DAYS 3–5 I KYOTO, JAPAN Arrive in Kyoto, a former capital of imperial Japan. Explore its UNESCO World Heritage–listed temples, palaces, and gardens, including Kinkakuji—the Golden Pavilion—and Nijo Castle. Learn about Noh theater or try Zen meditation at Tenryuji temple before dinner and a maiko geisha performance. DAYS 6–7 I GOBI OR GORKHI-TERELJ NATIONAL PARK AND ULAANBAATAR, MONGOLIA Arrive in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar, and choose one of two options. Fly by private charter to the Gobi desert and settle into traditional ger tents. Meet a shaman, walk the Moltsog Els sand dunes, and visit the Flaming Cliffs with a nomadic family. Then witness a demonstration of the traditional Naadam festival. Or head to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park to go horseback riding, meet a nomadic family, and visit the Genghis Khan Statue Complex. DAYS 8–9 I SAMARKAND, UZBEKISTAN A vibrant outpost on the Silk Road, Samarkand was an oasis where science, music, religion, and commerce thrived. See mosaic-covered madrassas, and visit the Gur-e Amir mausoleum and the Ulugh Beg Observatory. Tour the Afrasiyab Museum and attend a papermaking workshop, or stroll through the bustling Siab Bazaar. DAYS 15–16 I LONGYEARBYEN, SVALBARD, NORWAY Land in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. Tour its main city, Longyearbyen, before dinner with a polar bear guard. Explore Svalbard on a variety of excursions: go fossil-hunting along a glacier, cruise among fjords to a renowned ghost town, explore by electric bike, visit Svalbard’s first brewery, or take a polar permaculture tour. Then enjoy a midnight sun cruise on Isfjorden.
