FÁILTE
Welcome to our What’s on Guide for September and October 2023.
This autumn sees the exciting announcement of a new International Concert Series and National Symphony Orchestra Season, the two main strands of the National Concert Hall’s latest programme featuring a multitude of musical offerings to accompany these longer evenings and milder days.
Our International Concert Series
2023/24, inspired by European culture and values, commences with the renowned Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra on 19th of September; later that month on the 28th of September, the exquisite Danish String Quartet bring a programme of works by Schubert and more. October 14th sees the acclaimed Italian period-instrument ensemble Europa Galante with English soprano Nardus Williams taking to the NCH stage and iconic American pianist Richard Goode making his Irish debut on 23rd of October.
We continue to celebrate 50 years of Ireland’s membership of the European Union with two new series: Europe Here and Now, curated by Artistic Director of Crash Ensemble, Kate Ellis who looks to the cutting-edge of contemporary European music-making while Echoes of Europe sees violinist David Tobin bring together some of Europe’s most exciting young chamber musicians.
The National Symphony Orchestra and their Chief Conductor Jaime Martín also announce their exciting season of concerts to start in September, featuring world renowned soloists and guest conductors in a rich and varied programme of classical greats and world and Irish premieres as well as live screenings with music, family concerts including ‘Symphony Shorts’ and so much more.
On September 22nd the NCH together with the National Symphony Orchestra
and Choirs celebrate Culture Night with a variety of free to attend percussion, choral and gamelan workshops; a choral performance by Cór Linn and Cór na nÓg and evening concerts by the National Symphony Orchestra of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 1 Low and Simon Cullen’s MXXM Music for 18 Machines Reimagined , an electronic reimagining of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians
The NCH Chamber Music Series makes a welcome return to the Kevin Barry Recital Room in September with performances by the Carducci and ConTempo Quartets in association with the National String Quartet Foundation.
The Perspectives Series sees the legendary Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve in concert on September 7th, Ivor Novello Award-winning artist Hannah Peel performing her Mercury-nominated album Fir Wave live on October 1st, and we welcome back Brad Mehldau with 14 Reveries as part of the series on September 17th .
In addition, Tradition Now, an initiative of the NCH and the Arts
Council, runs on October 7th and 8th with award-winning act Ye Vagabonds, revered concertina player Cormac Begley, Doireann Ní Ghlacáin, this year’s NCH Liam O’Flynn Award winner Strange Boy and many more.
Elsewhere on the bill Josh Ritter celebrates his legendary album
