between 2025 and 2030, although he concedes that the rate of development, as with all viable enterprises, is subject to market forces. Regardless of his optimism, one of the questions that Wan admits he's often asked is what will happen if the whole plan fails? The 50-year old design manager’s response is unequivocal. "To me, the only failure is not starting. "We're building things, seeing how things work and taking those lessons forward into the future."

Persian PERSUASION Dubai-based Iranian-American chef Ariana Bundy discusses the culinary heritage of Iran and what makes it so special
She was born in Iran, studied in Switzerland and has lived in New York, Paris, London and Dubai. But nothing quite prepared Ariana Bundy for the extraordinary journey she undertook to prepare for her cookery show designed to put the delicate flavours of Iran on the global map — a show that would ultimately air on Nat Geo People as Ariana’s Persian Kitchen. The award-winning Iranian-American chef and author has walked the road less travelled across Iran to glean its gastronomic delights and experience the most authentic taste of its homegrown specialities for her eight-episode show. From the old city of Yazd and the lush pastures of the Caspian region, to the majestic former Persian capital of Isfahan and the wilderness of the saffronproducing regions in Khorasan, Bundy scoured traditional bazaars for ingredients, mingled with
farmers and traders and broke bread with local cooks across the country to unravel the culinary secrets of Iran and its people. "It was a spectacular adventure across a vast and versatile country, visiting many destinations I had never been to before,” says Bundy. “The old cities and small towns are treasure troves of culinary delights." Each 25-minute episode saw Bundy recreating the recipes she picked up from the far-flung corners of Iran at her home in Dubai, using available ingredients and shortcuts to create exotic feasts. “As the show was funded by my husband and me, we shot at a very leisurely pace over the harvest seasons of pomegranate, rose and saffron,” says Bundy, who lives between San Francisco and Dubai. The soft-spoken chef earned her culinary credentials at Le Cordon Bleu and Le Notre in Paris,

Why the Kenyan capital transcends its status as simply a safari stopover TEXT BY PETER FEELY
Nairobi is known for being the gateway to some of the planet’s most exotic wildlife — especially this month when there's a chance to witness the thousands of wildebeest complete their migration from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara nature reserve. Abuzz with a vibrant street culture, where art and music intrinsically play a key role in society, the city is a melting pot of classes and nationalities. The elite are known as Wabenzi — a Swahili slang term for their ubiquitous ownership of MercedesBenzes — having benefited from the Kenyan capital's evolution into a financial centre for East Africa. While Nairobi is often just a stopover for travellers en route to the Rift Valley or the Masai Mara, it’s a destination that is unquestionably fascinating.

Afternoon If you’re a fan of the movie Out of Africa or familiar with Karen Blixen’s memoirs, there’s a chance to experience the extraordinary woman's Kenyan stomping ground. Blixen lived just outside of Nairobi from 1917-1931 and her home, at the foot of the Ngong Hills, is now a museum. Set in beautiful grounds, it's a timely representation of both the country's colonial past and a reminder of its protagonist's adventurous and unconventional life. An equally inspirational female from Nairobi’s past is Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who in 1977 founded an elephant sanctuary in memory of her husband. Evening Carnivore is a Nairobi institution where you can choose from an array of exotic meats. Describing itself as “the beast of a feast,” the dining venue offers meateaters a choice of unconventionally exotic cuts ranging from crocodile and camel to ostrich — all enjoyed on zebrastriped chairs. To sample some of the city’s infamously lively nightlife scene, head to the Brew Bistro & Lounge. With a live band or DJ on most nights and, as the name implies, top-quality drinks, it may be Latin-themed but the Nairobians love it. For a more colonial Kenyan nightcap, the Exchange Bar at the Stanley Hotel offers a faintly regal, if more sedate, version of Old World refinement.

DAY 2
Morning A slightly off-centre take on what most folk envisage when they picture a nature reserve, Nairobi National Reserve is set against the incongruous backdrop of the city's skyline. Home to the world's most concentrated population of endangered black rhinoceros, the sanctuary was also Kenya’s very first nature reserve when it opened in 1946. The park, which covers an area of 117 square km, is home to lions, leopards and buffalo — although it has insufficient woodland to sustain elephants as well. Attracting 120,000 visitors a year, it may not offer the epic enormity of the Masai Reserve but with 450 bird species and 500 different kinds of tree, it remains an important environmental asset. Nairobi itself is one of Africa's fastest-growing cities and the conflict between human needs and protecting the wildlife is becomingly increasingly significant. While the past few months have seen the confirmation of a Chinese-sponsored railway cutting through the park, the section of track in question will be raised above ground level, allowing the reserve animals to pass safely underneath — an auspicious compromise between the needs of the country’s growing population for improved infrastructure and the welfare of Kenya’s wildlife.

