Family Medicine Resident Orientation Day

UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION ORIENTATION & ONBOARDING

The department worked to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly orientation and onboarding process for the 2013-2014 academic year. Each departments’ orientation package was reviewed to ensure trainees were receiving the most up-to-date information for their rotations. Orientation emails were updated and sent one to two months before a trainee’s rotation as opposed to three or more months in advance. Sending the information closer to the trainee’s start date avoided confusion about upcoming rotations and elicited a greater response for necessary information for the rotation. Onboarding was abbreviated to include the most necessary information. Furthermore, a shortened package was developed for the trainees that had previously registered with the DMES team during the academic year to maximize their time spent on clinical duties.

ASCM I SJHC has hosted one student group of the Art and Science of Clinical Medicine I course, which runs weekly on Friday mornings from September to June and is tutored by our physicians. The course focuses on having students learn in the hospital environment. They have the opportunity to practice a variety of skills for the first time outside the classroom. We look forward to continuing to build and offer this course at the Health Centre for the 2014-2015 academic year.

ASCM II

In addition to ASCM I, we also facilitated select classes for the Art and Science of Clinical Medicine II course for the 2013-2014 year. The DMES team is happy to announce that the Health Centre will increase their contributions to ASCM II by hosting one student group of the course for the full 2014-2015 academic year, which will run weekly on Thursday mornings from September to June.

EXPANDED ROTATIONS The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology continued their support for the Obstetrics undergraduate rotation for the 2013-2014 academic year by hosting clerkship students every two weeks for the FitzGerald and Wightman-Berris Academies. The Health Centre will be taking on a full complement of students for the 2014-2015 academic year by hosting clerkship students for their full six week Obstetrics rotation.

TRANSITION TO RESIDENCY (TTR) The Transition to Residency program was offered again this year in the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Medicine and Surgery. The DMES team worked alongside these departments to accommodate as many fourth year undergraduate students interested in the TTR program as possible.

ORIENTATION DAY The DMES team revamped orientation day for the beginning of the 2014-2015 academic year. On July 2nd, 2014, the team hosted a morning orientation session which included eCare training, breakfast, registration and guided tours to receive ID badges, parking passes and dictation numbers. The orientation wrapped up with a trainee and physician welcome BBQ hosted by the DMES team.

eCARE TRAINING With the roll out of electronic patient records, residents carrying out their rotations at SJHC require training on the eCare system when they arrive at the Health Centre. The DMES team integrated the eLearning requirements into the residents’ orientation information, and ensured all residents were scheduled for the training session in order to be fully prepared for their time at SJHC. Social at the Westerly during RAW

RESIDENT EDUCATION RESIDENT AWARENESS WEEK (RAW) February 24th to 28th marked the first ever Resident Awareness Week at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. The DMES hosted events throughout the week to celebrate the important role residents’ play in the care of our patients. Events included a Breakfast Forum with residents and staff physicians to discuss the transition from residency to practice; Followed by a keynote address by Master Corporal Jody Mitic, highlighting his Never Quit mentality; Lunch with Chief of Staff, Dr. Ted Rogovein; and a social at The Westerly for staff physicians and residents to encourage networking. For more information view the following link: http://www.stjoe.on.ca/about/publications/features_detail.php?id=5720

LUNCH WITH THE CHIEF February 2014 marked the first of the quarterly Lunch with the Chief Series. Dr. Ted Rogovein, Chief of Staff at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, presented and discussed topics with residents at the Health Centre that are important to being an effective manager in healthcare. These sessions are based on the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework to enable residents to understand and improve their managerial skills as they prepare for their futures as key providers of healthcare to Canadians.

RESIDENT EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT (RED) The DMES is in the initial stage of developing a unique Resident Education Development (RED) program that will address the learning needs of residents in distinct CanMEDS roles that are not usually part of a clinical rotation. This program would be the first of its kind in a community-teaching hospital.

Resident for a Day Press Conference

RESIDENT FOR A DAY: SURGICAL EDUCATION The Department of Medical Education (DMES) organized a “Resident for a Day event on April 10th. The Federal Minister of Health, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, came to SJHC and became a surgical resident. Minister Ambrose rounded on various surgical patients, observed various surgeries and was paged along with the residents to different consults. For more information view the video online. http://www.stjoe.on.ca/about/publications/features_detail.php?id=5730

CTU PROJECT The Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU) is a phenomenon of Academic Health Sciences Centres (AHSCs). Teams of medical trainees at multiple levels of training cover a subset of patients, work with interprofessional staff, and are taught by a faculty appointed physician. July 2014 marked the first time this style of rotation was offered at SJHC. The CTU was developed to provide Family Medicine Residents with their Internal Medicine educational requirements while enhancing the rotation for Internal Medicine Trainees. This also brings to light the size of the medicine program both in terms of the number of beds and faculty members.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO IMPACT FACULTY APPOINTMENTS Over the past year, there has been a steady increase in University of Toronto (UofT) faculty appointments in our clinical departments. Currently there are 190 UofT Faculty of Medicine members at SJHC. Since August 2013, 16 new members have received their faculty appointments.

TAHSNe The Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network Education Committee has representation from the fully affiliated hospitals of the University of Toronto and the four large community-teaching in Toronto, including St. Joseph’s Health Centre. As part of our commitment to this committee, DMES has engaged SJHC’s learners in the Learner Engagement Survey. We had the greatest response rate amongst the sites in 2013 (80%) and are working diligently to continue this high level of engagement from our learners.

TAHSNe LIBRARY WORKING GROUP The TAHSNe Library Working Group was co-chaired by Drs. Ivan Silver (VP Education, CAMH) and Jerry Maniate (Chief DMES, SJHC). Its purpose was to explore: ‣ What should the health sciences library look like in five to ten years, with regards to resources, services and physical space. ‣ Identify challenges /opportunities in the planning and operation of TAHSN hospital libraries. ‣ Identify the formal / informal relationships, and governance structure between the libraries in TAHSN hospitals, the Health Sciences Information Consortium of Toronto (HSICT, also known as “the Consortium”), and University of Toronto Libraries (UTL). The LWG has finalized their recommendations that willl be circulated to the TAHSN CEOs and other stakeholders for further discussion.

TAHSNe PATIENT FAMILY & EDUCATION WG The TAHSNe Working Group on Patient and Family Education will serve to enhance the delivery of Patient and Family Education across all TAHSN sites through sharing expertise, resources (including educational products) and best practices, developing staff skills / competencies and developing a TAHSN-wide strategy to promote excellence in patient and family education.

eLEARNING TASK FORCE Nathan Bugden has represented SJHC as part of the University’s eLearning Task Force. This task force has been designed to help inform the strategic direction for implementing eLearning solutions across the Faculty of Medicine at U of T. His contributions have included helping define the current state of eLearning by enhancing the assessments sent to both Faculty and Trainees as well as participating in a literature review that will shape the definition of eLearning used at U of T.
