ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE 13-year old Dubai-based Canadian-Algerian actor and playwright Mohamed Abid talks about his passion for theatre and writing as he takes the stage at Dubai’s prestigious literature festival this month TEXT BY CHIRANTI SENGUPTA
A student of American School of Dubai, Mohamed Abid’s work was recently showcased at the 2016 Short+Sweet Theatre Festival. Apart from writing two plays, he has starred in three musicals and a short film, The Wonderful Tale of Badr and The Great Najooma, which will be hitting the international film festival circuit this year. Here’s what the youngest participant at this year’s Emirates Lit Fest told us about his works.
» What sparked your interest in acting and writing? I discovered my passion for acting when I first performed on stage in Grade 4. After performing in several plays and a short movie in the past four years, I have started to combine my interests in acting with writing plays and screenplays.

» Tell us about the plays that you have written so far. I have written a screenplay and two plays so far, and I am currently working on my third play. While my first play was based on the theme of fantasy, I have since turned my attention to comedies. One defining characteristic of my plays is that they often have unpredictable circumstances, which are intrinsically hilarious.
» What response have you received so far? Despite the fact that my works are relatively new, I have been accepted into the Emirates Festival of Literature and Short+Sweet Theatre Festival in Dubai. I think this speaks a lot about the public response.
» What is the most challenging part of being a writer? The most challenging part is not to give up in the middle. We often conceive ideas that simply do not work, create characters that do not fit in, and write plays that appear not very interesting. A good writer must overcome these challenges and not give up on his ideas. » How do you balance your studies and writing and acting? Although I have never found my studies particularly difficult, I prioritise my activities carefully. On days when I am free, I focus on writing. If I have an exam, I simply leave my writing for later. I believe that writing with a free mind produces better results than writing under stress.
» Would you like to pursue a career in writing and acting later? My passion has always been in performing
arts, and I would definitely love to pursue a career that involves writing and acting.
» Who are the biggest inspirations for your career? J.K Rowling is an inspiration. It is amazing how she turned a stray thought during a train ride into something so powerful that it impacted millions of people around the world. I also admire Australian playwright Alex Broun for the way he reaches out to his audience with his 10-minute plays. » Who is your favourite actor? Playwright? My favourite actor is Leonardo DiCaprio. I love the way he immerses himself into a role, which, in my opinion, is the hardest part of being an actor. I enjoy reading the works of American writer Arthur Miller. » Finally, could you give us some information on your session at the Festival of Literature? The session, titled “The Playwrights of Tomorrow”, will be held on March 12 at the InterContinental Hotel, where I will read out excerpts from my plays and answer questions about my work. I am looking forward to sharing the stage with my mentor Alex Broun, who will curate the session.

Kashgar is a peculiar proposition. A remote trading town on the Silk Route in China’s Xinjiang province, it’s been a stop-off point for more than 2,000 years. Yet, in the last decade, many of the city’s predominantly Muslim, Uyghur population, have been relocated and most of the ancient adobe mud buildings in Old Kashgar have been bulldozed. In a curious attempt to preserve Kashgar’s historic legacy, the Chinese then rebuilt swathes of the Old Town in a style that was sympathetic to the original architecture. The results are a little odd. While the authorities have sensibly opted to keep Islamic architectural cues and have restricted the buildings to two or three storeys, in an attempt to retain the atmosphere of the old streets, alleyways have been widened to allow space for cars and dirt tracks have been tarmacked. There’s a whiff of sanitised theme park to the place now. In the Chinese’s defence they have left a small section of Old Kashgar untouched – allowing you to experience the true heart of the city as it once was. Disneyland modernity and UNESCOoffending redevelopment hasn’t managed to kill off all aspects of Old Kashgar though. The streets still throng with Uyghur traders and carry the distinct aroma of barbequed lamb, served with wood-fired flat breads (deliciously sprinkled with morsels of black sesame seeds and garlic). The food reinforces the nomadic heritage of the city’s inhabitants – far more familiar to Central Asia than Chinese cuisine. Part of the reason for this is Kashgar’s geographical location. Nearer to Kazakhstan’s Almaty and Pakistan’s Islamabad than Shanghai or Beijing, the city has been under the rule of a number of civilisations over the years, governed by Turkic, Mongol, and Tibetan empires prior to the rebuilding frenzy under the Chinese. Without question, the quintessential Kashgar experience is to snag a warm flatbread from the street and head to the Sunday market just outside the city. While it may have been running for literally hundreds and hundreds years, it would appear that the only form of
regulation that evolved over the aeons is a form of organised chaos. Despite the apparent mayhem, if you’re in the market for some livestock – or more specifically a sheep, goat, yak, horse or donkey, you’ll be in the right place. Most of the animals are secured, bunched and tied together so, as you can imagine, there’s a reasonable amount of resistance, as they squirm and tussle with their braying neighbours. The nationality of your wily trader can be determined by the different style of hats, with most Uyghurs opting for funky and elaborately embroidered,