SHAIKHA JAWAHER HONOURED FOR HER HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS

Her Highness Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, was recently named the Golden Humanitarian Personality of the Year by the Watani Emarat Foundation. The award was given in recognition of her contribution to humanitarian work locally and internationally, as well as her support for cancer patients and refugee children worldwide. The award ceremony, themed This is What Shaikh Zayed Loves, was organised in Dubai on July 2 to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the death of the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father. Held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, the award was initiated two years ago to honour Emiratis who reflect charitable values. “It is a great honour for any of us to have their name attached to an award that commemorates a pillar of humanitarian work and the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the great leader from whom we learnt love for humanity, philanthropy and helping the underprivileged,” Shaikha Jawaher said upon receiving the award. “I consider this honour to be a new responsibility and challenge. I ask Allah to guide me to continue my humanitarian work, mobilise local and international support and develop strategies to help all needy and vulnerable people worldwide. I wish
to stand by their side and lend them a helping hand, particularly refugees, cancer patients and vulnerable women.” Shaikha Jawaher stressed that the humanitarian approach laid down by the late Shaikh Zayed and continued by the present leadership has resulted in the UAE being ranked as the world’s biggest donor of foreign aid relative to its gross national income for the second time last year. Known for her commitment to helping the needy, the Shaikha’s humanitarian initiatives have been making a tremendous difference to
Hospital Egypt 57357. Its authorities acknowledged Shaikha Jawaher’s assistance and named a new wing after her. At its opening, she called for free treatment and psychological support for children with cancer globally. Considering that 80 per cent of children with cancer live in developing countries (WHO estimates), Shaikha Jawaher has highlighted the need to develop common strategies to protect the lives of thousands of children around the world and curb the negative effects of the disease on them, their families and society. As the i n te r n at i o n a l Ambassador for Paediatric Cancer for UICC, Shaikha Jawaher has attended various events. Last April, she participated in the 11th African Conference of International Society fo r Pa e d i at r i c Oncology in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and visited the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon in 2013 where she interacted with patients and presented a library of books to the hospital. Last year, she launched Heroes Bag at the New York Presbyterian Cancer Center, an initiative by which children with cancer are given special bags containing books, toys and gifts. Through FoCP, Shaikha Jawaher has linked the UICC Childhood Cancer programme with an important regional initiative called Salam ya Seghar, a fund that was initiated in 2010 for the health and welfare of Palestinian children. While FoCP has provided treatment to 82 cancer patients during the first half of this year, more than 1,300 patients have been benefited from its efforts so far. The charity has actively focused on raising awareness about the risks of cancer and the need for early detection. The FoCP has carried out 30 awareness events in the first half of 2015, apart from running several programmes aimed at providing psychological and emotional support to cancer patients and their families.

This has made her one of the Arab world’s most influential personalities and led to her appointment as UNHCR Eminent Advocate for refugee children in 2013, International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) as well as International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC. Owing to her concern, commitment and efforts over two decades, we can call her the Mother Teresa of the Arab world. In 1999, Shaikha Jawaher founded Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), a charity dedicated to spreading public awareness about the disease and providing all forms of assistance to patients and their families across the UAE. Last May, she donated Dh5 million to the Children’s Cancer

NEW SERVICES TO DAMMAM Air Arabia Jordan has announced the start of direct flights between Amman and Dammam, the carrier’s fifth destination. The largest city in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, Dammam is a major centre of industry, and home to King Abdul Aziz Sea Port, one of the busiest commercial ports in the Kingdom. The operator flies twice a week to Dammam, in addition to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, and Kuwait City in Kuwait.

