ost people appreciate the need to have greener neighborhoods, and our cover story identifies some of the manifold benefits associated with incorporating sustainability and green buildings into our vision of the future. Creating a more sustainable community doesn’t happen overnight, nor does it occur without a keen focus on what must be done—from the federal, state and local government perspective all the way down to each individual act of depositing a cardboard box into the recycling bin. We all play an important role. Our governments and the officials we elect to run them, however, can have a much bigger impact on sustainability. In the upcoming November elections, two candidates will be voted onto the Arizona Corporation Commission, which is responsible for rates and regulatory policies related to the state’s utilities, among other things. This year, this normally sleepy contest is marked by some decidedly different viewpoints on solar energy, and this election will surely influence the future of solar energy in our state for years to come. The purpose of this publication is not to advocate for one position over another or one candidate over another. Rather, I encourage everyone to investigate all the candidates themselves and make an educated choice. It’s not just this one race that impacts our sustainability, either. Elections matter, and this one will have a huge and lasting effect on achieving progress in better resource management locally and across Arizona. We can’t afford to be apathetic; abdicating our choice means that someone else will be choosing for us.

I'm over 40, have worked as an office manager all my life, and live a primarily sedentary lifestyle. My lifestyle and lack of exercise have affected my body in a negative way. Frequent stress at work has not helped my health either. Several years ago, I started having strange episodes: my breathing was short, I had sharp burning pains in my chest and back, but I didn't pay attention to these warning signs. I attributed it all to being overworked or a lack of sleep. I thought everything would improve on its own. It was an inexcusable health d e c i s i o n , b u t I w a s young and had no time for doctors; my career was more important. S u b s e q u e n t l y, I h a d frequent episodes of pain that greatly affected me physically and mentally. I was really suffering! I'm actually a really sensitive person, and these episodes had me going into panic attacks! I would often catch myself expecting a new episode with horror. That's when I finally decided to take a serious examination of my health. I was scared that it was my heart, however, I was diagnosed with something very different: osteochondritis of the thoracic spine. My doctor explained that I had an evident vertebrae displacement, osteochondritis, some indurations, strained and atrophied muscles. All these bone and muscle strains caused both my breath to stop and sharp pains in my chest and back. My prognosis didn't look good according to my doctor. Because I had neglected my condition for so long, it had grown into a chronic condition. It would be very difficult to make any substantial changes. So, at my age, still relatively

pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF). In purchasing this devices, my hope was to take advantage of the benefits that I read about, namely that the magnetic field

young, I found myself a wreck. Over the next two years, I had studied piles of medical literature. I was prescribed an inordinate amount of medications. I became a favorite client of my chiropractor and every other kind of specialist and spent a lot of money out of pocket. I can't say I didn't see any improvement, I began to feel better, but I started to experience stomach pain, nausea, and dizziness. These were the side effects of the drug cocktail I was on, and the doctors told me that it was only a matter of time before they got it "right". As new prescriptions were added or changed my symptoms only changed and didn't get appreciably better. I realized it was just a vicious circle. An old friend of mine from New York sent me an interesting article about magnetic fields and their effect on the human body. It appears that the magnetic field can stimulate the body's own natural functioning and thus improve the immune system and healing in general, including relieve pain and inflammation in the joints, improve blood circulation, and enhance metabolism in the cells. The result is that harmful metabolic by-products would not accumulate in tender joints and hinder the joints' ability to acquire nutrients, making it possible for the joint to normalize. I looked around on the internet and found several magnetic stimulation devices. Being desperate, I decided to try the Almag-Ol machine. It had a small number of contraindications, it's been on the market for quite a while, and uses the most effective form of magnetic field,

Almag - 01 is a magnetic stimulator that has an effect on the body with pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF). The effects of a pulsed electromagnetic field is expressed by a more implicit impact on biologically important systems of the body. The penetration depth of the pulsed electromagnetic field generated by Almag-O 1 machine into the human body is more than three inches. This allows treatment of the affected or damaged organs through bandages or plaster. Almag - 01 is able to reduce inflammation and pain, to exert sedation, to reduce swelling of tissues and to improve overall health. Pulsed

generated naturally activates the human body's own healing powers. It was a little easier to get out of bed in the morning. The chest pains, shortness of breath and panic attacks were a lot less frequent as well. With these results, my doctor was able to reduce a number of my medications too. I was so happy that I would not have to use so many chemicals any more. In time, I was feeling so well that I started working with a physical therapist and was able to start swimming again. I was even able to do a little remedial gymnastics under his supervision. I could never imagine I would be able to do that! I progressively began to feel much greater range and ease of movement than I had before. During an exam with my doctor, I told him about my new experiences. The doctor concluded that the results were due to improved blood circulation in the muscles and tissues, along with reduced inflammation. He recommended I continue my treatment with the Almag-O 1. Several months have passed since I started using the Almag. I continue to practice my exercises and work with my therapists and I'm so happy with the reduction in pain and increased range of motion. One morning I was able to get out of bed and stretch on my own and realized that it didn't hurt. It was a miracle, the chronic nature of my illness receded. I have come a long way to get to this point and I still have work to do, but I know that with regular prophylactic use of the Almag-O 1 , and the work that I'm doing with my physical therapist and trainer, I have enabled my body to heal with out prescription drugs.

electromagnetic field of the Almag - 01 improves blood circulation and allows nourishing and also to improve the transport of medications in the blood to better penetrate into the cells. Almag - 01 is indicated for back pain ( osteochondrosis, osteochondritis), muscle-skeletal system diseases, cardiovascular diseases, venous system diseases, neuritis and injuries. You may use Almag as needed, at your convenience. You can take care of your business, work at your computer, talk by phone, watch your TV -while using the Almag-O 1. The device is delivered with detailed instructions.

Private Yoga Lessons in Tempe

J

ennifer Annjanetta Yoga, in Tempe, is offering half off all one-on-one or small group sessions and packages through December. These sessions are a reprieve from the large group class environment that can foster an imbalanced focus on the external without equally supporting the individual cultivation of inner fire, body awareness and the mapping of breath movement. Annjanetta says, “Yoga is not only breathing and moving. At its heart, yoga is a practice of you connecting with you.” She has studied with Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, Mark Whitwell and Bryan Kest, and believes a good yoga instructor is a lifelong student. Annjanetta notes, “While there are some things that can be studied, much is understood as it is experienced and lived. Remember, when you are more uncomfortable, you are probably learning more. The best instructors will happily admit that they learn by doing and learn even more by failing.” For more information, visit JenniferAnnjanetta.com or call 480-207-6720. See ad on page 66.

Scan Now for Peace of Mind

D

e Novo Scan, now with offices in Glendale and Scottsdale, is offering Natural Awakenings readers $50 off any breast, half-body or full-body thermal scan through October 31, in observance of national Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thermography, or digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), is gaining the spotlight as a new way to examine the state of our health in Phoenix, using high-resolution thermal cameras, state-of-the-art thermal imaging software and the most experienced team of reading doctors in the country. Unlike mammograms, X-rays and MRIs, which look at the body’s anatomical structure, thermography examines the physiology, or function, of the parts of the body—without exposure to any radiation. Thermography currently serves as an excellent adjunct to traditional breast screening methods and often serves as a primary resource for many women in their annual breast screening practices.