colourful pillbox-style headgear and the eye-catchingly tall, white and black equivalents, adorning the craniums of their Kyrgyz counterparts. The precious Uyghur culture and their relative autonomy sits precariously against the wave of modern globalisation coming from the government in Beijing. It’s the sort of destination where, if you want to experience the unique markets and melting pot of traders – complete with their wonderful hats – it’s a good idea to head there sooner, rather than later.

KASHGAR BAZAAR Purportedly the largest market in all of Central Asia, dating back almost 2,000 years, the livestock market only takes place on Sunday, but other goods are available throughout the week. Expect to find everything from nuts and spices to fabrics, silks, pots and even traditional instruments. Houseboating Kerala’s backwaters A cruise along the palm-lined waterways in a kettuvallam, or houseboat, is an
unforgettable way to explore Kerala’s backwaters, a chain of picturesque lagoons, lakes and rivulets that run parallel to the coast. Kettuvallams are the traditional hand-crafted barges which were first used to transport rice and spices to Kochi from Kuttanad through the state’s numerous canals and lagoons. Today, they have been transformed into floating houses to ferry tourists through the backwaters. While Alleppey and Kumarakom

are the popular gateways to the backwaters, there are several other stretches, especially around Kollam and Valiyaparamba, which offer a secluded, less touristy experience. Every March, Dubai holds one of the most respected art fairs in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, welcoming a large number of international artists to the UAE, alongside a host of local talents. Art Dubai 2016, which promises to be bigger than ever, will showcase works by more than 500 artists from 70 countries, covering a wide range of different art forms, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, video, photography and performance. Largest gallery line-up to date Art Dubai 2016 features a diverse lineup of 94 galleries from 40 countries, presenting works by established and emerging artists. Several countries, including Georgia, Ghana, Lithuania, Oman, Palestine, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, are represented in the gallery line-up for the first time, as well as a number of new galleries from Europe, the USA, India and Turkey. This year the fair presents more UAE galleries than ever before - 15 booths in total - illustrating the vibrant state of the local art scene.
Focus Philippines Marker, Art Dubai’s thematic gallery programme, turns the spotlight on the Philippines this year. The first such showcase of the country at any major global fair, Manila-based artist Ringo Bunoan is curating an exhibition, that highlights the exciting, independent art scene in Manila. This multidisciplinary exhibition features paintings, soft sculptures, works on paper, textiles, photographs and films by a diverse group of artists, including Roberto Chabet, a pioneering Filipino conceptual artist, teacher and curator. Art Prize One of the top attractions of the fair is the unveiling of an annual exhibition of works by winners of The Abraaj Group Art Prize. The award was launched in 2008 to empower and support contemporary artists. Curated by Nav Haq from the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, this exhibition will feature a new commission by the 2016 Abraaj Group Art Prize winners, artist duo Basel

