Roofing & repairs

Flat roofing Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Walk: The Southern Slopes and the Airman’s Grave Length: 2.0 miles / 3.25km

With Thanks to the Ashdown Forest Centre and Conservators for allowing us to reproduce their walk leaflet (edited version below). There are other walk leaflets available at the Forest Centre. Have you or the kids got cabin-fever? Why not get out and about with family, friends (or by yourself even) and take advantage of the wonderful Ashdown Forest views with this walk. 1. From Hollies walk past the information board

and head downhill and due south (away from the road) on a clear wide grassy track. Head to the left side of the patch of woodland (mainly oak and birch). Passing the woodland, the track continues to descend gently and views south open up ahead. The views stretch over the Low Weald to, on a fine day, the panorama of the South Downs around Firle Beacon some 25km (16 miles) away. Heath spotted orchids

The Airman’s Grave

The stream sometimes runs a dark rusty colour. This denotes the presence of the iron that was the basis of a major Forest – and High Weald - industry for nearly 2000 years. Woodland on this part of the Forest was heavily exploited to fuel the furnaces at nearby Buxted that, in 1543, produced Britain’s first cast iron cannon. The industry survived in the Weald until 1824 when the last furnace closed. The name of Boringwheel Mill Farm on private land about 1km to the southwest describes the boring wheel that was used to drill out the solid cast cannon barrel to the right calibre or bore. 4. Turn right and cross the bridge over the

From spring to autumn, sheep and cattle graze the area around you. You are walking through heathland, the most characteristic habitat of the Forest. The 1500 hectares of it here are the largest extent in South East England. Careful searches will find the round-leaved sundew. It obtains nutrients from insects caught by long sticky glands on the leaves. In folklore, the sundew had a reputation for preserving long life and acting as an aphrodisiac! 2. park, parallel with the roadway and with Camp Hill Clump in front of you on the horizon. Camp Hill Clump was first planted in 1825. It’s name probably derives from a military camp nearby in July 1793. More Forest clumps can be encountered on other walks in the series.

Despite it’s name, no one is buried here. It is a memorial to six young men, the crew of a Wellington bomber who were all killed when it crashed here on 31 July 1941. Annual remembrance services are still held here. 3. From the Airman’s Grave continue in the

The Come Back Kid Mark Pearn staged one of the best come-backs in GB Hockey history when, after a 6 year absence, he was re-selected for the British Team. Here we interview him, as part of our series of EG Hockey Club Player profiles, in the run up to 2012. a respected club and try to take them In 2011 you made your England comeback after 6 years. How did from a newly promoted side to title contenders both domestically and in you achieve this? I finished playing for England/GB in 2005, so after a 6-year break I was able to make this comeback as I was playing at a high level with EG. I’d been working hard on my physical conditioning since the summer of 2010.

In 2011 you won, ‘Hockey Player of the year’ for the second time. How did it feel getting this accolade at 34?

A bit of a shock really as I didn’t think I would have an opportunity to win these type of awards again after retiring the first time and especially as there are some quality players around. I certainly appreciated it more this time than when I was 23 (in 2000) as I now know it doesn’t happen every year.

Why did you choose East Grinstead Hockey Club, what makes it special?

I chose EG as I had just returned from playing in Barcelona and I wanted another challenge rather than just rejoining Reading where I had been fortunate enough to win league titles and the European Cup. Also it was the opportunity to player/coach at such

Europe. The club is special because it has a great mix of people who all want the team to be successful and are prepared to give up their own free time to support us.

What is your most memorable experience with the club?

Easy: winning the league title for the first time in 2009! We had to go to Surbiton on the last day of the season and win our 8th game in a row to secure the title and we came back from 2-3 down to win 5-3.

What is your greatest challenge in preparation for Summer 2012?

Staying fit and healthy! We are training so hard at the moment, both with our hockey and our conditioning, that it is vital to do everything possible to look after your body.

Who or where do you draw inspiration from?

From my family and especially from my two daughters Isabella and Ruby. If they are proud of what I have done in the future then there is not much else I can ask for.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Petits Pots de crème Vanilla beans have called ‘the pastry cook’s truffles’. Their haunting, exotic flavour is quite without equal. Don’t use essence or extract in their place. To make a chocolate version of the pots de crème, add 1 tsp of cocoa powder and 4 tbl spoons of melted dark chocolate.

This is a very simple, tasty recipe.

