Upgraded Living November

Page 1

FROM THE EDITOR There comes a time in the life of any business when you reach a crossroads... do you expand and move into new territories, or do you continue, carrying on as you had been? We were recently presented with this question, and we decided on the former. As of November 20th, there will be a new addition to the downtown Chico art and business scene; that addition will be Upgraded Living Magazine’s new headquarters. With plans to open our doors during Christmas Preview at 301 Broadway Street (diagonal from Starbucks at the old Wachovia building), we are hoping to bring something fresh to the downtown area that all of Chico can appreciate. This issue is our favorite (and biggest) yet, and it’s no surprise why. We’ve teamed up with more than 20 local businesses to give away over $12,000 in gifts and ended up meeting some amazing people along the way. Entering to win is easy, and many of you will meet these same amazing people while entering to win.

With interior design pro, Melissa Snow

Dear Melissa, I know the holidays are approaching. Do you have any fun tricks or suggestions for sprucing up my house? - RAINA

Dear Raina, I’ve noticed the warm golden days starting to turn crisp, definitely cooler nights, and the sun setting earlier each week. It is time to decorate and cozy up your home for fall. Here are some easy and inexpensive tips for bringing the beauty and bounty of fall into your home decorating and creating a warm, inviting retreat for family and friends.

Start at the Entry - Your home should say “Welcome” before even stepping into the house. Decorate your porch or your front door with fall’s bounty. Pots of colorful mums help transition from summer to fall while adding warm colors to a front porch. Tuck in favorite items like the a lantern with a candle, a galvanized bucket, an interesting box or crate or some other item that fits your personal interpretation of fall. A swag of dried corn and a casual ribbon ready the door for fall. A colorful wreath of fall leaves casually dresses an entry bench or hang it on the front door for a more traditional use. Fill an empty window box or big baskets with apples and fall leaves. Summer’s dried flowers paired with fall’s berries, leaves and vine, transition a front door from summer to fall. Rearrange & Warm-up Furnishings - If you had furniture under the windows so you could sit in the summer sun, rearrange things for fall. Pull the furniture into cozy groupings and add touches of fall color. Draw comfy

chairs up to the fireplace – perfect for an intimate chat or reading a good book. Add a warm, colorful throw across the back of a chair or sofa or toss it across an ottoman. Add a fall motif to a plain pillow or slipcover cotton summer toss pillows in snuggly fabric like corduroy, fleece, knitted or crocheted covers. Use a heavier table topper – try a quilt or an afghan instead of a cotton table cloth to help warm up the space. Notice how the addition of the afghan over the back of a chair and toss pillows help transition the lightweight chairs into a cold weather season? Light Up the Night - With fall’s longer nights you’ll be using the lights more. Top your lamps with a pine cone for a fall finial – the topper can take you right into winter too. Or consider changing the lampshade to a more textured version. Use Seasonal Art and Accessories - Whether real or photographed, natural items in brilliant fall colors or earth tones help bring autumn into your rooms. Items from

your yard (or grocery store!) become fabulous accessories when simply showcased. Colorful leaves, berries and seed pods are elevated to accessory status when purposefully showcased. If you don’t have a yard to raid, look to the kitchen, a tray of gourds and squash might add the perfect touch. Transitioning Your Home - What will you do (or have done!) to welcome fall into your home? Share your favorite trick to cozy up your home at summer’s end. Submit ideas and pictures to facebook.com/upgradedliving where we’d love to hear about and view your colorful story!

Budget Blinds by Aveed Khaki

pened in 2003 by Chico residents Tim and Kim Long, Budget Blinds currently stands as the sole locally owned and operated window coverings storefront in the area. Serving Butte and Glenn counties, as well as Tehama county as far north as Los Molinos and Dairyville, Budget Blinds has made a name for itself in the local community through impeccable customer service, fair pricing, depth of knowledge and a vast selection to choose from. With one in every two customers being a referral or repeat customer, proof of their reputation is simply in the numbers. Budget Blinds delivers more than just window coverings; they deliver security, increased energy efficiency and style. Though most might not immediately recognize it, proper window coverings are proven to be one of the most effective and least expensive ways to burglar proof

