The scene is a run-down diner in the middle of the desert. The cook behind the counter looks as rough as the decrepit building. The waitress has seen better days. Travelers stop ----------------only out of necessity. The creaking floors, the blowing dust outside, and the broken down television all add to a sense of anxiety. Something is going to happen. Your heart is beating faster. You want to cover your eyes, but somehow can’t.

Appearing from nowhere, an old lady walks in. She looks like your typical soft-hearted, sweater-wearing, pie-making grandma. But something isn’t right. She doesn’t fit the time and place. She takes a seat, looks up at the waitress and says in a sweet grandmotherly voice, “It’s going to burn. Your baby is going to burn.” Suddenly, she leaps to the next table, bites a chunk out of a guy’s neck, and crawls up the wall onto the ceiling! The scene is from the movie Legion.46 Everyone in the theater screamed. I covered my eyes and curled up in fetal position asking my wife it was over. Seriously, I’m the biggest wimp when it comes to scary movies.

It’s easy to ignore the idea of spiritual battle with demons, angels and Satan, right?

We love that scary movies just freak us out! Just look at any movie theatre marquee. Chances are, at least one of the screens is showing a movie about evil, Satan, demons or angels. Right now, the movie Legion is a semi-big deal, but by the time you read this, some other movie will have cast the devil as antagonist. People love to dance with the dark side through Ouija boards, books, movies, video games and TV shows. The fight between good and evil, between demons and angels or between man and Satan just seems to sell. So, do you believe in this stuff?

Wars have ensued since the beginning of time. People ----------------fight for a host of reasons. Land and livestock, political and religious disagreements, pride, ego, and overall ----------------distain for another culture have all sparked massacres. And yes, even a soccer game started a war between El Salvador and Honduras. Over the years people have become more and more vocal against war. Signs, banners, stickers, and buttons tout “Make Peace not War,” and other anti-war slogans. 99.9999999999% of all people (not scientifically proven, but probably very accurate) truly desire peace. We don’t want our loved ones to die, our homes demolished or our country destroyed. We don’t want to have to rebuild some other country obliterated by war. But, you know, there is that small percentage, that .000000001% who are all about the fight.

The War

For you and me, Satan is that .0000000001%. He’s got this longtime war going on with God. And you and I are the spoils. He’s waging a spiritual war against you. Jesus knew firsthand about spiritual warfare in our world. Luke tells the story of a dad who begged Jesus to rid his only son of a demon. This whole scene upset Jesus. He felt the dad’s fear and anxiety. He knew the demon was messing up this family and the boy. He knew this war was real. Imagine this dad feeling hopeless and helpless. The boy is confused and vulnerable as the demon overtakes his body and mind. It’s high drama everyday for them! Then Jesus saves the day just like the Bible says he will. God ultimately wins the war against evil. Jesus rebukes the evil spirit, heals the boy and gives to him back to his dad.47 Can you imagine that father and son hugging each other, gratefully thanking Jesus, and walking home to start a new life, free at last from the evil spirit? How great is that?

The devil is the enemy of Christ, and of every Christ Follower. The war is on! You may never be ‘possessed’ by a demon, but the evil one tries to influence you just same. Do you get that? It’s real! It’s war and it’s going on right now. ----------------Look at it this way. Satan wants to hold you back and prevent you from living for God. So, he’ll ----------------lie to you about stuff. He’ll try to make you weak in your relationship with God. He’ll tempt you into doing stuff that he knows will mess you up. It’s a war and he’s a jerk! He’s the enemy!

The Apostle Paul mentions two offensive weapons as a part of your armor. The power of living a prayer-filled life is one weapon for your arsenal. The other is God’s Word. To fight this war, you need to put both into action. Interestingly there is one piece missing in this list of equipment - the back plate. God intends you to be on the offensive – facing it. Not in a defensive stance or turning your back and running. Spend a few minutes right now, thinking through how you are doing in these two areas:

Living shady never turns out well. Shady is the stuff you keep hidden. You keep secrets about things you don’t want your parents or others to know. You’re up to something sketchy and you know it, so you just try to keep the lies organized and hope no one notices, including God. It’s easy to think you’ll never get caught. As long as you keep it hidden, it’ll be all right. Do you know why living shady never works? You can’t hide stuff from God! He sees what’s up with you. He knows your heart! You might manage to keep it from certain people for a while, but eventually you’ll get found out.

YOU’VE HEARD OF A SHADE TREE, LIGHT SHADES, SHADES OF COLORS AND OF COURSE SLIM SHADY. BUT WHAT IS LIVING SHADY?