Method Recipe by Chef

Dean Samsudin

1. Pre-heat oven to 140C (275F/Gas Mark 1)

at the Brambletye Hotel

2. Put milk in a saucepan. Split the vanilla pod in two, scrape out seeds and add seeds and scraped pod to milk.

Ingredients

3. Bring the milk just to the boil, remove and allow to stand for 20 minutes to infuse.

400ml (14 floz) Milk 2 Vanilla Pods

4. Mix together the egg yolks, egg and sugar. Strain milk over the egg mixture and discard vanilla pod. Stir well, skim off any foam. 5. Ladle mixture into 4 125ml ramekins and place in a roasting tin. Pour enough hot water into tin to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

3 Egg Yolks 1 Egg 80g (2 ¾ oz) Caster Sugar

6. Bake for 30 minutes or until custards are firm to touch. Cool, then refrigerate.

Local sports coach Alex Over takes on

London to Brighton

Why the London to Brighton? Despite always being fit I embarked on a more intensive training regime about 8 months ago and was keen to find a challenge which would ensure I sustained that. I had toyed with the idea of running the marathon but I suffer with a back problem which means road running is very difficult. Therefore the London to Brighton seemed a perfect solution as it is intensive enough to require training whilst being a bit kinder to my back! Tell us about your training for the occasion? I am a tennis & squash coach which demands I maintain a certain level of fitness. I also run a men’s football team (Ashurst Wood FC Men’s First Team) and a dip in my fitness would provide too big a ribbing opportunity so I do work hard to stay fit! As the weather improves and the nights get light getter cycling has actually been really

enjoyable. I’m not sure I’ll still be of that opinion half way up Ditchling but it’ll be worth it as I cycle into Brighton. What do your friends and family think of your decision to undertake this challenge? They are all very proud, despite the jokes about silicone shorts and saddle sores! My father-in-law has MS and attends the Centre in Coulsdon so I’m cycling in support. They provide a vital service which is not easy to access elsewhere, I am keen to do what I can to ensure it continues. What results are you hoping to achieve? I am a very competitive person (having been a keen sportsman for most of my life!) so I am hoping to enjoy the experience. Most of all I am just looking forward to the challenge and enjoying the achievement of having completed the cycle.

THAT CLANKING NOISE YOUR HEATING MAKES? WE CAN MAKE IT STOP.

A Home from Home

Sue Dorman,Home Manager

Entering Littlefair Care Home, an unassuming building of simple geometry, I was surprised to be met with an elegant, spacious and most importantly welcoming interior. As I entered the lounge there was also an atmosphere of contentment with a good spattering of ‘hustle and bustle’ - though not overdone. We often have preconceived ideas about Care Homes for the Elderly and I admit I was no exception. Yet I was enjoying the first-impressions of the tour of the house led by Amanda Travers (the Home Administrator). The adjectives ‘cosy’ and ‘homely’ soon came to mind & it became clear why this was: The home was started over twenty years ago by Amanda’s parents, Robin and Lilliane Kennedy and whilst they are no longer involved in the business (having retired themselves) the family “ethos” continues. With many long-serving staff this helps in providing continuity of care. Naturally late in one’s life no one likes ‘chop and change’ and the consistency is appreciated. This all makes for the coveted ‘family feel’ people yearn for. There is further illustration of this with, for instance, the fact carers eat with those they are caring for – not separately. Such little touches

add towards the bigger picture. I could see that Littlefair are experts at striking the balance between rest needed in old age and the need to keep the mind occupied. In the lounge some residents were simply relaxing whilst others were chatting and carrying out hobbies. Some light garden work was being done and there had been a visit that day by students from nearby Sackville school. There is an enthusiastic young woman in charge of co-ordinating activities. Every day there is something they can do from chair Zumba to crafts and musical therapy. A Diamond Jubilee Street party is planned for the summer, along with a number of other outings. All the rooms and communal spaces are immaculately clean and well looked after and I’m glad to say that I could not detect that ‘clinical’ smell which regrettably often lingers in care homes. The building has undergone a total refurbishment over the last year and is modern with traditional touches, being appropriate in taste to the age of the residents. Amanda brought me to meet & chat to Sue Dorman the Home Manager. It was clear this is not just another ‘job’ for Sue but a trust and responsibility to do right by the residents as well as the employees.

That she continuously undertakes courses in all areas of the care profession (I could tell by the array of certificates on the wall…) confirms her professed belief that no matter how much you’ve learnt, there’s more knowledge to be gained – this attitude bodes well and shows someone who is not complacent. Knowing every resident and even many of their family by name and making sure they are aware that there is always an ‘open door’ to Sue is another key principal she uses. Littlefair also offers temporary respite care for those who need it. The home is at near capacity most of the time and the majority of residents come through wordof-mouth. This is testament to all the actions taken to make the place homely and relaxing with just the right amount of mental stimulation. Perfectly suitable, I should say, for one’s twilight years.