your home. By limiting a potential burglar’s ability to scan and assess the items within your home, you are in essence increasing the risk that the potential burglar must take in breaking into your home as the potential reward cannot be quantified. As burglary is not often a spontaneous crime, taking this simple measure to burglar proof your home could make all the difference. Where energy efficiency is concerned, both retaining heat in the winter and shading your home from the sun’s scorching rays in the summer become significantly easier by installing window coverings. In fact, installation of window coverings makes such a substantial difference on average, that it is immediately visible on the month’s energy bill following the installation. If that doesn’t convince you, the ability to drastically change the look of your home just might, as window coverings are also one of the most cost effective ways to change the overall

look of your home. Over the last eight years, Budget Blinds of Chico has installed over 50,000 units locally. Currently, their work can be seen at such notable businesses as Butte College, Tri Counties Bank, Feather River Hospital and Umpqua Bank to name a few. Utilizing household brands like Hunter-Douglas, Springs Window Fashions, Norman Shutters and Lafayette Window Fashions, Budget Blinds’ work goes above and beyond the standard you may receive from a big box store and has the ability to completely transform your space. Best of all though, they are locals through and through, with over eighty years of shared Chico residency between the two owners. Stop on by when you have a chance and see all of the amazing services they have to offer; make sure you tell them Upgraded Living sent you!

PLANNING for the

PERFECT (A.K.A. VACATION RETIREMENT) aving for retirement is a big-time responsibility, but you can get there. Most of us don’t realize how much time we may spend in retirement. In fact, statistics suggest that you could spend up to one-third of your life in retirement. For those of us who imagine retiring early, say at age 55, we could potentially spend more time retired than actually working. According to 2010 US Census estimates, the number of Americans living past age 85 will more than double by 2040. This means that you need to start saving earlier to help ensure your assets last a lifetime. Those of us in our 20s and 30s tend to treat retirement savings as one of those things we need to do but don’t treat it as a top priority. That tends to change quickly when the clock strikes and all of a sudden you are 40. Slight panic starts to set in as you wonder if and when you will ever have enough money to retire comfortably. Many of us think back to our “earlier years” and kick ourselves for not making retirement saving a priority. We ask ourselves, why did I only contribute 2% to my 401(k) when I could have easily contributed 4%? Did I really need those $125 jeans? Ok, a bad example because you probably did. But maybe you didn’t need the $5 latte everyday of the week – just 3 days a week. A recurring phrase that has stuck with me since childhood (thanks mom) that I find applies to most areas of life is “don’t put off ‘til tomorrow what you can do today.” Especially when it comes to investing…it can cost you!

ORO FARM TRAIL UPGRADED LIVING LIFE IN CHICO

This year’s Sierra Oro Farm Trail was the definitive October experience. Food, wine, food, beautiful scenery and more food saturated every single minute of the trek. Beginning at Maisie Jane’s California Sunshine Products in Chico, we hit every location available during our passport weekend. We left the Sierra Oro Farm Trail fully satiated and with enough stories to last us for the remainder of the year. Our only complaint? The next passport weekend is nearly a year away.

Our very own Melissa Snow along with the team at Dolce Home took first place at the 2011 Art of Dining

October 28th’s Art Of Dining Evening Gala held at the Enloe Conference Center was a veritable who’s who of the Chico medical and business communities. With over 200 visitors and a plethora of Chico’s top design experts in attendance, the ButteGlenn Medical Society Alliance put on one of the most successful events to date, raising an impressive 12

amount of money for some of Butte County’s most deserving charities. Bacio Catering provided an incredible culinary spread while Creekside Cellars kept those in attendance well hydrated. We felt honored to be in attendance and look forward to seeing what these wonderful women will plan for next year’s big event!

NAME DROPPING

DEFINING YOUR CHICO LOOK by Angela Gleason

Chico style has gone too long undefined. Store owners have gone out on a limb to keep our Northern California oasis included in what’s happening beyond the local. So what’s the latest fashion trend in Chico? Being original. And there is a roundup of shops that give you just the opportunity to do so.

