NAVY NEWS looks back through its pages to recall some of the November headlines of past decades...
THE TIME OF YOUR LIVES 40 years ago The world record for deep diving was broken by Senior Commissioned Boatswain George Wookey (34) who descended to 600ft from the salvage vessel HMS Reclaim. Diving in Norwegian waters, Wookey was equipped with a helmeted, flexible suit and received a breathing mixture of oxygen and helium from Reclaim. The previous record of 535ft had been established by a Royal Navy diver in 1948.
30 years ago Despite a Defence White Paper which projected the end of the aircraft carrier in Royal Navy service, Fleet Air Arm morale was at a level which confounded gloomy forecasts, said the Flag Officer Naval Air Command, Vice Admiral D. C. E. F. Gibson. He said personnel had been encouraged by the start of HMS Ark Royal's £30 million refit and the coming of the Phantom strike aircraft.
HMS Reclaim in 1956 - the year she was mother ship for a successful attempt on the world deep diving record.
20 years ago The woolly pully "epidemic" was reported to be spreading through the Royal Navy, with the garment becoming available for the WRNS and junior ratings. Meanwhile, Navy News reported that the first women cadets had joined Britannia Royal Naval College, marking the move of WRNS training from Greenwich to Dartmouth. Princess Anne was guest of honour when the first of the Island-class patrol vessels, HMS Jersey, commissioned at Rosyth.
