One of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, the Eiffel Tower in Paris was originally intended to stand for just 20 years. However, it was the tower’s height and its scientific uses that saved it from being dismantled. Built over two years, two months and five days as an entrance for the 1889 World’s Fair, the iconic lattice tower stands 324 metres tall and weighs 10,100 tonnes. Featuring 1,665 steps, the tower welcomes almost seven million visitors a year.

EAT LOCAL. EAT WILD Television’s favourite adventurous chef Valentine Warner loves foraging for wild ingredients to cook his meals TEXT BY CHIRANTI SENGUPTA
Be it on his hit TV series or off screen, Valentine Warner’s search for unusual ingredients and cooking techniques have often taken him beyond the kitchen, to some of the world’s most remote destinations. He's foraged for sea urchins and fished for salmon alongside grizzly bears on Discovery Island in British Columbia, Canada, and cooked haddock from Norwegian fjords – creating delicious meals in the wilderness. A trained portrait painter turned chef, Warner worked in several London restaurants before setting up a private catering company. He's also starred in numerous TV shows, including Valentine Warner’s Wild Table and Hook It, Cook It on the Nat Geo network and Valentine Warner Eats Scandinavia on the Good Food Channel. Here’s what he tells us about simple, locally sourced cuisine and his favourite foodie destinations.
I am fond of simple and local ingredients that are cooked well. Remembering that complicated recipes don’t always result in great food, simple is often the best. For me, it’s all about the flavours.

seasonal eating using local produce, what is your take on sustainable dining concepts, which are gaining traction all over the world? Basically, all I ask is that we use common sense. Try fresh food, taste the different flavours and don’t simply rely on what’s on the label. When you decide to go to Goa, it’s best that you leave your watch behind. The beach-side state on India’s west coast dotted with lush coconut groves and paddy fields has the languorous pace that is simply described as "susegad", derived from the Portuguese word "sossegado" (meaning quiet), I quickly learned that there was no hurry to be anywhere or get anything done quickly. As much as an exercise in patience, its attitude sets the perfect pace for a

vacation – you either surrender or get lured in slowly. A former Portuguese colony, Goa was a prized holding because of its strategic location along the Arabian Sea. The 1970s saw it develop a reputation as a hippy hub, before it evolved into the destination for trance music and full moon bashes. Growing up in Mumbai (less than an hour’s flight away), Goa was our version of a spring-break getaway. Its party personality is still alive, especially

However, I’ve come to appreciate the quiet, old-world charm that has turned repeat visitors into permanent residents. I leave the chaos of the popular Calangute-Baga strip in the north and sneak off to the quieter Majorda Village in the south, eager to experience the true essence of susegad. Rising early, I ignore the taxi drivers and choose to
walk around the snaking red mud roads on the hunt for a power breakfast of ros omelette – fluffy herb-and-chilli-flecked eggs tucked into a curry-soaked soft pav (bread). Sufficiently fuelled for the day, I follow the main Majorda Beach Road, stopping at shops along the way to haggle for handmade trinkets and

breezy sun dresses. I have no agenda and I’m OK with that. My camera captures the sprawling colonial bungalows and whitewashed churches – remaining evidence of the Portuguese who left in 1961. I stop by Carpe Diem, an arts and learning centre housed in a century-old mansion, complete with the traditional balcao (balcony), in-house chapel and antique furniture. Owner and director Daegal Godinho walks me through his family’s ancestral home giving me a first-hand look at what living large meant at the time. Works by local artists adorn the walls, and we take pensive moments to stop and absorb the colours and textures thoughtfully woven into each frame. Content with my history lesson, I jump into a cab and head for the capital city of Panaji, a 20-minute ride away. My first stop is the Mario Gallery, a store dedicated to the illustrations of Mario De Miranda who managed to capture Goan life with a dash of humour (available on mugs, magnets, books and the like). I walk over to Café Bhonsle and ask for the one thing I’ve been told I need to try: the fish thali. It lives up to its reputation, with me licking my fingers as I devour a slice of fried Kingfish, rice and coconut curry and sautéed vegetables. I try hard not to nod off in the cab on the way back. By now I’m suddenly aware that I’m not looking at my watch at all. I’m invited to go dancing at Cavala in the north and I see no reason to rush there. As I sit in a cab stuck in traffic, my friend reminds me it’s not about when I show up… just that I actually do. Could it be possible? Have I accepted the susegad life? GOOD EATS Experience ‘shack’ life with your toes in the sand at Zeebop while savouring traditional, home-style Goan cuisine. Start with crisp, semolina-crusted mussels, followed by coconut prawn curry, rice and tender squid with fiery-sweet reachad masala. Chef Bawmra Jap at Bomras serves excellent Burmese food crafted from local ingredients in a beautiful al fresco location. Don’t miss the pomelo-pomegranate salad and tender coconut panna cotta. It’s all about the view at Greek tavern Thalassa, overlooking the Arabian Sea. Come for the spicy shrimp sagnaki and succulent lamb kebabs, but linger long enough for the traditional sirtaki dance, which concludes with plate smashing.