Defining your style should be taken seriously, and a little name dropping might be just the push you need to confront the struggle against the ever-dreaded dressing room hair and take home what is rightfully yours: The perfect look. Whether you’re due for a whole new style, wanting to bring your current look into fall, or thinking about pumping some life back into a vintage collection, providing you with clothes you are excited to wear is a Chico boutique’s priority. It’s time to donate those skeletons in your closet to Goodwill and make room for new threads! If you have an ounce of originality you’ll want to skirt the mall and head downtown for some unique fashion finds. Unless you live under a pile of bricks, you’re tuned into Betty’s on Broadway, Konjo, and A Bit Unruly, our picks for some fashion forward holiday wear. From SoHo lounge with a smooth martini to So-Cal beach house with seafood BBQ, or Bay Area holiday bash to Ivy Street back porch soirée, bringing your look home is stitched all over downtown. For the holiday party getup, get into Betty’s. These creative beauties are flashing their Trina Turk, Nanette Lepore, BCBG and David Khan pieces. Chico’s long-running boutique breathes cocktail dresses and fine jeans for a real woman. Too stuffy for you? Go sleek-fun rebel-posh with Vince, JJ Winters, Young Fabulous and Broke at Chico’s latest pocket-

sized Barney’s: A Bit Unruly. Maxi skirts, ADA belts, oversized scarves, silks, cashmeres, (think Malene Birger) will leave you feeling rich and looking the part. Hip at 60? 20 with a taste for finer things? Simply thriving in your 30s? Get your fit on here. Adding luxury to your wardrobe is worth the dent in your wallet, and the cheerful mother-daughter pair will help you find gorgeous garments you never knew you couldn’t live without. For the feminine fix with a flair of culture, Konjo is screaming at you with color and patterns. Asking you to dare yourself to feel good in something off the local charts, this art/fashion boutique is adorned with those one-pieces to give a facelift to anything in your closet. Promoting the “I didn’t know this could look good on me” mentality, the Konjo duo keeps you on your toes with their eclectic tops and dresses at pocket change prices. Ponchos, feathers, 80s, brainlessness and local jewelry? We say yes. With a curtsy to the mall, we’re parking on Broadway to get original and get defined. Chico continues to break the mold, and thanks to some eager store owners this mesh town on the constant brink of rapid growth is still full of local seeds, but feeding on some fresh food. So, this season we say it’s time to kick up your boots, get dressed to the nines and go play with some clothes. Own some Chicouture and define your style.

t always seems to happen before we realize it’s time. The nights get chilly, colorful leaves fall onto the streets, the scent of burning wood fills the air, and decorations start appearing all around town including the candy canes that hang from the light posts Downtown. It may feel like the celebratory spirit has been creeping up on Chico, but it’s right in the middle of the holiday season already! Thanksgiving will be here and over before the month is done. And then what? Everyone who’s ever been a child knows and says it with reverence: Christmas.

For the 35th year in a row, the Downtown Chico Business Association (DCBA) is organizing an event to help the community rev up that Christmas Spirit and jump-start those Black Friday sales. Christmas Preview is happening on November 20th, 4:00 - 8:00pm (admission: free). This favorite event of DCBA members gives Downtown shops a festive open-house street party when they can throw open their shop doors and welcome everyone who likes music, food, holidays, shopping and Santa! “We strongly believe that downtown is the heart of our great community,” claims DCBA Event Coordinator, Stephanie Yunker, “and we are charged with getting people down here to enjoy everything there is to offer!” Bring your friends and your entire family! Santa will be available for pictures at 3rd and Broadway, showing off his horse-drawn carriage while he hands out gifts. Of course Christmas requires sleigh bells and