Global Art Forum Art Dubai’s respected Global Art Forum returns this year with a focus on futurism. Titled The Future Was, the forum examines the ways in which artists, writers, technologists, historians, musicians and thinkers have imagined — and are continuing to explore — the future. Art from the region In line with its reputation as the world's largest annual showcase of artists from the Arab world, the 10th edition features an influential roster of incredibly talented artists, representing different genres, from the GCC. Some of the key names represented by various art galleries are Hassan Sharif from the UAE, Radhika Khimji from Oman, Tarek Al-Ghoussein from Kuwait and Ahmed Mater and Nasser Al Salem from Saudi Arabia.
THE ART OF NURTURING Four artists selected for the Artists in Residence (A.i.R), a development programme for UAE-based and international artists to work intensively for a few months alongside a curator, have taken up studios at Tashkeel in Dubai to produce new projects. Their works will be exhibited at Art Dubai as part of its non-commercial programme. Here’s what the artists told us about their new projects. Areej Kaoud A Palestinian artist raised in Montreal, Canada, Areej Kaoud studied and worked in Toronto and London before setting up a base in the UAE. Specialising in screen printing, sculpture and conceptual art, Kaoud is also an adjunct professor at the American University of Sharjah.

On her new project… The Artist Hard At Work plays on the themes of domesticity, procrastination and struggle. Following contemporary workout sessions by Iranian, Jordanian and Turkish trainers aired on TV, I draw upon the tactics of performance art by working out, building and shaping muscles, while viewers are present in my studio. I am looking at challenging the preconceived notions of exercise, bringing a domestic activity into a new space, where the body and the artist can be viewed under work. On A.i.R Dubai… Growing individually as an artist is constant, however, growing alongside a set of diverse artists and a curator in a common context is different. It is unique, challenging, and revealing of genuine strengths and weaknesses.
On his new project… This is going to combine my education in psychology and my passion for music into a silent monster or a beautiful nightmare. On the key influences for the project… My grandmother, who faced a lot of hardships in her life, is a major influence for this project. This is also based on developmental psychology and childhood dreams. Moza Almatrooshi Emirati artist Moza Almatrooshi recently graduated from the Sheikha Salama Emerging Artist Fellowship. She boasts experience in architecture, design, event planning, art exhibitions and writing. On her new project… I’m working to highlight the Mleiha area in Sharjah and the changes it has been
Lydia Ourahmane A graduate from Goldsmiths University, London, Algeria-born Lydia Ourahmane works between the UK and Algeria. Her work explores youth, transitional existence and the complexities of social and political structures. On her new project… I am developing a video work, which will be transmitted, using a proximity marketing device and Wifi network, at Art Dubai. Other elements of the work will be available to the audience via Bluetooth on their mobile phones in the form of prompts, texts and flashes of imagery. On research for the project… I used the medium of wireless video transmission in an earlier work a few years ago, but there has been tremendous technological advancements in this specific sector since then. This has allowed me to incorporate the Wifi connection alongside micro-location devices to deliver content to exact locations. Jumairy Emirati artist and musician Jumairy specialises in the genre of new media. An experimentalist at heart, he works to engage viewers through a combination of auditory, visual and tactile arts.

Built on a swamp, this Baltic beauty may bear some architectural comparison to European cities, but St Petersburg has a unique character. More specifically, St Petersburg was the vision of a unique character and his descendants. Established in 1703 by Tzar Peter the Great, the city was intended to be a display of imperial Russia’s growing status in the world. Without a doubt, the most impressive site in St Petersburg is the Hermitage, one of the largest and oldest museums of art and culture in the world. gardens built on the shores of the Gulf of Finland by Peter the Great were inspired by the tzar’s visit to The Palace of Versailles in 1717. The Grand Palace and Grand Cascade – one of the most extensive waterworks of the Baroque period – are the centrepieces and the whole complex is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Whether you choose the original Mariinsky Theatre, built in 1860 or the new Mariinsky II theatre that opened in 2013, it’s compulsory to see an opera, ballet or concert in St Petersburg, as it is renowned for its musical and theatrical performances. The new theatre, which cost an estimated €540 million, is one of the most expensive cultural projects ever built, and was highly criticised for its modern design juxtaposed against the 18th and 19th century edifices that surround it. However, the glass canopy ceiling gives the building a contemporary identity and the lobby’s dramatic glass facades and bay windows provide panoramic views of the city. Of course, the original Mariinsky Theatre is steeped in history and the baroque and gothic architecture is stunning. Attending a performance at either of these venues will be a holiday highlight.