A New Direction for Neti Pots

U

sed for centuries in Asian cultures to support nasal health and eliminate toxins from the nasal mucosa, neti pots have recently become popular in the Western world and are recognized for their value in preventing and relieving sinus infections. Typically, a mild solution of unrefined sea salt and purified or distilled water is poured from one nostril through the other to flush out unwanted mucus, bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. Herbalist Steven Frank, of Nature’s Rite, points to a powerful new paradigm that helps neti pot users deal even more effectively with infection: a regimen of aqueous, colloidal silver and soothing herbal and plant extracts. Frank recommends using the neti pot with a colloidal silver wash that is retained in the nostrils for several minutes. “Bacteria and fungus stick rather well to the nasal mucosa and few are flushed out with simple saline flushes,” he explains. “Most of these nasty pathogens adhere to the mucosa with what is called a biofilm. Within this slime layer, they are well protected and thrive in the warm moist sinuses, so a small saline bath once a day doesn’t bother them much. However, colloidal silver disables certain enzymes needed by anaerobic bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungus, resulting in their destruction. Also, unlike antibiotics, silver does not allow resistant superbugs to develop.” He also suggests soothing the sinuses with restorative herbal decoctions. Calendula, plantain and aloe contain vital nutrients that soothe and heal, while Echinacea root and grapefruit seed extract offer antimicrobial benefits. Frank emphasizes the importance of using a neti pot safely and responsibly and warns against table salt, which can irritate nasal membranes, and tap water, which may contain contaminants. The plan, presented at the 2014 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in Chicago, also forms the basis for the Solutions Project nonprofit. “The greatest barriers to a conversion are neither technical nor economic. They are social and political,” the AAAS paper concludes. The proposal is to eliminate dirty and inefficient fossil fuel combustion as an energy source. All vehicles would be powered by electric batteries or by hydrogen produced by electrolysis, rather than natural gas. High-temperature industrial processes would also use electricity or hydrogen combustion. Transmission lines carrying energy between states or countries will prove one of the greatest challenges. With natural energy sources, electricity needs to be more mobile, so that when there’s no sun or wind, a city or country can import the energy it needs. The biggest problem is which companies should pay to build and maintain the lines. Source: SingularityHub.com

Clever Collaborations

Renewables Gain Ground Worldwide Excess heat from London subway tunnels and an electric substation will soon be funneled into British homes, slashing energy costs and lowering pollution, according to the Islington Council. Germany’s renewable energy industry has broken a solar power record, prompting utility company RWE to close fossil fuel power plants that are no longer competitive. RWE says 3.1 gigawatts of generating capacity, or 6 percent of its total capacity, will be taken offline as it shuts down some of its gas- and coal-fired power stations. In China, wind power is leaving nuclear behind. Electricity output from China’s wind farms exceeded that from its nuclear plants for the first time in 2012 and out-produced it again last year, generating 135 terawatt-hours (1 million megawatts)— nearly enough to power New York state. While it takes about six years to build a nuclear plant, a wind farm can be completed in a matter of months. China also employs a recyclingfor-payment program in Beijing subway stations that accept plastic bottles as payment. Passengers receive credit ranging from the equivalent of five to 15 cents per bottle, which is applied toward rechargeable subway cards. In the U.S., a newly installed working prototype of a pioneering Solar Road project has raised more than than double its $1 million crowdfunding goal to seed the manufacturing process (Indiegogo.com/projects/ solar-roadways). K-LASER THERAPY

Brings New Benefits for Peripheral Neuropathy

P

by Dr. Kent Pederson

eripheral neuropathy is a condition characterized by damaged nerve endings, usually in the feet and lower legs and/or hands. It can cause tingling, burning, intense pain, numbness or all the above. It can be related to diabetes, but not necessarily. Quite a few cases are of unknown origin, or idiopathic. Causes can include trauma to the nerve, chemotherapy drugs, autoimmune disorders, prolonged high blood sugar and other drugs, such as the cholesterol lowering statins. Medical treatment for years has centered on pain management using such drugs as Gabapentin, Cymbalta, Lyrica, Oxycodone and others to cover up the symptoms while the condition progresses. More recently, medical treatment has involved pain block shots and muscle-stimulation methods once again used to cover up the symptoms. A much more natural, effective, noninvasive approach is cutting-edge KLaser therapy. This painless approach employs the powerful Class IV K-Laser which is utilized by many professional football and baseball teams. This treatment focuses on healing the damaged nerve endings, rather than covering up the symptoms with dangerous drugs which can cause terrible side effects. The K-Laser reaches beneath the skin to begin healing the nerve

endings to reduce pain and restore feeling. Balance can improve significantly, along with pain, tingling and burning, which can affect sleep. It is imperative that a patient be aware of the difference between the powerful Class IV K-Laser and Class III Lasers, which are much more prevalent. If the treatment involves wrapping the feet and lower legs in LED lights and sitting unattended for 20 to 30 minutes, that denotes a Class III Laser. A Class III Laser has one-half-watt maximum power and penetrates the skin to a depth of one centimeter. This is far too weak for a condition such as peripheral neuropathy, which involves nerve damage at different depths. By comparison, the K-Laser has a 12- to 15-watt maximum power and penetrates to a depth of five centimeters. It works faster and more efficiently than the Class III Lasers, which are deemed obsolete by professional sports teams. In addition to peripheral neuropathy, the K-Laser works extremely well with arthritis and arthritic joint pain. Low back, neck conditions, hips, knees and elbows also respond especially well to K-Laser therapy. Kent Pederson is a doctor of chiropractic and owner of the Arizona K-Laser Neuropathy Center, which offers tailored treatment plans at 11111 N. Scottsdale Rd., Ste. 105, in Scottsdale. SUSTAINABLE

CITYSCAPES Urban America is Going Green in a Big Way by Christine MacDonald

T

oday, buzzwords like “sustainability” and “green building” dominate discussions on how to overcome the unhealthful effects of climate change, extreme local weather events and pervasive pollution. Now, a growing body of research indicates an unexpected upside of living greener; it not only makes us healthier, but happier, too. It’s all helping to spread the “green neighborhood” idea across the U.S., from pioneering metropolises like New York, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, to urban centers like Cincinnati, Detroit and Oakland, California.

Rethinking Redevelopment

cal footprints, rather than on fossil fuels. Along with building entire ecocities, developers also are striving to replace hard-luck industrial pasts and turn problems such as depopulated urban cores into opportunities for fresh approaches. “We are having a major rethink about urban development,” says Rob Bennett, founding CEO of EcoDistricts (EcoDistricts.org), a Portlandbased nonprofit skilled in developing protocols for establishing modern and sustainable city neighborhoods. The group has recently extended help to seven other cities, including Boston, Denver and Los Angeles, applying innovations to everything from streetscapes to stormwater infrastructure. “The failures of the old, decaying urban and suburban models are

The concept of home is undergoing a radical makeover. From villages of “smallest houses” (usually no bigger than 350 square feet), to low-income urban housing complexes, people interested in smaller, more self-sufficient homes represent a fast-growing, increasingly influential segment of today’s housing market, according to experts such as Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big House. Google reports that Internet searches for information on “tiny houses” has spiked recently. Economic freedom is one factor motivating many to radically downsize, according to Bloomberg News (Tinyurl.com/TinyHouseDemand). Cities nationwide have overhauled their building codes. Cincinnati, for example, has moved to the forefront of the eco-redevelopment trend with its emphasis on revamping instead of demolishing existing buildings. Private sector leaders are on board as well; a transition to buildings as sustainable ecosystems keeps gaining ground through certification programs such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and the “living building” movement begun by Seattle’s Cascadia Green Building Council has gone international.