horses, so Christmas Preview will close down Broadway and Main between 2nd Street and 4th Street, as well as 3rd Street between Wall and Salem where carriage rides will be offered by TJ Farms Carriage Company. Offerings from individual businesses residing Downtown will include cookies, warm beverages, coupons, store samples, music, and special sales! The Salvation Army will be distributing donuts and apple cider out on the street. The Yule Logs will be performing in front of Duffy’s (4th & Main), and three groups of roaming carolers will be touring the area: Sound of the Valley, Children’s Choir of Chico, and Bidwell Generals. Just a few booths will be located out in the streets, belonging to sponsors and non-profit organizations that do not have a physical location in the Downtown area such as The Blaze Hit Country 103.5 and the Mix 95.1 Toy Drive. The Chico Fire Department will be on the scene, collecting donations for “Coats for Kids.” If making a donation seems like something you are compelled to do, these organizations will welcome it gladly. Year by year, more businesses are getting involved in Christmas Preview, so your favorite shop in the Downtown area just might be participating this year. The Upgraded Living staff is overjoyed to be celebrating our new shop’s Grand Opening (301 Broadway Street) during Christmas Preview. Please be sure to stop by just to say hello. We hope to meet everyone there! 17

Aaron Needham by Aveed Khaki

A Chicoan through and through, Aaron Needham was born to create art for our community. Encouraged by the guiding hands of his father (and local art icon), Mick Needham, Aaron spent his childhood thumbing through blank pages in a bound book, teaching himself to draw and experimentally finding his own style in the art world. Once out of high school, and in need of a job, Aaron decided to step into the family business and work alongside his father at Needham’s Stained Glass Studio in downtown Chico. Fifteen years later, his name has become synonymous with stained glass throughout Northern California, and his skill displayed in such notable locations as Sierra Nevada Brewery, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Bidwell Presbyterian Church in Chico . Aaron’s passion for art shines through (pun intended) in every piece he creates. Influenced by the interaction between colors that comprise his pieces and a sense

of tradition and understanding of the artists that came before him, Aaron’s work stays true to the old-world, hand-made art forms that date back hundreds, even thousands of years. Most recently, Aaron has decided to expand his art focus into the world of oil painting, further proving his multi-dimensionality as an artist. Encouraged to “go bigger” by his oil painting professor at Butte College, Simone Senat, his new work, much like the piece to the right, speaks to the more free and playful side of Aaron’s personality and heeds his professors recommendation of going “bigger”. Aaron’s work bridges generational boundaries and his experience undoubtedly sets him apart from most local artists his age. Stop by Needham’s Stained Glass Studio at 237 Broadway Street for a sneak peek at his newest pieces.

Candy Matthews by Aveed Khaki

A nomad by birth and water-colorist by trade, Candy Matthews had her beginnings in art as a young girl, doodling on anything that would commit to her pencil. After travelling the globe as an artistic sponge, and without any formal art education to speak of, Candy decided to drop roots in Chico and commit to everything our art community had to offer. After taking a watercolor class from local teacher Helen Hanna 40 years ago, Candy found her true calling and made herself a lifelong promise to paint with watercolors each and every day. 40 years later she has held true to that promise, and the continued progression of her work proves it. Drawing her influence from the outdoor markets she frequented in Tangiers, Morocco and the Phillipine islands, Candy put her experiences to work in Chico by reflecting upon our own local Saturday morning Chico Certified Farmers’ Markets. Known best for her work in this vein, her impressions of local agriculture have been sold to excited collectors locally and throughout the United States. More recently though, Candy’s work has started to explore the animal kingdom with a strong focus on birds. Her still-life images of animals both local and from afar have obtained praise throughout the art community while the intense background colorings of each piece have portrayed her foundational concept that backgrounds are just as important as subjects. Our favorite pieces by Candy, though, are her commissioned works for nursery rooms, like the hippo to the right. They’re approachable, fun and whimsical in a way that everyone can appreciate. Best of all, we feel these pieces are an amazing way to start off a young one’s appreciation of art from an early age. Needless to say, we’re enamored and we think you will be too. Add the piece to the right to your Upgraded Living collection and do yourself a favor by seeing more of Candy’s work at Avenue 9 Gallery in Chico.

