2016 Report “ I am here today because of Navos. The staff saved my life.” —Navos client

to our community

Dear Friend of Navos,

Since the 2016 Presidential election, there has been uncertainty about what significant changes there will be in healthcare services for the poor, disabled and the elderly, and even for middle-income families. The changes proposed so far will mean a reduction in services for them. The proposals that have been voted on threaten the requirement for health insurance plans to cover treatment for mental health and substance use disorders and truly affordable access healthcare for low income Americans. In the months since the election, the proposals that the House and Senate have taken action on have had a common theme of cutting up to almost hundreds of billions of dollars in healthcare services in exchange for significant tax cuts for higher income Americans. Despite these uncertainties, there are some intriguing initiatives seeking ways to improve full population wellness and Navos is fulfilling our strategic plan to address the emerging trends and increasingly implement evidenced-based best practices.

Mental illness is treatable. People can and do recover.

• Integration of Primary Care with Behavioral Health

People living with mental illnesses and substance use disorders can die decades younger than others born the same year they were, mostly from untreated and preventable chronic illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking-related cancers and cardiovascular disease that are aggravated by inadequate physical activity, poor nutrition, smoking, substance abuse, and even the side effects of some of the medications that keep people mentally stable enough to live outside of institutions. Barriers to primary healthcare coupled with challenges in navigating complex healthcare systems have been major obstacles to wellness. Navos has been and continues to be a leader nationally in integrating primary care into our services. Several years ago we partnered with Public Health Seattle-King County to embed a primary health clinic within our Mental Health and Wellness Center, and we continue to work to decrease emergency room visits and to improve the health of the most vulnerable people with multiple, complex health issues. • Telehealth

Online therapy and mobile applications are transforming Tele-psychiatry and creating remote monitoring opportunities. In recent years many mental health smartphone applications have emerged to engage consumers. We aim to increase the use of Telehealth for other services providers beyond psychiatrists and nurse practitioners. • Data and Outcomes

We have set higher standards for excellence in documentation, capturing data and tracking outcomes to help us be nimble and timely in “treat to target” changes in treatment plans in a matter of weeks, not years when adequate progress is not being achieved. As we grapple with needing to provide more with less, and moving into a value-based purchasing marketplace we have an increasing need to demonstrate with solid evidence the improvements in our clients’ physical and mental health, and the reduction in their substance use disorders. We need to have solid measures of success in order to do the biggest for those we serve and also capture and maintain contracts for services. Navos has been proud to be at the forefront of implementing emerging treatments and innovative approaches to improving care for our clients. We thank you for your support for our programs and services. Your generosity makes a big difference in Navos’ ability to provide quality care beyond what public funding makes possible. You help us to be innovative in piloting new best practices and to serve those most vulnerable in our community. Thanks for all the good you help make happen!

David M. Johnson, Ed.D, LMHC Chief Executive Officer