Slightly farther afield, Deutz, on the other side of the Rhine, also offers a great view of the events. However, if you wish to escape the crowds, opt for a boat ride on the Rhine, and catch a stunning view amid live performances.

To many, Beirut is the perfect mix of East and West. It is a city in which tradition and modernity collide on the Mediterranean, where European and increasingly American influences mesh with the heritage of antiquity and the Arab World. It is the Middle East in a nutshell – diverse and troubled, yet ultimately charming and enchanting.
What to do Beirut is a small city that has a story and an experience to offer at every turn. Begin your day in Downtown, a centre for politics, fashion and history. The best way to explore the area is on foot and for an injection of spirituality head to the Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, one of the city’s most striking landmarks with a 48-metre high blue dome. The mosque was completed in 2008 and was built next to the Saint George Maronite Cathedral, a nod to the religious diversity of the city. Completed in 1894, the Cathedral houses a famous painting of Saint George by French artist Delacroix and is located beside an archaeological site that includes a Hellenistic structure and an Ottoman wall. Once spiritually enlightened, head towards Riad El Solh street and on to Place de l'Étoile. It is here that the 1930s Rolex clock tower overlooks the French-style boulevards and Lebanon’s parliament. The tiny Gulf state of Qatar happens to be one of the richest countries on the planet. You’ve probably heard about how the nation’s sovereign wealth fund has been snapping up assets across the globe, ranging from stakes in carmakers Volkswagen and Fisker to ownership of London department store Harrods and Paris Saint-Germain football club. Building a formidable portfolio of assets isn’t the Qatari government’s only ambition though. The art world, and in particular the Islamic art world, has been turned upside down by Doha’s financial clout. Consequently, the capital is now home to some of the finest museums of their kind on earth. Package this with world-class hotels and restaurants, groundbreaking architecture and excellent shopping, and the capital city starts to live up to the fiscal muscle of its wealthy rulers.

There’s been a market on the site of Downtown-located Waqif for centuries. Previous generations of Qataris would trade everything from spices and perfumes to goats and fabrics. Today, although there’s a touch of sanitised Disneyland to the place, it’s still a great spot to pick up jewellery, spices and souvenirs or to simply kick back in one of the restaurants and enjoy a bite. Al Tawash serves up traditional Qatari cuisine in a high-end setting, complete

with a rooftop terrace. The city’s famous falcon souk is also in Waqif, where birds vary from affordable (for the wilder specimens) to eye-wateringingly pricey for the pedigreed examples.

Doha’s finest museum is where you’ll find the largest collection of Islamic masterpieces in the world, spanning 1,400 years of history. With works collated from three continents, the Museum of Islamic Art is a result of rumoured expenditure by the Qatari royal family of more than $1 billion over the past decade. Everything from ceramics and glass to calligraphy, textiles and jewellery as well as Islamic paintings and various Islamic-themed temporary exhibitions is on display. Located in a building designed by renowned Chinese-American architect IM Pei, the museum showcases one of most complete collections of Islamic artefacts in the world. In fact, the Qatari royal acquisition of the art was so comprehensive that it drove prices for Islamic pieces up across the world.
Evening
When the sun sets and the weather cools, the Doha Corniche offers the opportunity to soak up the city’s dynamic and modern skyline as you stroll along the seafront. Handy to the Corniche is the InterContinental Doha The City hotel. Take the lift to the 55th floor and enjoy a drink at the Strata – the capital’s highest bar. Occupying the 55th and 56th floors, this popular nightspot serves up decent contemporary Asian cuisine and offers a stunning view across West Bay and its skyscrapers.