Car repair with a personal touch by Aveed Khaki

here’s something about a carwreck that brings about an instantaneous cringe in those near enough to behold it, whether audibly or visually. The sound of the squealing tires, the pause on baited-breath, and the inevitable crash raises the hairs on our neck, sends our brain into a frenzy, and causes throngs of people to drop whatever they were doing and run outside to view the sight for themselves (and hopefully offer help if needed). We’ve all dreamed of cars that would someday be made of some gelatinouslike substance that could take the force of impact, keep the people inside safe, and return the car to its original structure shortly thereafter. Until this day does come though, Chicoans like Shelly Dawson are lucky to have a collision repair center like Chico’s Concours Elite around to take care of some of the stress that occurs shortly after. On a recent drive back from school, 42

Shelly’s daughter was involved in a collision that crushed the front of her Mazda. The car was towed to Concours Elite, a AAA preferred location, and the ball immediately started rolling. According to Shelly, things couldn’t have gone more smoothly. Concours arranged the rental vehicle and repair with the insurance company, provided a timely cost estimate and set up a timeline that would work conveniently within her schedule, allowing her to focus on what mattered most: helping her daughter recover from the accident. The end result? A car that was returned to Shelly’s daughter in like-new condition. Even better, the car was finished faster than expected, which gave the Dawsons time to meticulously double check a number of items with the staff at Concours Elite. They signed the paperwork and were on their way with the rest of the transaction and insurance details conveniently handled by the shop. As Shelly put it, “They were warm,

UPGRADED LIVING | NOVEMBER 2011 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

compassionate, detail oriented and made us feel cared for. I had an incredibly secure feeling working with them and this feeling allowed me to alleviate some stress and focus on what mattered most.” Where car wrecks are concerned, there are few things that matter more. With the recent hailstorms, Concours Elite has been inundated with cars not only involved in standard accidents, but those damaged by the hail itself. In parts of Chico, hail the size of quarters were pelting cars for nearly fifteen minutes, causing dents throughout their exteriors. Thankfully, this is covered by most comprehensive insurance policies and won’t raise your insurance rates should you need to make a claim! If your car was involved in this hailstorm, as many cars were, simply drive it into Concours Elite, provide your proof of insurance and watch as they magically restore your car to new. As Shelly Dawson will tell you, you’ll be glad you did.

Electrifying OUR Town

he community of Chico has a particular way of doing things. We like bargains and warranties and giving work to local people and using the barter system so no one takes advantage of anyone else. We like browsing through the little shops and making friends along the way. We like high quality products and work that’s done right. We support the proverbial underdog that’s strong in principle. These are the observations that Lindsey Glass of Wolfe Electric makes when considering what customers want. Wolfe Electric (1300 Park Avenue) is proud to be operating in Chico after more than 60 years of business. Owned by father/son contracting team, Brad and Adam Wolfe, this business specializes in all things electrical: residential projects, commercial projects, lighting options, and installation such as ceiling fans, lighting fixtures, security wiring, and landscape features. A walk through the 10,000 square foot showroom will reveal that Wolfe Electric is making an effort to bring high-quality products to Chico. An estimated 15 percent of lighting fixtures on display were made here in the United States, and each purchase comes with at least a one-year warranty. More importantly, Wolfe Electric is actively fostering a sense of community. The second phase of Enloe Medical Center’s Century Project has given Wolfe Electric an opportunity to shape the city along with other contractors in the area. The recent partnership this project has formed between Enloe Medical Center, the City of Chico, and local contractors (including Duggan Landscape, HPC Construction Inc - Concrete Contractors, and Carpenter Steve Farrar) brings Wolfe Electric on board to add special touches such as a colorful outdoor fountain in front of Magnolia Tower. Since this project is the first Enloe Medical Center expansion in thirty years, involving a large investment from the community of Chico, the addition of 44

UPGRADED LIVING | NOVEMBER 2011 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

a parking garage, Magnolia Tower, and a park is expected to make as great, or an even greater, impact on communitybuilding than the City Plaza re-design in 2006. Local projects like this one, along with an emphasis on community involvement, make Wolfe Electric and other local businesses thrive. Collaborative projects provide a place to work in a range of fields from construction to nursing. They form a network of people who have worked together, and can call on each other for future projects. They inform the businesses around town that there are local providers who can custom-order whatever products are needed. According to Lindsey Glass, these are the elements of business in Chico that Wolfe Electric refuses to compromise: physical location, custom ordering, and relationships. Not only do these values apply to interactions with other businesses, they also work for individuals – those local residents who just want something that looks good over the kitchen table or around the pool. Before making any online or corporate purchases, Lindsey Glass suggests checking with Wolfe Electric to compare deals you find online. They might have what you want right there in the showroom so you can see it all lit-up and pretty – or they probably have something even better available. Plus, they can consult with you to choose something that works in your space and then install whatever you end up choosing. It’s an all-inclusive, customer-oriented attitude. Lindsey Glass invites you to “Come in and look! Online can’t offer this stuff.”