STRONG FINANCIAL RESULTS Air Arabia posted a net profit of Dh 237 million in the first half of 2015, ending June 30. The turnover for the period reached Dh 1.75 billion, in line with the corresponding period of 2014. Air Arabia flew 3.6 million passengers in the first half, which is an increase of nine per cent over the same period last year. The airline’s average seat load factor – or passengers carried as a percentage of available seats –during the period stood at a high 79 per cent.
NEW FLIGHTS FROM SHARJAH TO TABUK Air Arabia has started to operate regular flights to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, its 13th destination in the Kingdom and 114 th globally. The airline operates three flights a week to Tabuk from Sharjah International Airport.
Commenting on the new service, Adel Ali, Group Chief Executive Officer, Air Arabia, said: “The strengthening of our route network in Saudi Arabia demonstrates the significance we attach to the Kingdom.” Inhabited by more than half a million people, Tabuk is the capital city of the Tabuk Region in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

أداء مالي قوي أعلنت العربية للطيران عن تحقيق صافي أرباح بمبلغ 237مليون درهم إماراتي للنصف األول المنتهي في 30يونيو .2015 ووصلت إيرادات الشركة خالل النصف األول 2015إلى 1.75مليار درهم إماراتي ،وهو ما ينسجم مع نتائجها في الفترة نفسها من عام .2014ونقلت العربية للطيران 3.6 مليون مسافر على متن طائراتها خالل النصف األول لعام 2015بزيادة قدرها %9 مقارنة بنفس الفترة من عام .2014واستق ّر معدل إشغال المقاعد -أي نسبة عدد المسافرين إلى عدد المقاعد المتوفرة عند معدالت مرتفعة بلغت %79خاللالنصف األول .2015

ال يقتصر التزام العربية للطيران بتوفير
في القاهرة سعيًا منهم للمشاركة في

أعلنت العربية للطيران األردن عن إطالق

رحالت مباشرة بين العاصمة عمان ومدينة

الدمام في المملة العربية السعودية، لتصبح بذلك الوجهة الخامسة للشركة.

ترخيص األطقم الجوية ليوفر تدريبًا متعمقًا
دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة برامج تدريبية
في مجاالت مثل عمليات األطقم الجوية وخدمة
من الطراز العالمي في مجاالت ترخيص
العمالء والمظهر والهندام .وتضم أحدث المرافق
األطقم الجوية والتدريب على أجهزة محاكاة
واألجهزة ،بما فيها جهاز محاكاة الطيران لطائرة
الطيران وخدمات الضيافة.

فترة الصباح خالفــً للصــورة النمطيــة للمحميــات الطبيعيــة تقــع محميــة نيروبــي الوطنيــة أمــام خلفيــة ألفــق المدينــة بأبنيتهــا العاليــة تظهــر تضاربــً بيــن البيئــة الطبيعــة والعمــران الحضــري .كانــت المحميــة األولــى فــي كينيــا مــن نوعهــا ،وتــم تجمــع افتتاحهــا عــام ،1946وتحتضــن أكبــر ٍ لوحيــد القــرن األســود المهــدد باإلنقــراض. تغطــي الحديقــة مســاحة 117كيلــو متــر مربــع، وهــي موطــن ألنــواع عديــدة مــن الحيوانــات مثــل األســود والفهــود والجواميــس ،إال أنهــا ال تحــوي غابــات بالكثافــة المالئمــة الســتيعاب الفيلــة. تجــذب المحميــة حوالــي 120،000زائــر ســنويًا، وبالرغــم مــن صغــر حجمهــا إذا مــا قورنــت بمحميــة ماســاي فهــي تضــم 450فصيلــة مــن الطيــور و 500فصيلــة مختلفــة مــن األشــجار وتعتبــر كنــزًا بيئيــً هامــً .وتعــد مدينــة نيروبــي بحــد ذاتهــا مــن مــدن أفريقيــا األســرع نمــوًا لتصبــح قضيــة التضــارب بيــن احتياجــات التنميــة البشــرية وحمايــة الحيــاة البريــة علــى ـة مــن األهميــة .وقــد شــهدت األشــهر ـة عاليـ ٍ درجـ ٍ ســكة مخطــط لخــط القليلــة الماضيــة اعتمــاد ٍ ٍ حديديــة تمــر خــال المحميــة برعايــة صينيــة، ولكــن ذلــك الجــزء مــن الســكة ســيكون مرتفعــً عــن أرضيــة الحديقــة ليتيــح للحيوانــات المــرور اآلمــن مــن تحتهــا .تشــكل هــذه التســوية ســابقةً هامــة للتوفيــق بيــن احتياجــات ســكان البــاد المتناميــة والتــي تتطلــب تحســين البنيــة التحتيــة فــي الوقــت الــذي يتــم فيــه