Friendly Neighborhoods

Walkability is “in” these days, along with bike paths, locavore shopping and dining and expansion of public destinations, all of which draw residents out to meet their neighbors. This “new urbanism” is evident in places like Albuquerque’s emerging Mesa del Sol community and Florida’s proposed Babcock Ranch solar-powered city. Clean Energy The ways we make and use energy are currently being re-envisioned on both large and small scales. Solar cooperatives have neighbors banding together to purchase solar panels at wholesale prices. Startup companies using computer algorithms map the solar production potential of virtually every rooftop in the country. However, while solar panels and wind turbines are rapidly becoming part of the new normal, they are only part of the energy revolution just getting started. In the past several years, microgrids have proliferated at hospitals, military bases and universities from Fort Bragg, in North Carolina, to the University of California at San Diego. These electrical systems can operate in tandem with utility companies or as self-sufficient electrical islands that protect against power outages and increase energy efficiency, sometimes even generating revenue by selling unused electricity to the grid. While still costly and complicated to install, “Those barriers are likely to fall as more companies, communities and institutions adopt microgrids,” says Ryan Franks, technical program manager with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.

markets feeding urban foodies has given way to a growing local food movement that’s beginning to also reach into low-income neighborhoods through mobile markets, a kind of farmers’ market on wheels, and an explosion of urban gardens and city farms. Ohio City Farm (OhioCity.org) grows food for in-need residents on six acres overlooking the Cleveland skyline. In Greenville, South Carolina, the Judson Community Garden is one of more than 100 gardens in the downtown area, notes Andrew Ratchford, who helped establish it in a neighborhood four miles from the nearest supermarket. Giving residents an alternative to unhealthy convenience store fare is just one of the garden’s benefits, Ratchford says. “We’re seeing neighbors reestablish that relationship just by gardening together.”

Waste Reduction

While cities nationwide have long been working to augment their recycling and find more markets for residents’ castoffs, many are becoming more sophisticated in repurposing what was formerly considered trash. Reclaimed wood flooring in new homes and urban compost-sharing services are just two examples characterizing the evolution in how we dispose of and even think about waste. We may still be far from a world in which waste equals food, as described by environmental innovators William McDonough and Michael Braungart in their groundbreaking book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. Nevertheless, projects certified as cradle-to-cradle are cutting manufacturing costs and reducing pollution. For example, carpet maker Shaw 28

Phoenix

Industries Group, in Dalton, Georgia, reports savings of $2.5 million in water and energy costs since 2012, when it improved energy efficiency and began using more renewable material in its carpet tiles. Shaw is spending $17 million this year to expand its recycling program. Stormwater runoff is a pervasive issue facing older cities. Many are now taking a green approach to supplementing—if not totally supplanting —old-fashioned underground sewage systems. Along with creating new parks and public spaces, current public spaces are often reconfigured and required to do more. Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, among others, are instituting carefully planned and built green spaces to soak up rainwater and cut down on runoff into sewer drains— taking motor oil and other pollutants with it. Using revamped sidewalk, parking lot and roof designs, plus rain gardens designed to filter rainwater back into the ground, municipalities are even successfully reducing the need for costly underground sewer system overhauls. The proliferation of rooftop gardens in places including Chicago, Brooklyn and Washington, D.C., and new green roof incentives in many cities nationwide further exemplify how what’s considered livable space is expanding. Altogether, eco-cities’ new green infrastructure is saving cities billions of dollars and improving the quality of life for residents by adding and enhancing public parklands and open spaces, a happy benefit for everyone.

Since the tiny Himalayan country of Bhutan first came up with the idea of ditching standard measures of prosperity for a more inclusive Gross National Happiness (GNH) about a decade ago (GrossNationalHappiness.com), it has spread around the world. After gaining a U.S. foothold in Seattle, dozens of American cities and institutions have adopted the central tenets—the idea that the time has come to rethink our concept of well-being. Today, the nonprofit Happiness Alliance (HappyCounts.org) supports grassroots activists that are challenging the idea that economic activity always leads to happiness and is pioneering new ways to think about and measure life satisfaction, resilience and sustainability. GNH proponents from around the country came together in Vermont last May for their fifth North American conference. Alliance Executive Director Laura Musikanski says that more than 50,000 people and 100 municipalities, college campuses and businesses have been using the GNH Index, developed to more accurately gauge a community’s happiness, and the group expects to see even more growth as its expanding website tools allow more people to connect online. “Economic success in terms of money only correlates with happiness up to a certain point,” she remarks. “After you meet your basic needs, the biggest things determining your happiness are community and feeling that you can trust the people around you and the democratic process.” While faith may be in short supply when it comes to community and politics today, Musikanski thinks there’s cause for optimism, because happiness is Christine MacDonald is a freelance a core value in this country. “We believe journalist in Washington, D.C., whose in the Declaration of Independence and specialties include health and science. ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ Visit ChristineMacDonald.info. Within Walking Distance by Kathy Maguire

F

or decades, metropolitan Phoenix epitomized urban sprawl. Prior to the housing crash, builders were putting up 60,000 new homes annually at the desert’s city limits. However, when the housing market plummeted and some of those new neighborhoods were all but abandoned, Phoenix became committed to moving in the opposite direction—toward walkable neighborhoods connected by public transit. The makeover started with a new light rail line that connects remote communities, and the areas around each rail stop have been developed into denser, urban places where people actually want to spend time outside. Looking at walkability from a property value standpoint, pedestrian-friendly walkways that connect to the places people want to go, such as shopping, services, public transportation and jobs not only foster a sense of community, but also improve property values. Check out WalkScore.com and see the data to prove it. This site uses Google maps to rate neighborhood walkability on a scale of 1 to 100 and provides information about distance to stores, restaurants, post offices, libraries and other community services. Joe Cortright, of CEOs for Cities, analyzed data from 94,000 real estate transactions in 15 major markets and found that higher levels of walkability, as measured by Walk Score, were directly linked to higher home values. The key finding was that houses with above-average levels of walkability command a premium of about $4,000 to $34,000 over houses with just average levels of walkability.

After the housing slump and foreclosure crisis that began in 2008, it’s interesting to note that the steepest declines in value and the highest rates of foreclosure occurred in auto-dependent areas. Areas with transportation choices, including walkability, held their value. It may come as a surprise to some that homebuyers that move to far-flung suburbs in search of affordable homes might be giving up what they save on mortgage payments to fill up their cars’ gas tanks. In fact, a study by the Center for Housing Policy estimated that for every dollar saved on housing, the homeowner spent 77 cents on transportation. That calculation doesn’t include commuting time or the environmental impact of carbon emissions from auto exhaust. We are experiencing a shift to communities that are more conducive to walking and utilizing public transportation, and financial and real estate sectors are playing their part by building communities that are more environmentally, socially and financially sustainable. According to the Science Applications International Corporation, one person commuting alone by car that switches a 20-mile round trip commute for public transportation saves 4,800 pounds of carbon per year. To rank local neighborhoods in terms of walkability and housing/transportation, an online, interactive mapping tool (htaindex.cnt.org) developed by the Center for TransitOriented Development and the Center for Neighborhood Technology shows average percentage of income spent on housing plus transportation for cities, towns and neighborhoods across the country. The index sets a benchmark of 47 percent of income as the amount a household should spend on housing plus transportation. Kathy Maguire is a residential real estate agent with DPR Realty, LLC. cost-effective and decisive, the results were due to the honest, hardworking and dedicated people we found there,” he advises. Williams initiated his pioneering advocacy of solar energy as a media specialist with the DOE during the Carter administration and served as the national media director for Greenpeace, in Washington, D.C. In 1997, he co-founded the solar installation company SELCO-India, which has supplied solar home systems to more than 150,000 families in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam and South Africa. In 2005, he founded the solar solutions supplier Standard Solar Inc., of Rockville, Maryland.

