Gabby Douglas: Championing the Future

At Toys“R”Us, Inc., one of our most beloved projects is publishing the annual Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids®, a resource featuring specially selected toys that aid in the development of children with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities.

We are delighted that the cover of the 2013 edition of the Guide features Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas, the U.S. Women’s Artistic gymnast who made history at the 2012 London Summer Olympics when she won gold medals in both the team and individual all-around competitions. Gabby’s introduction to her favorite sport was through a simple cartwheel as a three-year-old. The rest is history.

Since 1994, we have partnered with the National Lekotek Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world accessible to children of all abilities, to assess the play value of hundreds of toys for children with special needs. Through therapeutic play sessions, this organization investigates skill-building traits inherent in each toy that appears in the Guide and assigns skill-building icons to each item to help parents, friends and caregivers identify those toys most suitable for the child in their life. This year’s Guide also includes a section highlighting the all-new Toys“R”Us App Guide for Differently-Abled Kids.

Gabby is now helping cheer on future Special Olympics competitors. The Special Olympics Young Athletes™ program introduces kids to the world of sports and offers children, ages 2-7 who have intellectual disabilities, the opportunity to play together while developing critical early cognitive, social and motor skills. To view a message from Gabby Douglas, scan this code with your phone. Data rates may apply.

I Spy Preschool Game Briarpatch “I spy a horse and a choo-choo train.” “I spy a shovel and a big rubber duck.” “I spy a super fun, educational game!” The game concept is simple. See the words. Then, match the pictures. Best of all, no reading is required! Children practice beginning reading and memory skills as they try to match a riddle card to a picture card. If the puzzle pieces fit together, the answer is correct! Before play begins, talk about the photos on the cards to provide opportunities for language enhancement and to help familiarize children with the objects at hand. Children can play alone or with others to boost game etiquette, turn taking and cooperative play skills. “I spy a family game night!” 495433

The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game Educational Insights Slip learning into play in a very sneaky way! This simple strategy game helps kids squirrel away fine motor, manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, counting and color matching skills as they spin the spinner and use the special Squirrel Squeezers to pick up the colorful acorns and place them in the correct color-coded opening in their log. The first one to fill a log wins! You can also turn the log over to create an open dish for players who have less refined manual skills. This reduces the precision needed and allows players to use their fingers to transfer the acorns, decreasing frustration and increasing chances for success! 723417 52

These tips were created by Toys“R”Us, Inc. with guidance from leading safety and special needs organizations Through the magic of play, all children can experience victories, imagine new worlds and share the joy of learning. But accidents can happen, and rates of accidental injury are higher among children with special needs. This includes children who have physical and psychological disabilities, and is especially true for children who have cognitive, emotional and social limitations. While basic safety rules apply to all children, regardless of ability, the delivery of the message should be tailored to ensure that a child who has a disability truly understands and internalizes how to play safely. To make sure playtime is a positive, memorable learning experience for your child, the following is a list of tips to help minimize playtime risks among children with special needs: • Never Leave a Child Unsupervised: It is especially critical that a child with special needs is supervised properly at all times by an adult or trusted caregiver. • Read Labels for Ability: Check toy packages for age grading, but choose toys that correspond with a child’s learning level rather than merely matching a toy with his or her actual age. Toys that are misused or inappropriate for a child’s particular abilities can pose a risk of injury. •

Survey the Play Area: Designate a specific area of the home for regular playtime, one void of hazards such as electrical wires across the floor that a child could trip over, hanging cords that could cause strangulation and pools or windows that a child could fall in/through. Safety gates or other barriers can also be helpful in keeping children away from areas unfit for their age or abilities.

• Establish Concrete Rules: Before playtime begins, discuss basic guidelines about what areas are off limits (i.e., the street, roof or pool). Make the message clear by saying, “Never go past this line without Mommy” and “Yell, ‘HELP!’ if you are hurt, lost or scared.”

Othello Mattel Takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master…Othello is the classic game where the lead can change hands from play to play – and strategy is everything! Players employ problem solving and strategic thinking skills as they flank the discs of the opposing player between two of their own. Once captured, the double-sided discs are flipped over and become the opposite color. The player with the most pieces of their color facing up wins! The black and white discs against the blue game board offer a high-color contrast that engages visual attention. And, the various game levels provide challenges everyone can meet! Includes 64 discs, game board, 2 disc holders and instructions. 603405 62

Use Visual Warnings: Post notes with phrases such as, “Don’t Touch!” and “Off Limits!” on toys for older children, as well as power tools, the stove, kitchen drawers or any other potential source of injury; doing so can help a child who has developmental challenges distinguish between an appropriate toy and an object that may be dangerous.

Review and Repeat: After setting playtime rules, create visual reminders to post somewhere in the house or play area to serve as a constant reminder to the child. Also, ensure a child grasps the message by prompting him/her with hypothetical situations such as, “What do you do when a ball rolls into the street?” and “What could happen if you play near the pool?”

Prepare for Off-Site Play Dates: When scheduling a play date out of the home, pack a first-aid kit for the guardian to carry and a Child ID package to put in the child’s pocket or backpack, inclusive of the child and parent/guardian’s name, and emergency contact information and instructions (i.e. allergies, illnesses/disabilities and medicinal protocol).

Safe Play Tips for Children with Special Needs

Safe Play Tips for Children with Special Needs

Telestrations

• Safe Storage: Teach children to put toys away so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Store an older child’s toys in a separate storage bin and regularly check for toys that may become worn, damaged or have missing parts. • Avoid Trigger Toys: For children who are prone to seizures, it’s best to avoid spinning or flashing toys. Opt for toys that have volume control for children who are adversely affected by loud noises. And make sure children have the postural stability to utilize ride-on vehicles and wagons. 63