Local History Notes Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Smith by Dorothy Hatswell

Oswald Augustus Smith was born on October 12th 1826. His family owned Smith’s Bank. It dated back to the time of Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth. It was the first bank to have branches outside London and was later to be subsumed into the National Westminster Bank. Oswald studied classics at Cambridge. The Smiths were a very wealthy and well-connected family. One of Oswald’s sisters married into the Bowes-Lyon family and was thus later related, by marriage, to the Royal family. The second son of George V, “Bertie”, the future George VI, married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, better known as the late Queen Mother. Oswald, himself, married Rose Sophia Vansittart and they had three sons and one daughter. Their London address was 73, Eaton Place but in 1864 he purchased Hammerwood Lodge from Dorien Magens, as a country retreat. His decision to move into the East Grinstead area was to prove a beneficial one for both Hammerwood and the town. Oswald Smith and his wife were very public-spirited and soon became immersed in all aspects of life in this area. They provided the money to build a school at Hammerwood for the local children in 1873. They went on to establish a Church, St. Stephen’s, in the hamlet seven years later, again entirely at their expense. It was built in the English Gothic style by the architect E.P.Loftus Brock. The spire is one hundred feet high. Oswald Smith kept a diary most of his life. An extract from the entry for March 22nd 1881 reads: “The great day. Mr Christian, the architect from the Ecclesiasical Commissioners, came down to inspect the church and pronounced it in order. The annual Boat Race came off this morning and Oxford won... The Liberals have gained more seats... All went off very well. The church was quite filled and the Bishop of Chichester did the function of consecrating our church very well and effectively.... We then had a luncheon of 50 or 60 clergy and their wives and some neighbours. Afterwards my brother and I took a walk round the furnace ponds. May God bless

our church now dedicated to the high and holy use of teaching His truth.” Dr. John Rogers closed the East Grinstead Cottage Hospital in 1874, which he had opened 11 years earlier with his own money, due to the lack of financial support, as he saw it, from the local people. Thirteen years later, a serious accident to Lord Neville’s groom demonstrated the need for a hospital in the town. If the Sisters of St Margaret had not taken him in, there would have been nowhere for him to be treated. This incident caused Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Smith, with others, to look for suitable properties in which

the hospital could be re-opened. They found a new building on the London Road, Lansdowne House in 1888. The Smiths rented the property, and originally ran the hospital themselves for a few months. They then established a committee on which Mrs Smith served. She took a keen, personal interest in the running of it. She established a group of ladies who visited the hospital frequently and together they ensured that the highest standards were upheld. Mrs Oswald Smith was also especially concerned with the finances. The new Cottage Hospital contained only six beds for patients and one for the matron. The rapidly increasing population of East Grinstead and the surrounding villages which it covered soon meant that the hospital could not always cope with the needs of its patients. The committee started to explore the area for a new site. One was found in Imberhorne lane but before anything could be done about it, the Elephants Head Coffee House in Queens Road had, unexpectedly become vacant. Owned by the Smiths (whose symbol was the Elephant’s Head was) it was being used as a holiday home for the London Ragged School who no longer wanted it. With their usual generosity, it was offered to the committee to house the

cottage hospital. This gift was gladly accepted and the necessary alterations were carried out. Very shortly after it opened, in January 1901, Queen Victoria died on the Isle of Wight. It was unanimously agreed at a public meeting to rename the hospital the Queen Victoria Cottage Hospital. It was felt that this would be a fitting memorial to the late, long-serving, monarch. The need for a library in the town was mooted in 1887 and again Oswald Smith was one of the first to donate. He not only gave a 999 year lease on the land on which it was to be built but also a cheque for £100. The building was also to house the Literary and Scientific Institute which needed better premises. Mrs Oswald Smith laid the foundation stone the following year. When Rose Smith died in1892, Oswald rebuilt the Chapel of Ease at Holtye as a memorial to her. He was to live for another ten years and is buried in the churchyard there. It can be said of Oswald and Rose Smith, as of Christopher Wren, if you seek their memorial, “ look around you.”

Gardening Tips for MAY Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Fruit

Remove surplus raspberry shoots, leaving only the strongest and give plants a good mulch. Spray tree and soft fruit against pest and diseases. Be careful not to spray on open blooms, as pollinating insects may be present.

Vegetables MMain crop potatoes not yet planted must be put in as soon as possible. Early potatoes may be “earthed up”. Continue to make sowings of Lettuce, Radish, Beet, Carrots. Runner and French Beans may be sown, along with Spinach, Swede and later in the month, Sweetcorn. Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage and Celery plants may be planted out when they have been “hardened off”.

GIFT VOUCHER

More ventilation and more frequent watering will be needed on hot sunny days. Tomatoes making new growth need to be securely supported, any side shoots appearing need to be removed as soon as they appear except bush varieties.

Lawns

If weeds are present then use a combined weed and feed. Seeding bare patches can also be carried out.Plum and cherry trees can be pruned now the threat of getting silver leaf disease has gone.

Roses Fertilise and spray roses for pest and disease.
