Te wyraziste artystyczne osobowości tworzą muzykę kreatywną, świeżą i czerpiącą z wielu stylistycznych źródeł. Formacja wraca do Polski z najnowszym materiałem, który już wkrótce ukaże się na drugiej płycie zespołu. Artyści jazzowi najczęściej swoje kariery rozpoczynają jeszcze na studiach. To czas, w którym najłatwiej założyć zespół, organizować próby i brać udział w konkursach, a w przypadku zdolnych studentów – wygrywać konkursy i pracować nad materiałem na debiutancką płytę. Pierwsze formacje powstają z czystej potrzeby tworzenia i z miłości do muzyki. Czasem te doświadczenia uczą więcej niż zajęcia prowadzone przez wykładowców w akademickich murach. Tego idealnego momentu na realizację pierwszych muzycznych marzeń nie przegapili członkowie chuffDRONE, a miejscem, w którym narodziła się formacja był Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität w Linzu. Po siedmiu latach od powstania kwintet nie jest już studenckim projektem, lecz dojrzałym zespołem. Zmienił się jego skład, ewoluował styl, ale filozofia pozostała – to wciąż grupa bez lidera, w której decyzje są podejmowane wspólnie, a nowe kompozycje może zaproponować każdy z muzyków. Zespół, tak jak to było w latach studenckich, służy za platformę do nieskrępowanej twórczości dla piątki wyrazistych osobowości. Efekt? Jego muzyka wciąż brzmi świeżo i kreatywnie.

Już w 2013 roku chuffDRONE intensywnie koncertował na festiwalach i w austriackich klubach, a także odniósł pierwszy ważny sukces. Formacja zdobyła BAWAG P.S.K. Next Generation Jazz Award. To cenne trofeum, ponieważ zgodnie z zasadami do konkursu mogły przystąpić tylko te zespoły, które otrzymały nominację od profesorów z austriackich uczelni, a zwycięzcę wybierało jury złożone z muzyków, dziennikarzy i wykładowców. Poza nagrodą pieniężną kwintet otrzymał możliwość zaprezentowania się przed liczną i wyrobioną publicznością zgromadzoną w najsłynniejszym austriackim klubie jazzowym – Porgy & Bess. Zespół wykorzystał tę szansę na tyle skutecznie, że wciąż jest regularnie zapraszany do tego wiedeńskiego lokalu. Kilka miesięcy po zdobyciu nagrody muzycy zarejestrowali materiał na debiutancką płytę, którą zatytułowali po prostu chuffDRONE. Krążek ukazał się w katalogu wytwórni JazzWerkstatt i trafił na półki sklepowe w 2015 roku. Kompozycje znajdujące się na tym albumie to muzyka progresywna – artyści nie oglądają się wstecz, raczej poszukują nowych jazzowych brzmień. W twórczości chuffDRONE nie brakuje kontrastów: od utworów nawiązujących do szlachetnej kameralistyki, przez krwiście jazzowe współbrzmienia, po swobodną, niemal freejazzową improwizację. Kwintet gra energetycznie, ale nie zapomina o przestrzeni i pięknych melodiach. Debiutancki album zebrał bardzo pozytywne recenzje, a grupa zaczęła występować także poza granicami kraju. Ważnym momentem w karierze chuffDRONE był udział w 12. Points Festival – co roku w tej imprezie muzycznej uczestniczy tylko tuzin najciekawszych młodych zespołów (wybieranych z setek zgłoszeń), reprezentujących różne europejskie kraje. Na koncerty, które w każdej edycji odbywają się w innym miejscu na Starym Kontynencie, zapraszani są czołowi promotorzy, organizatorzy festiwali oraz dziennikarze. Możliwość zagrania przed taką publicznością jest dla młodych artystów dużą szansą na zaistnienie, a występ austriackiej grupy został świetnie przyjęty. Kwintet ze swoją muzyką prezentował się zresztą nie tylko w Europie, lecz także za oceanem, gdzie pojechał na zaproszenie Jazzfestival Buenos Aires.