ولــدت أريانــا فــي إيــران وتابعــت دراســتها فــي سويســرا وأقامــت
مــع زوجــي ،فقــد صورنــا الحلقــات بتــروي لنغطــي مواســم
فــي نيويــورك وباريــس ولنــدن ودبــي .وبالرغــم مــن ذلــك لــم
محاصيــل الرمــان والــورد والزعفــران». التحقــت الشــيف أريانــا بمعهــد لــي كــوردون بلــو ومعهــد لــي
رحلــة شــيقة فــي تحضيــر يخطــر علــى بالهــا أنهــا ســتخوض ٍ برنامــج للطبــخ صمــم مــن أجــل نشــر نكهــات إيــران المميــزة علــى

كأفضــل كتــاب طهــي فــي جوائــز نقابــة الكتــاب فــي المملكــة
فــي األســواق التقليديــة بحثــً عــن المكونــات والتقــت بالمزارعيــن
المتحــدة عــام .2013
والتجــار المحلييــن وتناولــت الطعــام مــع طهــاة محلييــن فــي
«لطالمــا شــعرت أن المأكــوالت اإليرانيــة لــم يتــم اكتشــافها
جميــع أنحــاء البــاد للكشــف عــن أســرار الطهــي اإليرانــي.

نكهــات وألــوان رائعــة .إن النظــام الغذائــي اإليرانــي المتــوازن ليــس
دقيقــة تقــوم أريانــا بتقديــم الوصفــات التــي جمعتهــا مــن
مجــرد لحــم مشــوي يوضــع علــى طبقــات الــرز المعطــر؛ إنــه مصمــم
مختلــف أصقــاع البــاد فــي اســتوديو التصويــر فــي منزلهــا فــي دبــي مســتخدمةً المكونــات المتوفــرة وبعــض الطــرق المختصــرة
علــى مبــدأ أننــا إذا قمنــا باإلختيــارات الصحيحــة بالنســبة إلــى المكونــات الســاخنة والبــاردة والتوابــل ،فإننــا بذلــك نخلــق حالــة
البتــكار والئــم متميــزة« .بمــا أننــي قمــت بتمويــل إنتــاج البرنامــج

يعتقــد أن البنــاء يجســد خالصــة العبــر والــدروس التــي تــم تعلمهــا منــذ بدايــة المشــروع عــام ،2006وبالتالــي فهــو قصــة نجــاح .ويقــول" :فــي الحقيقــة مــن الســهل جــدًا أن نشــيد بنــاء يخفــض مــن اســتهالك الطاقــة والمــاء نظــرًا لتوفــر كافــة التقنيــات .ولكــن التحــدي يكمــن فــي القــدرة علــى القيــام بذلــك وأن تجعــل البنــاء ذو جــدوى تجاريــة ومشــروع رابــح أيضــً". فيمــا يتعلــق ببنــاء شــركة ســيمنز نجــح الســيد وان وفريقــه بتحقيــق أهدافهــم .ويعقــب: بعــدد مــن المؤهــات البيئيــة "(يتمتــع البنــاء) ٍ الممتــازة .فــإذا قارنتهــا ببنــاء مكاتــب تقليــدي فــي أبوظبــي نجــد أن بنــاء ســيمنز يســتخدم طاقــة أقــل بـــ 65-60بالمئــة لمســاحة مماثلــة". باتجاه عقارب الساعة من األعلى :تعتمد مصدر على الطاقة المتجددة ،مثل الطاقة الشمسية؛ تم توظيف أساليب العمارة التقليدية في تصميم األبنية؛ معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا؛ منظومة السيارات من دون سائق تحت األرض تتيح لشوارع مصدر أن تبقى بيئةً حصريةً للمشاة؛ النمط المعماري الرائد يلقي الظالل على الشوارع ليساهم في تخفيض درجات الحرارة
ويضيــف أن البنــاء هــو أول ابتكاراتــه الناجحــة بالفعــل قائــ ً ا" :توصلنــا إلــى بنــاء يقطنــه مســتأجر فــي غايــة الســعادة والرضــا فيمــا ٌ يتعلــق بمســتوى الراحــة ،ونحــن ســعداء جــدًا بــأداء البنــاء مــن ناحيــة اســتهالك الطاقــة (الــذي يتــم قياســه ومتابعتــه) ،وحاملــو األســهم أيضــً فــي غايــة الســعادة ألن األربــاح التــي حققهــا
أن مصــدر هــو مشــروع عالــي التكلفــة تمولــه
المشــروع فاقــت توقعاتنــا المبدئيــة".
حكومــة ثريــة للغايــة .ولكــن الوقائــع أثبتــت أن

