he Italian Cultural Institute in London and the Pistoia – Dialogues on Man festival presented in London a series of contemporary anthropological lectures by Giulia Cogoli and Marco Delogu, the institute’s director. The event was held at 7 pm, every Wednesday in October, at the elegant Georgian-style premises of Italian Cultural Institute in London, at 39 Belgrave Square. four notable Italian intellectuals – anthropologist Marco Aime, classicist Eva Cantarella, semiologist Stefano Bartezzaghi, and archaeologist/art historian Salvatore

Settis – were joined by English colleagues to offer the London audience their thoughts on the theme of the other and us, analyzing some phenomena that are affecting all of Europe with the intention of providing tools to better understand the world around us. The initiative offered a very stimulating debate and cultural exchange immediately with Marco Aime’s first session on October 3. The subject Borders and Frontiers, one of the more topical issues, was discussed with journalist and essayist Daniel Trilling. On 10 October, it was the turn of Eva Cantarella with Nicola Gardini on The Journey and Meeting with the “Other”: from Homer to Herodotus, an ever valid lesson. Stefano Bartezzaghi and Robert Gordon were center stage at the third meeting on 17 October, with Homo Ludens 2.0. From dice to social networks, what

game are we playing? Salvatore Settis closed this cycle of encounters in London on October 24, where he, Bill Sherman, and Marco Delogu addressed the subject of The Skies of Europe. Culture, Creativity, Equality.

— Gianni Berengo Gardin exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris After the round of encounters in London, the exhibition, curated by Giulia Cogoli, of the master of Italian photography Gianni Berengo Gardin was inaugurated on Tuesday, 6 November, at 6 pm, in Paris at the Italian Cultural Institute during “PhotoSaintGermain”. The photos were taken specifically for the Pistoia – Dialogues on Man festival. Open free of charge from 7 November-6 December, this exhibition dedicated to Italian popular culture assembles 60 black-and-white photographs taken between 1957 and 2009, many of them never seen before. The exhibition has become an account of a “festive” Italy in which everyone celebrates their culture and history with old and new rituals. This fascinating world is populated by children, gypsies, old women or young ladies dressed up for a party and by dancers of all ages. “This small and wonderful photographic atlas of folk festivals in Italy,” Giulia Cogoli stated, “tells about the ancient and hybrid customs and traditions in all of Italy’s regions, with an ethnographic point of view, yet also a touching curiosity”. “I’ve been attracted by the various expressions of folk culture since my beginnings,” Berengo Gardin explained, “and my work has taken me throughout Italy, coming in contact with the rich heritage of traditions, rituals, and

customs that characterize our country. For me, photography has also been a way to be a part of these extraordinary, insightful moments. I believe that these photographs have a symbolic importance today, documenting worlds that, in some cases, have now disappeared and, in others, been altered by other forms of participation, changing them forever”. This project was arranged by the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris, together with Pistoia – Dialogues on Man, Fondazione Caript, Contrasto, and PhotoSaintGermain. ☜