Making wise decisions is totally different. Living wisely gives you confidence. Of course you’re not perfect (Who is?!) but a clear conscience goes a long way. When you honor God, he honors you. Living wisely means admitting it when you mess up. It’s living without the fear of getting ‘found out’ because you have no ugly secrets. You value your relationships enough not to lie and deceive people. Your friends really know you. No secrets. No shadows. Nothin’ shady. Two ways Satan messes with you is through lies and accusation. He totally wants you to ignore God’s wisdom and guidance. So he misleads you by whispering lies about the shadiness of sin. He’ll say, “it’s not that bad” or “go ahead, nobody will catch you.” Then, he later turns it around on you with, “Do you think God can love you after what you did?” In fact, scripture refers to Satan as “the father of lies”49 and as “the accuser.”50 The best thing you can do is to keep your mental and spiritual arsenal full of scripture and be ready for battle when he inevitably shows up.

So, if Satan is a liar, do you think he’d lie to you to mess you up? For sure he would, and he does.

Paul tells us, “…do not give the devil a foothold.51” A foothold is a place where the devil can find “sure footing” and come after you. In this verse, Paul is talking about a whole list of behaviors that the evil one will use in a person’s life to mess them up. Here’s how it works: 1. SATAN FINDS A SPOT IN YOUR LIFE WHERE HE CAN GET A FOOTHOLD, IT COULD BE LAZINESS, ANGER, GOSSIP, JEALOUSY, INSECURITY, PRIDE, YOU NAME IT. 2. ONCE HE FINDS THAT FOOTHOLD, HE MESSES WITH YOU.

3. HE LIES JUST ENOUGH TO TEMPT YOU. HE KNOWS WHERE YOU’RE WEAK AND VULNERABLE.

4. ONCE YOU’RE TEMPTED, HE CONTINUES HIS LIES UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY GO AHEAD WITH THE SIN.

Go to God with this. Think about that question long and hard. Consider your most vulnerable areas and then pray through them with God. Be honest. Tell him about the potential footholds in your life. Be specific and be real. Confess to him. Accept his grace and ask him to guide you toward living with wisdom in these areas! That’s the big prayer – Get on the “wise path”!

I’ve heard it said that we must never either underestimate or overestimate the devil. Never underestimate his treachery and ability to deceive. He will do anything to create distance between you and God. Given a foothold, he will try to destroy you spiritually, emotionally, physically and relationally. But don’t get discouraged! Know that we must never overestimate Satan either. We know the end of the story and God wins! Jesus has already defeated the devil and all evil on the cross and at the resurrection. Be encouraged and know that he understands your weaknesses and loves you in spite of them. He is with you every step of the way. As a Christian, remain in him and the victory is yours!

What’s it like when you’re totally looking forward to something? You think about it all the time! You can’t sleep! You play it over and over in your mind and wonder what it will be like and when it’s going to happen. It’s fun, right? Anticipating is almost as fun as the event itself! As you fall more in love with God, there’s a lot to look forward to. It’s a cool thing when your heart gets bigger about stuff you never cared about before. God gives you love for people that were unlovable to you. He gives you patience in areas you used to freak out about. He gives you strength where you used to be weak. Growing in Christ is a journey. Some people call it an “adventure” because as Jesus changes your heart and life it often surprises and amazes you. Life-change is a cool thing.

The biggest thing to look forward to is Christ’s return to earth. Jesus made a promise two thousand years ago and Christians have been living in the hope of his return ever since.

One of the most interesting topics to students is the “end times.” When is the world going to end? How will it all happen? Really smart people throughout the ages have studied and debated this topic. From reading Decode, you know there are many things we know to be true and some

stuff that’s in the “wait and see” category. One thing we know for sure is that no one knows exactly when Jesus is coming back. It’s not like a Super Bowl Party that we plan in advance - even though that would be cool! If you think the Super Bowl commercials are cool – ----------------imagine how nuts it will be watching Jesus do his thing in the sky right above your house! We won’t need CNN for this one! In the Old Testament, many prophets -----------------like Daniel, Ezekiel and others, gave accounts of their visions from God about the end times. You may be most familiar with the Apostle John’s account in the New Testament, the book of Revelation. All of it has very cool imagery – really graphic and crazy amazing! Lots of students get into reading these and you can too.

