RAMPANT SHOOTINGS INJURES FIVE PEOPLE POLICE SAY JERVIS VALENCIA RESPONSIBLE
ANNOUNCEMENTS
By Rhenae Nunez Belize City; Sun. July 4, 2010 There are contradicting reports about a series of shootings that sent five people to the Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital with none-lifethreatening injuries over the weekend. Belize City police have detained Jervis Valencia, 28, of a Mayflower Street address in relation to the shootings. Valencia has a long rap sheet dating almost ten years back and this weekend Belize City Police are claiming that he went wild in the streets and shot five people including a minor on Saturday night. Two of the victims have told the media that Valencia was not the shooter rather he was their life saver who came to their rescue soon after the shots rang out. The first round of shooting occurred around 9:46 pm at # 4 Banak Street. Police say that two male persons dressed in black t-shirts and three-quarter jeans and dark color warm caps rode up on separate bicycles to the address where Dennis Smith was seated on a verandah with Dorris Moreira and Adelina Alvarez. One of the men pulled out a handgun and begun shooting at them. Dorris Moreira was shot three times in the right leg. Adelina Alvarez was shot once in the right knee. Dennis Smith who it is believed was the target of the shooting escaped unhurt. When police visited the two women at the KHMH, they also saw Michael Young Jr. a mechanic of Belize City along with Earl Pitts and a seventeen year old minor who each had gunshot wounds. Michael Young Jr. had been shot in his left knee and Earl Pitts was shot in the left leg. The seventeen year old minor was shot once in the lower back. Police report that Young, Pitts and the minor were standing in a yard at #16 Zericote Street when two male persons fitting the same description as in the prior shooting at Banak Street approached from the direction

of Banak Street and one of them opened fire. The shooters then rode toward Vernon Street. Although witnesses said that they saw two male persons in both incidents, police have detained Jervis Valencia and two minors for questioning in connection with both shooting incidents on Saturday night. Valencia was recently detained in connection with the June 18th fatal shooting of nineteen year old Joycelyn Mitchell in front of her address on Sibun Street. He was not charged and was later released. In April, he escaped jail time for the attempt on the life of Frederick “Diggy Dap” Lynch. Lynch could not be found to testify. Therefore, the charges were withdrawn and a nolle prosequi was entered thereby setting Valencia free. In 2004 Valencia pled guilty to a lesser charge of grievous harm and was sentenced to serve three years in jail after he doused his girlfriend with alcohol and set her on fire in February of 2003. Valencia was initially charged for attempted murder and deadly means of harm. In October 2008 Valencia was back in the news – charged in connection with a blade that was found in a holding cell at the police station. That resulted only in a fine. In March of this year, Valencia was on the side of the authorities when appeared as witness for the prosecution in the murder trial of Trenton Smith, who was accused of the killing of Tyrone Castillo, which occurred at a wake for George “Junie Balls” McKenzie in August of 2007 on Mayflower Street. Up to Tuesday Valencia was not taken to court neither could it be confirmed whether he was still in police custody.