Starting at the Admiralty, you’ll pass the huge neoclassical Kazan Cathedral, the Art Nouveau Bookhouse, a monument to Catherine the Great, an enormous 18th century shopping mall, a 19th century department store, and the Anichkov Bridge, with its iconic horse statues. The majority of the city's nightlife is located on or right off of the Nevsky Prospekt, so you’ll definitely find some lively entertainment.

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi PhD, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah has created a number of initiatives during his reign of 44 years, which have resulted in the emirate becoming one of the leading destinations for education and culture in the Arab region. In April 2013, Dr Shaikh Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the University of Sharjah, conceived a project to establish a centre to promote and develop education about astronomy and space sciences. It was the first of its kind in the Arab world. Dr Shaikh Sultan entrusted the responsibility of overseeing the project to Iraqi scientist, Professor Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, President of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS) and a member of the International Astronomical Union. The first phase of Sharjah Planetarium and Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences was completed in July 2015. The most magnificent and visible feature of the planetarium is its golden ceramic dome, spanning a diameter of more than 18 metres. The planetarium is equipped with a set of high precision digital projectors, which can display nearly 10 million celestial bodies, and the projection hall has the capacity to accommodate more than 200 visitors. Dr Shaikh Sultan himself designed both the golden dome, which was inspired by the sun, and the public gardens around the centre, which were created to reflect the planets of the solar system. During a press conference, Professor Al Naimiy revealed handwritten notes and design drawings in red ink by Dr Shaikh Sultan, illustrating his involvement with the project. Dr Shaikh Sultan’s love for astronomy came from the Quran. “God orders us to study astronomy as well as other sciences,” he said, and Islamic scholars

now visit the planetarium to learn about astronomy and improve their understanding of the Quran. The second phase of the Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences opened on January 25, 2016. At the entrance to the centre, there is a giant model of Apollo 11 - the first manned mission to land on the moon in 1969, and the mission where Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the lunar surface. It also contains an exhibition, featuring a giant mural and screens, which narrate the story of the creation of the universe. The exhibits are interactive and are intended to improve people’s knowledge of physics and space, including the challenges that astronauts face during space travel. There is also a research centre with an astronomy laboratory that’s

used by secondary school students and the students from University of Sharjah. The aim is to develop space technology in line with the UAE’s national agenda. In a separate observatory, 200m away from the main centre, there is 200mm reflecting telescope. The telescope is connected to an electronic control network that posts the acquired data on the internet, enabling users to access the information anywhere in the world. The observatory also has a high-precision spectroscope that enables a research team to study unique phenomena, such as unstable and double stars, and formulate mathematical models. Academically, the observatory plays a significant role in teaching astronomy and astrophysics to university students, and the programme has seen consistently higher enrolment each new semester.
AIR ARABIA SUPPORTS BABY NURTURING INITIATIVE Air Arabia proudly supports Baby Nurturing initiative as part of its CSR activities, launched by Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) to support the successful “Sharjah Baby Friendly City" campaign”.
Shurooq's baby nurturing initiative aims at spreading awareness about the best ways to raise children. The campaign covers 12 family or childrenrelated initiatives throughout the year, including a number of events at Al Qasba, Al Majaz Waterfront, Al Montazah

Air Arabia has added another European destination to its route network with the addition of direct flights between Sharjah and Sarajevo, starting from March 18, 2016. Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is home to more than half a million people. A popular tourist destination throughout the year, the historic city of Sarajevo features a wide array of attractions, shops, restaurants and cafes. The hills and mountains, which surround Sarajevo, offer a range of
recreational and sporting activities, including a well-developed skiing industry. AIR ARABIA DELIVERS NET PROFIT OF AED531 MILLION IN 2015
Air Arabia has announced strong end-of-year financial results for 2015, as the Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier continued to deliver healthy growth and strong levels of profitability. Air Arabia’s net profit for the full year ending December 31, 2015 was AED 531 million. Turnover in 2015 reached AED3.8 billion, an increase of three percent
on the previous 12 months, as the airline continued to expand its customer base. More than 7.6 million passengers flew with Air Arabia in 2015, a 12 percent year-on-year increase. The average seat load factor – or passengers carried as a percentage of available seats – in 2016, was an impressive 79 percent. Air Arabia added 23 routes to its network in 2015, including the significant achievement of becoming the first low-