t Upgraded Living, we always love a good follow-up story, but when the story involves something that we’re passionate towards, in this case alternative energy, well... that’s a story we can’t help but get fired up about. In August we wrote a piece about solar energy and its many benefits. In fact, we challenged Chicoans to answer our call to help change the energy climate in our area and along with it decrease the number of harmful contaminants present in the air around us. Local farmer John Thompson answered this call. After researching alternative energies for years, John found, as many people recently have, that the options for solar energy had reached a point where the cost was low enough and the efficiency high enough to make the plunge into solar energy, a logical next step for his home. He called Alternative Energy Systems Inc. (AES), a local solar energy system provider, to set up a consultation. What AES presented to John amazed him. “Reputation and referrals are everything,” he said, “After seeing the list of installs and names of the people they had worked with, I realized how many of my friends had already used AES. So I called each of them and ended up finding how impressed they were with the service, in fact, I didn’t find one dissatisfied customer. Everyone mentioned that AES delivered on what they promised and that there was no cleanup involved afterwards, just long-term savings. So I decided to give it a try.” The staff from AES visited John’s house and explained everything very clearly, providing him with the different options available for his home: an outright purchase plan or a lease. John decided to go with the lease, foregoing the tax perks

UPGRADED LIVING | NOVEMBER 2011 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

associated with alternative energy and instead signing them over as part of the lease. The beauty though, was that John was able to prepay his lease costs upfront which ended up saving him nearly 25% of the outright purchase price. Much like a lease on a car, he will be able to pay a low residual at the end of his six year term to complete the full ownership of the solar array powering his home and receive all of the perks associated with it. Perhaps best of all, John now receives one (count it: one) PG&E bill each year, and the only question is whether he’ll pay a small sum of money or receive a small sum of money, but more importantly, he’ll likely never have a surprisingly outrageous electricity bill again! From an aesthetic standpoint, it is nearly impossible to see the panels at all. Currently, 46 panels line the roof facing the backyard, providing the home with approximately 11.0 kW DC of pure, solar energy, and better yet, they’re producing full power all day, every day. The panels were placed so strategically that one can only see them if they stand along the perimeter of the backyard and look up at the house, anywhere else and they’re nearly invisible. According to John, “Everything they said would happen, happened. There were no hiccups, and it was the easiest install ever. They were here, they were pleasant and their installers were professional.” The panels were installed in two days and the entire process took less than two weeks; an impressive feat in-and-of itself. Without a doubt, John regards this as one of the best decisions he has ever made for his home; with the savings he’s about to start seeing on his electricity bill (to the tune of approximately $5,520/year) and as for the positive change he’s making for our community, we can’t help but agree.

Empire Coffee by Aveed Khaki

estled away on 4th and Orange streets sits a quaint, old, empire builder train car; one that has decided to neglect the obvious advancements that have sprung up around it and instead remain adamant in its stance that the mid 1940s are still upon us. Perhaps having found its dream home on a cross-country trek or some other story of fancy, this particular train car has planted its roots on the east side of the old Chico Railroad Station that is now home to the Chico Art Center. Conveniently, as many an artisan would agree, this permanent but unofficial extension of one of Chico’s most well-regarded art centers happens to be home to one of Chico’s most eclectic and underground cafes: Empire Coffee. Fair trade driven and organically produced, the coffee served at Empire (above) Empire Coffee’s empire builder train car sits stoically at the corner of 7th and orange. (below) Empire Coffee’s menu includes more than just the normal coffee expectations. Their tea menu is astounding. 50

