THE DEUTSCHE KAMMERPHILHARMONIE BREMEN The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen perform as part of the International Concert Series on Thursday 7 December with conductor Paavo Järvi and pianist Fabian Müller. Here are five things to know about the esteemed German orchestra: 1. The ‘Chamber Orchestra of the Young German Philharmonic’, as it was originally known, was founded in 1980 in Frankfurt, as an ensemble owned solely by the musicians, without a conductor. 2. Notable early concerts include a 1983 appearance at the United Nations and performances with Gidon Kremer at the Lockenhaus Festival in 1984 and 1985. The orchestra acquired professional status in 1987 and moved to Bremen in 1992. 3. The orchestra has performed at prestigious festivals such as BBC Proms and Aix-en-Provence and toured the world to places such as France, Vienna, Luxembourg, Russia, America, Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. 4. P ast conductors who have served as either principal guest conductors or artistic directors have included Mario Venzago, Heinrich Schiff and Thomas Hengelbrock. Daniel Harding was music director of the orchestra from 1999 to 2003. Paavo Järvi has served as the orchestra’s artistic leader since 2004. 5. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen has recorded a number of albums for such revered labels as Deutsche Grammophon, EMI Classics, BMG, Virgin Classics, Decca and Chandos. Their album Beethoven Made in Bremen won the Echo Klassik Award and received the honorary prize at the German Record Critic’s Award.