Al Riwaq is Doha’s leading contemporary art gallery. Visit before January 30 and you’ll catch a retrospective of works by Belgian artist Luc Tuymans – considered one of the most influential living painters in the world. Previous artists featured at Riwaq include controversial British artist Damien Hirst and colourful Japanese multidisciplinarian Takashi Murakami – known for blurring the line between high and low art. Essentially, a morning in this art space is likely to challenge any perception that Qatar refuses to embrace modern art – edgy or not.
Afternoon
South of the city is the pick of Doha’s public beaches – Katara Beach, a clean, well-maintained and friendly spot. The extensive water sports available range from parasailing and wakeboarding to banana rides and kayaking. The beach is also just a short stroll from Katara cultural village – the city’s open-air arts complex. Katara also boasts a decent selection of restaurants in the vicinity, serving a number of regional cuisines.
Evening
Drive around 13 kilometres west of Doha and you’ll come to one of the country’s more unique propositions – the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum. Named after the Qatari businessman

who acquired the artefacts, the vast (and slightly quirky) collection involves a wealthy lifetime’s worth of hoarding. Exhibits range from Vintage American cars and Islamic artefacts to dinosaur fossils and manuscripts. Located in a gigantic fort, it’s fairly unlikely that you’ll be able to get through the entire collection in one attempt. Back in town, be sure to check on the progress of the National Museum of Qatar in Al Corniche Street, scheduled to open next year. An interlocking disc design conceived by French architect Jean Nouvel (the man also tasked with the design of the Louvre Abu Dhabi), even in its current state of construction, it provides a striking example of the ambitious scale of the city’s plans for the future. THE RULER OF SHARJAH EXAMINES THE EMIRATE UNDER THE FLAG OF OCCUPATION

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah since 1972, is a scholar, researcher and reputable historian of the Arabian Gulf. He is a prolific writer and the author of 40 books in Arabic and 55 books in foreign languages – translated versions of his literary works. Each year, at the Sharjah International Book Fair, Dr Shaikh Sultan releases new books, published by Al Qasimi Publications, Sharjah. This year's book fair commenced on November 4 and it saw the release of two books written by Dr Shaikh Sultan, in Arabic and English versions: a further instalment of his memoirs, titled Culture, Education and Change (1987-2004), and Under the Flag of Occupation. Under the Flag of Occupation is a historical perspective on Sharjah under the rule of British Empire, from 18201866. It is an account of the events that occurred, mostly in Sharjah Fort. The fort was built during the reign of Shaikh Sultan Bin Saqr Bin Rashid Al Qasimi, who inherited the rule of Sharjah in 1803. It still stands in the heart of the emirate, and was previously used as the seat of the Sharjah government, the residence of the Al Qasimi ruling family, and as a jail. The publication is the result of the study of thousands of historical documents collected from the Mumbai Archives as well as the India Office Records at the British Library in London. It chronicles the political, economic, social and cultural history of Sharjah. In the early part of the 19th century, the Arabian Gulf was an area of great significance to the East India Company in Bombay. Its regional base was on the Island of Qishm, off the coast of Persia and, with the support of British authorities, the company sought military and political control of the key ports on both sides of the Gulf. One of those ports was the Shaikhdom of Sharjah. The British Navy controlled the Arabian Gulf until India gained freedom from the British Empire on August 15, 1947. Sharjah port was particularly
significant as it was a main gateway to the Trucial States. It was located at the entrance of the sea, known locally as Al Khor, and fresh water could be sourced at a relatively shallow depth. The population of Sharjah at the time of British occupation was only between 2,000 and 2,500 people and most residents worked in pearl diving, which
children in schools and the public at large saluted the flag until November 4, 1975. In 1975, the Ruler of Sharjah lowered the nicknamed ‘Qasimi flag’ and raised the national flag of the UAE, finally replacing the British flag of Sharjah after 155 years. Shaikh Sultan Bin Saqr had to face two main obstacles during his reign; the British on the one side and forces