Coffee not only tastes good, but feels good as well; no guilty conscience, just purely brewed, unadulterated bliss. Empire Coffee is also home to thirty-six different types of tea, a venerable force in allthings-tea locally, and a hot spot to pick up a present for that certain tea connoisseur on your list. As those experienced in travel via locomotion have undoubtedly found for themselves, there is something simply magical about time spent on a train. Whether it be the picturesque landscapes passing by in perfect rhythm, or the hum of the tracks underneath your feet... there is something there; something mysterious but strangely comforting. It’s magic, and even though this particular train car is no longer of the mobile variety, it packs no less. Visitors can often be found staring out

the windows at the static landscape as if it were, in fact, moving by, and a visit during a rainy day is an experience in-and-of itself. Beware, the plan for a quick drop-in often turns into a day-long visit, and assuming you have the time, you’ll be glad it did. Whether the plan is to enjoy a cup of warm comfort in solitude while staring out upon our fair town or to join the groups of excited patrons for some live music or game and movie nights, Empire Coffee has a bit of something for everyone. Their Wi-Fi is free (sorry 1940s) and they never charge extra for soy. Probably best of all though, when it comes to magic, it’s on the house. Visit Empire Coffee at 434 Orange Street, next to the train tracks and Chico Art Center.

Bacio Catering by aveed khaki

Photographs by Kim James acio Catering stands out as a beacon of all things right with our local culinary community. A mainstay of the Chico catering scene for the past 27 years, their success is an inspiration and a sign that hard work truly does pay off. Structured, dynamic and exceptionally reputable throughout town, their blend of exquisite service and upscale cuisine has earned them the coveted top tier answer to the question “Who should cater my event?” From wedding receptions to corporate functions and private parties, Bacio has proven itself time and time again in professionalism, presentation and flavor. Bacio Catering is more than its name implies, though. Opening its Carry Out Counter and Deli Style Eatery in 2008, Bacio invited local residents to revel in tastes previously confined to catered events. The menu is seasonal with a healthy twist and the majority of dishes are made from locally grown, organic ingredients all created in their catering headquarters. Best of all, most can be purchased by the pound, pint or plate making it the perfect solution for a quick lunch, a week night family meal or a “do it yourself ” dinner party We recently found ourselves in a classic Chico dining dilemma: two friends driving through town playing the “where-do-you-want-to-eat-Idon’t-know-where-do-you-want-to-eat?” game. With no end in sight and approximately one-quarter tank lower than when we started, we found Bacio on the corner of 19th and Park Avenue and both agreed we’d always wanted to give the place a try. From the delicious aromas filling the air to the selected decor, we knew we had made the right choice, leaving us with only one final dilemma... what to order. Once you’ve stopped in, you’ll know that this is no easy decision. After what we’re sure seemed like an eternity to our cashier, we decided to share the “The Sandwich”, their award winning, one and only sandwich fashioned after the street food favorite, Vietnamese Banh Mi. Oversized and chock full of either free range chicken or Llano Seco’s organic pulled pork, it’s topped with a creamy jalapeño slaw with cilantro and mint...Totally addictive. We also ordered their deluxe “Grown Up” Mac & Cheese and Curried Chicken Salad with toasted cashews. Sweet, savory and delightfully filling, our selections confirmed one thing positively, Bacio Carryout is the end all answer to the classic Chico dining dilemma. Whether your needs call for a full-service catering extravaganza or you simply need to find proof that some eateries still place the importance of their patrons’ experience above all else, you’ll find that Bacio Catering comes through in spades. Their food is top notch, their service is impeccable and their attention to detail (both in design and taste) is a thing of perfection. Do yourself a favor and stop by today; believe us when we say you’ll be glad you did.

Below (from top to bottom): Bacio Catering’s eclectic decor welcomes visitors while their menu causes even the most discerning of mouths to water. (next) Bacio Catering begins kitchen prep for the day, creating such masterpieces as the three fan favorites below.

