2013 NAVY WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD Carla Criste

Head Coach 22nd Year at Navy • Penn State (‘86) Overall Record at Navy: 316-51-1 (.860)

Carla Criste will enter her 22nd season as Navy’s head women’s track and field coach in 2012-13. Criste is one of the Academy’s most successful and consistent coaches. Under Criste’s guidance, Navy has defeated Army in eight straight indoor/outdoor Star Meets, a dominance that included seven straight indoor Star Meet victories. Overall, Criste is 25-14-1 against Army and is an impressive 13-1 against the Black Knights in the last seven years. Criste has led Navy to an outstanding dual-scored meet record of 316-51-1 (.860) during her tenure and the team has posted a 134-3 (.978) record and four undefeated seasons since the beginning of the 2005-06 season. In addition to its regular season successes, Navy has also stepped up at the postseason championship level, claiming five Patriot League titles since 2001 and posting five top-20 efforts at the ECAC Championship over the last nine seasons. In 2011-12, Navy swept Army in the indoor and outdoor Star Meet for the fourth straight year, won the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship and Jess Palacio earned Navy’s first Division I Indoor Track and Field AllAmerica accolade after placing 16th in the mile at the NCAA Championship. Criste earned her fifth career Patriot League Coach of the Year award after leading Navy to the league outdoor title. The Mids rallied from a fifth-place standing on the final day of competition to win the team title, taking four individual titles and eight runner-up finishes to place 23 points ahead of second-place Bucknell. Navy was also the runner-up at the Patriot League Indoor Championship. In addition to Palacio competing at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Mids sent three athletes to the NCAA’s East Regional Outdoor Championship. Navy also had five ECAC All-East performers (two indoor and three outdoor). In 2010-11, Criste led Navy to the indoor Patriot League Championship in 2010-11 and was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. Navy also swept the

indoor/outdoor Star Meet series with Army for the third straight season. Navy blew away Army, 129-73, at the outdoor Star Meet for its largest margin of victory ever over its rival. The Midshipmen would post their second-straight undefeated year in 2009-10. The indoor team was 10-0 in dual-scored meets and the outdoor team was 3-0. It was also the second straight year that the women’s track team won both the indoor and outdoor N-Star meets and the ninth sweep overall. Criste also earned her second straight Patriot League Indoor Coach of the Year award. At the helm in 2008-09, Criste guided the Mids to one of their most memorable seasons in program history. After being picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League’s preseason poll, Navy rode its distance corps and a spirited underclassmen group to the program’s second indoor track championship. For her efforts, Criste was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. In 2007, Navy recorded a ninth-place team score at the ECAC Championship during the outdoor slate, its highest finish since moving up to the Division I ranks in 1991-92. In that same outdoor season, the Mids also scored at the NCAA East Region Championship for the first time since the regional was added in 2003. In addition to her team’s performance on the track, Criste’s student-athletes have also done their part in the classroom. Navy produced both the Patriot League’s Indoor and Outdoor Track Scholar-Athletes of the Year in three-consecutive years, with distance standout Erica Ziel claiming the honor during both the winter and spring slates during the 2008-09 season. Before Ziel, it was Vicki Moore, the Class of 2008 Valedictorian with a perfect 4.00 GPA, who was named the conference’s top track student-athlete in 2007-08. The year prior, Kirsten Andrews (‘07) became the first Navy women’s track & field member to be selected Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for all sports. Andrews would graduate as one of the Academy’s most decorated student-athletes, having twice earned Academic All-America honors during her decorated career. Criste’s track & field team was awarded the Naval

Academy Athletic Director’s Cup for being the most successful all-around team for the 2007-08 athletic season. Criste came to the Academy in 1991 after spending three years as an assistant with the women’s program at George Mason, where she oversaw the jumps, sprints, hurdles and multi-events. There, five athletes earned All-America status and two became NCAA champions under her tutelage. The Patriots also captured the ECAC Division I Championship in each of her three seasons. Criste has also been recognized on the national scene. She was selected as the field events coach for the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival and coached the East team to victory, marking the East’s first-win in the history of the festival. In 1999, Criste was named head coach for that year’s Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Canada. She also served as head coach of the 1995 U.S. National Track & Field Team, which consisted of men’s and women’s junior and senior teams that came together for a series of meets against Canada. Criste guided the U.S. team to wins in all four meets. A standout performer in her own right, Criste was a four-year letterwinner in track at Penn State, serving as captain of the Nittany Lion women’s squad in 1985-86. She was an NCAA qualifier in the triple jump and was a national qualifier and ECAC record holder in both the pentathlon and heptathlon. After graduating from Penn State with a degree in nutritional science in 1986, she went on to earn her master’s degree in exercise physiology from West Virginia in 1988. While at West Virginia, Criste served as an assistant track & field coach, handling the Mountaineers’ jumps, sprints, hurdles and multi-events. After concluding her own collegiate career, Criste continued competing at the national level. For three years (1986-89) she competed at the U.S. Olympic Festival and was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1986-91. She was nationally ranked in both the triple jump and multi-events, representing the United States in several international team competitions. The daughter of Joan and Dave Criste (USNA `60), Criste also serves as an Assistant Athletic Director and professor at the Academy.