was seasonal. According to Dr Shaikh Sultan, the habits and customs of the people of Sharjah were both moderate and simple, and their needs and demands were few. Their livelihoods depended on dates grown on their own farms, on the milk that came from their cattle and camels, on the plentiful supply of fish, and on the poultry kept in their backyards. On August 12, 1820, the Qawasim flag – which had three coloured bands: green, white and red – was replaced by a flag imposed by the British. In the succeeding years, the people of Sharjah considered the British flag as the flag of the Al Qasimi clan and

of Wahhabism on the other. Emerging from central Arabia, the Wahhabis recovered from the Egyptian Ottoman military campaign, and how they sought to extend its sway along the eastern Arabian coast is well documented by the author. The book Under the Flag of Occupation includes a collection of rare maps of Sharjah from 1820 and 1822, and a map showing the historic Herat pearl-diving sites. Shaikh Sultan Bin Saqr ruled the emirate for almost 50 years. He steered Sharjah admirably through precarious times of external and internal challenges under British occupation.

STRONG FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE FOR THIRD QUARTER Air Arabia announced its financial results for the first nine months ending September 30 2015, as the company continues to achieve strong financial results and solid growth. The company delivered a record net profit of AED472 million for the first nine months of 2015 and its revenue turnover reached AED2.87 billion for the nine months ending September 30, 2015, an increase of 2 per cent on the corresponding 2014 figure. Passenger numbers increased by 11 per cent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2015 reaching 5.7 million passengers. Revenues for the three months ending September 30, 2015, increased by 6 per cent to stand at AED1.1 billion, while net profits in the third quarter of 2015 reached AED235 million. More than 2 million passengers were served in the third quarter of 2015, an 18 per cent increase on the corresponding period of 2014, while the average seat load factor was 80 per cent.

AIR ARABIA NAMED AIRLINE OF THE YEAR 2015
Air Arabia won two of the top prizes at the Aviation Business Awards 2015, being named Low Cost Airline of the Year and Airline of the Year Middle East. The airline was recognised for a number of milestones over the past year, including expanding its

الخامس عشر من شهر أغسطس في عام .1947 كان لمرفأ الشارقة أهمية خاصة إذ أنه كان بمثابة بوابة العبور إلى إمارات الساحل المتصالح .ويقع المرفأ على مدخل البحر ،وكان يعرف محليًا بالخور .وكان من الممكن الحصول على المياه العذبة من أعماق ضحلة نسبيًا. في زمن االحتالل البريطاني كان عدد سكان الشارقة يتراوح بين 2٫000و 2٫500نسمة ،يحترف معظمهم مهنة الغوص بحثًا عن اللؤلؤ الذي كان موسميًا. وكما يقول المؤلف كانت عادات وتقاليد سكان الشارقة معتدلة وبسيطة كما كانت متطلباتهم واحتياجاتهم قليلة؛ اعتمدوا في كسب معيشتهم على ثمار التمور من مزارعهم واللبن من مواشيهم ونوقهم ووفرة األسماك والدواجن التي كانوا يربونها في بيوتهم. في الثاني عشر من شهر أغسطس عام ،1820تم استبدال راية القواسم ذات األلوان الثالث: األخضر واألبيض واألحمر بعلم فرضه البريطانيون. وعلى مر السنين اعتبر سكان الشارقة ذلك كراية آلل القاسمي ،وكان العلم البريطاني ٍ بشكل عام ،يقومون أطفال المدارس ،والناس ٍ

وبدعم من السلطات البريطانية، البر اإليراني، ٍ سعت الشركة لبسط نفوذها من أجل التحكم
