601.605.8600 • Fax: 601.605.8601 www.epaofms.com The Electric Power Associations of Mississippi serves as the unified voice of all electric cooperatives in Mississippi. While we do not generate or distribute power, we represent the people who do, the 25 electric power associations and one generationand-transmission electric power association. We function as a united service organization for the mutual benefit of all electric power associations and their members. The association’s staff is composed of skilled professionals who provide a wide range of specialized services to member-systems at a state level. The services are designed to assist local systems in serving their own members more effectively and economically. Among the areas of the association’s expertise are: a government relations program that monitors legislative action on the state and national levels; member relations; programs that emphasize youth involvement and leadership; safety and loss control programs; employee training programs; communications and public relations, including the publishing of Today in Mississippi (the largest circulated publication in the state) which has a circulation of 465,000; employee credit union; coordination of insurance programs; and much more. Our most important function is representing the more than 771,900 members who receive their electric service from an electric power association. In a cooperative manner we are committed to ensuring that each member is provided quality electric service at the least possible cost. It is with this commitment that we join forces with each association in doing collectively what cannot be accomplished individually.

Mississippi’s electric power associations have and will continue to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to common goals and help ensure a brighter future for electrification in Mississippi. 3

Serving You...

Our beginning. Our success. Our future. The Electric Power Associations of Mississippi (statewide) exists solely to serve efficiently and effectively. Our employees, some of whom have served you for decades, are deeply committed to your satisfaction. We are proud to help support rural electrification in Mississippi because we believe in the value of the program to Mississippians. Every service we offer is tailored to our system’s unique needs, from communications to government relations to emergency power restoration. And we proudly serve as the voice of Mississippi’s electric power associations. We have a great story to tell and I’m proud to share it with others. Statewide has an impressive history of service to electric cooperatives in the state since 1943. The original purpose was to form a group large enough to comply with insurance requirements to secure group insurance for the employees of the member associations. During this early organizational period, the group launched a statewide publication and established a safety program for member associations. As the statewide association grew, it offered expanded services. By 1963, services included extensive work in the broad field of public, member and government relations; and a credit union for employees of member associations. In addition to being responsive to our members’ needs and providing quality services, our goal is to be the respected, unified voice of all electric power associations throughout Mississippi. And now, more than ever, people are listening! Working together, we develop a mission statement and implement a plan to ensure the message will be delivered by a powerful voice.

STATEWIDE ASSOCIATION GOVERNMENT RELATIONS The power of our organization’s voice is evident by the success of our government relations team. They are one of the most respected lobbying groups in Mississippi. The department examines hundreds of state and federal issues annually to determine the potential impact on electric power association members. They enjoy close working relationships with legislators, the Public Service Commission and state elected officials. These valuable relationships are crucial in voicing your concerns when our issues come before decision makers. We have earned their trust over the years with our open and honest voice. Your grassroots support empowers the voice of ACRE, our political action committee and a recognized leader in the political arena. This past year more than 2,000 employees and directors joined. COMMUNICATIONS Keeping co-op members informed is more important than ever; your members should hear your message unfiltered by the media. But how do you reach more than 465,000 Mississippi households and business owners? Through the pages of Today in Mississippi—the publication with the largest circulation of any in the state. Today in Mississippi presents the co-op perspective on issues affecting our industry, and the growing importance of energy efficiency. It demonstrates the deep pride we all share in being Mississippians as well as our concern for the well-being of the communities we serve. The JULY 2014

We can’t overlook those who will join our voice in the future. Our annual youth leadership program teaches high school students the importance of our electric co-op program and brings them together with state and national elected officials. It prepares them to be leaders and ensures the co-op message will be heard by the next generation. We believe strongly in its value as an investment in our future success. I

SAFETY AND LOSS CONTROL Sometimes our voice must be strong and forceful. Safety is our top concern, so we constantly stress to more than 2,900 co-op employees the importance of keeping the workplace safe for everyone. This is the job of our professional safety and training instructors. They routinely visit each system to present informative programs and provide constant reminders of the dangers of the job. We deliver life-saving safety messages to our consumers, too.

FACTS and FIGURES

I An electric power association is a cooperative independently controlled and owned by the members it serves. A member is any customer who has an account with the electric power association. As a not-for-profit, an electric power association pays capital credits to members or lowers rates when it realizes a margin at the end of the year. I A board of directors, composed of members elected by the membership, governs an electric power association. The board establishes bylaws, policies and rates that reflect the individuality and needs of the membership. As local leaders, directors are responsive to local needs. I Employees are local residents who share a personal and professional interest in the well-being of their community. They embody the cooperative spirit of community involvement by participating in worthwhile causes. I Electric power associations promote energy-efficiency programs to help their members reduce energy costs. I Mississippi’s electric power associations have mutual-aid agreements to help each other restore service to members during major power outages. They may also obtain assistance from (or offer it to) out-of-state electric cooperatives. ALCORN COUNTY

No one knows that better than a rural electric. As the competitive and regulatory challenges intensify, you look for partnerships and alliances that will strengthen your business. We hope NRTC is one of those partners. And, we share your philosophy. That’s what led us to partner with cuttingedge smart grid technology and workforce management companies, work with leading utility communications providers and invest in satellite broadband. We believe that by working with quality partners, we can innovate, expand and enhance the products, services and solutions we offer our members. We’re already seeing that pay dividends. Teamwork. Innovation. Results.

Before that first step

Think Safety! Ladders are great for all kinds of home improvement projects, but you want to be careful when working near power lines.
