A MESSAGE FROM THE FFR DIRECTOR

FEATURE STORY

Everyone is Climbing Their Own Mountain

MWR Mount St. Helens Summit Attempt

BY: L t. Cmdr. SUNNY MITCHELL

At 4 a.m. Monday, May 7, my alarm rang, but it didn’t matter because I was already awake as anxiety coursed throughout my already dehydrated body. I was shivering as a result of the cold air and ripe nerves (although I could not tell which one was worse), as I donned my hiking gear, cold weather boots, and choked down a bowl of oatmeal to climb Mount St. Helens with our MWR group.

Thirty minutes before heading out, my head pounded, as I swallowed Ibuprofen. This was particularly scary because no matter how much water I drank the day before, I was dehydrated that morning. I questioned myself, “How did I let this happen?” As I was wrestling with these issues, our group lined up for one final check of our location beacons (you know, in case we were caught in an avalanche or something) and we proceeded up the mountain at precisely 5 a.m., our step-off time. Our group was so large we were like an accordion shrinking and lengthening as we slipped and slid in the snow, while trying to keep in step with the person in front of us. We had not even reached the tree line (where the vertical climb actually begins) and I knew I was in trouble. I was light

EVENT/CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Avalanche Awareness Workshop

Learn about winter back-country dangers, avalanche avoidance techniques, use of safety equipment, proper winter wear, and how to use an avalanche transceiver. This class is a prerequisite for mountaineering trips and Ice Axe Arrest Classes. This is an informational class and not a certification class.

Beer Tasting in Woodinville

Taste some of the Pacific Northwest’s finest brews. Food will be available to purchase in the area. Tasting fees are not included.

Blewett Pass Snowshoe

Panoramic views and modest elevation gain make for an excellent day out in the snow. We will follow the Wenatchee Crest ridgeline that features views of the Stuart and Teanaway Mountain Ranges. Six-miles roundtrip with 400-ft. elevation gain. All snowshoe gear is provided.

Books, Brews & Trivia

Discuss an adventure-themed book, enjoy tasty food, and sip great brews. Then, team up for a round of trivia or two! Book will be provided about a month prior to the meet-up.

Facebook Live Q&As

Hear from our knowledgeable and adventurous outdoor guides LIVE on Facebook every second Wednesday of the month! We’ll discuss upcoming events, give tips for enjoying the PNW outdoors, give away prizes, feature surprise guests, and answer questions you may have.

Franklin Falls Snowshoe

Witness frozen waterfalls 10

and mountain views. Seven-miles round-trip with 400-ft. elevation gain makes this an intermediate snowshoe. All gear is provided.

Ice Axe Skills Workshop

In preparation for our spring and summer summit trips, two classes are required: Avalanche Awareness Class and Ice Axe Skills. Ice axe skills are used in a mountaineering environment to allow you to travel safely to your destination. Should you slip or fall, you will learn how to arrest (stop) yourself and come to a safe and efficient stop without aid of ropes or other devices.

Mazama Ridge Snowshoe

Snow-covered alpine meadows and jawdropping views of Mount Rainier. This gorgeous trail is moderate in difficulty with a 900-foot elevation gain over a six-mile duration. All snowshoe gear is provided.

Midnight at the Mardi Gras Murder Mystery

With a mystery under each feathery facade, unmasking the killer may be quite a challenge. It’s up to you to determine which partygoer is guilty, bring this crime to justice, and save the party! Open to patrons ages 18+.

Moonlit Snowshoeing

Enjoy an evening of fluffy snow and quiet surroundings. The experience of snowshoeing on a moonlit night is one that will never be forgotten. The distance will be less than 3 miles, so it’s a great trip for families and beginners, but also exciting and unique enough for experienced snowshoers. All gear and transportation provided.

HOBBIES & RECREATION

Mountaineering Program Info Meeting

Want to climb Mount St. Helens or Mount Adams? This informational meeting will answer all your questions about our mountaineering program, give you an opportunity to get hands-on with our climbing gear, meet the guides, and see past trip photos and video.

Mount Baker Snowshoe

Explore one of the best snowshoe routes in the state. Artist Point and Bagley Lakes offer amazing views of Mount Shuksan and the surrounding snow-covered peaks and meadows. All snowshoe gear provided.

Mount St. Helens Climb

To participate, you must be registered in or completed an Avalanche Awareness Workshop and the Ice Axe Arrest Class offered through MWR. Although strenuous, this non-technical climb is suitable for people in good physical condition who are comfortable scrambling on steep, rugged terrain.

Snow Cave Weekend

Did you know that sleeping in a snow cave is warmer than sleeping in a tent? It is! You’ll learn how to build the ultimate snow cave and then spend the night in your cave. Your guides will help you with your cave construction and also make sure you stay warm with three hearty meals and plenty of warm water bottles.

