Welcome to our Programme for May and June 2023.
Summer has finally arrived, with its promise of sunshine and long evenings. Nature is in full bloom and the world seems just that bit brighter. At the National Concert Hall, our May-June programme provides a virtual smorgasbord of events to add extra sparkle to these summer months.

Acclaimed clarinettist Michael Collins with Michael McHale, piano and The Wigmore Soloists visits on May 21 and on June 20 revered choral group The Sixteen return to the NCH with conductor Harry Christophers for a concert that celebrates the 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd.
The National Symphony Orchestra season continues with guests including rising American star Joshua Wellerstein on May 5. Award-winning conductor
Christian Reif and soprano Julia Bullock visit on May 19 and on May 26 Estonian conductor Mihhail Gerts leads the NSO for an evening of Rachmaninov and Tubin with soprano Mirjam Mesak.
The RTÉ Concert Orchestra brings the ever-popular May the Fourth Be With You back to the NCH on May 4 and their activity during this time also includes The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber on May 11 and Queen: A Symphonic Rock Spectacular on June 2 and 3.
Elsewhere in the calendar, as part of our Perspectives series, seminal label Erased Tapes take over the NCH on May 20 for a multi-artist celebration which includes electronic producer Rival Consoles and the esteemed Penguin Cafe (which features Neil Codling (Suede), and Cass Browne (Gorillaz)).
We also welcome international guitar legend Robert Cray on June 14, host Camerata Ireland and Barry Douglas on June 1 and remember one of our

On May 13 at 7.30pm the Irish Baroque Orchestra take to the main stage of the NCH with Emotional Motivations - from Bach to Buxtehude featuring an exciting programme of works by Bach, Buxtehude, Muffat and Hoffman. Ten Things to Know About the Irish Baroque Orchestra (IBO):
1. T he Irish Baroque Orchestra is Ireland’s only professional period instrument orchestra. It was established in 1996 by Mark Duley and Thérèse Timoney as Christ Church Baroque.
2. I n 2013 the Irish Baroque Orchestra became a resident organisation of the National Concert Hall and moved into the Earlsfort Terrace complex.
3. T he IBO’s Irish heritage recording cycle began in 2019 with Welcome Home Mr Dubourg. The collection explores music in Ireland under Matthew Dubourg who served as concert master in Dublin from 1728 to 1764. Dubourg led the orchestra for the first performance of Handel’s Messiah in 1742.
4. IBO Artistic Director Peter Whelan studied music at Trinity College before going to Basel to study bassoon and harpsichord. Acclaimed for his exhilarating approach to historical performance, he also boasts a remarkable career as a conductor, keyboardist and solo bassoonist.
5. The IBO’s second album, The Trials of Tenducci , with Tara Erraught, is based on the music the titular soprano castrato from Sienna would have heard and performed during his visit to Ireland in 1765. Whilst here he caused a national scandal by eloping to Cork to marry a teenage singing student and spent time in Cork Gaol before the couple eloped to Britain.
6. I BO Associate Director Claire Duff is an internationally acclaimed baroque violinist much in demand
as soloist, chamber musician, leader and director. Claire has an extensive discography, including a highly acclaimed CD of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto with Monica Huggett and IBO.
7. The Orchestra’s third release - The Hibernian Muse with Sestina (2022)examines music by Johann Sigismund Cousser and Henry Purcell. Cousser was a Hungarian composer who spent the last twenty years of his life in Dublin. He was one of the most knowledgeable and respected operatic directors in Europe. His Serenata ‘The Universal Applause of Mount Parnassus’ was composed for the birthday celebrations of Queen Anne in 1711.
8. T he IBO is committed to developing historically informed performance and works with a number of partner organisations across the country to ensure its continued growth for future generations. The award-winning Irish Youth Baroque Orchestra (delivered in partnership with the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras) gives students the opportunity to work intensively on elements of period style
9. I n February 2022 the IBO made its debut to critical acclaim at the Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House, London with Vivaldi’s Bajazet, a co-production from Irish National Opera and the Royal Opera House. In April 2022 they were awarded an Olivier Award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Opera’ for their work on this project.
10. This year the IBO’s relationship with the NCH was further enhanced when it became an Associate Ensemble of the National Concert Hall.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER
On Thursday 11 May the RTÉ Concert Orchestra presents The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber with soloists Killian Donnelly and Louise Dearman under conductor Stephen Bell. Lloyd Webber is one of the most talented and well-known composers of musicals in history, several of which have run for over a decade both in London and on Broadway.
Ten things to know about the seminal composer:
1. A ndrew Lloyd Webber was born into a musical household on 22 March 1948. His late father William was a composer and director fo the London College of Music and his mother Jean played violin and piano. He started writing music at a young age and when he was 15 he began studies at the Eric Gilder School of Music.
2. At the age of 17 he was introduced to his best-known creative partner, lyricist Tim Rice. Their first collaboration was The Likes of Us , a musical based on the true story of Thomas John Barnardo, the Irish-born philanthropist who founded the children’s charity.
3. I n 1967, a family friend of Lloyd-Webber’s, music teacher Alan Dogget, commissioned him and Tim Rice to write a piece for the Colet Court school choir. He requested a ‘pop cantata’ and the result became Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat
4. I n 1970, Lloyd-Webber and Rice collaborated on the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar based on the Gospels’ accounts of the Passion. Initially unable to get funding, it was released as a concept album. The success of which led to its Broadway debut in 1971.
5. I n a similar manner, Lloyd-Webber and Rice’s following project, Evita (based on the life of Eva Peron), also began as a concept album
before debuting in the West End’s Price Edward theatre in 1978. It then transferred to Broadway.
6. L loyd-Webber’s next global success –Cats (1981) - was based on T.S. Eliot’s 1939 poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats . The show is credited with starting the ‘mega musical’ (large-scale, long running and hugely successful) phenomenon and ran for 21 years in London and 18 in New York.
7. The Phantom of the Opera , which opened in London’s West End in 1986 and on Broadway in 1988, is the longest-running show in Broadway history. The celebrated 80s production featured Sarah Brightman (who was married to Lloyd Webber at the time) and Michael Crawford. Ireland’s very own Colm Wilkinson played the role of Phantom in the original Canadian production of the musical.
8. H is later successes include The Beautiful Game (2000), about a group of teenagers growing up in Belfast, The Woman in White (2004), an adaptation of the Wilkie Collins’ novel, The Wizard of Oz (2011), School of Rock (2015), inspired by the 2003 Jack Black film about an out-of-work musician who becomes a teacher and Cinderella (2021).
9. A ndrew Lloyd Webber composed the theme music to the long-running programme The South Bank Show. The piece was written in 1977 for his cellist brother Julian and is based on the theme from Paganini’s 24th Caprice.