Humankind has sought for centuries to harness the sun because the cumulative energy of 15 minutes of its rays shining on Earth could power the world for a year. Following the invention of the solar collector in 1767, a slow, yet steady evolution of other breakthroughs in the quest have included the photovoltaic (PV) effect, observed in 1839, invention of the first solar cell in 1954 and a solarpowered communications satellite in 1958. Solar summits in 1973 and 1977 led to the inception of the Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Laboratory), part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Organization Act signed by then-President Jimmy Carter. Making the most of the “alchemy of sunlight” that Pulitzer Prizewinning author Daniel Yergin writes about in The Quest: Energy, Security, and the Remaking of the Modern World, has required a global village 30

engineers. Pioneering companies have produced technological advancements and reduced manufacturing costs that expand the sun’s services to the world. Today, thanks to solar power, many of the remotest villages in developing countries have electricity. “Without solar photovoltaics on satellites and those powering the uplink transmitters, downlink receivers and associated equipment on the ground, the isolated residents of developing countries can’t join the modern world,” explains Neville Williams, author of the recently released book, Sun Power: How the Energy from the Sun is Changing Lives Around the World, Empowering America, and Saving the Planet. As founder of the guerilla nonprofit Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF. org), Williams led the charge for electrifying households in 12 developing countries for 17 years, beginning in 1990, using solar panels and systems funded by grants. “While we were

The U.S. currently has an operating capacity of 13,000-plus megawatts of cumulative solar electricity—enough to power more than 2.2 million average American homes. As the industry grows, so does its impact. The Solar Foundation’s Solar Job Census 2013 reported nearly 143,000 solar workers in the U.S.—a 20 percent increase over 2012—at 6,100 businesses in 7,800 locations encompassing every state. According to Yergin and Williams, the increasing value of nationwide solar installations has “electrified” the U.S. economy. In 2013, domestic solar electric installations were valued at $13.7 billion, compared to $11.5 billion in 2012 and $8.6 billion in 2011. The top 10 states for annual additions of photovoltaic capacity in residential and commercial applications are California, Arizona, New Jersey, North Carolina, Nevada, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Colorado, New York and New Mexico. Currently, there are more than 550 major solar projects underway nationally. Under the Obama administration, 16 of these have been permitted on federal lands and will provide 6,058 megawatts of generating capacity. The two experts expect solar energy to be a major catalyst of global political and economic change. Williams contends that now is the time to fully access this cheapest form of unlimited energy.

“If millions of poor families in developing countries can get their electricity from the sun, why can’t Americans do the same?” he queries. In a 2002 National Public Radio Planet Money podcast, Yergin, president of Cambridge Energy Research Associates, in Massachusetts, addressed the concerns of everyone that sees the common sense of relying on solar energy. “Technology will be central to solutions for our energy challenges,” he says. “What needs to be done is very, very large, as are the risks and challenges. conomics, rather than technological concerns, are now driving the adoption of clean, safe, solar electricity to preserve the environment. During this transition to a new energy paradigm, we can choose to embrace the solar imperative now, rather than later, and prepare for a post-carbon lifestyle without sacrificing our present quality of life. Many hurdles have been overcome in the shift away from fossil fuels during the past two decades. Challenges still exist, but the hope is that we are on our way toward a brighter future with solar electricity made universally available. n The cost of solar photovoltaics has dropped 75 percent in the past four years, thanks to China. n Solar electricity is now the least expensive energy source in many

markets, overcoming for the first time the economic argument that it’s too expensive. n Innovative partnerships like that formed by green energy provider Viridian with large, full-service solar provider SolarCity lease solar panels to homeowners and businesses that significantly reduce upfront costs. Installation costs, which once averaged more than $20,000, can now amount to just hundreds of dollars. n Solar is disrupting the century-old central power generation model, and the challenge is to get the utility industry to change and adopt distributed solar. Utility companies that previously ignored solar energy now fear it might threaten their bottom line if they don’t get with the program. n While the next big obstacle is en-

ergy storage, which allows the use of sun power at night, well-financed new “smart grid” technologies are rapidly emerging. n The impending showdown will be between corporate power and people power, comprised of homeowners and businesses producing their own electricity. The politics of energy is central to our national future. The question is, Can we change? Learn more at NevilleWilliams.com.

The Best Medicine for Insomnia May be Psychological by Dr. Michael Breus

S

leep deprivation from any cause, including insomnia, sleep apnea or just not enough time, affects every organ system and every disease state. It affects all forms of both medical and psychological treatment and can bring on severe psychological distress. Symptoms include difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking up too early, feeling tired and irritable, daytime sleepiness, mood changes, attention, concentration or memory problems, and frustration or worry about sleep. When insomnia occurs at least three nights a week for one month or longer, it is time for treatment. Often, good sleep habits and self-care can cure a mild case of short-term insomnia. Some sleep aids, including sedatives, minor tranquilizers and anti-anxiety medications, become habit-forming or pose a potential for overdose if not used as directed. While an over-the-counter sleep aid may help with an occasional sleepless night, it is inappropriate for chronic insomnia. If there is no underlying medical condition fueling the insomnia, then there is almost certainly a mental health component. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been adapted

32

for use in this disorder with remarkable results. In many cases, CBT for insomnia can be more effective than medication or supplements, and certainly longer lasting. This structured therapy teaches a person how to alter behaviors that worsen insomnia and learn new ways to think about and promote sleep. In some cases, the use of a supplement can help break the cycle of insomnia, and then CBT can be used to treat it. Here are some basic lifestyle changes that can be quite helpful. Try not to worry about sleep before going to bed. Provide distraction with reading, prayer or meditation. Avoid clock-watching; turn the clock around and use only the alarm. Make the bedroom comfortable for sleep; keep it dark, quiet and not too cold or warm. Use a sleeping mask to block light or earplugs or a fan to block noise. Relax before bedtime by reading, listening to relaxing music, bathing or doing another relaxing activity. Don’t eat a heavy meal late in the day; a light snack before bedtime may help with sleep, though. If these suggestions do not help, contact a behavioral sleep specialist and get formal therapy. Insomnia is not the only situation that a behavioral sleep specialist is qualified to treat. Other problems include: Delayed or Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome: Here a person’s body clock is either going too fast or too slow compared to the rest of society. CPAP Compliance: Sleep apnea is treated with a specialized medical device called a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, but few people like using it. Issues with claustrophobia exist, but there are several possible forms of treatment. Childhood and Adolescent Sleep Disorders: Bedtime refusal, nightmares, night terrors, nighttime fears, etc. require a different approach than with adults. Michael Breus, Ph.D., is a board-certified sleep specialist and a diplomate of The American Board of Sleep Medicine in private practice in Scottsdale. He is the author of the bestselling book, Good Night: The Sleep Doctor’s 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health. For more information, call 480-999-5900. See ad on page 38.

TRICK & TREAT Host a Halloween that’s Natural, Healthy and Cost-Conscious by Avery Mack

Slipping masks, sagging costumes and sugar hits can all contribute to cranky kids at Halloween. Healthier, greener and safer options will up the ongoing fun factor.

Neat Costumes

Hooray! Princesses and superheroes are more popular than witches and devils these days. With encouragement from parents, kids can enjoy a greener Halloween with tiaras, wands and capes made from recycled cardboard and hobby shop items. Thrift stores offer up hats and jewelry for added bling. The Internet overflows with inspiration. Also, many public libraries host costume swaps this month; find other swap locations at Tinyurl.com/CostumeSwaps.

