Brendan Graham brings his You Raise Me Up – The Songs and Stories of Brendan Graham with the National Symphony Orchestra to the NCH stage on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 January. Here are five things to know about one of Ireland’s most beloved songwriters: 1. B rendan is from Nenagh in Co. Tipperary and worked as an
industrial engineer before pursuing songwriting full-time in 1993.
2. H e has written two Eurovision-winning songs Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids by
Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan which secured the top spot in 1994 and The Voice by Eimear Quinn which triumphed in 1996. He also wrote the 1976 entry When which was sung by Red Hurley and the 1985 entry Wait Until the Weekend Comes performed by Maria Christian.
3. Y ou Raise Me Up has been recorded in over 60 languages and was
a global chart hit for Westlife and Josh Groban. Artists that have covered You Raise Me Up include Celtic Woman, Daniel O’Donnell, Aled Jones and Johnny Mathis to name but a few. One of the best-known performances of the song was at the 2004 Superbowl by Josh Groban.
4. H e has penned three acclaimed novels The Whitest Flower (1998),
an Irish No. 2 best seller, The Element of Fire (2001) and The Brightest Day, The Darkest Night (2004).
5. B rendan was invited to write the lyrics for a lullaby for Prince
George, son of William and Catherine, then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. It is entitled Sleep On.

South African cellist Abel Selaocoe joins forces with the trailblazing Britten Sinfonia for a programme of Beethoven, Bartók and Tavener this February as part of the NCH International Concert Series 23/24. Here are five things to know about the rising star: 1. Abel Selaocoe was born in Sebokeng, South Africa in 1992. As a child he attended a music school in the township of Soweto and at 13 he earned a scholarship to Johannesburg’s St. John’s College where he undertook formal cello studies. 2. A t 18 he enrolled at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he completed an International Artist Diploma in 2018. 3. I n 2021 Abel made his BBC Proms debut. Over the course of his career, he has performed at such renowned festivals as the Lucerne Festival and WOMAD and at such prestigious venues as Cadogan Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and Bridgewater Hall to name but a few. 4. Abel was signed to the Warner Classics label and released his debut album, the critically-acclaimed Where Is Home (Hae Ke Kae), in 2022. Selaocoe is currently an artist in residence at the Southbank Centre and an artist in association with both the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC Singers. 5. A bel has a close partnership with Manchester Collective, with whom he devised the hugely successful Sirocco programme which has been enjoyed both live and digitally by audiences since 2019. He is also a member of Chesaba, a trio he formed with Irish bassist Alan Keary and djembe player Sidiki Dembélé from the Ivory Coast, who specialise in music from the African continent.

This concert features music by Czech composers: Vítězslava Kaprálová’s String Quartet No 1, written in 1935 while holidaying in the Czech-Moravian Highlands and Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1, an autobiographical piece reflecting his Austro Hungarian, Czech upbringing.
Ungrievable Lives is Bray’s first work for String Quartet, and is a response to the current migration crisis, inspired by the work of Caroline Burraway, who reflects on the crisis within her work. Having witnessed the situation first-hand at refugee camps in the Mediterranean, Burraway’s installation comprises 13 children’s dresses handmade from discarded refugee lifejackets gathered at the Lifejacket Graveyard in Lesvos, Greece..
