40 years ago A SAILOR who, it was believed, was the only person still serving entitled to wear World War I medals, was due to retire in the following November. AB George Parker had joined the Service in March 1918. Wartime submarine HMS Trespasser which had returned to Portsmouth from South Africa, was due to be scrapped. Launched in 1942, she had seen World War II service in the Mediterranean, Aegean and the Far East, winning three Battle Honours Sicily 1943, Aegean 1943 and Malaya 1944.

30 years ago A FORCE of Royal Navy ships took relief supplies to East Pakistan, hit by a tidal wave. Vessels involved included the assault ship HMS Intrepid, the repair ship and former aircraft carrier HMS Triumph, HMS Hydra and RFAs Sir Galahad, Olwen, Resource and Stromness.

20 years ago NAVAL personnel at NATO's base in Naples were taking part in relief work following a disastrous earthquake which hit the area. An RN officer and 29 ratings had been called in to man prison medical facilities at stop-gap prisons in Durham and Wiltshire during the prison officers' dispute.

Became pianist and in late 1950s and early 1960s had 17 chart hits that sold more than 30 million records. Regular performer on BBC TV's popular Billy Cotton Band Show. Nov. 17. aged 75. Henry (Bill) Grimmett DSM. ex-PO Motor Mechanic, served 1942-46. Served in Combined Ops 1943-45, taking part in operations in Sicily, Italy, Yugoslavia, Corsica, Elba, South of France. Oct. 10, aged 76. Cdr F. E. J. (Joe) Warren QBE. WW2 service in HMS London, Duke of York, Glasow (Normandy landings), Kempenfelt, Indomitable (severely wounded in kamikaze attack, Okinawa 1945). Post-war service: Royal Albert, Condor, Malabar, Gannet, Wrangler, Eagle, St Angelo, Intrepid, Daedalus, Tamar. Heron. On retirement Financial Manager and Deputy Director of Fleet Air Arm Museum for 12 years. Nov. 20, aged 75. Prof Sir Cyril Clarke KBE. RNVR medical specialist 1939-46 and eminent medical genetecist. Ended war in Australia as CO of corvette. Leading British sports car drivers before and after war. Won his class in Le Mans 24-hour race in a HRG in 1938. Chairman of Silverstone Circuits Ltd 197277. Aged 85. Grant West, ex-RM Cpl, served 1940-45. Veteran of Crete campaign (Heraklion), Malta convoys as AA gunner in HMS Orion. UP TO 70,000 people are being sought to work as team leaders and enumerators for the next ten-year census in April. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) would want participants to work part-time on the task, which could be combined with existing jobs, from February to June. Details and application forms arc available by calling the ONS helpline on 0845 306 2001 (open from January 3). The census takes place on Sunday, April 29 and will include members of the Armed Forces serving in the UK and those serving overseas for less than six months. Details of what Service people need to do - such as who needs to fill in what form - is being published in Joint Service Defence Council Instruction 2/01.
