The National Ballet of Canada’s creative home is on the sacred and traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa peoples. We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The National Ballet of Canada is grateful to have the opportunity to work, dance and create on these lands and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land for their stewardship. The land we are performing on today has been home to dance and storytelling traditions of Indigenous people since time immemorial. We recognize that colonialism and intergenerational trauma has silenced Indigenous artists for far too long. With this in mind, we encourage you to experience and support the work of the many extraordinary Indigenous dance artists working in Canada today.

            WELCOME TO FRAME BY FRAME
Frame by Frame immerses us in the life and art of Canadian animator Norman McLaren, whose influential hand-drawn techniques helped to establish the field of animation in Canada. The production is a tribute to McLaren and an expression of artistic curiosity in its own right, the result of a unique partnership between two respected Canadian artists – director Robert Lepage and Principal Dancer and Choreographic Associate Guillaume Côté.
Frame by Frame embodies many of the National Ballet’s greatest strengths as a site of creative collaboration and Canadian talent. The production marked a ground-breaking first partnership between The National Ballet of Canada, Ex Machina (Robert Lepage’s multimedia production company in Québec City) and the National Film Board of Canada. This is our first restaging of Frame by Frame since its premiere in 2018 and I have so enjoyed the process of introducing new dancers to the imaginative world that Robert and Guillaume have created.
Whether you are revisiting Frame by Frame or experiencing it for the first time, I hope you are similarly inspired by McLaren’s legacy and the vision of the creative team.

Thank you so much for joining us,
          Hope Muir

            WHO WAS NORMAN MCLAREN?
Born in Stirling, Scotland, in 1914, Norman McLaren, the founder of the National Film Board's (NFB) animation studio, succeeded in giving Canadian animation a vision and direction that still endures today, long after he was hired by John Grierson in 1941. McLaren refused to accept the simple narrative that claimed cinema had been invented by the Lumière brothers in 1895; he was of the opinion that the art form had yet to fully come into its own and that research and experimentation were the natural ingredients of artistic creation. He thus emerged as a pioneer of countless techniques that have become hallmarks of animation: drawing and engraving on film, cross-dissolves, pixillation, synthesized sound and many others. Pre-existing methods and formulas had no place in his approach. Uncommon boldness and originality were the creative sources for all his work.

The path McLaren forged in the history of cinema has been illuminated by the many international awards he received throughout his career: a Palme d’Or in the short film category at
Cannes for Blinkity Blank, an Academy Award for Neighbours, a Berlin Silver Bear for Rythmetic, a Berlin Silver Plaque for Begone Dull Care, BAFTAs for Blinkity Blank, A Chairy Tale and Pas de Deux, not to mention numerous Canadian awards, as well as the honours bestowed in recognition of his overall achievements.
McLaren’s personality and philosophy were inseparable from the direction animation took at the NFB. A tireless innovator, he championed a creative concept of animation that views filmmakers as artisans who take charge of every step of the production of their films, much like artists in their studios. Consequently, McLaren set an example for his colleagues, motivating them to develop their own tools and experiment with new techniques.
McLaren died in Montréal in 1987. His importance in the history of film animation is also evident in the influence he continues to have on hundreds of filmmakers and artists who consciously follow in his footsteps.

FRAME BY FRAME: CREATIVITY AND COLLABORATION
          by John Hart

In Frame by Frame, their homage to Norman McLaren, Robert Lepage and Guillaume Côté honour the technique, care, passion and patience that the pioneering animator invested in every frame of his films. The 2018 ballet enters McLaren’s imaginative landscape and becomes a mediation on how film, movement, music and dance produce an effect greater than the sum of its parts.

A ballet lover, McLaren had a deep interest in movement and music which he brought to his work, along with an exuberant sense of joy. Lepage and Côté took their inspiration from these qualities to explore McLaren’s creative processes and collaborative circle. Frame by Frame also examines and extends McLaren’s fascination with the ways technology can be employed to produce and become a moving piece of art.
“A cinematic genius who made films without cameras and music without instruments.”
          – National Film Board

McLaren’s experiments in filmmaking were idiosyncratic and accessible, whimsical and aesthetically brilliant. Each project was infused with McLaren’s personal sense of curiosity, discovery and playfulness. It took many months, sometimes over a year, to create a film, especially if McLaren was painting directly on film strip. Just think: a five minute film was made up of 7,200 individual frames that McLaren animated one at a time: frame by frame. Is the animation perfect? No, but each film has its own sense of character and energy. The imperfections themselves give the films life and reveal the hand and creativity of the artist.
“I want the show to be an homage from the digital age to Norman McLaren, to the analog world.”
          – Robert Lepage

Lepage was long intrigued by Norman McLaren and his ability to create ground-breaking films prior to computer animation. There are direct parallels in the hallmarks of McLaren’s and Lepage’s artistic styles: the use of technology to tell stories, a fusion of art forms, a collaborative process and a personal dedication to creativity and innovation. Like many of McLaren’s projects, the creation of Frame by Frame was itself a collaboration, with Lepage’s Ex Machina studio, the National Film Board and The National Ballet of Canada.
As choreographer, Côté’s task was to create movement in tandem with McLaren’s films screened onstage, to extrapolate from the films or to replicate them in real time. Undoubtedly the climax of the ballet is the stunning Pas de deux (1968), one of McLaren’s three dance films. Côté reproduces the film in its entirety and the ballet uses today’s technology to re-create McLaren’s filmic effects. The scene is breathtaking, especially how it wonderfully and emotionally captures McLaren’s celebration of the art of dance.
“Frame by Frame is a portrait of Norman McLaren – his life, his work, his relationship to dance and how he revolutionized the discipline of animation by being true to himself.”
          – Guillaume Côté