WHAT IS HOME STAGING AND HOW CAN IT HELP ME SELL MY HOME BY BONNIE CONRAD

When the housing market is hot and sellers are in charge, all you need to do is put your home on the market and wait for the offers to start pouring in. But when the housing market turns challenging, selling your home for a good price becomes a lot more of a challenge. In a difficult real estate market there are far more homes up for sale than there are willing buyers, and that means that you need to do everything you can to make your own home stand out from the crowd. Staging your home properly is one of the most effective ways to make your home look like the cream of the crop. The right staging can make your home rise to the top of the real estate market, and that can help you get top dollar in even the most difficult of real estate markets.

What is Home Staging?

The term home staging generally refers to the art of making your home look its best. When you stage your home, you invite buyers to picture themselves in your home, and that can help you get

6

the offers that lead to a quick sale. When the home is staged properly, potential buyers will be able to see themselves in your home, and on an unconscious level those home shoppers will have already begun thinking of your house as their home. Home staging works on a practical level by making your home look its best, but it also works on an emotional level by fostering a strong connection between potential buyers and your home.

Exterior Home Staging

Staging your home should begin long before those potential buyers step through the front door. The landscaping in front of your house is an essential part of home staging, and potentially one of the most important. When considering the importance of exterior home staging, just keep in mind that many potential buyers simply drive around the neighborhood looking for their new place to live. The first thing those drive-by buyers see is the landscaping in front of your home. Something as simple as an attractive flower bed or hanging plant by the mailbox can make a huge impression

UPGRADED LIVING | NOVEMBER 2011 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

on those potential buyers, and encourage them to stop by for a private visit.

Interior Home Staging

Staging your home begins on the outside, but it does not stay there. For best results that staging should extend to the interior of your home as well. When staging your home, the first thing you should do is eliminate the clutter that could turn off potential buyers and make your home look smaller than it is. Move those unwanted items to a storage shed or garage, then arrange the furniture in each room to make that room look as spacious, elegant and roomy as possible. You can use simple and inexpensive design elements to make those rooms look larger and more inviting. Something as simple as placing a large wall mirror behind the couch makes your living room look larger and more elegant. Placing your bed on an angle helps create a modern feel and makes the room look for interesting for potential buyers. These simple updates cost little or nothing, but they can make a huge difference in how your home looks to potential buyers.

LIVE IN YOUR DREAM HOME TODAY! BY JENNIFER SERNA AND JESSICA MACKENZIE

hen you bought your home years ago did you think your ‘ideal’ home was out of reach? Well, today’s market just might be the perfect opportunity for you to acquire that home of your dreams! Maybe you settled for a home that met your needs at the time. Maybe you just underestimated the amount of space you might need! And now you find yourself constantly tripping over people and stuff and losing things in the overflowing closets. Does it make you feel disorganized and a little bit crazy? What might your life look like if you had more space? Or that gourmet kitchen? Or an extra bedroom or home office?

With prices lower than before, your dream home may well be within reach! Is that an opportunity you could take advantage of? When you sell your current home and purchase a home in today’s market, you can actually make more money on the purchase than you will potentially loose on the sale! You have the ability to purchase towards the bottom of the market and watch the equity grow faster as prices move up in the future. It’s called a buyer’s market for a reason! You can use today’s market opportunity to move away from the pain and clutter of a home that doesn’t fit your needs any longer and move towards the pleasure of a home that fulfills your dreams.

AND YOU MAY NOT EVEN HAVE TO SELL FIRST! o you think about moving but worry you can’t get your price or that the house may not be worth what you owe … or you just don’t want to hassle with selling your current home first? Try changing hats! Become a real estate investor and begin building wealth for the future. Many times, people in your situation decide to keep their current home as an investment property and also get to live in their dream home.

Today’s rental market allows many homeowners to break even or even generate positive cash flow. The average rent for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in Chico is around $1200. Take a look at your particular situation – perhaps you could add another component to your retirement portfolio this year! Just like with owning your own home, there are many tax benefits available for owners of income property. Be sure to ask your personal accountant how these tax breaks

may benefit you! So, if any of this gets you thinking, and you’d like to know how to take advantage of these opportunities, talk to your real estate professional. If you don’t have one, we’re happy to help. And remember: When the real estate market shifts, it creates opportunities. There is money to be made in every real estate market. What are the opportunities for you or someone you may know today?