Snowmobiling in Leavenworth

Explore the mountains, discover the awe-inspiring views of Lake Wenatchee and enjoy a day in the snow! We will

SNOWINGA

We’ll warm up with 30 minutes of yoga and then hit the trail! This guided trek will last roughly two hours, with stops along the way for yoga poses in the snow and time to enjoy the beautiful views. We will stop at a winery on the way home for a little tasting. Snowshoe gear included. Tasting fee not included.

Stevens Pass Ski Shuttle/Military Appreciation Night

End the stressful week by hitting the slopes! Let the guides do all the driving while you sit back, relax and enjoy the ride to the resort. This is a Military Appreciation Day, so there will be huge discounts on lift tickets, rentals and food! Please bring your military ID.

Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga with Carly

Enjoy the benefits of yoga while challenging your balance in our indoor saltwater pool. All equipment provided. Beginners and experts welcome!

Wine & Paint

Stimulate your taste buds and creativity with a guided paint lesson and a glass of wine! No experience necessary. All supplies provided. Food, wine, and other beverages available for purchase. All ages welcome.

Wine Tasting in Woodinville

Sample some of the Pacific Northwest’s finest wines. Transportation only. Tasting fee and food must be purchased separately.

Winter Backpacking

Experience the beauty and peacefulness of a pristine winter wonderland on this overnight trip into the backcountry. Enjoy everything the snow has to offer or stay cuddled up in your warm sleeping bag. Either way, your guides will keep you warm with three hearty meals and plenty of warm water bottles.

Winter Driving Basics

Driving in the snow can be intimidating. Get tips from our outdoor guides who drive across our mountain passes multiple times a winter. We will discuss websites to check road conditions, what items to keep in your vehicle, how to put on snow chains and how we decide “to go or not go”.

HOBBIES & RECREATION

(continued from page 5) For the next two hours, Summer and I continued to climb both over lava flows, with huge boulders, and trudge uphill through deep snow. We talked about what our climbing goal should be because at that point I thought I had enough energy to sustain me to the summit. Whether we had enough time left in the day to reach the summit was an entirely different question. We decided that the weather station (between 1.25-1.5 miles from the summit) would be our interim goal. From the weather station, we could determine if we had time and I had the energy to summit. The last 50 feet to the weather station were incredibly steep. The snow was soft and deep, and I would step into a hole and many times slide back. I was not mentally prepared for those last

50 steps. I was scared that I’d have to use my ice axe to arrest a steep fall downward. Yet, onefoot-in-front-of-the-other allowed me to reach the weather station and accomplish this goal! At the weather station, Summer and I checked our clocks, and realized if I wanted to summit, then we would need to get going. I tilted my head, and looked straight up and stared at the mountain of snow in front of me. Without doubt or regret, I said, “Not today.” And, Summer’s reply was the most important lesson of the day, “I have been doing this trip for a while now and one thing that I noticed is that we may be on Mount St. Helens, but everyone is climbing their own mountain out here and they’re not the same mountain.” We are all climbing mountains throughout our lives, whether they

are the intimidating peaks of Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, or Mount Adams, or the moments of change and transition in our lives such as divorce, grief, or having a baby. We bring with us the culmination of past experiences, our doubts, our worries, our dreams, and our hopes. What matters is how we organize these experiences in our heads, the equipment we choose to use on our mountain adventure, and the people (mentors) that we seek along the way that enable us to achieve the weather station and ultimately the summit!

my thoughts, and caring for myself physically. As I sat above the clouds, and stared at our neighboring mountains, Mount Hood and Mount Adams, I realized that there will always be other mountains to climb throughout life; as a matter of fact, I can come back next year to this exact same mountain and be better prepared, or I can accept these life lessons and move on to the next mountain in life.

“Failure to summit” does not mean failure. I overcame a mountain of thought and numerous physical limitations to get three-quarters up this mountain. Most importantly, these three-quarters of a mountain would not have been possible without relying on a strong mentor, changing

Thank you for your service and inspiration Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacob Watt NAVY WOUNDED WARRIOR OF THE YEAR

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacob Watt exemplifies what it means to be a Resilient Warrior. Over the past year, Watt has not only been a mentor to other Wounded Warriors, but also began pursuing his dream of becoming an aviation mechanic and commercial airline pilot. After an extensive recovery period, Watt not only passed a rigorous FAA cognitive screening, but also completed a 9-month long internship as an aviation mechanic for a major commercial aviation company. His supervisor called Watt’s recovery team several times during the internship to ask for more Warriors like him, describing Watt as “the best and hardest working mechanic he’s ever hired.” Watt also takes the time to attend community and networking events to further his growth and to mentor other Wounded Warriors and transitioning service members. Watt credits his wife, Mallory, for being his dedicated and strong supporter. “She knew this journey would be hard, but she never gave up on me and our adventure has only just begun,” he says. Join us in wishing the Watts a bright and happy future together. They have shown us what courage and commitment look like through their resilience and continued selfless service to others. — Contributed by Eddie Garcia