After having an NCAA Division I All-American last season, winning the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championship and claiming eight event titles at the league’s indoor and outdoor championship meets, 22nd-year head coach Carla Criste has the Navy women’s indoor track and field team poised for another successful season in 2012-13.

Middle Distance Sophomore Shannon Cuthbert was Navy’s top 800m runner during the indoor season last year and nabbed seventh place at the league championship. Cuthbert also placed eighth in the 800m at the outdoor league meet. Sophomore Madeline Zell will also run in the 800m.

“We’re excited for this season,” Criste said. “We are pretty wellrounded with one or two solid performers in each event. It’s also great to have our distance girls coming off a Patriot League Cross Country title and bringing that ‘Expect to Win’ tone to the whole team.”

Sophomore Annie-Norah Beveridge is coming off a very successful fall cross country season that saw her lead Navy to a Patriot League team title. Beveridge was the medalist at the Patriot League Cross Country Championship, earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors and competed in the NCAA Cross Country Championship.

Navy garnered 11 first-place votes and 95 points overall to top the 2013 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field preseason poll. Navy placed second to Bucknell at last year’s indoor meet, but did win the outdoor league championship last spring.

In addition to its strong performances at the Patriot League Championship meets last season, Navy swept Army in the indoor and outdoor rivalry meets and the Class of 2012 finished their careers with a perfect 8-0 record in track and field against the Black Knights. Navy also sent three athletes to the NCAA East Regional Championship last year and five athletes earned ECAC All-East honors in five different events. 2013 NAVY WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Built facing the scenic Severn River in 2008, the Wesley A. Brown Field House is a 140,000-square-foot multifunction athletic facility that has served as the home for the Naval Academy’s men’s track & field program. The facility boasts a unique combination of a 76,000-square-foot retractable Magic Carpet Astroturf system and a Mondo track surface with hydraulically controlled banked curves. The 200-meter hydraulic banked track is one of only four of its kind in the United States. It also features dual pole vault/jumping runways and throwing areas. State-of-the-art weight training and sports medicine facilities, as well as equipment storage areas round out this newest crown jewel to the Navy athletics arsenal. The facility is named for the late Lieutenant Commander Wesley A. Brown, CEC, USN, (Ret.), the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. Brown was born April 3, 1927 in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., where he was Cadet Corps Regimental Commander during his senior year. Nominated for admission by New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Brown entered the Academy in 1945 and graduated in June of 1949. Lt. Cmdr. Brown, a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retired in June 1969 after serving 20 years in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. He holds the Navy Commendation Medal, World War II and Korean War Victory, Korean Service, and American Theater and Antarctic Service Ribbons. Brown passed away in 2012.

“Wesley Brown (above right) represents the service as well as anybody that put on the uniform. What a heroic step, what a courageous move, and what a lasting contribution he made. . . . I think it is appropriate that this field house is named after an individual who has fought a war all his life to improve the Navy and the nation.” Adm. Michael G. Mullen 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

2013 NAVY WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

The all-weather MONDO track located northeast of Michelson Hall and Chauvenet Hall is the site of Navy’s outdoor track and field meets. Considered to be one of the premier facilities in the United States, it is named in honor of Vice Admiral Jonas H. Ingram, who commanded the U.S. South Atlantic Fleet during World War II. He was also the Naval Academy Director of Athletics from 1925-1930. The track underwent a $1.7 million renovation in the fall of 2001, with new all-weather surfacing placed on the quarter-mile oval and jump areas. The field area boasts six shot put circles, a discusthrowing circle and a javelin throwing area in the middle of the track. The field has four long/triple jump pits and a “D” zone that allows two high jump areas to be used concurrently. The facility is also equipped with lights and Navy regularly holds ‘twilight’ meets at the facility. Additionally, the facility also features a Daktronics scoreboard, which displays current times and marks during meets.

2013 NAVY WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores.