W składzie zespołu są obecnie trzy jego założycielki: saksofonistka i klarnecistka Lisa Hofmaninger, kontrabasistka Judith Ferstl oraz perkusistka Judith Schwarz. Ponad rok temu zmieniły się dwie osoby w obsadzie chuffDRONE – na saksofonie altowym gra Robert Schröck, a przy fortepianie siedzi Jul Dillier. Wraz ze zmianami personalnymi ewoluował charakter muzyki, również dlatego, że Dillier gra na fortepianie preparowanym i tym samym korzysta z nieszablonowych technik wykonawczych (m.in. używa magnesów). Austriacka formacja szanuje jazzową tradycję, ale wciąż poszukuje niekonwencjonalnych rozwiązań, dzięki czemu wypracowała oryginalny styl. W sierpniu chuffDRONE zarejestrował materiał na drugą studyjną płytę, która być może jeszcze w tym roku ujrzy światło dzienne. To właśnie z najnowszymi kompozycjami Austriacy przyjeżdżają na 16. Jazztopad Festival. Repertuar tworzony przez kilka osób zahacza o wiele odłamów muzyki improwizowanej, jednak wszystkie kompozycje, niezależnie od tego, w którą stronę zmierzają, zawsze są wykonywane z wielką wirtuozerią.

The five musicians that make up chuffDRONE are searching for new jazz sounds and are determined not to look backwards. These artistically expressive personalities combine to create creative, fresh music that draws on many styles. The ensemble returns to Poland to perform their newest material, which will soon be released on their second album. Jazz artists generally begin their careers during their studies – this is a time when it’s easier to find time to form a band, organise rehearsals and take part in competitions. In the case of particularly talented students, they also win those competitions and work on the material for a debut album. Their first ensembles are founded out of pure love for music, and the need to create. Sometimes, these experiences can teach students more than the university lectures do. chuffDRONE didn’t waste this ideal moment to make their early musical dreams come true, and the band started to take shape while the members were studying at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität in Linz. Seven years later, the quintet is no longer a student project but a mature ensemble. The line-up has changed and the style has evolved, but the group’s philosophy has stayed the same – this is still an ensemble without a leader, where musicians make decisions together and craft their own compositions. Today, just as in their student years, the ensemble is a platform for the unbounded creativity of five powerful personalities. The result? Their music is still fresh and innovative. By 2013 chuffDRONE had already given numerous concerts at festivals and Austrian clubs, and this was the year when they had their first important success when they received a BAWAG P.S.K. Next Generation Jazz Award. This was a valuable and important trophy; competition rules dictate that participation is limited to ensembles nominated by the professors of Austrian universities, with the winner being selected by a jury composed of established musicians, journalists and lecturers. As well as a financial award, the quintet was also given the opportunity to perform in front of a sizeable and refined audience at one of Austria’s most famous jazz clubs, Porgy & Bess. The performance was so successful that the group has been invited to this Viennese venue several times since. Several months after receiving the award, the musicians recorded the material for their debut album, titled simply chuffDRONE. The album was released by JazzWerkstatt and went on sale in 2015. The music on it is progressive – the artists certainly don’t look back, instead preferring to search for new jazz sounds. chuffDRONE also don’t shy away from contrasts: their compositions make reference to everything from noble chamber music, through dense jazz harmony, to flexible almost free-jazz-like improvisation. The quintet has energy, but doesn’t forget about concepts of space and beautiful melodies. Their debut album received very positive reviews, and that led to the group starting to perform abroad. An important moment in their career was the 12 Points Festival, an annual event that gathers just a dozen of the most interesting ensembles (selected from hundreds of submissions), representing various European countries. Audiences at the festival concerts – which take place in a different Old Continent location for every edition – include leading names in promoting music, organising festivals and music journalism. The chance to perform in front of that kind of audience was a tremendous opportunity for the young artists to make themselves known – and indeed their concert was very well received. Soon the quintet had the chance to present their art not only in Europe but also on the other side of the Atlantic, the musicians having accepted an invitation from the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival organisers. The current ensemble line-up includes three founding members: the saxophonist and clarinettist Lisa Hofmaninger, the bassist Judith Ferstl and the drummer Judith Schwarz. Over a year ago, two new members became part of chuffDRONE – Robert Schröck on the alto saxophone, and Jul Dillier on the piano. Along with the change of musicians came the evolution of the music – for example, Dillier plays the prepared piano and favours unconventional performance techniques (such as using magnets). The Austrian ensemble respects jazz traditions, but still searches for unique solutions – this is how they have developed their original style. In August, chuffDRONE recorded the material for their second studio album – which may yet be released this year. And it is these newest compositions that the Austrian artists will be bringing to the 16th Jazztopad Festival. Their programme, composed by several people, includes various styles of improvised music; but all compositions, regardless of where they come from and where they lead, are always performed with virtuosity.