Another thing that’s cool about studying the end times is that it helps us prepare for Christ’s return and the afterlife. Living our lives to worship him is a huge way to prepare. Think about it: You can get ready for an eternity of loving and following Christ, by loving and following him right now. We don’t have to wait! Spend the next few minutes thinking about what you’re looking forward to when Jesus comes back. Get excited about it – it’s going to happen! Here’s the thing: Treat it like anything else you’re looking forward to – you plan, you get ready, you think about who’s going to be there and what you’ll see and do. ----------------Have you ever had a bad dream? I don’t mean a “kind-of-not-so-good” bad dream – I mean a “Fo’shizzle, Fo’realize” BAD DREAM. Have you had one of those?

When I was 18 I had a really vivid bad dream. It was about hell. I only had the dream once, but remember it clearly. I woke up knowing that this dream was a big deal! In other words, this dream wasn’t the result of bad pizza or a scary movie. This was a dream I really learned from. THE DREAM I was walking through a really dark place. There were sounds – like creepy, people in pain kinds of sounds. I didn’t actually see anyone making the groaning sounds, but I sensed that they were near. As I got closer to the sounds, they got louder and scarier. It was freaky. It wasn’t like the people were communicating to me or to

each other; they were just hurting! I don’t know

a long time, you know? At one point, I felt like

how long the dream lasted, but it seemed like

them. It was sad, like I was leaving people that were hopelessly in pain. That dream marked me. It seemed a lot like the way hell is described in the Bible. Hell is a place separate from God’s perpetual darkness. It is a place of “weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

The dream impacted me dramatically. At that point, I was just starting to take God seriously. I had a real friendship with Jesus Christ and was following his leadership in my life. Just like you. You’re not reading this book by accident! God’s got you and you’ve got him! That’s how ----------------I felt. One of the things about being a Christ Follower who is serious about honoring him is that you begin to really care about people, the poor----------------and lonely, friends who are hurting, family members that don’t know God yet. You care – I know you do. I do too. So back to the dream - or nightmare! Hell is a reality. The Bible doesn’t mess around when it talks about hell. Jesus calls it the “outer darkness”53– a place totally separate from the love of God. MATTHEW 8:12

Now, my dream isn’t a YouTube video of hell – that kind of thing is nonexistent. But the Bible does describe the reality of hell. Torment. Isolation. Deep darkness. Punishment. Fire. Regret filled. With a reality like that, nobody should go there except Satan and his demons. God fo’shizz doesn’t want you there, and he doesn’t want the people in your life there either. Maybe God wants to use you; your life, your actions and your words to help someone avoid hell. Maybe God wants YOU to impact your friends, family and anyone within your influence to know him and not end up in hell. Not so crazy a thought, right?

It won’t be like that! In fact, when you check out what the Bible has to say about heaven, it’s pretty shocking! It’s bigger than our brains can get around. It’ll truly be an “other” kind of experience! The biggest problem we have with heaven is that our finite minds can’t even imagine it. One thing is certain: If you’re a Christ Follower, you’re going!

FYI, THE KID WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A DRUMMER IN A METAL BAND AND HE WAS WEARING A METALLICA T-SHIRT…NO JOKE! THINKING BACK ON IT, FORCING THAT GUY TO PLAY THE HARP WOULD HAVE BEEN A PRETTY FUNNY THING!

I was helping to lead a funeral service earlier this year and a phrase kept coming up throughout the whole ceremony. It was a line that brought peace in the grieving, and served as advice at this difficult time. The guy who died was a close friend, and a best friend. He had four awesome kids and a loving wife. He left this earth way too soon via suicide. In the midst of this loss and grief, this particular line rang true. When many of us wanted to run from the pain of death, it kept us hopeful. I talked about it in the context of the Bible, heaven, and what it will be like to spend eternity with God in His Kingdom. Ready for it? Here’s the line:

Christ will be in heaven. We’ll see him. Lean into it. Heaven brings awesome hope! Lean into it. Heaven is worth any and all effort here on earth. Lean into it. We are all jacked up sinners who only get to heaven because of amazing grace. Lean into it. It’s going to last 10,000 years and that’s just the start! Lean into it. No more tears or death or crying or pain, they do not exist in heaven. Lean into “WHEN WE’VE BEEN THERE TEN THOUSAND it. Heaven is the final destiny of the righteous. YEARS, BRIGHT SHINING AS THE SUN, WE’VE NO LESS DAYS TO SING GOD’S PRAISE, THAN WHEN Lean into it. We will see loved ones who are WE’VE FIRST BEGUN.” Christ Followers again in heaven! It will be AMAZING GRACE, JOHN NEWTON the greatest reunion in the history of mankind. Lean into it. Don’t be afraid for your future, Christ has it handled. Lean into it.