Colorful Disguises

Consider inexpensive temporary hair coloring instead of wigs. Mix three packets of sugar-free drink mix or one box of sugar-free gelatin dessert mix (because sugar makes hair sticky), a few drops of both water and a conditioner into a paste. Apply cocoa butter at the hairline to prevent 34

color from running down the face. Use a paintbrush to apply it to the hair, topped by a shower cap for a steeping period of as long as youthful patience allows before shampooing. Homemade face paint is a fun and healthy alternative to sweaty masks. (Commercial face paint can contain lead and other undesirables.) A moisturizer with sunscreen, unscented lotion or cocoa butter acts as the base. “UVA/UVB rays are present year-round,” says Dermatologist Michael Taylor, in Portland, Maine. “Use zinc- or titanium-based products, free from fragrance, para-aminobenzoic acid, parabens, bisphenol A, phthalates and other harmful ingredients.” Natural food coloring, spices or other pantry items provide colorants. Turmeric makes a bright yellow; raspberry, blackberry or beet juice yields pink or red; mashed avocado and spirulina show up green; blueberry juice

For the youngest treaters, hold an afternoon party with games and an outdoor wildlife/leaf hunt. “Plan a scavenger hunt or arrange stuffed toys to be knocked over with balls,” suggests Pamela Layton McMurtry, author of A Harvest and Halloween Handbook, and mother of seven in Kaysville, Utah. “Older kids will love a block party. Solar twinkle lights can mark the perimeters. Plan for a potluck and emphasize healthy choices. Games with prizes like wooden toys, juices, raisins or gluten-free crispy rice cakes take the focus off of candy. Tweens like progressive parties: appetizers at one house, dessert at another and music or scary movies at a third.” “Disguise healthy snacks as scary, gross foods,” suggests Rosie Pope, a parenting style leader and former reality TV personality in Ridgewood, New Jersey. “Homemade grape or orange juice popsicles with a small gummy worm inside are popular.” Pope likes to decorate cucumber and apple slices with raisins, dried cranberries, blueberries and pretzels adhered with organic peanut butter to mimic crawly creatures. Black spaghetti colored with squid ink can simulate boiled witch’s hair. Spinach linguini masquerades as swamp grass. Look for gluten-free varieties. Prepare peeled grapes for green eyeballs. “Cover party tables with a patchwork of fabric remnants,” advises McMurtry. She also suggests a DIY taco area or cat-and-scarecrowshaped pizzas. Use sliced olive or cherry tomato eyes, shredded cheese hair and a red pepper smile. Prepare a cheesy fondue with whole-grain bread. Individually wrapped popcorn balls studded with bits of fruit can be great take-home desserts for guests.

Vitamin C for Cancer Treatment by Dr. Jonathan Psenka

V

itamin C is good for us, and the health benefits of this vitamin range from fighting the common cold to helping speed trauma recovery by strengthening connective tissues and its ability to stabilize mast cells and prevent allergic reactions. Most famously, vitamin C in the form of eating limes helped the British Navy prevent scurvy while crossing the Atlantic, and thus earned them the nickname of “limey”. Vitamin C enjoys an almost celebrity status in the vitamin world. Very few vitamins reach the height of its popularity and nearly all other vitamins have ongoing debates regarding either their safety or usefulness. Nobody is arguing the fact that taking large oral doses of vitamin C may require some people to keep a close proximity to the bathroom. However, this action can also make vitamin C useful in situations where things become backed up and it becomes difficult to move things along. One very interesting action of vitamin C is its ability to selectively damage and destroy cancer cells. This action of vitamin C is due to the fact that it is absorbed into our cells by the same receptors that absorb sugar. This is important because the most basic definition of cancer is “uncontrolled cellular division.” This means that cancer cells keep making new cancer cells, despite the body’s attempts to stop the process. All of this increased cellular reproduction requires energy, and one of the ways in which cancer cells produce energy is by metabolizing sugar. Cancer cells require so much energy that they can actually increase the number of sugar receptors on their surface in order to out-compete normal cells for the sweet stuff.

When a person receives intravenous vitamin C, the sugar receptors start pumping the vitamin C into cancer cells. Once that vitamin C is inside the cancer cell, a series of chemical reactions occur which ultimately produce a large quantity of electronstealing free radicals inside the cancer cells. With all of these damaging free radicals being generated inside the cancer cell, the cell’s defense systems become overwhelmed and fatal damage is inflicted. It’s interesting to note that this sort of free radical-mediated damage is also how many conventional cancer treatments work, with one big exception. Vitamin C does not adversely affect normal cells. In fact, high-dose intravenous vitamin C IVs are nearly free of adverse treatment-related side effects. While some of the vitamin C will surely end up inside of normal cells, it is broken down into substances like oxygen and

water. Higher doses of IV vitamin C can cause a headache in dehydrated people, and some may experience hypoglycemia when receiving them. Both the potential headaches and the hypoglycemia can easily be avoided by taking the proper steps. Additionally, on a systemic level, vitamin C improves the functioning of the immune system, promotes increased connective tissue strength and has been shown to improve quality of life and longevity in people fighting cancer. Although vitamin C IVs are both safe and effective, they are rarely recommended outside of the naturopathic medical office due to concerns regarding compatibility with conventional treatments. But that has been addressed by research showing that the addition of vitamin C may actually improve the effectiveness of conventional treatments. Our current success rate with cancer is not so good that we can afford to overlook a non-toxic, cancer selective treatment proven to improve the quality of life in people fighting cancer.

Listen to Your Hormones by Dr. Paul Stallone

Hormones are essential for almost every single function in our body, from metabolism to mood. We use hormones to communicate between organs and other bodily tissue and regulate physiological and behavior activities. Hormones intertwine with each other, creating a delicate balance that must be maintained. One unbalanced hormone will eventually cause others to follow suit. Hormone deficiencies disrupt homeostasis, or balance, which produces symptoms like weight gain, hot flashes, depression/anxiety, joint pain, low libido, fatigue and skin problems. These symptoms are a physical indicator that our body isn’t functioning properly, signaling the need to seek treatment.

E

38

arly-stage hormonal imbalances can be treated simply with a few lifestyle changes. Eating whole organic, non-GMO foods is a great way to give the body the

nutrients it needs to heal itself. Healthy forms of saturated fats like coconut oil and avocado provide healthy cholesterol, a precursor to all steroid hormones, needed for the formation of cell membranes. Beyond the point of doing it ourselves, synthetic hormones are a one-size-fits-all approach with possible dangerous side effects that have many patients nervous about treatment. Using alternative medicine has proven most effective because many options are exceedingly safe. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (bHRT) is a great treatment option for those needing to supplement their hormones. bHRT is biologically and structurally the same as the hormones produced in the body and are individually compounded and easily recognized. Before beginning treatment, it is crucial to have these levels evaluated. Testing should fall into one of these categories:

Adrenal insufficiency: A treatable condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce sufficient amounts of steroid hormones. Malfunctioning adrenals will not produce cortisol, another important hormone. Common symptoms include constant fatigue, muscle weakness, weight loss, depression, dizziness, low blood pressure and muscle aches. Patients suffering from low adrenals often have chronic stress that has overtaxed the adrenal glands. Stress management and inexpensive supplements will usually reverse this condition. Cortisol deficient: This deficiency is generally caused

from persistent stress and overworked adrenal glands. Cortisol is produced during specific times throughout the day, peaking in the morning upon waking. This hormone cycle can actually reverse, producing the highest levels at night, thus preventing sleep. Common symptoms include low blood pressure, thin/dry skin, brown spots on the face, extreme fatigue, unstable blood sugar, foggy thinking and an inability to exercise. Like the adrenals, cortisol is easy to correct with nutrition and de-stressing techniques.

Estrogen dominant: Accumulating too much estrogen is generally pretty easy because estrogen-like compounds can be found in many foods and cosmetics. Premenopausal women with too much estrogen will tend to have a pear-shaped body and menopausal women will likely be apple-shaped. Common symptoms include rapid weight gain, mood swings, ovarian cysts, memory loss, insomnia, fatigue, anemia, weepiness, lowered libido, depression/ anxiety, breast tenderness and red flush on face.

ory problems, night sweats, insomnia, bladder infections, depression, anxiety, vaginal dryness and rapid heartbeat.