cost airline from the region to enter the Chinese market, with the launch of regular non-stop services to Urumqi. فــي االســتوديو .أتطلــع لتحــدي التصــورات
المؤثــر الرئيســي علــى فكــرة المشــروع هــو
عملــي مبنــي علــى عمليــة .أريــد أن أرى عملــي
الشــائعة عــن التمريــن بإدخــال نشــاط منزلــي
جدتــي التــي مــرت بتجربــة مأســاوية للغايــة
وهــو يمــر بمراحــل دورتــه الحياتيــة حيــث يتغيــر
مســاحة جديــدة حيــث يمكــن مشــاهدة فــي ٍ الفنــان وجســده خــال العمــل الجــاد.
فــي صغرهــا .والمشــروع متأصــل أيضــً بعلــم
ويتدهــور ويضمحــل ويمــوت تدريجيــً .إننــي
النفــس النمائــي وأحــام الطفولــة.
حريصــة علــى ابتــكار وضعيــات لعملــي حيــث
األداء بإجــراء التماريــن بنفســي مــن أجــل بنــاء
يكــون كل شــيء طبيعــي ،ويومــً مــا يعــود
وبرنامج الفنان المقيم دبي... التطــور الفــردي للفنــان هــو أمــر ثابــت ،إال أن
موزة المطروشي تخرجــت الفنانــة اإلماراتيــة مــوزة المطروشــي
إلــى األرض.
مجموعــة التطــور والنمــو جنبــً إلــى جنــب مــع ٍ مــن الفنانيــن المختلفيــن وقيــم فنــي فــي
مؤخــرًا مــن برنامــج منحــة ســامة بنــت حمــدان
يقــام المعــرض مــن 16وحتــى 19مــن شــهر
ســياق مشــترك فــإن ذلــك أمــر آخــر .المهمــة
للفنانيــن الناشــئين ،واكتســبت خبــرة فــي
مــارس فــي مدينــة جميــرا
فريــدة وتحفــل بالصعوبــات والتحديــات وتكشــف
العمــارة والتصميــم وتخطيــط الفعاليــات
نقــاط القــوة ونقــاط الضعــف الحقيقيــة.
والمعــارض الفنيــة كمــا كتبــت مقــاالت فــي عــدة إصــدارات مســتقلة.

تخرجــت ليديــا أورحمــان مــن جامعة غولدســميث فــي لنــدن ،وتعمــل الفنانــة المولــودة فــي الجزائــر بيــن المملكــة المتحــدة ومســقط رأســها الجزائــر .يتركــز عملهــا علــى استكشــاف الشــبيبة والوجــود االنتقالــي وتعقيــدات البنــى االجتماعيــة والسياســية. المشروع الجديد... أطــور عمـ ً ا مصــورًا ســيتم بثــه باســتخدام جهــاز تســويق تقاربــي وشــبكة واي فــاي فــي آرت دبــي. وســتتوفر عناصــر أخــرى مــن العمــل للحضــور عبــر تقنيــة البلوتــوث علــى أجهــزة هواتفهــم الجوالــة فــي هيئــة إشــارات ونصــوص وومضــات ســريعة لبعــض الصــور. البحث خالل التحضير للمشروع... اســتخدمت وســيط بــث الفيديــو الالســلكي فــي عمــل ســابق قبــل بضعــة ســنين ،ولكــن تــم إنجــاز تقــدم تكنولوجــي هائــل منــذ ذلــك الوقــت فــي هــذا المجــال علــى وجــه التحديــد؛ وقــد أتــاح لــي إدخــال االرتبــاط الالســلكي للــواي فــاي إلــى جانــب أجهــزة مصغــرة فــي الموقــع لتوصيــل المحتــوى إلــى مواقــع محــددة. جميري يختــص الفنــان والموســيقي اإلماراتــي فــي فنــون الوســائط الجديــدة ،فهــو محــب للتجريــب

