After graduating from the Naval Academy (1957) and a successful 10year stint as the men’s coach, served as the head coach for the women’s program during its initial season (1976-77) as a junior varsity team. Intending to serve as the mentor for just a few years, instead coached the team for the next 12 campaigns. Navy ended its season with a winning record in 10 of Smalley’s 12 years as head coach. Two decades after he retired from the position, his players still rank among the top student-athletes in school history, including Colleen Cassidy (held the career scoring record until 2004), Connie James (ranks second in career rebounds and first in field goal percentage) and Margie Trott (her 500 career assists remains the school standard).