Progesterone deficient: This is the most common type of hormonal deficiency and the most pivotal. Progesterone is the building block for the production of other hormones, so without the proper amount of progesterone, estrogen becomes harmful and uncontrolled. Common symptoms include bleeding between periods or long cycles, insomnia, anxiety, infertility, headaches, painful/lumpy breasts, weight gain and early miscarriage. Regulating hormones can be accomplished easily and inexpensively with the appropriately trained physician. Paul Stallone, NMD, founded the Arizona Integrative Medical Center, located at 8144 E. Cactus Rd., Ste. 820, in Scottsdale. He combines natural/alternative/conventional treatments to best fit and benefit each individual patient’s needs. Estrogen deficient: Too little estrogen is often present in menopausal women, especially if they are slim or petite. Low estrogen in some women can trigger early onset of menopause. Common symptoms include hot flashes, mem-

Finding the Missing Puzzle Pieces to Achieve Wellness by Dr. Jim Handzel

W

hen undetected nutritional imbalance, allergies or toxicities are suppressing the body’s ability to restore wellness, a suboptimal health condition can many times defy treatment. Aside from accumulations of stressors such as food sensitivities, immune challenges, heavy metal toxicities, chemical toxicities and scars, our nervous system can be altered in how it responds to our life’s stimuli. Nerves control all living cells, tissues and organs. In fact, our nervous system is comprised of the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (control and regulation) nervous systems that combined make up the autonomic nervous system. Autonomic defined is “out of our control.” Our nervous system contracts muscles, beats the heart, regulates 600 hormones in the body, removes toxicities, processes foods through the stomach and intestines, and breathes oxygen in through the lungs and carbon dioxide out. Yet, we can think about breathing and change

our respiratory rate or even hold our breath, but our autonomic nervous system will still kick in and override that to maintain an optimal state of wellness. Utilizing the delicate autonomic nervous system is where Nutritional Response Testing picks up on subtle changes. Nutrition Response Testing, also known as functional medicine, designed clinical nutrition or applied kinesiology, is a precise, specific, non-invasive method of analyzing and correcting nutritional deficiencies and imbalances in the body. In other words, Nutrition Response Testing is an advanced technique that allows doctors to zero in on exactly what organs are not functioning at 100 percent and contributing to chronic physical health challenges to address the nutritional and environmental factors that are suppressing the body’s ability to remain in balance. Nutritional Response Testing also enables the doctor to identify the specific nutrients that have been missing to allow the body to heal itself, so that patients can live more productive and satisfying lives. Keep a Weather Eye on Your Personal Barometer by Dr. Sara Penton

S

ome people claim they can predict oncoming rain storms because they experience joint pain or headaches; this could actually be true, due to a change in barometric pressure. We experience many thunderstorms during our monsoon season, which cause changes in both barometric pressure and humidity. Barometric pressure can be thought of as the weight of the air in the atmosphere. Changes in pressure can be attributed to weather systems moving through an area or a change in altitude. As far as weather is concerned, the easiest way to predict a drastic change in barometric pressure is if severe weather has been forecast; storms indicate that areas of low air pressure will be moving through. Barometric pressure can impact existing medical conditions in some people, and arthritis, swelling and in-

42

Phoenix

flammation of joints can be exacerbated when it drops. Air can also become trapped in sinuses affected by allergic sensitivities. When air pressure drops, the air trapped inside the sinuses can cause even more pain. Aside from common aches and joint pains caused by low barometric pressure, some people also experience migraine headaches that could be related to the weather. When the air pressure outside the body changes, the blood vessels inside the body tend to react by expanding or contracting, which could possibly cause a headache. Relative humidity can also cause reactions to the body, especially in those with allergy symptoms. Mold sensitivities are especially exacerbated in humid conditions due to the amount of moisture in the air. With a higher level of humidity, the air is also

more capable of suspending greater amounts of foreign substances that can cause reactions to those with allergy sensitivities. Asthma sufferers are especially at risk for adverse reactions in humid climates. Scientific studies link temperature, humidity and air pressure to arthritis, asthma, migraines and other ailments like fatigue. Researchers have also concluded that high humidity can contribute to flare-ups of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Although the reasons are not exactly clear, there is no doubt that humid days can induce feelings of sluggishness, lethargy and overall fatigue. Stay aware of atmospheric changes by checking weather reports for levels of relative humidity and barometric pressure. Weather-related websites also have a wealth of information. Sensitivities from both humidity and barometric pressure can be treated and possibly resolved with access to advanced allergy therapeutics. Breath-Taking Wisdom Six Ways to Inhale Energy and Exhale Stress by Lane Vail

W

e draw an astounding 22,000 breaths daily, but because breathing is involuntary, we often take it for granted. Transforming breathing into a conscious activity can provide amazing energy, awareness and control, and

44

dramatically improve our mental, physical and creative performances, according to Al Lee, co-author of Perfect Breathing: Transform Your Life One Breath at a Time. That’s 22,000 opportunities to choose health and wisdom every single day.

Lee paints a picture of perfect breathing: “Watch a baby breathe; it looks like there’s a balloon in the stomach that inflates and falls back down. This is belly breathing—pleasant, enjoyable and natural.” During inhalation, the diaphragm pulls down under the lungs, allowing them to expand with air and displace space in the abdomen. However, “Breathing can fall victim to the same movement dysfunction as any other skill, like running or walking,” says Nick Winkelman, director of movement and education at EXOS, an elite athletic training facility in Phoenix, Arizona. He points to “shoulder breathing”, characterized by a lifting of the shoulders with each shallow sip of air, as a common dysfunction perpetuated by too much sitting. “Hunching over the laptop or sitting in the car binds up the abdominal region and reduces the possibility of expansion there, so the breath moves higher into the chest cavity,” Lee explains. Replacing shoulder breathing with belly breathing “creates a cascade of positive effects,” says Lee, including lowering blood pressure and boosting the immune system. Deep breathing also clarifies the mind and is used in nearly every spiritual tradition to achieve deeper states of prayer, medita-

tion and contemplation, he notes. Try these healing techniques.

Six-Second Breath

Lee’s six-second breath is a simple prescription for stress that can be used anytime, anywhere. Relax the abdominal muscles and inhale for three seconds, breathing through the nose to “disinfect, filter, condition and moisturize the air before it reaches the lungs,” says Lee. Visualize the breath filling the body like a bell, with the flared bottom expanding completely around the waistline. Pause momentarily and exhale through the nose or mouth for three seconds, gently contracting the abdomen to help expel the air. Practice this whenever needed to ease stress or for five minutes daily to establish a slower, deeper breathing pattern.

Ocean Breath

The yoga breath ujjayi, or oceansounding breath, is achieved by slightly constricting the throat muscles and gently lifting the glottis, so that a soothing hiss is produced when the breath is drawn in through the nose. Dr. Richard Brown, an integrative psychiatrist, associate professor at New York’s Columbia University and co-author of The Healing Power

of the Breath, explains the benefits. “Ujjayi creates resistance to air flow, triggering receptors deep within the lungs’ alveoli, which allows more oxygen to be delivered to the cells. It also stimulates the vagus nerve input to the brain, which promotes calmness and clear thinking.”

Target Breathing

A recent study from the journal Pain Medicine found that deep, slow breathing, combined with relaxation, effectively diminishes pain. “The nervous system represents a physical or emotional trauma in an unregulated pattern of signals,” says Brown. “But the mind and breath can wash away and rewire that pattern.” Practice target breathing, a technique derived from qigong, by inhaling deeply into the belly and visualizing the breath as a ball of energy which upon exhaling can flow to the place in the body needing healing, advises Lee.

Bellows Breath

Brown has co-authored a review in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine describing the neurophysiological basis and clinical benefits of yogic breathing on depression and post-traumatic stress. Bhastrika, or bellows breath, is a mood-

lifting technique wherein one inhales vigorously through the nose while raising the arms above the head, fingers extended, and then forcibly exhales through the nose while pulling the elbows down alongside the ribs with fingers closing gently. Avoid overdoing it, instructs Brown; three rounds of 15 to 20 breaths are sufficient for healthy individuals.