فن الرعاية أقــام الفنانــون األربعــة الذيــن وقــع الخيــار عليهــم لبرنامــج الفنــان المقيــم دبــي ،وهــو برنامــج تنمــوي للفنانيــن المقيميــن فــي اإلمــارات العربيــة المتحــدة إضافــة إلــى فنانيــن بشــكل مركــز مــع مــن خــارج الدولــة ليعملــوا ٍ قيــم فنــي ،ورش عملهــم فــي اســتوديو فــي "تشــكيل" فــي دبــي إلنتــاج أعمــال خاصــة بالموقــع .وســيتم عــرض أعمالهــم فــي آرت دبــي كجــزء مــن برنامجهــا غيــر الربحــي. نقــدم نبــذة عن رؤيتهم وأفكارهم في مشاريعهم الجديدة. أريج قاعود أريــج قاعــود هــي فنانــة فلســطينية ترعرعــت فــي مونتريــال ،كنــدا .بــدأت تنتــج أعمــاالً فنيــة فــي تورونتــو ولنــدن حيــث درســت وعملــت قبــل تخصصــت أن تنقــل مقــر عملهــا إلــى اإلمــارات. ّ فــي الطباعــة علــى الشاشــة الحريريــة والنحــت والفــن المفاهيمــي ،وتــدرس اآلن فــي الجامعــة األمريكيــة فــي الشــارقة.

القصيــرة لجائــزة مجموعــة أبــراج للفنــون 2016
بالتقديــر فــي الشــرق األوســط وأفريقيــا وجنــوب
لبرامــج صــاالت العــرض) األضــواء علــى الفلبيــن
دينــا دانيــش وبصيــر محمــود ومحمــود خالــد.
آســيا .وتســتقبل المدينــة عــددًا كبيــرًا مــن

المقيمــة فــي مانيــا علــى إدارة المعــرض الــذي

أعمــال أكثــر مــن 500فنــان مــن 70بل ـدًا ،وتتنــوع
يســعى إلبــراز الطبيعــة الحيويــة التــي يتســم
المشــاركات لتغطــي كافــة الوســائط الفنيــة
بهــا المشــهد الفنــي المســتقل فــي مانيــا.
نجــاح منقطــع النظيــر فــي الــدورات الســابقة ٍ ليتنــاول مواضيــع متعلقــة بالمســتقبل.
مثــل الرســم والنحــت والفــن التركيبــي واألعمــال
يتضمــن هــذا المعــرض المتعــدد التخصصــات
وســيعالج المنتــدى تحــت عنــوان "كان
المصــورة والتصويــر الفوتوغرافــي والفنــون
والواســع النطــاق لوحــات ومنحوتــات وأعمــال
المســتقبل" الطــرق والوســائل التــي تخيلهــا
األدائيــة .ومــن المتوقــع أن يكــون معــرض 2016

ســنوي واســعًا هــي الكشــف عــن معــرض ٍ لألعمــال الفنيــة للفائزيــن بجائــزة مجموعــة أبــراج
بــارزة لمجموعــة مــن الفنانيــن ذوي المواهــب
للمــرة األولــى كجورجيــا وغانــا وليثوانيــا وعمــان
للفنــون التــي انطلقــت عــام 2008لدعــم ورعايــة
المرموقــة يمثلــون مختلــف أصنــاف الفنــون
وفلســطين والفلبيــن وســريالنكا ،إلــى جانــب
الفنانيــن المعاصريــن .ويشــرف القيــم الضيــف
مــن دول مجلــس التعــاون الخليجــي .تشــمل
مجموعــة جديــدة مــن صــاالت الفــن مــن أوروبــا
نــاف حــق ،الــذي يشــغل منصــب القيــم الفنــي
القائمــة ،التــي يمثلهــا عــدة صــاالت للفنــون،
والواليــات المتحــدة والهنــد وتركيــا .كمــا يقــدم
لمتحــف الفنــون المعاصــرة فــي أنتويــرب فــي
حســن شــريف مــن اإلمــارات العربيــة المتحــدة،
المعــرض هــذه الســنة عــددًا أكبــر مــن المعــارض
بلجيــكا ،علــى المعــرض الــذي ســيقدم أعمــاالً
وراديكــه خمجــي مــن ســلطنة عمــان ،وطــارق
اإلماراتيــة ،إذ يشــارك 15جنــاح تعكــس مــدى
للفنانيــن الفائزيــن بجائــزة مجموعــة أبــراج
الغصيــن مــن الكويــت ،وأحمــد مطــر وناصــر