            NORMAN MCLAREN'S COLLABORATORS

    GUY GLOVER (1910 – 1988)
Guy Glover was Norman McLaren’s life partner from 1937 until McLaren’s death. Glover was an actor and director in theatre and television in London in the 1930s and would be a significant influence on McLaren’s knowledge of and feelings about dance. Often a judge at ballet festivals, he played an important role in the establishment of Canada Council funding for professional dance in Canada. Glover became a senior producer at the National Film Board of Canada and would be the key sounding board for McLaren in the making of his three dance films: Pas de deux, Ballet Adagio and Narcissus

    JEAN-PAUL LADOUCEUR (1921 – 1992)
Jean-Paul Ladouceur, a graduate of l'École des beaux-arts de Montréal, was one of the first young artists hired by Norman when he founded the NFB Animation Studio in January 1943. He would become famous as one of the two protagonists, along with Grant Munro, in McLaren's celebrated Neighbours. He held many positions at the National Film Board of Canada and CBC Radio-Canada, including animator, designer, presenter and screenwriter and was also a celebrated visual artist.
          GRANT MUNRO (1923 – 2017)
Grant Munro was a Canadian filmmaker and animator. He was a protégé of Norman McLaren and collaborated closely with him on several of his films, most famously in Neighbours where he played one of the two protagonists. He was one of the earliest and longest-serving members of the National Film Board of Canada, making films full of innovation and wit, which have influenced other filmmakers.

          JOHN GRIERSON (1898 – 1972)
Scotsman John Grierson is known as the father of the social documentary and he also coined the term “documentary”. In 1938, Grierson came to Canada to advise the Canadian government on film policy. One consequence was the National Film Board of Canada and Grierson would be the first commissioner. In the war years, Grierson created the ethos that still drives the National Film Board of Canada and has made it a major world force in documentary and animation film. Grierson believed that one could be both “a public servant and an artist.” He discovered McLaren as a student in Glasgow and brought him to Canada in 1941.
          EVELYN LAMBART (1914 – 1999)

Evelyn Lambart was a Canadian animator and director with the National Film Board of Canada. She was Norman McLaren’s filmmaking partner for 21 years, collaborating on films such as Begone Dull Care, A Chairy Tale, Rythmetic and Mosaic. She also made several of her own films and perfected the animation technique of hinged metal cut-outs made from lithograph plate which she would then paint and animate. Lambart used this technique in seven award-winning films.
          MAURICE BLACKBURN
          (1914 – 1988)
Maurice Blackburn was a Canadian composer, who composed a multitude of scores for the National Film Board of Canada films, some for Norman McLaren. Experimental by nature, his soundtracks took many forms including musique concrete. Blackburn composed the music for McLaren’s animation film Blinkity Blank in 1954 which won the Short Film Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In this, the score was built around the element of chance in the performance.

          LUDMILLA CHIRIAEFF (1924 –1996)
Ludmilla Chiriaeff is popularly considered the godmother of ballet in Québec. A dancer, choreographer and teacher, she founded Montréal’s Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and Académie des Grands Ballets Canadiens in 1958, followed by l'École supérieure de danse du Québec in 1966. She choreographed for several shows on CBC Television in the 1950s and was the choreographer of Norman McLaren’s ground-breaking film Pas de deux in 1966. Of collaborating with McLaren, Chiriaeff memorably said, “When you work with McLaren, you enter Norman’s Land.”

    OSCAR PETERSON (1925 – 2007)

Oscar Peterson was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of the world’s greatest jazz pianists and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career spanning more than 60 years. Norman McLaren’s 1948 film Begone Dull Care was created, to quote McLaren as “a visual expression of the spirit of Peterson’s music.”
          RENÉ JODOIN (1920 – 2015)
René Jodoin, whom Norman McLaren labelled “the National Film Board of Canada philosopher” joined the Board in 1943. Another protégé of McLaren, he was an animation director who worked in the Board’s original animation unit and Science Unit, until he founded the Frenchlanguage animation studio of the National Film Board of Canada in 1966. A teacher by temperament, he made vibrant films on geometry and the jet engine that fulfilled John Grierson's dictum of being both public service and art. Jodoin also produced the first computer-made films at the Board.

        MARGARET MERCIER (1937 – )
Margaret Mercier is a celebrated Canadian actress and ballet dancer and was featured in Norman McLaren’s film Pas de deux. She danced with London’s Sadler’s Wells (later The Royal Ballet), Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and The Joffrey Ballet among others. She is also a renowned teacher and has taught at the Royal Ballet School, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and The Royal Danish Ballet.

          WARREN (1938 – 2017)
Vincent Warren was an acclaimed Canadian ballet dancer and teacher. He was featured in Norman McLaren’s film Pas de deux and worked with McLaren on all the tests for his film Narcissus.