للبنــاء .أجبــرت هــذه التطــورات إدارة مصــدر
عقــب التأســيس ،كان هنــاك شــروط اســتثمارية
لتنويــع اســتثماراتها بتأســيس مشــاريع مثــل
صارمــة لــكل مشــروع يجــب علينــا االلتــزام بهــا
محطــة الطاقــة الشمســية فــي صحــراء ليــوا
وتحقيقهــا ،وفــي حــال لــم يحصــل ذلــك ،يتــم
لتمويــل توســع المشــروع.
مصطلحــً متعــدد الجوانــب" :نســتطيع ،نحــن
إلغــاء المشــروع .فــي نهايــة المطــاف ،أصبــح
إن األرقــام التــي تأمــل رؤيــة مصــدر فــي
فــي مصــدر ،أن نخــط مســارًا خاصــً بنــا" .هنالــك
جليــً لنــا أنــه إن لــم يحقــق المشــروع االســتدامة

أمــا الناحيــة األخيــرة فهــي االبتــكار .فــي
المدينــة .ويعتقــد وان أن هــذا الهــدف يمكــن
المجتمــع والجــدوى التجاريــة واإلبتــكار .يتعلــق
صميــم مدينــة مصــدر هنــاك معهــد مصــدر
تحقيقــه بيــن عامــي 2025و ،2030مــع أنــه يعتــرف
الجانــب المجتمعــي بخلــق بيئــة تلبــي كافــة
للعلــوم والتكنولوجيــا ،وهــو جامعــة للدراســات
أن وتيــرة التطــور ،كمــا هــي فــي جميــع المشــاريع
احتياجــات مواطنيهــا ،مــن الصحــة والتعليــم
العليــا ومركــز للبحــوث .تــم تأســيس المعهــد
الحيويــة ،تخضــع إلــى تقلبــات األســواق .وبغــض
إلــى توفــر منافــذ تجــارة التجزئــة والســكن.
مــن أجــل جــذب أفضــل الخبــرات العلميــة إلــى
النظــر عــن تفاؤلــه يقــر الســيد وان أن أحــد
مكتــف عندمــا يتــم إنشــاء مجتمــع مســتقل ٍ ذاتيــً حيــث يمكــن الوصــول إلــى أغلــب األماكــن
المنطقــة وتطويــر مهــارات الكــوادر البشــرية
األســئلة التــي تتــردد علــى مســامعه مثيـرًا هــو:
فــي اإلمــارات العربيــة المتحــدة.
مــاذا ســيحدث إذا فشــلت جميــع المخططــات؟
بواســطة النقــل العــام أو ســيرًا علــى األقــدام،
يستشــهد الســيد وان بالبنــاء الــذي يحتضــن
هنــا يجيــب مديــر التصميــم ذو العقــود الخمســة
تســقط الحاجــة إلــى الســيارات ،وهكــذا تصبــح المدينــة أكثــر اســتدامةً مــن الناحيــة البيئيــة.
المقــر الرئيســي لشــركة ســيمنز فــي الشــرق
نحــو جــازم وواضــح" :الفشــل مــن العمــر علــى ٍ
األوســط والــذي تــم افتتاحــه عــام 2014كمثــال
الوحيــد ،بالنســبة لــي ،هــو أن ال نبــدأ .إننــا نبنــي
ويتعلــق الشــرط الثانــي لالســتدامة بالجــدوى
علــى جانــب مــن جوانــب المشــروع الــذي يعتبــره
أشــياء ونــرى مــا هــو األفضــل واألكثــر فاعليــة
االقتصاديــة للمشــاريع .هنــاك اعتقــاد ســائد
مصــدر فخــر لــه .بالنســبة لــه يشــعر بالرضــا ألنــه

تــم إنشــاء الشــبكة تحــت األرض فــي ســبيل تخصيــص الشــوارع لتصبــح بيئــةً حصريــةً
مــن بعــض األماكــن األخــرى فــي وســط مدينــة
ملموســً .بعــد مــا يقــارب العقــد أصبحــت
للمشــاة؛ ولذلــك فوائــد ملموســة ،فالشــوارع
وعلــى غــرار الكلمــات الرنانــة الشــائعة
المرحلــة األولــى مــن المراحــل الخمــس لتنفيــذ المشــروع قريبــة المنــال ،مــا يعــد إنجــازًا هائــ ً ا.
تصبــح أضيــق وتســتفيد مــن الظــل الــذي تلقيــه األبنيــة ليحميهــا مــن شــدة الحــرارة إضافــةً إلــى