بازار قشغر يقال أن البازار في مدينة قشــغر هو األكبر في وســط آسيا ،وتمتد جذوره التاريخية إلى ألفي عام .تقام ســوق الحيوانــات في أيام األحد فقط ،ولكن الســلع األخرى تباع على مدار أيام األســبوع .يحفل الســوق بأنواع ال حصر لها من الســلع ،من المكســرات والتوابل إلى األنســجة والحرائر واألوانــي المنزلية وحتى اآلالت الموســيقية الفلكلورية. وجبة اإلفطار في مقاهي الشــاي الشــاي مشروب أساسي بالنسبة إلى شــعب األويغور ،وهنالك عدد كبير من مقاهي الشــاي في جميع أرجاء المدينة حيث يجلس الزوار على كراســي خشــبية بسيطة أو على السجاد التقليــدي ليتجاذبوا أطراف الحديث.
علــى مــدى أكثــر مــن ألفــي عــام كانــت مدينــة قشــغر محطــة تجاريــة هامــة علــى طريــق الحريــر فــي إقليــم شــينجيانغ الصينــي .ولكــن فــي العقــد األخيــر تــم نقــل كثيــر مــن ســكان المدينــة مــن قوميــة األويغــور ذات األغلبيــة المســلمة بعــد هــدم الكثيــر مــن البيــوت القديمــة المبنيــة مــن اللبــن فــي أحيــاء قشــغر القديمــة .وفــي محاولــة غريبــة للحفــاظ علــى التــراث التاريخــي لمدينــة قشــغر ،أعــاد الصينيــون بنــاء مســاحات مــن مناطــق األحيــاء القديمــة متبعيــن نمطــً عمرانيــً يحاكــي نمطهــا العمرانــي األصلــي .وكانــت النتائــج طريفــةً نوعــً مــا .ففــي حيــن قــررت الســلطات التعقــل والحفــاظ علــى إيحــاءات النمــط العمرانــي اإلســامي وتحديــد ارتفــاع األبنيــة بطابقيــن أو ثالثــة طوابــق مــن أجــل اإلبقــاء علــى أجــواء الشــوارع القديمــة ،قامــت بتوســيع األزقــة لتتيــح المجــال لمــرور الســيارات ،وقامــت بتعبيــد الطــرق الترابيــة .وأصبحــت المدينــة القديمــة بعــد هــذه التغييــرات أشــبه بمجمــع ســياحي .وحتــى نكــون منصفيــن للصينييــن يجــب أن نذكــر أنهــم تركــوا قســمًا صغيــرًا مــن مدينــة قشــغر القديمــة دون أن يغيــروه متيحيــن الفرصــة بذلــك للــزوار لكــي يتســنى لهــم التعــرف علــى الجانــب األصيــل والحقيقــي للمدينــة كمــا كانــت عليــه فــي الســابق. ولكــن التحديــث المشــابه لمــدن ديزنــي والتطويــر الــذي يخالــف برامــج منظمــة اليونســكو وتوجيهاتهــا لــم يتمكــن مــن القضــاء علــى كافــة الجوانــب التاريخيــة لمدينــة قشــغر القديمــة .مازالــت الشــوارع تعــج بأفــواج التجــار األويغــور ،ومــا زالــت روائــح شــواء لحــم الضــأن تعبــق فــي األجــواء (تقــدم اللحــوم
دون أي شــك الطريقــة المثلــى لخــوض
المتذمــرة مــع بعضهــا البعــض .يعــرف األصــل