4-2-10 Breathing

Anxiety attacks often generate feelings of breathlessness, and fixating on each inadequate inhalation reinforces panic. Winkelman recommends 4-2-10 breathing, a technique that emphasizes elongating exhalations. Inhale through the nose for four seconds, hold for two, and then slowly release the breath for up to 10 seconds. Lee explains that after several breaths, the brain will start to shift from reactive emotional thinking to rational problem solving. “Concentrating on the breath makes it hard to think about the future or rummage around in the past,” says Lee. “It keeps you in the moment, intimately in touch with the mind, body and emotions.” Lane Vail is a freelance writer in South Carolina. Dr. Andrew Weil

on America’s Evolution into Integrative Medicine by Andrea Schensky Williams

N

atural Awakenings had the opportunity to pose progressive healthcare-related questions to Dr. Andrew Weil, world-renowned author, founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and clinical professor of internal medicine at the University of Arizona, on the eve of the sixth biennial Symposium of Integrative Medicine Professionals, to be held October 13 to 15 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He will be the keynote speaker.

You frequently speak to the topic of integrative health and happiness. How does your book, Spontaneous Happiness, reflect that?

With diet being such a major component in affecting our emotional state of mind, what role does an anti-inflammatory diet play? There is a new body of research linking inflammation with depression that I find fascinating. The fact that the mainstream diet promotes inflammation is why I believe there may be a dietary correlation with the rise of depression in our population.

If someone suffers from depression, would you say the steps recommended in For a long time, I’ve wanted to see an Spontaneous Happiness are integrative movement start in psychol- a proactive approach or an ogy and psychiatry. It’s another field addition to management that has become dependent on drugs through medication? and is not functioning all that well to help people. There are so many more things that people need to know about maintaining emotional wellness, I think the wisdom of taking an integrative approach here is obvious.

I share information about how to wean off of medication. I’d say the book is primary; for people with mild-to-moderate depression, I would follow the information there first. For people with severe depression, it may be necessary to give antidepressant drugs, but I think that they should be used for a limited period, a maximum of one year. You should then be working to find other ways to manage the depression. There is specific information about what to do if you are on medication and how to wean off of it carefully and start these other methods.

Your presentation will take place soon after the recent passing of actor and comedian Robin Williams, which may bring about a more informed awareness of mental health. Why do you think there is such an increase in the incidence of depression? Do you feel that the increase There are many reasons for it, includin diabetes in the U.S., ing changes in diet and a breakdown in particularly its onset in communities that has greatly increased early childhood, is another social isolation and disconnection from major problem? nature. How can integrative medicine lower Americans’ healthcare costs? Integrative medicine can help reduce costs in two ways. First, by shifting the focus of health care onto health promotion and prevention, rather than disease management. Most of the diseases we are trying to manage today are lifestyle related. This is where integrative medicine shines. Second, by bringing into the mainstream treatments that are not dependent on expensive technology, and I include pharmaceutical drugs in this category. I think we’re going to be forced to change our dysfunctional approach by economic necessity, because the current healthcare system is not sustainable. Integrative medicine is in a perfect position to do that because of its emphasis on lifestyle medicine. Integrative medicine is also teaching healthcare practitioners to use inexpensive, lowtech methods of managing common diseases. Both economic drivers will help reshape mainstream medicine.

What influence can the public have in supporting such a shift? Our dysfunctional healthcare system is generating rivers of money flowing into very few pockets. Those are the pockets of big pharmaceutical companies, medical devices manufacturers and big insurers; interests that control legislators. So, I don’t think any real change is going to come from the government. The only real change will come from a grassroots movement to change the politics of all of this. Demand that insurers cover the treatments you want. Seek out integrative practitioners. Tell health practitioners you work with that integrative education is available and urge them to get up to speed in those areas. Raise your own awareness of the extent that the powerful lobbies now influence the system and why we need to see a sweeping political change.

degree, a two-year fellowship for medical doctors and programs for nurse practitioners and physician assistants. What are the benefits of adding integrative medicine to one’s practice? I think it’s what patients want and it makes the practice of medicine much more enjoyable. Many practitioners realize that they don’t have the knowledge their patients want; for instance, informed counsel about diet or uses of alternative medicine. This is a way they can gain knowledge they didn’t get in their conventional medical training. We’ve graduated more than 1,000 physicians over 10 years, supporting a robust and growing community of like-minded practitioners that stay in touch and support each other. We’re eventually hoping that we can get integrative training into all residencies. Whether you go to a dermatologist, pediatrician, gastroenterologist or psychiatrist, that doctor will have had basic training in nutrition, mind/body interactions, herbal medicine and all the rest that is now left out. We’ve also begun a program in lifestyle medicine that’s open to all kinds of practitioners, from registered dietitians to psychologists.

What reforms would you like to see in the current U.S. healthcare system? We need to change priorities for reimbursement that favor integrative medicine. At the moment, we happily pay for drugs and tests. We don’t pay for a doctor to sit with and counsel a person about diet or teach them breathing exercises. I would like to see a new kind of institution come into being that I call a healing center, where people could go for lifestyle education and management of common illnesses—somewhere between a spa and a clinic. Stays in these would be reimbursed by insurance, similar to how it’s done in Europe. Beyond that, I think it’s unconscionable that the richest nation on Earth can’t provide basic coverage to all of its citizens. Dr. Andrew Weil will be spearheading the 12th annual Nutrition & Health Conference, in Phoenix, on May 4 through 6, 2015. Combining Chiropractic and Acupuncture Energizes Health by Kathleen Barnes

hiropractic manipulation of the spine has long been a remedy for structural malfunctions such as aching backs and recurring headaches. Today, chiropractors are also treating neck pain from stress, plus tight shoulders and numb fingers from long hours of computer use. An increasing number of them are now incorporating acupuncture into their arsenal against disorders once treated by chiropractic alone, with great success.

“What if you had a nail in your foot? You can do anything to try to heal it, but until you pull the nail out of your foot, you’ll still have a recurring problem,” explains Dr. James Campbell, owner of Campbell Chiropractic Center, in East Brunswick, New Jersey, a certified diplomate and incoming president of the American Board of Chiropractic Acupuncture (ABCA). “Like removing the nail, chiropractic removes the mechani-

Combining the two modalities has been practiced for more than 40 years, although awareness of the enhanced effectiveness of doing so has been primarily realized in the eastern half of the U.S. The dual therapy is the brainchild of the late Dr. Richard Yennie, who initially became a Kansas City chiropractor after acupuncture healed a back injury shortly after World War II. An acupuncturist smuggled prohibited needles into Yennie’s Japanese hospital room in the sleeve of his kimono for treatments that ended with Yennie’s hospital discharge marked, “GOK,” meaning in the doctor’s opinion, “God only knows” how the intense back pain was healed. While Yennie went on to teach judo and establish five judo-karate schools, his greatest achievement was bringing the two sciences together in the U.S. He founded both the Acupuncture Society of America and the ABCA, affiliated with the American

Doctor of Chiropractic Michael Kleker, of Aspen Wellness Center, in Fort Collins, Colorado, is also a statelicensed acupuncturist. “I can tailor treatments to whatever the individual needs,” he says. For patients experiencing pain after spinal fusion surgery, with no possibility of any movement in their spine, Kleker finds that acupuncture helps manage the pain. “We can commonly get the person out of the chronic pain loop,” he says. He also finds the combination helpful in treating chronic migraines, tennis elbow and other chronic pain conditions. “When I started my practice in 1981, few chiropractors knew anything about acupuncture, let alone used it. Now there are more and more of us,” observes Kleker. Both Kleker and Campbell are seeing increasing numbers of patients with problems related to high use of technology, facilitating greater challenges for chiropractors and new ways that adding acupuncture can be valuable. Notebook computers and iPads have both upsides and downsides, Campbell remarks. Users can find relief from repetitive motion injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome by utilizing portable devices. However, he is treating more patients for vertigo due to looking down at screens or neck pain from lying in bed looking up while using the devices. “Blackberry thumb”, which refers to pain caused by texting, responds especially well to a combination of chiropractic manipulation of the thumb to free up the joint and mi-