10. L loyd Webber and his wife
Madeleine Gurdon (former equestrian sportswoman) whom he married in 1991 are the current owners of Kiltinan Castle near Fethard in Tipperary. They also own and run Kiltinan Castle Stud.

Setting the gold standard for over 40 years, The Sixteen are one of the world’s finest and most renowned early music choral ensembles. As part of the NCH International Concert Series 2023, they make a much-anticipated return to the NCH on Tuesday 20 June at 8pm with its pioneering founder/conductor, Harry Christophers. Their chosen programme, entitled - Song In The Wilderness - marks the 400th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, William Byrd.
1. T he Sixteen was founded by Harry Christophers in 1979 to perform the music of the English polyphony through contemporary choral music. The Sixteen are regarded as peerless interpreters of Renaissance, Baroque and modern choral music.
2. Christophers also founded a period-instrument ensemble to accompany The Sixteen, referred to as The Orchestra of the Sixteen.
3. T he Sixteen are the official ‘Voices of Classic FM’. They are also Artistic Associates of King’s Place, London and from 2016-2017 were Artists in Residence at Wigmore Hall.
4. S ince 2000 The Sixteen have undertaken an annual Choral Pilgrimage, which sees them performing sacred music in Britain’s great cathedrals and abbeys, the settings for which it was created.
5. T he Sixteen’s touring credits include performances at the BBC Proms, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Vienna’s Musikverein and Cité de la musique in Paris. Noteworthy festival appearances include Hong Kong, Wellington, Granada, Lucerne, Edinburgh, Istanbul, Prague, Bremen, La Chaise-Dieu and Salzburg.
6. I n 2001 The Sixteen launched its own record label, CORO. Since then, they have released over 90 titles including albums of choral works by Francis Poulenc, Purcell’s Royal Welcome Songs for King James II and the world premiere recording of MacMillan’s Stabat mater.
7. T he ensemble’s many awards include a Classical Brit Award for Renaissance (2005), The Classic FM Gramophone Artist of the Year 2009, The Gramophone Best Baroque Vocal Award for its recording of Handel’s Coronation Anthems and The Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Ensemble (2018).
8. T he Sixteen featured in the BBC-produced series Sacred Music which aired between 2008 and 2015. In addition, they were the subject of A Choral Odyssey, a specially curated series of online films presented by Simon Russell Beale.
9. H arry Christophers was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s 2012 Birthday Honours for his services to music. He is an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, as well as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
10. T he Sixteen’s period-instrument orchestra has drawn critical acclaim for its work in semi-staged performances of Purcell’s Royal Welcome Songs in London, a production of Purcell’s King Arthur in Lisbon and new productions of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse at Lisbon Opera House.