He routinely informs patients about proper ergonomic positions for using traditional computers and mobile devices. He also suggests exercises to minimize or eliminate the structural challenges that accompany actively leveraging today’s technological world. In addition to chiropractors that are increasingly adding acupuncture to their own credentials, an increasing number of chiropractors have added acupuncturists to their practices. Therapy combining chiropractic and acupuncture has yet to be widely researched, but one study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine in 2012 reports the results of two acupuncture treatments followed by three chiropractic/acupuncture treatments for a women suffering from long-term migraine headaches. The migraines disappeared and had not returned a year later. Other studies show the combination therapy offers significant improvements in neck pain and tennis elbow. Campbell relates a story of the power of chiropractic combined with acupuncture, when his young son that was able to walk only with great difficulty received a two-minute treatment from Yennie. Afterward, “My son got up and ran down the hall,” he recalls. Locate a certified practitioner at AmericanBoardOfChiropracticAcupuncture.org/about-us/find-a-diplomate. Experience Sacred and Joyous Ling Guang Calligraphy by Diana Gold Holland

I

t is said that in calligraphy, the stroke offers clues to one’s personality, talents and even mood, vitality, or state of health, somewhat like graphology purports to do in the West. For many practitioners, calligraphy is much more—it is an advanced spiritual practice requiring deep concentration, balanced emotions and a deep connection with heaven to ensure that the most beautiful message and energy will flow through the characters. Thus, in its highest expression, calligraphy produces so much more than pretty pictures for the wall. It is an ancient practice than can be applied in other areas of modern life, such as healing. This holds true both for the viewer and for the practitioner. The more aligned is the writer in soul, heart, mind and body, and the higher the frequency of the writer, the higher the frequency of the technique and the more powerful the healing reflected in the stroke. Likewise, the more “at one” is the recipient, the better the message of the image is received. One of

the key exponents of the cursive, or flowing, style of Chinese calligraphy is Professor Lee Qiu Yun, a woman scholar of great distinction who now resides in Toronto and is more than 100 years old. Born and growing up in the Forbidden City of Peking, she was schooled in a unique form of one-stroke calligraphy called Yi Bi Zi (pronounced ee bee dz) by Tai Shi, preceptor to Puyi, the last emperor of China. So refined is this calligraphic art that until recently, she had been the only person ever to qualify as lineage holder and be appointed to carry on this powerful form. Lee had made a vow never to teach this sacred art form. However in 2013, Lee selected her student, Dr. and Master Zhi Gang Sha, as sole direct lineage holder. Sha is a revolutionary soul healer who brings the power of soul to humanity. Soul can heal. Soul can transform all life. With an M.D. in conventional modern medicine and early mastery of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sha has long been a renowned soul healer. He is

also a grandmaster of all of the major ancient Chinese disciplines, including tai chi, qi gong, kung fu, the I Ching and feng shui. Through 5,000-year-old lineages, he holds powerful ancient wisdom and secrets of healing, rejuvenation, longevity and the spiritual journey. Above all, he is a special chosen divine servant, vehicle and channel who brings us the treasures of divine soul power. Invoking the spirit and blessing of her own teacher, Lee performed a rite of initiation dating back millennia and formally transmitted to her successor the wisdom and power behind this special technique, as well as permission to train others that might themselves later qualify to expand and carry on the lineage. This she did after Sha’s advanced healing powers cured her of a longstanding health issue, and due to his astounding progress in mastering the art and his sincere commitment to help heal the ills of those in need wherever he travels in the world. Assured by Sha’s commitment to serve all souls of humanity unconditionally, Lee passed on this rarely taught sacred healing art of creating each word with only a single, continuous brush stroke. In Lee’s unique technique of Yi Bi Zi, there is one uninterrupted roll of the brush, one harmonious stroke, instead of any number of smaller strokes that must be combined to form a standard ideogram. Sometimes more than 20 such small strokes are needed to produce a single character. Conversely, the graceful flow of the single

Yi Bi Zi stroke introduces an element of oneness; it sends a further message of unity and oneness flowing through the character, be it light, peace, good health, prosperity, success or whathave-you. As a means for the practitioner to align soul, heart, mind and body, this technique is also a powerful form of healing. “Any word formed through Yi Bi Zi in its form, strength and purpose can be used to help the ill and those in need in any aspect of their lives,” says Lee. In Sha’s ideograms, the one stroke is further infused with a healing and transformative source field that can remove blockages at all levels of the soul, mind and body, alleviating suffering and paving the way for radical transformation of all aspects of life. “This calligraphy is not ordinary art. It is art, but it is more than art. It carries divine soul treasures, source soul treasures to remove the suffering of humanity,” says Sha. After showcasing his acclaimed Chinese calligraphy scrolls in numerous cities around the world and attracting thousands of people, Sha brings

nine Source Chinese Calligraphy to Tucson to inspire the Special Chinese Calligraphy Training participants to experience the powerful blessings contained in the calligraphies. Hosted at the Tucson Museum of Art, this special calligraphy training has been done only once before, and Sha will personally teach every one of the 200 participants to create their own sacred healing art and experience. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to connect with the sacred calligraphy scrolls featured in Sha’s newest national bestselling book, Soul Healing Miracles, in which the scrolls radiate the power of soul healing miracles to transform the lives of all that connect with them. Because Sha channels the source, he transmits blessings to the calligraphies, instantly incorporating the healing and blessing power, teachings and wisdom into these sacred scrolls. The source Chinese calligraphy scrolls create a healing field with extremely high frequency and vibration (power) to transform any aspect of life, including boosting energy, stamina, vitality and immunity, as well as healing, balancing emo-

tions, preventing sickness, transforming relationships, and bringing success to every aspect of one’s life. Each source Chinese calligraphy scroll represents one of nine sacred phrases in Chinese, transmitted from the source through Sha into the calligraphy to help humanity to nourish the soul and promote healing and transformation among Earth’s inhabitants. Sha and his Worldwide Representatives will appear from 6 to 8:30 p.m., November 4, at Changing Hands Bookstore for a special Soul Healing Miracles book signing event, followed by a free Soul Healing Miracles evening from 7 to 10 p.m., November 7, and a Soul Healing Miracles weekend from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., November 8 and 9 in Phoenix. LISA WILLIAMS Describes Life Among the Dead

L

isa Williams, host of the Lifetime network programs Life Among the Dead and Lisa Williams: Voices From the Other Side, describes her understanding of unexplained phenomena regarding her belief in life after death. When were you first aware that you could communicate with the spirit world?

I have always been open to the world of spirit, and as a child I was fascinated by death, only to realize that actually I was seeing spirits and their transition. When I was 20, I had a friend of mine who was a medium, and she told me that I could see spirit. I didn’t really believe, but she told me to try it. I concentrated really hard, 54

and I looked into a space and I “felt” that there was a father, but not a biological father, and he passed suddenly with a problem in his chest. She told me that her adoptive dad died with a heart attack.

How do the spirits communicate with you?

Well, spirits connect via our major senses that we have in our physical body. Hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste. For me, my hearing is very strong, but it depends on the spirit. If the spirit will connect via voice so I can “hear” them, then that’s stronger, but there are times, especially when I am in a foreign country, that they connect visually. But the spirits will use all senses to convey their message.

Are you ever awakened in the middle of the night with spirits wanting to speak with you?

I get asked this question all the time and I always say, “I sleep like I’m dead.” I think the last time that happened was the day before my aunt’s funeral. I opened my eyes as I hit the floor (I had been pulled out of bed) and my aunt was standing over me and said, “Make sure they play You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings,” and when I walked into the church later that day, guess what was playing...You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings.

What is the most important message that the spirit world wants to share with the living?

The consistent message I receive is that we should all love ourselves and be responsible for that love, and to open up and trust and surrender to their guidance. It’s hard in a world like ours, when we are consumed with daily life to do these things, so it’s a constant reminder. Williams will be in Scottsdale as part of the Divine Wisdom Retreat at the Doubletree Paradise Valley Resort from Nov. 7 to 9.
